Để giúp loài người “thượng đẳng” khẳng định điều này, tác giả Ben Ambridge đã đưa ra một loạt thử nghiệm mà thực chất là cuộc so tài giữa loài người và các loài động vật, từ chó nhà tới dơi, chim bồ câu, quạ, tinh tinh… Những tình huống nghe có vẻ oái oăm và những câu hỏi dường như ngớ ngẩn kiểu: loài người có tinh mắt như ong, nhớ đường giỏi như cá và thông minh hơn con tinh tinh không?

Kết quả của những thử nghiệm lạ lùng này sẽ khiến độc giả sửng sốt, và có lẽ sau giây phút bẽ bàng, hơi ngấm mùi hổ thẹn thì chúng ta sẽ thú nhận, ừm… có lẽ trong chừng mực nào đó, loài người chúng ta “thua” một số loài động vật khác.

Mà, cũng chẳng cần phải so sánh với các loài động vật, những hiện tượng tâm lý được đưa ra trong sách cũng rất đáng được chúng ta tìm hiểu để tránh rơi vào những “cái bẫy” tâm lý mà chính các nhà khoa học vẫn chưa thể lý giải.

This book is a book that gives you information only if you follow all the instructions it gives you. This book experiments with an interactive format that allows you to understand nature while learning more about yourself. This book is a must-read for all avid science fans. After reading the book, I found out I am not as smart as a chimpanzee. Maybe you'll read this book and find out for yourself.

A book that teaches you a lot about the many wonders of nature, and that reminds how we humans may not be so different from all other animals. It’s actually astonishing to read about the many experiments that have been done and to see how we compare with other animals. In fact, we share many fallacies with among others greater ape species, but not with other animals (for example sunken cost fallacy) as well as sensitivity to illusion (Ebbinghaus illusion). Also the very diverse strategies animals have developed throughout evolution are very interesting to learn about. Take for example the swarm intelligence that ants use to find the most optimal route to a food source and back to the nest. Illustrated in the book through the tower of Hanoi experiment. The book is interactive in giving you experiments to carry out yourself and let you compare with the animal kingdom.

Enjoyed this a lot! I love the structure of the book: the quiz and answer format is making the book fun to read as you get to compare yourself to other animals. The content is a good mix of evolution, genetics and behavioural biology and is organized nicely. I found the book lets you compare yourself to a good mix of animals as well, but the title is a bit misleading as I would expect much more about Chimpanzees than the author actually gave me (and Chimpanzees are really smart so it could have been fun). The only thing I can say is I would like a bit of pschology mixed in; for example if you give different answer than most people what does it say about you, or if you think more like other animals and less like majority of people what does it mean? Either way I enjoyed the book!

Lots of quirky research-based facts; some of which I've read and seen quoted in other popular science books (like Malcolm Gladwell, Matthew Syed or similar - don't remember exactly). Towards the end it felt a little long - perhaps too many quirky facts lumped together, that didn't really seem all that related (how long it takes various animals to pee, for example).

His language is "fun", although sometimes it might feel a bit too much fun for the point of the text -lots and lots of jokes and 'excuse the pun'.

Worth a read (partly) and a scan (partly).

There's a whole lot of entertainment - but also surprising facts - to be discovered in Ben Ambridge's book Are You Smarter than a Chimpanzee?

Ambridge sets out to compare many human mental abilities with those of animals (and even insects), showing how often we share capabilities, and in some (rather limited) circumstances can even be beaten by animals, hence the title of the book. Ranging from the way that, for example, some animals aren't taken in by the optical illusions that fool us, to feats of memory and logic, page after page Ambridge presents us with fascinating examples from the natural world.

Sometimes what's most amazing is the lengths to which researchers (who can't ask the animals what they are thinking) have to go to devise their experiments to see, for example, how ants would deal with the Tower of Hanoi problem, or whether or not chickens are less likely than us to be fooled by optical illusions where one object (in a 2D image) is apparently in front of another. You will both be entertained by the capabilities of the star performers of the natural world and given the chance to try out many of the tests yourself (though some of the more tedious ones, involving coming back to the book after several months or filling in a questionnaire over several pages, will probably get a glance, rather than be done for real).

