En 2015, la guerre en Syrie entre dans sa quatrième année. Face à la montée des périls en Orient, de jeunes volontaires ont répondu à l'appel : porter secours là où les chrétiens sont en danger. Alexandre Goodarzy est l'un d'entre eux. En 2014, ce jeune professeur d'histoire-géographie rejoint l'association SOS Chrétiens d'Orient.D'une révolution contre la dictature, la guerre en Syrie s'est transformée très vite en guerre religieuse où les chrétiens sont en première ligne, pris en tenaille entre un régime qui se durcit et des groupes islamistes de plus en plus sanguinaires. De Damas à Alep, des villes chrétiennes de Mhardeh aux portes de Palmyre, du krak des Chevaliers au Kurdistan, Alexandre Goodarzy va découvrir une autre Syrie. Une Syrie qui refuse la mainmise de Daech et d'Al-Nosra, qui se bat contre les Frères musulmans et leurs bailleurs de fonds, la Turquie, le Qatar et l'Arabie saoudite.Avec son équipe, Alexandre Goodarzy va multiplier les projets de développement sur place avant d'élargir leur mission à d'autres pays : Éthiopie, Pakistan, Irak, Arménie, Jordanie... partout où les chrétiens sont en danger.Jusqu'à ce jour de janvier 2020, où Alexandre Goodarzy et trois de ses collègues sont enlevés à Bagdad...Alexandre Goodarzy parcourt depuis une vingtaine d'années les pays du Proche-Orient et de l'Asie centrale. Il a vécu de 2015 à 2020 en Syrie. Il est aujourd'hui directeur adjoint des Opérations - responsable Développement chez SOS Chrétiens d'Orient.

As tragic of an example as it is, Syria is an excellent case study for putting a spotlight on the immeasurable complexity and multifaceted nature of middle eastern conflicts. The author, through an on the ground approach has helped me appreciate this ball of yarn of a crisis.

- Dozens of actors with alliances that are forming and breaking over this and that interest. (Turkey, Kurds, Christians, Arabs, Americans, French, the Assad regime, Shiite Muslims, Sunni Muslims, Djihadistes both for Al-Nostra and ISIL, Alaouites, Russia, Iran, Religious Muslims, Political Muslims, Israel and Hezbollah to name a few lol).

- The oppressed in one country is the oppressor in its neighbouring country.

- A social, religious, political and ethnic web of communities who must live together in a fragile balance while states are in constant war against countries and ideologies from within and without.

- People with worldviews that are as opposite as the east from the west that live right next to each other.

- Narratives are constantly being twisted to serve needs.

- The irony of the west supporting terrorists abroad who then come and perform djihad at home.

And receiving the brunt of all of it are the normal everyday Syrian who is fatalistically dragged into this resounding opera of war and must courageously live, pray and work in the middle of it all.
