Rebecca Turner traveled to Bath on the faint hope of finding a cure for her ailing mother—but with very little money to pay for it.
Dr. Jared Cooper was unsure he could ever love again until he laid eyes on Rebecca’s cousin—the incomparable Miss Alicia. He’s smitten, but she’s in mourning and thus unavailable for a time. Fortunately, her cousin Rebecca can help.
Finding themselves each in need of something that the other person can procure, Rebecca and Jared strike a bargain: he agrees to tend to her ailing mother at no charge on the condition that Rebecca discreetly passes his letters to her mourning cousin. She can ill afford to lose Dr. Cooper’s help, so when Alicia refuses to write back to the doctor, Rebecca takes matters into her own hands.
But what can Rebecca do when she finds herself falling in love with the man behind the letters, and he doesn’t know it’s her?
Sons of Somerset: A Clean Regency Romance Series Can five working class men find love on the job?
This is the fourth book in the clean and sweet Regency romance Sons of Somerset series. Although this working class romance is a stand-alone novel, the books are best enjoyed when read in order.
Book 1: Carving for Miss Coventry by Deborah M. Hathaway Book 2: The Stable Master's Son by Mindy Burbidge Strunk Book 3: In Pursuit of the Painter by Ashtyn Newbold Book 4: An Agreeable Alliance by Kasey Stockton Book 5: The Highwayman's Letter by Martha Keyes
" Понякога беше странно как смъртта може да промени човек в очите на онези, които е оставил след себе си. Може да изтрие отрицателните части от тях, оставяйки само положителните. "
Такива малки книжки, които сякаш са предназначени да ни разсеят в края на деня , понякога така се вплитат в собствената ни емоционална несигурност, че са в състояние да ни отворят очите за много въпроси. И героите ни стават близки ; стават ни довереници. Доста често вярвам на всичките им истини.
So Cute! This is like Cyrano and Roxanna the French love story:} But there was no large nose and it was different enough that it felt like a new story. I enjoyed it and felt very satisfied at the end. No religion and very sweet and clean.
This book has been on my list since it released. Life was crazy when it did and I kept meaning to come back to read it and enjoy it but I was a little slow. I'm so glad I finally picked it up. It was wonderful! The mistaken identity trope was so fun! Rebecca and Jared meet and have a few circumstances that bring them together again and again. Unfortunately for Rebecca, Jared thinks that he's communicating with her cousin. Once in the situation Rebecca isn't quite sure how to get out of it.
I loved watching these two together. So many great scenes! *Happy sigh* And once the truth comes out, oh my heart! You're going to love it, especially if you are a fan of Kasey Stockton's books and writing.
This is part of a series with the other books written by other authors. Each of them work as a standalone.
Content: Clean.
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
At this point, I do believe you shall simply always receive letter reviews from me, because every time I read another of your books, I am left so incredibly happy that any other Reggie would simply be blasphemy. As such, I believe you deserve to be elevated in status. Thus, you shall henceforth be known Lady Stockton.
Now, allow me to attempt to wax eloquent on how much I adored this delightful book.
I loved how determined and devoted Rachel was. She genuinely cared about her family and that love shone through everything she did—including one not-particularly-wise decision (I’m certain you know of what I speak). But I loved her personality and how she grew, particularly as she began to learn to be more accepting of kindness and help from others. Jared was really a great guy. He had such a kind nature and was a genuinely good person—even if it takes the proverbial slap in the face for him to recognize what (or who) he actually needs in his life. But I sincerely love a kindhearted hero and Jared fits that bill so well.
The two sets of parents in this book were also wonderful. It was just so sweet to read a story where neither protagonist had terrible parents to deal with. I loved this book and have so enjoyed reading more about the working class. Please keep writing delightfully delicious books, my dear Lady Stockton. I love to affectionately refer to them as happiness making, because each one I read truly fills me with happiness. An Agreeable Alliance is no exception. Thank you so much for gifting the world with your books!