This book was a whisker away from five stars, and only two things held it back. One was the author's over-the-top enthusiasm for puns. Practically every page has one or more. After 20 pages I was groaning - by the end, I was whimpering. The other issue I have is that Ambridge is somewhat heavy handed in attempting to counter 'human exceptionalism' - the idea that humans are somehow special. While he makes perfectly reasonable points that we are animals, and one or more other species often has similar 'special' abilities, even Ambridge makes the point that we often have them to a far greater extent - and no other species even comes close in the range of these specialities. He also ignores our ability to consciously shape and change our environment by our creativity - rather than be shaped by it, identified by Bronowski as one of the more unique human characteristics. I think it's silly to try to pretend humans aren't exceptional just to avoid the long outdated idea that we are the pinnacle of 'creation'.

Despite this, I had huge fun with this book, and Ambridge certainly doesn't always bang on in anti-exceptional mode. I was interested in the animal examples, but even more so in the human shortcomings. All in all, this psychological comparison of humans with other species is a delight that should get many, many readers interested.

Cuốn sách này có cách tương tác với người đọc rất thú vị, mỗi một thí nghiệm/trắc nghiệm/fun fact được đưa ra, tác giả đều kéo người đọc vô thí nghiệm cùng. Muôn vạn câu đố từ hình đến chữ, đọc rất thú vị. Mình đánh giá cao cách dẫn dắt hài hước, chơi chữ điên cuồng và dẫn nguồn rất tuyệt vời của tác giả.

Có nhiều sự thật mà đọc xong mình cười rũ như con điên: như lũ bồ câu mê tín (mê tín thật ấy chứ không bóng gió gì đâu), rồi cả bọn vượn mẹ toàn ăn ruột chuối và quẳng vỏ cho con ăn, rồi bọn ong nổ banh dương vật để niêm phong tinh trùng, côn trùng có 2 dương vật để nổ 1 cái còn 1 cái, và bảng xếp hạng độ đau do mấy vết cắn của tùm lum sinh vật trên tùm lum vị trí trên cơ thể người (đau nhất ở đâu thì ai cũng đoán ra rồi đó)…

Tuy nhiều thí nghiệm không mới, nhưng cách cứ so sánh liên tục giữa người và động vật cũng hay, chúng ta nghĩ chúng ta là nhất là vì mấy con thú khác không biết nói thôi, chứ biết nói thì nó cũng phát biểu rằng loài của nó là nhất rồi ấy chứ, có ai thua gì ai. Con ngựa mà biết nghĩ suy, thì thần hay thánh cũng hình ngựa thôi.

Книга в не очень благородном жанре «Галопом по европам» — но помимо этого серьёзных претензий к ней мало. Это дикое количество знаний, бережно упакованных в удобную для весёлого потребления форму. Другое дело, что для одних читателей эти знания не в новинку (пчёлы узнают друг друга по мордочкам, а белки отлично запоминают места нычек — ну да, очень неожиданно), а другие посмеются, удивятся да и забудут. Эмбридж — очень обаятельный автор и отличный популяризатор, хочется, чтобы он перестал размениваться на такие книжки-малышки и взялся за большой и классный научпоп.

Впрочем, книжки-малышки тоже кто-то должен писать, и уж лучше обаятельный ливерпульский профессор, чем не пойми кто.

A very interaktive book - keep a pen, paper, maybe even a calculator at hand. It's a collection of fun-facts about animals, anecdotes and studies driving home the point that, as Darwin phrased it, the difference beween human animals and non-human animals is 'one of degree and not of kind'. If you aren't a creationist, I don't really see how that would be surprising at all - humans are animals... the book is still fun, very light to read, full of puns and jokes. It's probably best enjoyed if you read it with friends, and use the chapters and quizzes as conversation starters.

Kimi zaman birilerine sinirlendiğimiz zaman, hayvan benzetmesi yaparız. Bence bu kitabı okuduktan sonra kişi bir daha bu tarz benzetmeler yapmaktan kaçınacaktır. Çünkü eğer birisi o kişiyi, hayvan isimlerini zikretme usulü ile hakaret etme noktasına getirdiyse muhtemelen birçok hayvan, hayvan ismi yakıştırılan kişiden daha akıllı olacaktır.

