Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess is a heartwarming story about family, role models, dreams, and discovering a determination for growth. The first in a six-part series, this diverse picture book shines the spotlight on a little brown girl who loves musical theater and never lets anything get in the way of her dreams. Everyone else has an idea of who she should be, but in the end, she discovers that she is the one who gets to decide.
The story also reveals the special family dynamic that Kayla shares with her mom; a hard-working woman who struggles with the guilt of not being as available for her young daughter as she would like. But as the story progresses, Kayla and her mom realize the impact of valuing the time they have together as well as the importance of seeing each other acknowledge (and pursue) their individual dreams. {ages 5 and up}

This is the first book in the series about Kayla. It is a beautiful introduction to a sweet little girl who has big dreams. In this story, the special relationship between Kayla and her mom is portrayed in a touching way. Their love for each other is felt through their interactions and conversations on each page. I really enjoyed the colorful illustrations that made the characters pop on each page. As a teacher, I can't wait to add this book to my classroom library. It is different than the typical "princess" book and I know my students will connect with this diverse and inspirational story.
I received this book for my honest review as a part of Multicultural Children's Book Day 2022.
This cute book is great for a mom/daughter bedtime read. I wrote a more detailed review of this lovely book for Multicultural Book Day 2021, and you can read that here: https://wp.me/p7OIsL-17V
What a beautiful children’s picture book “Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess” was.
The main reason I loved the story was because of its positive message. I loved how the author conveys messages of positivity and makes Kayla feel hopeful. Even though Kayla would encounter mean people who would try to bring her down in the world, she would never forget how much her family loved her. The author also promotes hard word when the mother tells Kayla that working hard and doing your best pays off in the end. I think this is a beautiful message to impart to young ones at an early age. Even though Kayla’s present is cliched, it is beautiful to see how it makes Kayla happy and confident.
Similarly, the illustrations by Charlene Mosley are gorgeous. Each page is vibrant and colorful, which would appeal to younger readers. I also loved the magical animals that make an appearance in the story. The illustrator includes creatures like the fox and bear, who don’t play a part in the story. Nevertheless, they bring the pages to life with their whimsical expressions. It was so cute seeing them interact in Kayla’s world.
Overall, “Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess” is a beautiful start to the picture book series, and I recommended it to parents who would like to gift their child a feel-good story with positive messages.
I wasn’t aware of Kayla Pecchioni before reading this book but am delighted to learn about her and her determination to be successful. The story shows the importance of family in developing confidence and providing opportunities for young people to be who they want to be.
Like many, Kayla’s mother felt guilty about not having more time to spend with her daughter. However, the book shows that love and encouragement and being a good role model is equally important as time.
As author Deedee Cummings says, “Daughters learn their place in the world by watching their mothers claim theirs.”
Many young children will be able to identify with Kayla’s situation and be encouraged to feel the same sense of worth, determination and possibility as Kayla does. I especially like the focus on growth and determination to achieve your goals and dreams.
Kayla is the child of a hardworking mother who, for the most part, only sees her daughter before she leaves for work every morning. At that time she asks what Kayla’s plan is for the day, since she says a plan gives hope and dreams. And since Kayla is usually in bed by the time her mom gets home in the evening, once a day visiting is all they usually have time for. However, Mom tries to make it quality time.
But one evening Kayla is told that she can stay up and wait for her mother to get home, since her mom has good news to share. Of course, good news to a child is sure to be gift-related. So Kayla spends some time imagining what it might be.
In this case, I’m going to share more of the story so that My Concerns will be better understood.
When Mom gets home she refers to Kayla this way,
"Her mom gave her a big hug and said, “How is my sweet little princess in her tower?”
Kayla then asks if she has a present for her. Her mother reminds her that she had big news, she didn’t say a gift. The news?
“I got a promotion.”
Now most kids might feign happiness because of good training, but let’s face it, that’s more of an adult-thing. However, after her announcement Mom admits she does have a gift for Kayla, a sparkly tiara for her little princess. And with the tiara Mom assures her that she should always be treated like royalty and ignore unkind remarks, etc.
And here’s my last quote:
“ . . . In Kayla’s eyes, her mom saw all of the hopes and dreams she ever had. A journey that, in this moment, made all the hard work worth it. In her mom’s eyes, Kayla saw her hopes and dreams for her future. A role model to follow.”
This series, Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess is based loosely on the life of Broadway actress Kayla Pecchioni.
My Concerns As I mentioned, I ended up relating more of this story than I normally do in hopes that my concerns might be better understood.
