EXCERPT: On the day she turned sixteen - when she was still Lydia Hess, the Bryant still seven years into her future - Liddy thought she knew how it was all going to shake out. She and her two besties - Emma Harper and Maggie Lloyd - would finish college and return to their hometown, Wyndham Beach, on the lower coast of Massachusetts, to live their happily-ever-afters with the to-be-determined loves of their lives and raise their families. Maggie, of course, would marry Brett, her high school love, but wouldn't move home until his professional football career was over (no one in the entire states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island doubted Brett Crawford would be drafted by a pro team, but they all, naturally, prayed he'd go to the Patriots). The three of them - Liddy, Emma and Maggie - would always be best friends, and their children would play (and be BFFs), too. They'd live out their best lives together, grow old together, and support each other in whatever life might throw their way.

At fifty-nine, Liddy was in turn amused and chagrined by her younger self's naivety when she considered her bold predictions hadn't even been half right once it was all added up.

MY THOUGHTS: What lovely characters! I started reading and it felt like I'd come across old friends I hadn't seen for some time and we were catching up on one another's lives.

I loved Liddy. She has been in a deep, dark place following her daughter's unexplained suicide but her decision to buy and renovate the town's old book store has given her life some purpose. She will never get over the loss of her daughter, but she is learning to live with it. Liddy is kind and generous, her empathy unlimited. And she has the support of her friends Emma and Maggie, and Maggie's daughter Grace.

This is a story of the strength of friendship and second chances. I love that the characters are more mature, as their life experiences enrich the storyline. I also really enjoy these series in which the setting is the common factor, and each book focuses on a different character, so that each may be read as a stand-alone.

Having said that, I loved this and Mariah Stewart's writing style so much that I have just purchased the first book in this series, An Invincible Summer, and I am excited to see that she has a long backlist of books for me to enjoy.

the setup…
Four years ago, Lydia (Liddy) Bryant’s beloved daughter Jessica took her own life at the age of twenty-nine. One year later, her husband Jim packed up and left without explanation, leaving Liddy to grapple with her grief alone and find a new life path. She’s turned her focus towards buying the local bookshop from the retiring owner. It’s in sad shape but Liddy’s vision for it energizes her, best friends Maggie Flynn & Emma Dean, as well as the rest of the Wyndham Beach community. Emmett (Tuck) Shelby is her contractor and he’s committed to more than just the renovation project.

the heart of the story…
Liddy is haunted by her daughter’s suicide, especially since she not only didn’t see it coming but still doesn’t know why she made that choice. Preparing for the opening of the bookshop brings her joy and resolution, however, and Tuck’s apparent interest in her is reciprocated. I loved how this mature relationship developed, absent a lot of drama and miscommunication. The story is multilayered as Grace Flynn, Maggie’s daughter, is also finding her way since moving to Wyndham Beach. She’s helping Liddy in substantive ways and opening herself to a new relationship with Tuck’s son Linc who’s spearheading renovations to a new space for Grace.

the narration…
I really liked this narrator as she sounded like I thought Liddy would, full of spark and sass as that’s her personality. She also has strong storytelling skills and wonderful tone.

the bottom line…
I expected to like this series but am unprepared for how much I’m loving the characters, their lives and circumstances and the town itself. There’s a strong sense of community but the downside of small towns exists right along with the merits. Everyone knows your business but sometimes that’s a good thing. I liked both Liddy and Grace’s new relationships and they were markedly different, a realistic contrast given their age disparities and experience. There are important revelations that deeply impact Liddy, including the reemergence of her husband. But throughout, the close bond between the three friends (Liddy, Maggie & Emma) make this story more than memorable. And, I highly recommend you read the entire series in order. 4.5 stars

Liddy Bryant was devastated when her daughter Jessica unexpectedly committed suicide, and a year later her husband of forty years leaves her. Without the support of her best friends Maggie and Emma, Liddy doubts she would have found the strength to keep going and now she’s ready to start a new chapter in her life. Liddy’s decided to buy the rundown bookstore in her hometown of Wyndham Beach, and it needs a lot of work. Liddy completely transforms the shop from top to bottom, with help from her friends Maggie, Emma, Grace and builder Tuck Shelby.

Liddy’s rather nervous the day Wyndham Beach Reads opens, she has so many things she wants to try and other plans for her bookshop. She’s still unsure if she has done the right thing financially, Liddy’s worried the novelty of a new business will wear off and her shop will fail. Tuck has been very supportive, he’s a really nice man and Liddy wonders if they could ever be more than just friends. When Jim returns, Liddy's not overjoyed to see her ex-husband, he does say he’s sorry about hurting her and wants Liddy to forgive him and start over?