Every yours, Jessica
**Many thanks to the author for the advance copy, which I was offered with option to review. These are my very own thoughts.
Every time I read a Kasey Stockton book, I think the next one can’t get better, but then it does! Happy sigh. I am really loving this working-class series and am thrilled to give it my recommendation. I love the mistaken identity plot this one had going. Jared and Rebecca are perfection together and you’ll get lost in this story from the very first chapter. This book is full of lovable characters and amazing writing! Highly, highly recommend reading this one!
Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
I liked the story in the beginning, and the writing had a decent tone and pace. However, it was frustrating and quite a bit off putting how Rebecca pretty much created her own personal problems, then complained about them.
This review mostly covers my frustration with the book, which had potential, but ended up disappointing me. I did enjoy the general style (and informative author note) enough to lean toward 3* instead of 2* and to consider reading something else by the author.
Spoilers
Rebecca's pride and fixation on debt/money also wasn't endearing or consistently portrayed (ex. willing or not to sell the heirloom, walking away from offered help instead of just insisting on an alternate payment), which contributed to my annoyance with her.
Part of this book's plot involved Rebecca writing letters to Jared in place of her cousin. I had expected this setup to start with less self-interest on Rebecca's part. In this story, there was no reason to write the fake letter - he hadn't insisted on the payment, and she knew him well enough at that point to know that he wouldn't abandon her mother. In another set up, the false authoring could have made more sense or been the source of more antics/fun. Instead, the letter falsehood just created self inflicted angst. The letters and their topics were barely included, mostly mentioned in passing.
Jared was generally an upstanding and honest character. He did nothing to warrant the letter falsehood. He went above and beyond expectations to help Rebecca and her mother. Although, he did seem to have blinders on when it came to women, including his first love (loved another), Alicia (flirt), and Rebecca (stubborn, prideful, deceitful). Also, he thought Rebecca was kind and selfless above others for sitting with her family after a relative by marriage collapsed. Really? Gah.
Anyway, Jared was understandably upset by the letter reveal. I actually liked that he didn't instantaneously forgive the deception and declare his love. It felt much more authentic to have him need time to process everything. But apparently he didn't forgive Rebecca on her desired and suddenly rushed timeline, so she snapped at him (oh, and she was also mad at the jeweller for selling the heirloom she couldn't afford to buy back anyway). He then apologized. Ugh. That whole scene soured their relationship for me, and as it was near the end the relationship didn't really recover.
"You do not need love to be happy...but it will enhance your life."
Amen! That is so true.
I am left with sweet stirrings of respectful love as the last pages are read in this delightful story. The romance was created realistically with engaging activities, entertaining dialog, and heartfelt glances.
It is wonderful that there are authors who use their talents and skills to produce true romance novels. Thank you for being one of those special people, Kasey Stockton.