Please bear in mind that this review and these concerns only apply to the first book in this series. I will be reviewing books 2-3 in the next few days. My concerns were:
1) I didn’t think this felt much like a picture book because of some of the wording. 2) Was the point that a promotion was worth more than quality time with her child? I know mom was supposed to be a role model, but it felt like she abandoned her family for her personal goals. 3) The princess-in-a-castle part didn’t feel like it added much to the plot.
What I Really Liked 1) The illustrations were bright and very kid-friendly 2) The idea of having more picture books that represent role-model characters is a plus. 3) A picture book that supports that each of us are special is wonderful Reaching for the stars regarding goals is a wonderful thought. At least one to be discussed.
My Final Thoughts Though this particular book doesn’t completely work for me, the idea does. And I feel confident that I know where the author was headed with her thoughts, I just didn’t feel it came out right for me.
Bottom line: If this sounds good to you, without a doubt give the series a try. I’m very excited to read the next book. Watch for my review tomorrow.
I was given a copy of this book and allowed to share my review with no prior stipulations
Lively and colorful illustrations bring imagination to life, allowing childhood fantasy to dance on the border of reality on every page.
Kayla is a little girl, who is greatly loved by her family, and loves her family back. Every day, her mother goes to work, and Kayla often doesn't see her again until late in the evening. But one day, her mother comes home early with a big surprise.
I'm just going to start with the illustrations because I do enjoy the illustrations in this book. They do a terrific job at depicting Kayla and the loving environment she lives in, while adding color and visual fantasy, which fits perfectly with a child's imagination. Kayla is a girl full of joy and energy, and this book captures that while inviting the reader to allow their own fantasies to fly.
The tale itself isn't really complicated and rather straight forward. And that's just right. The author makes it very clear that Kayla is loved and enjoys her life, and that is not hampered by her mother's job, which does have her away many hours of each day. Instead, the caring and wholesome atmosphere beams with positive feelings. The surprise Kayla's mother brings home adds to this even more, allowing this book to bask in the joy that family love can bring. So, this one is a cuddle-up-with-and-feel-good read.
The text makes a nice read-aloud. The vocabulary is right for the age group, but also makes sure to incorporate a couple more advanced words as well. It's not the best for first readers to attack on their own, though, not only due to those few words, but the font does make things a tiny bit more difficult for beginning readers.
I did enjoy this book quite a bit and can imagine that the rest of the series is worth digging into, too. I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed this book more than I thought I might.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from iRead Book Tours. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess by Deedee Cummings delivered a powerful message to any child reading or listening to the story. Be proud of who you are!
As the author stated, people can be mean sometimes, but it’s important not to pay attention to them. While that feat is difficult, it’s essential to teach children to value themselves over other people’s opinions of them.
As with any other children’s book I read, I always ask my daughter’s impression. Her opinion is important since she is the viewing audience. She’s a bit older than the target audience (3-7), but I still value her input. 🙂
Here’s what she had to say.
“I love the teddy bear on the cover since I love teddy bears. The highlight around the words makes it easier to read because the background is so careful. It makes the words pop on the pages. I love the background colors too. The pages look mystical or magical. Oh, and the fox is really cute.”
When I asked her what she’d score from 1-5, she said (without hesitation) a 5. I agree.
To start, the illustrations in this book are amazing! Bright, colorful, full – beautiful.
As a mom to a little princess myself, this book is perfect! And while it is geared towards little girls/princesses; the message that it sends is perfect for little boys too – our children are special, always, and even when people are mean and tell you, you are different; don’t pay them any mind.
Every child should have big dreams and should never let anyone snuff out that light! I am a firm believer that anyone can do and be anything they want so long as they put their mind to it and this story goes right along with that.
Further, this book is a great story for any child that looks different than your typical, average, every day child.
While I understand Deedee’s mission is to provide her children with books that have characters that look more like them; I feel the story also fits for children who may wear glasses, have a physical disability (one that can be seen), or in general is a child that doesn’t look like every other child in majority of children’s books.
The lesson to take away is that every child is special in their own unique way.
I am a big fan of Deedee’s children’s books. Her stories have great lessons for adults and kids alike. I feel like, as a mother of your standard children book’s character, it opens up a path of communication with my child about kids who look different than her.
Any books by Deedee Cummings is a great book for the children in your life!