A long kept secret is finally revealed, Liddy feels Jessica can finally rest in peace, she loves running her own business, she’s accomplished more than she ever thought she could, she helps a young man in need, and decides who she wants to spend her future with.

I received a copy of Goodbye Again from NetGalley and Montlake in exchange for an honest review, and I have also read the first book in the Wyndham Beach Series, An Invincible Summer and I absolutely adored both books. Mariah Stewart writes with real tenderness and is sensitive to people’s feelings regarding difficult subjects and she’s an extremely talented author. Liddy’s story will make you feel really emotional, I can’t wait for the next book in the wonderful series and five stars from me.

The Wyndham Beach series continues with the stories of three friends who grew up together and are still close in their late 50's. We had Maggie's story in An Invincible Summer and now we have Liddy's story. She has had a few years of sorrow and confusion over the suicide of her daughter, Jessie. She has harbored feelings of anger and resentment toward her husband Jim, who left on the one-year anniversary of Jessie's death. Now Liddy is living for herself with new beginnings. She bought the local bookstore and along with Grace, Maggie's daughter, she is doing great business. This story is a one of life's ups, downs, disappointments, and happy moments. Liddy is able to get some closure over the past and make new plans and beginnings for the future. Grace's story is also intertwined as she moves on from her painful divorce. In addition to helping Liddy, she is starting up a website business and looking to a new home, maybe even a love interest. This is another great addition to the series. I am hoping to see Emma's story coming up soon.