Belki de olayda hayvan ismi yakıştırılan kişi masumdur ve aksine hayvan ismini yakıştıran kişiden çok daha zekidir hayvanlar.

Elimdeki kitap sizin aklınızda bir devrim etkisi yaratacak türden bir kitap değil. Ancak okurken eğlenebileceğiniz ve iki haber programı arasında olan eğlence amaçlı bir bilim programı izliyormuşsunuz hissi yaratan kitap olarak düşünebilirsiniz kendisi. Belki de Pazar sabahları yayınlanan programlara da benzetebiliriz.

Sizleri bilmem ama akıllı hayvanlı televizyon programı deyince benim aklıma Zabu Mafu (Zoboo Mafoo) geliyor. Neyse, konumuza geçelim.

Bundan önce Psy-Q kitabını bizlerle buluşturmuş olan Ben Ambridges bu sefer hayvanları bizlere anlatıyor. Hayvanların çeşitli zeka testlerinde ne tür başarılar sergilediklerini anlatıp onlarla yarışmamız için bizi teşvik ediyor. Çünkü bizimle konuşmak istediği bir şey var ve o da, insanların gerçekten özel olup olmadığı. İnsan, özel olarak yaratılmış, diğer hiçbir canlıya benzemeyen kabiliyetlere sahip kainatın en üstün varlığı mı? Ben Ambridges’in cevabına göre bize özel yeteneklerimiz olsa da düşündüğümüz kadar özel değiliz.

İnteraktif ve bunun sayesinde eğlenceli olmayı kolaylıkla başaran bir kitap. Kitabın içerisinde çeşitli bulmacalar ve etkinlikler ile siz de kendinizi sınayabiliyorsunuz. Her bir başlıkta, bir sınama varsa önce siz kendinizi sınıyorsunuz, ardından hayvanların başarısını öğrenip işin bilgilenme kısmına geçiyorsunuz. Bilgilenme kısmında ise hayvanların bu teste nasıl tabi tutulduğu, ne kadar başarılı bir sonuç aldıkları ve bunu ne için yaptıklarını anlatıyor.

Aşağı yukarı birçok hayvanın bahsi geçiyor. Fareler, filler, yarasalar ve hatta böcekler dahi. İnsana atfettiğimiz o birçok durumun hayvanlar içerisinde yaşanabileceğine tanıklık ediyorsunuz. Kitapta anlatılanlar size laf salatası veya tatava gelebilir, inanmak istemeyebilirsiniz. Bunun için de yazar size sağlam bir kaynakça bölümü bırakmış. Eğer merak ederseniz kitabın arkasındaki kaynakçadan, yapılan deneylerin derinini inceleyebilirsiniz.

Kapağından ötürü sanki bulmaca kitabı izlenimi bıraksa da bence bu kitabın öncelikli amacı meramını anlatmak. Sadece, bunu yapmak için daha etkileşimli bir yol seçmiş yazar ki, okuyucunun aklında daha iyi kalsın.

Hayvanların acı çekip çekmediğin, hayvanlarla neden konuşamadığımızı ve hayvan deneylerine neden ihtiyaç duyduğumuzu da anlatıyor yazar. Hayvanlarla deneye karşı olan kitleye de hayvan deneyleri sayesinde keşfedilen şeyleri gösteriyor. Ben de süper destekçisi değilim ama elimizde şimdilik daha iyi bir çözüm yok, diye düşünmekteyim.

Malum bir kitapçının 12.90 Türk Lirası kampanyası sayesinde edindim bu kitabı. Eğer siz de bu civarlarda bu kitabı görürseniz bence bir şans verin. Hem eğlenceli hem öğretici. Bir kitap gibi baştan sona okumanıza da gerek yok. Bir köşeden bir aşağıdan; bir baştan bir sondan okunabilir. Ben beğendim ve indirimli fiyatının denk geleceği diğer kitaplara kıyasla daha öğretici olacağını düşünüyorum.