Is there anything sweeter than a clean, Regency-era romance novel? Personally, I think books like An Agreeable Alliance are just what the doctor ordered for a cozy evening in! The story centers on Rebecca Turner and Jared Cooper. When they meet, Rebecca is interested in Mr. Cooper purely because he is a doctor and her mother is in desperate need of medical attention, for which they cannot pay in the traditional way. Mr. Cooper is only interested in Rebecca for her connection to her beautiful cousin, with whom he is enamored. Soon, the two settle upon an “agreeable alliance”, in which Mr. Cooper provides medical treatment to Rebecca’s mother, in return for Rebecca’s aid in passing letters between her cousin and Mr. Cooper. Unfortunately, Rebecca’s cousin doesn’t like corresponding! But Rebecca is determined to help her mama receive treatment, so she writes Mr. Cooper on her cousin’s behalf. What could go wrong with that arrangement? Pick up a copy of An Agreeable Alliance to find out! Kasey Stockton has done it again! She created a cast of loveable characters, with just the right amount of growth throughout the story. Rebecca starts off as a selfless, meek girl who lives in her cousin’s shadow, but by the end of the story she gains the confidence she needs to speak her mind (though, thankfully, she keeps her selflessness!). Jared is absolutely dashing and positively full of humility. His backstory was one I couldn’t wait to uncover, and when I learned of it, my heart went out to him. He is a gem of a human, and while I was frustrated with his behavior for a couple of chapters (don’t worry, his behavior makes sense in the story!), I ultimately couldn’t help cheering for him and loving him from the start. Seeing him learn to forgive himself and others in the story was so heart-warming. The side characters are also lovely, though I would’ve liked more expansion on what makes Henry so disagreeable to Rebecca in the beginning. It becomes apparent as the story progresses, but Rebecca has no way of truly knowing his character when first they meet, so I would’ve liked for Rebecca to have had more substance on which to base her opinion. Overall, I give this story 4.5 out of 5 stars, which I’ll round up. The reason for docking half a point was because I felt that the story was a bit repetitive in some instances, almost as if it was written out of order and the author forgot she had already made a particular point clear elsewhere in the story. While I did greatly enjoy this story, it didn’t capture me quite the way Journey to Bongary Spring did. That being said, I really loved that Kasey included a brief mention of God in this book, the lack of which was literally my only complaint about Journey to Bongary Spring. Despite these small criticisms, An Agreeable Alliance is still a wonderful read and whenever the Regency romance bug hits again, I’ll know just which doctor to visit!
I received the book for free from the author and/or publisher. All comments and opinions are entirely my own and I am writing a voluntary review.
An absolutely adorable regency romance! I have immensely enjoyed the unique Sons of Somerset series, regency stories which feature heroes that are working men. In this book, Jared Cooper is a surgeon who becomes smitten with a girl he meets at a cricket match. As he seeks to court her through letters, however, he ends up spending time with her cousin Rebecca and wondering if he is courting the wrong woman.
Loved Rebecca's personality and that she wore spectacles! Jared was thoughtful and kind, and I appreciated that their challenge to overcome didn't have anything to do with their social stations. Such a sweet romance and that kiss in the rain? Sigh worthy, for sure!
I have long been a fan of Kasey Stockton and this book is a perfect example why. Memorable characters, captivating plot, and swoony romance. What more could you ask for?
I received a complimentary copy of this book but a positive review was not required.
I loved Jared and Rebecca's story. Their friendship was so natural. I loved how Jared noticed the small things and cared about them. He was such a sweet character, even if a little confused where his heart lay. I felt for Rebecca and all the pressure she was under. I'm grateful that even though she had a lot on her shoulders she also had a lot of people in her corner.
Oh how I enjoyed this book. It had a good dose of angst with the letters and overall romance with how they continually met and we could see their affection grow slowly. My only qualm is that seeing the letters too would have been nice!
I am completely smitten with this story. I could identify with Rebecca; beautiful in her own right but unable to recognize her own beauty. She is someone who hides behind her beautiful cousin, Alicia, who is vivacious and social. Rebecca wears "spectacles" that add to her ability to hide behind.
Jared Cooper is a surgeon; one has been trained by his father to be a doctor. He is in Bath staying with his parents when he meets the beautiful Alicia. Because she is still in mourning from the death of her father, he is unable to pursue her but Rebecca is their go-between. Rebecca requests the services of the good doctor to help her mother who is ailing. They can each provide something the other one needs.
As Jared and Rebecca spend more time together, they begin to see what could exist for the two of them, but unsure of the other's feelings, they stay quiet; at least for a while. When Jared feels betrayed by Rebecca, it appears that all might be lost. Can forgiveness be given when forever is possible?
This was a sweet, clean, Regency romance with plenty of heart and a happy ending. There was even kissing in the rain. Makes my heart melt. (c;
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.
💌An Agreeable Alliance by @authorkaseystockton 💌Sons of Somerset, Book 4 💌Narrated by Laura Greaves and I adored her skill.