Tender and satisfying.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the last book, An Invincible Summer, Stewart really got to me with her storytelling about going home, cultivating friendships, and lost loves. This book targets the intense feelings of the loss of a child and a marriage. How one can move forward towards finding yourself again.
Stewart dives into the rebirth of a midlife woman as she pours herself into buying a business while finding hope and thinking about love again. We are also treated to several other characters in this saga that love and support her. It is a wonderful feeling to be able to reach out to a support system without judgement and Stewart combines that effortlessly in this book.
Her characters are strong and well developed with a backbone and care for all in their quaint town. She manages to develop and create a place and space that we could picture ourselves living in today.
With loads of emotion and tender feelings all around, this story will cause a few, okay, many tears to fall. But have no fear. She rescues us in the end with smiles for all!
Author Mariah Stewart has penned a wonderful women’s fiction novel with GOODBYE AGAIN. The main character, Liddy Bryant, is in her early 60’s, divorced, and grieving the loss of her only child, Jessica, to suicide four years ago. Presently, Liddy is given a new outlook in her life when she purchases an old bookstore and remodels the interior and exterior then opens the doors with great success. Her best friends from childhood help and support her—Emma and Maggie—as well as Grace, Maggie’s daughter. Liddy is re-acquainted with handsome contractor, Tuck Shelby, and feels a spark inside that she hasn’t felt in years.
Liddy’s emotions over opening the bookstore transfer well through the author’s pen. I was amped up along with Liddy and all her friends. I enjoyed how the author added suspense (Dylan), history, conflict (Jim, the ex), and romance (Tuck), and blended it all so well. I initially felt the first few chapters were slow, but the pace soon picked up and soared from then on. It’s heartbreaking once the truth about Jessica’s suicide comes out, yet I enjoyed all the ways Liddy and her friends kept her memory and talents alive through Liddy’s bookstore. I was also pleased with all the happy endings and positive outlooks to satisfy readers. Bravo!
I honestly reviewed an unedited digital arc provided by NetGalley and Montlake. All opinions are my own. Thank you.
This second book in the Wyndham Beach series brings us Liddy's story. You don't have to read the first book to enjoy this one, but the story of these three friends; Lydia, Maggie and Emma, starts in An Invincible Summer and continues with this book. Liddy is still dealing with the suicide of her daughter and her husband leaving her within the same year, but trying to start a new life. She buys the local bookstore that was closed, renovates it and opens to wonderful fanfair. Mariah Stewart creates wonderful family and friends, so is not just content to tell Liddy's story. Maggie's family are also an integral part of the story. Maggie's daughters are both dealing with changes in their own lives, with Grace moving to Wyndham Beach to figure out what she wants in life. Natalie's life has revolved around her daughter Daisy, but when Emma's son, Chris comes back into her life, she suddenly finds herself involved with someone for the first time since Daisy's father walked out. There is more as well. Romance, family drama, secrets revealed and decisions to make all bring us on another wonderful visit to Wyndham Beach.
I can't say enough about this cast of characters. They all have issues, situations and tough decisions to make that are extremely realistic and relatable. Almost all of them are wonderful, likable characters. The story flows so well, and all the various situations and storylines mesh into a great story. There are some serious themes in this story including teen pregnancy, adoption, grooming, sexual assault (not described but a court case is ongoing), suicide, infidelity, addiction and more. Having said that, this is not a depressing story. The characters lift each other up, support and care for one another, are extremely generous and empathetic and love one another. I think I enjoyed this book more than the first one. Once again, I loved the set up for Emma's story and look forward to meeting up with these characters in the next Wyndham Beach book. I did a read/listen with this book narrated by Amanda Collins. I find it interesting that as the POV changed from the first book, so did the narrator. I enjoyed Amanda Collins' narration with her voices, expression, tone, accents and pacing. I definitely recommend this story in whatever format you enjoy.
Sometimes when it’s been months said I’ve read a book that’s a part of a series I have a hard time slipping back into things but I had zero issues here. It’s the second book in a series featuring a group of female friends who are older, which I love, it’s not something I see very often and it’s appreciated. There are so many great characters in this one, you have Liddy and her friends and then their kids as well as residents of Wyndham Beach making up a cast that’s sure to please everyone. Liddy’s story is a sad and heavy one, her daughter took her life a few years back and she’s struggled to come to terms with it. Shortly after her daughters death her husband abandons her so she has really been through it. Despite the heavy subject matter this definitely has lightness and humor. It’s an authentic portrayal of someone’s messy life and there is a lot to relate to here. There’s a couple of romances, lots of friendship and some drama too. Overall a really enjoyable read especially if you like character driven stories in an idyllic setting.
Liddy Bryant is struggling to move forward after her daughters suicide and her husbands abandonment.
She purchases the town bookstore and plans to remodel and get her life back on track. She hires her friend Tuck Shelby to do the remodeling. They begin to have feelings for each other but Liddy’s husband wants them to get back together. Who will she choose? Also share the lives of Liddy’s friends. Loved the book!
Goodbye Again is a heartwarming and uplifting novel about friendship, love, and starting over. I was struck by the sincerity of the characters and their relationships; whether it was friendship, the love between partners, the love of a parent for a child, or child for a parent, none of them were easy and carefree, but they were always genuine. The characters were all dealing with some sort of pain or loss, but they were also open to new possibilities, new opportunities, and second chances at happiness.
In Goodbye Again Mariah Stewart explores the aftermath of a young woman's suicide, the impact on her parents and the questions why?
As well she shows a deep connection between friends, small town life and building anew after dreams fall apart for some of the characters.
It's a warmhearted approach and I like how it includes characters from the previous book, in an ongoing way. It explores the rebuilding of a bookshop and plans for an abandoned small house. The part I liked the most was about the uninvited lodger to the bookshop and the owner's response.
It's a good beach read, although to me it was somewhat bland, however I am sure those who enjoy a Mariah Stewart book will welcome it.
Ok listen, did I buy both this book and its predecessor because I wanted to finish the last 10-15 pages of this book? Yes, I absolutely did and I have zero regrets. I stumbled across this series on Kindle Unlimited and instantly fell in love, there’s drama and secrets but the way it’s written is not stressful. This is my favorite type of book, one where you feel like you’re being let in on an overview of a group of friends lives. Wyndham beach is a precious little town and it makes me want to move back to small towns.
