When you hear the word “alchemy,” it most likely conjures the image of a medieval scholar trying in vain to transform lead into gold. But, according to this author, alchemy has so much more to it. This book author explores both the historical underpinnings of alchemy as well as how it can be applied as a contemporary philosophy, craft, and art. She looks not only at its European history but also its ancient Eastern beginnings. She talks about the correlation between the metals and the planets—an astrological connection—well as herbs. One aspect I found interesting is that alchemical symbols are often the same as contemporary astrology glyphs, even if the meaning is different. It certainly suggests a parallel, if not converging, history between alchemy and astrology. She explains and shows how alchemy is interested not only in earthly substances, including their transformation and transmutation, but how they (and we) correlate to the cosmos and our place within it. I found this to be a fascinating deep dive into the historical roots of alchemy and how it could be seen as a complicated philosophical view and viable metaphysical practice today.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
First-rate all the way. This was an interesting overview where it is not the end all the readers will gain some basic information. The book had a great deal of information and the references listed show that the author did their homework. I have read some of the information before but I did find some splendid surprises too. I thought it was an excellent book. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