You can never go wrong with a Kasey Stockton story and when you jump into her Historical’s it’s such a delight. I’m transported to a time that brings comfort and tender feelings. Loved this story.
Rebecca Tuner, always honest, but trying circumstances find her in a small web of deceit that she has a hard time amending. Luckily her true character still shines forth.
Doctor Jared Cooper has regrets and works hard to never find himself in the same situations again. Determined to help Rebecca’s ailing mother when she doesn’t have enough for payment he offers another way. But spending extra time with Rebecca may surprise him.

I loved how Jared had to realize he had to forgive himself before he could forgive others and move forward.
[4.5 stars] I really really enjoyed it until maybe 3/4 of the way through. While most of the book was excellent, the ending was cheesier than I’ve come to expect from Stockton. There was an unnecessary amount of relationship tension, and a struggle with forgiveness that was borderline unrealistic.
I liked the storyline/concept, as well as the characters. The relationship and character development was excellent, and I found myself quite invested in them. Honestly, despite the ending, I still probably would have given this book 5 stars if it were a different author. I’ve just come to have great expectations for Kasey Stockton’s writing, so found this a little disappointing.
Content: There is no foul language, sex, or violence. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. There is no real mention of faith or God.
Rebecca is wallflowerish next to her beautiful cousin, but she barely belongs on that shelf (not really plain, just wears glasses). I quite enjoyed this despite its squeaky cleanness and Christian undertones. The premise is a delightfully angsty setup and has a pleasing if low-drama execution. I liked the characters and their development was believable. (3.5 stars)
Living in the shadow of her beautiful, effervescent cousin, Alicia, was the kind of life that Miss Rebecca Turner came to expect. She didn’t begrudge Alicia until one day when she meets the handsome and kind Dr. Jared Cooper. He is completely taken by Alicia and asks Rebecca to be the courier of his messages in exchange for seeing her sick mother as his patient. Rebecca finds herself in a quandary as Alicia turns up her fickle nose and refuses to write Jared. If she doesn’t respond, Rebecca’s mother will not get the care she needs from Dr. Cooper. And so begins the correspondence between “Alicia” (who is really Rebecca) and Jared.
I love the wallflower who gets a happy ending and Ms. Stockton wrote a story that does this so well. Jared begins to realize he may have been wrong about the “angel” he thought Alicia was and the real gem, Rebecca, is hiding behind her continuously smudged glasses. Including this as part of the story showed the loving and caring nature of Jared as he cleans Rebecca’s glasses for her quite often. Rebecca was sweet and selfless as she put the needs of her mother before hers. She takes care of her mother and concedes to Alicia’s whims. Rebecca would be the kind of young lady that you would want for a relative or friend.
I highly recommend this clean and heartwarming story in the Sons of Somerset series. While you can read it as a standalone, the opening scene of the cricket match is all the richer since it shows a different perspective than that of the other three books.
Pleased as punch that I scored an ARC of An Agreeable Alliance, the fourth book in the Sons of Somerset series. I love that Rebecca, our heroine, has glasses! In regency romance, it often feels like wearing glasses dooms women to spinsterhood, but Rebecca proves us wrong. The story was also a refreshing take on the genre, really swinging me between "will they, or won't they?"
As Stockton does with all of her books, she includes interesting historical details. The story takes place in Bath in 1816, which was "The Year Without Summer." The weather, which plays a big part in the book, reflects the meteorological phenomena of the time.
My favorite character of the book was honestly Alicia, in spite of her scheming and meddling. She felt very real and reminded me of a few people I know...
Excited to see whatelse Ms. Stockton has in store!
The twist of this Regency Series "Sons of Somerset" gives us insight into the common man of that day not the usual Lords of the Ton. This book takes us into the life of the surgeon who would have been trained by hands on experience into this field. He would not be called Dr because that would have been someone trained in a university.