In this second book of the series things are heating up between Natalie and Chris. Maggie moves to Wyndham beach with Grace in tow, and both find new leases on their life. Liddy embraces her own life changes.
It is beautiful and sad at some points and completely uplifting. 10/10 would recommend.
Trigger warning for discussion of previous loss of a child and SA.
Goodbye Again is a continuation of the Wyndham Beach series by Mariah Stewart, and features absolutely beautiful covers. I also absolutely love the content in this series. These books are so readable; relatable, and easy to become engrossed in the characters’ lives as well as the narrative.
Goodbye Again features a group of female friends and the struggles that they have faced, and continue to deal with, in life. No one’s life is easy. Everyone faces challenges, heartbreak and regret, but there’s also beauty, joy, purpose and new opportunities to fulfill your dreams and make a difference in the lives of others. Life is a blend of happiness and sorrow, and if you’ve got friends beside you, or family behind you, you make it meaningful and memorable.
This book symbolizes all that so well, and that’s why it’s so touching, inspiring and an absolute favorite of mine.
Let’s all move to Wyndham Beach!
Just reading about Wyndham Beach makes you want to be there hanging out with all the awesome characters.
The first book in the series covers three young women, best friends forever they thought. Things happen and now it is 25 years later…..what has life brought them? So much has happened and changed for all three women.
A story of opening ones heart to overcome tragedies and heartache…..can they move forward?
Overall, a beautiful story of friendship and taking chances.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
A wonderfully well written story about three best friends trying to navigate life in their later years, Goodbye Again (the second book in the Wyndham Beach series) centers mainly on Liddy with side trips again into Grace's journey. There are a few triggering issues but they are dealt with such amazing sensitivity. I definitely had tears in my eyes and want to visit the location so much (well I know it is technically fictional but I need a trip to the general area again soon), the author makes it feel so inviting. I look forward to more in this world.
Thanks to Goodreads for this giveaway win! I knew this would be a “good read” since I thoroughly enjoyed the first book of this series. The same characters are featured in this installment, this time focusing on another of the three women who’ve been lifelong friends. Taking place in a beach town, Goodbye Again is women’s fiction just the way I enjoy it. Friends and family coming together in good times and bad. I’m looking forward to the next installment, hoping this series is more than a trilogy.
I love Mariah Stewart’s books. The relationships between friends are usually at the forefront of her books. This book is no exception. I love that this series is older women still having stories and romances no matter the age. This story really brought home that it’s never too late to try things. I love Liddy’s character and the way she has grown and changed through the past two books of the series.
The Wyndham series has become my bookish comfort equivalent of a programme like Virgin River. Set on the Massachusetts coast I can spend plenty of time sitting on the beach, out on a boat or stepping into town and having a coffee and a catch up and indulging in a bit of shopping - the nice shopping that you do in independent stores..And I’ve got rather fond of the three main characters - Liddy, Maggie and Emma. I love that these ladies are all in their fifties and navigating life and relationships as older women, as Mothers, partners and working women…
Talking of shops you are going to love the fact that a lot of Goodbye Again takes place in a book store! The second In the series this time we focus on Libby who has bought a book store. Liddy’s beloved daughter took her own life and Liddy’s husband left her a year later..so she’s throwing all of herself into revitalising the town’s bookstore. Her project has ups and downs from structural problems to the former owner wandering around in a state of dementia. Liddy has so many plans for her store and I loved reading about her book clubs, story times author promotion ideas..Sometimes I did worry that she had far too many projects on the go and I wasn’t sure she had ordered enough bestsellers.
The story deals with many issues with a lightness of touch - suicide, adoption, abuse..and although it is a lighter read it doesn’t wrap things up neatly. But this is a book filled with mainly nice people, with friendship and family..with a glass of wine at sunset and a blooming wonderful bookstore and I really enjoy my time at Wyndham Beach..
So far the series has focused on Maggie and then Liddy and I’m really hoping that there will be another one to focus on Emma…I would love to return!
Sorrow, friendships, and life changes
I didn't read the first book in this Wyndham Beach, Massachusetts series and I'm sure I would have enjoyed it but there was enough backstory that I didn't feel too lost.
Liddy is 59 years old and lost her beloved daughter to suicide four years ago with no explanation of why her daughter felt she had to do this. And then her husband of forty years walked out a year later with no explanation.
Luckily she has her two best friends that have helped her through this terrible time in her life and now she's starting to rebuild herself. She just bought a rundown bookstore, is renovating it with the help of her friends and a hunky local contractor and is starting to feel hope and happiness for the first time in a long time.
I loved Liddy's story and all the side stories included in this excellent romance/women's fiction novel. I also always tend to love stories about successful bookstores. I highly recommend this book.
I received this book from Montclair Publishing through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.
Mariah Stewart’s writing is very smooth and effortless. I slipped right back into,the women from Wyndham Beach. Lydia is launching her book store and perhaps,dipping her toes back into the dating world. I love Tuck, a carpenter is so attractive and appealing. I just like how genuinely nice everyone is, even the less than appealing characters. Lydia shows how big her heart is by helping out a young man in need. I figured out the reason behind her daughter’s death fairly early on. I loved all,the book talk and bookstore vibes. Love this series!
Liddy is still reeling from her daughter’s unexplained suicide when her decides to leave their marriage. She throws herself full force into a failing bookstore in her beloved Wyndham Beach.
Second chances, tight friendships spanning generations in a pretty beach town are forefront. I loved reading about this group of friends from high school, now mature women with adult children who bring in a new set of worries. So refreshing to have a set of mature women, friends thru thick and thin, with little drama! Relatable women with relatable issues. I didn’t read the first book, but will go back at some point because it’s a story I’d like to visit. I look forward to Book 3!
Thanks to Ms. Stewart, Montlake Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone.
The story is set in Wyndham Beach and is the story of Liddy Bryant and her friends over the course of a few months. Liddy has just purchased a bookstore as the novel opens and is wondering if she made a mistake. More changes are coming to her life and the lives of her friends and their children. The book was an easy read.