Mr Jared Cooper had been trained by his father who was now retired to Bath. Jared had just settled in Bath and was still getting to know the area before deciding if he would set up a practice there. He had already had his heart crushed two years previous by a woman who had chosen another. When he met Alicia Langley, her beauty captured him as he could not get her out of his mind. When he received a note from her delivered by her cousin Miss Rebecca Turner, he believed she was also interested in him. As the days passed he got to know Rebecca personally and her cousin Alicia, who was in mourning through her letters.
Rebecca Turner always seemed to pale in comparison to her beautiful flirty cousin Alicia. She was used to this and didn't let it bother her because she was grateful to her cousin and aunt for the opportunities to attend activities in Bath. Her purpose wasn't to find romance but to find a doctor to help her mother who had been ailing for months. While waiting to hear from her father who was in France, she had very tight finances and so needed to make a trade with the doctor for his services. When Mr Cooper agrees to see her mother, her pride forces her to come up with a way to compensate him. Exchanging letters for him with her cousin seemed like a good idea until her cousin refused to write any more letters. So with Alicia's approval, Rebecca writes the letters to him. As the letters continue to be exchanged they share their likes and discuss many things. Rebecca finds herself struggling to not have feelings towards him knowing that he is interested in her cousin.
There were so many parts to this story that really touched me- the fact that Rebecca needed to wear glasses and that they always seemed to be smudged. Jared was always giving her his clean handkerchief to clean her glasses. Also the weather throughout this story was so unseasonably cool with constant rainy days where Rebecca always seemed to need Jared's help keeping her dry with his umbrella.
Would Rebecca ever be able to reveal that she was the true author of the letters? Would Jared realize that his feelings weren't really for Alicia but for her kind caring cousin Rebecca?
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.
Rebecca Turner and her mother are in Bath, hoping to find a doctor who can heal her mother, who is slowly losing all her energy and health. While finding a doctor isn't that hard, finding one they can afford is. Rebecca's pride means she won't accept charity, so she tries to come up with a trade.
Jared Cooper enjoys his work as a surgeon, and is happy to help the Turners. Getting around Rebecca's pride is a bit sticky, but after she brings him a secret note from her beautiful cousin, he suggests she continue to act as courier passing notes back and forth as payment for his medical services.
Things get muddled as cousin Alicia refuses to write more notes, telling Rebecca she can just pen them herself. With her mother's medical care on the line, she does. As the days and weeks pass, both Rebecca and Jared get to know one another. What will happen when secrets are revealed? Will the deception be too much too forgive?
I loved this addition to the Sons of Somerset series! I felt for Rebecca, who wanted help for her mother and was desperate to get it. I loved watching the friendship develop between characters. The story was also fascinating because of the extra details - the weather in the 'year without a summer', the diagnosis of Mrs. Turner with an illness I am personally familiar with, and the bit of mystery surrounding Rebecca's father, who has been away on business far longer than expected. A sweet, clean read.
* I received a free copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own.
Things we can learn from An Agreeable Alliance by @authorkaseystockton
1. If a gentleman offers to clean your spectacles, allow him to do so
2. If the opportunity to talk about India presents itself, do it
Synopsis:
I loved this book!! I loved Rebecca’s personality and I laughed at all the moments involving her spectacles. I loved her character development and how much she cared for everyone around her. I definitely relate to her and loved watching her grow as a person and begin to be more accepting of kindness and help from others.
I really enjoyed Jared's character as well. He was always so kind and thoughtful. I loved that their challenges to overcome didn't have anything to do with their social stations. Such a beautiful romance, and there is a kiss in the rain! *swoon*
This was my first book I've read by Kasey and only book (so far) in the Sons of Somerset series. I enjoyed it!
Memorable characters and a captivating swoony romance? It doesn't get much better than that. I'm looking forward to reading more books by this amazing author!
The only thing I wish it had were the letters written between the two characters.
This is another fantastic story to add to the Sons of Somerset Series. And another great one from Mrs. Stockton. I absolutely loved Dr. Jared Cooper and Rebecca Turner. The sensible Rebecca is used to being overlooked by her lovely, outgoing cousin Alicia. When seeking medical aide for her ailing mother, she gains it from another of Alicia's admirers. But there is something different about this doctor and though the arrangement is strictly professional, she can't help feeling more.
Dr. Cooper is struggling to find direction in his career after a devastating loss. He is determined to never again refuse any request for medical help. So when approached by the cousin of the charming woman who had captured his notice, he feels providence has smiled upon him. With an agreeable arrangement with Miss Turner he may just get the woman of his dreams. But as he further interacts with Miss Turner and receives Alicia's letters, he wonders which woman is actually in his heart.
I really enjoyed the growth of both Rebecca and Jared over this story. How Rebecca comes to see her beauty. And how Jared comes to know his heart. They are so perfect for each other and I loved them getting to their HEA. I highly recommend this story to those who love clean Regency romance and a secret exchange of letters.
Happy Reading ☺️!
I did receive a ARC copy for a review but all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
Rebecca Turner enlists the services of Mr. Jared Cooper, whom she happened to meet at a cricket match near Bath. He is smitten with her cousin, Alicia Langley. Rebecca's mother is ill and in need of a doctor, which Rebecca hopes she has found in Mr. Cooper. Unable to pay for his services, she offers a trade, which comes in the form of delivering letters to Alicia. Only Alicia refuses to write back, so Rebecca secretly takes over the correspondence.
Rebecca and her mother are in difficult financial straits. Her father is in the business of selling French wine, and is currently in France on business. He has not sent them any money or letters in weeks.
The first three books in this series dealt with working class men who courted women in a higher social class. This one seems to be an exception. Mr. Cooper is a surgeon, which places him in the Lower Middle Class. Rebecca's father is a merchant, which would put him in the Upper Middle Class if he were wealthy, but it doesn't appear that he is. Her family owns property in Somerset, but a property owner needed to own at least 300 acres to be considered gentry. So it appears that the two of them are more or less equal in class.
An enjoyable read with only a few grammatical errors. Clean, with minor religious references. This was my favorite of the four I've read in the series.
Finding a doctor to treat her mother for the meager sum she can afford to pay, has proven difficult for Rebecca. When a young doctor takes interest in her dearest friend and cousin, he promises to help her if she agrees to courier letters between them. Although Rebecca feels uncomfortable taking part in the scandalous scheme, when her cousin refuses to write back, she takes matters into her own hands and starts writing in her stead.
An Agreeable Alliance by Kasey Stockton was such a heartwarming, rainy-day read.
The time Jared and Rebecca spend together leads to a beautiful friendship despite Rebecca's guilt at her misleading actions.
Tbh, I may be a tad bias...I happen to have a soft spot for the trope of two characters falling for each other through letters, *especially* when they don't realize that they have been writing to the wrong person/someone they know, all along. (Srsly, hit me up, I have list😉)
I loved their conversations and how frank they were able to be with each other. I loved how thoughtful and observant Jared was (the glasses😇😉), and Rebecca's determination to care for the people she loved, even when she sometimes made questionable decisions to succeed in that goal.
Oh, and the rain scene? Don't even get me started😉
“It would not do to fall in love with a man who wanted to marry her cousin.” We really can’t control our hearts though sometimes…
The thing I love about the Sons of Somerset books, is that the storyline is different from your normal regency plot. And while I love the normal regency plot, this book really kept my interest as I tried to figure out how the happily ever after would work out and why certain characters were acting odd. Once I started, I was eagerly looking for time I could spend finishing this one.
This book had so many tender rain scenes. Man, Kasey can write some good romantic tension between two characters that aren’t sure what they are to each other.
Jared Cooper had my heart in this one. All the little things he did, and the way he treated those around him, especially Rebecca, was so sweet.
Rebecca was strong, determined, kind, and quite used to being overlooked.
I loved these two characters together.
“I will never be satisfied to hear that you do not like the way you look, Rebecca. Particularly when I think your spectacles are very charming.”