Kayla: A Modern Day Princess begins a five installment series by Deedee Cummings. I have read other children’s books by this author and enjoyed them a lot. This one is no different. I loved that the character of Kayla is based on a Broadway actress, Kayla Pecchioni. Kayla is such an inspirational little girl and such a good influence and role model for others. I love the lessons learned in her story. She has big dreams to follow and has the support needed to do so. I admire her determination and courage to continue to make those dreams come true. It is such a fun and entertaining tale to read.
Kayla: A Modern Day Princess is illustrated by the very talented Charlene Mosley. The beautiful and vibrant pictures go perfectly with the story. They make it easy for all readers to follow along and keep them interested in the story even more.
Kayla: A Modern Day Princess will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I look forward to the next book in the series, Kayla: A Modern Day Princess: Dishes, Dancing, and Dreams, to catch up to where this special little girl goes to next. I highly recommend it for readers who are between the ages of four and ten years old. It would be a perfect addition to any library, especially in elementary school libraries.
I received paperback copy of Kayla: A Modern Day Princess from the publisher. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess by Deedee Cummings is a sweet book about Kayla. This is Book One in the series. Kayla lives with her mom and dad, but she doesn’t get to see her mom so much because of her working. But this doesn’t stop Kayla from dreaming, and her dreams are to work with the musical theater, something she loves very much. I have read several books by Deedee Cummings and enjoy them so much, and this one is just as awesome as the others. I especially like the close relationship Kayla has with her mom, and how her mom encourages Kayla to follow her dreams.
I like that Cummings writes a book such as this to show that young girls of any color or race can follow their dreams to be what they want to be. This book would be a great addition to your child’s library, it will sure encourage your child to be what they want to be. Being the first book in the series, there will me more to come from Deedee Cummings. I will be reviewing books two and three in the next few days so be sure to come back and see what these books are about.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
I was sent a review copy of Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess in exchange for an honest review as part of my participation in a blog tour for the series with iRead Book Tours. Thank you to all involved! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess is the story of little Kayla and her hardworking mother who does her best to make sure that Kayla knows she's special and loved and destined for great things, even if Mom has to work late most nights and doesn't get to put her to bed herself and other typical mother-daughter things like that.
The illustrations are beautiful and the message is great! I'm sure a lot of little kids (and their parents) will see themselves in these pages and feel seen and appreciated. The book description says ages 5+ and that does seem to be accurate, it isn't short and sweet enough for smaller kids and my 3.5-year-old wandered away before I was done reading. (She loves the pictures, though, and has now claimed the book!)
Written for a biodiverse audience, this book has a wonderful message for any ethnicity or gender.
Kayla and her mother have a close relationship, even though her mother's job makes her work late at night. She shares with Kayla that she works hard and puts in the time because she has a dream of doing more and becoming someone important. The book instills the message that if you do the work and dream the dreams, you can accomplish what you put your mind to.
Although a gift that Mom brings to Kayla may seem stereotypical, it is something that Kayla understands means that she should dream big and can make ANY dream come through. In the illustrations we see that Kayla has more than one dream, some less fanciful than others.
On the surface, this book may look better suited to girls, but the message applies to all, regardless of gender or even age.
Kayla is a sweet little girl and this story is the first part of a five-book series. Kayla lives with her mother and father. Her mother works late many nights and Kayla doesn’t always get to see her at bedtime. This one night, her father lets her wait up for her mother. Kayla imagines that her mother will bring her a present.
When her mother arrives home, Kayla gets up and hears her mother at the stairs. She jumps quickly back in bed before her mother enters the room. Kayla asks her mother if she will get a present. Her mother tells her of a big promotion she has received at work and Kayla is thrilled that her mother’s hard work has paid off. Then, her mother does give her a present. She places a shiny tiara on Kayla’s head and tells her how she is a princess who has a great life ahead.
Kayla is such a wonderful little girl. She has a loving mother who supports her and helps her see how special she is. I love the focus on family in this book. We really see what a lovely relationship Kayla and her mother have!
This is a story that so many children will love. It’s easy to connect with Kayla and for children to see themselves in her story. There is a great message about finding out who you want to be and pursuing that, as well as a wonderful reminder to enjoy your time together as a family! The illustrations are quite lovely, and my daughter absolutely enjoyed them!
I was provided a gifted copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
Kayla: A Modern Day Princess kicks off a new series from Deedee Cummings. This #ownvoices tale shows little girls that they can achieve whatever they set their mind to.
It also explores the relationship between a mother and daughter. Even though Mom has to work late most evenings, they still maintain a special bond.
Kayla portrays the magical wonderment of a young girl with all her dreams still playing out in from of her.
I've been a fan of Deedee Cummings work for quite a while. The Kayla series is projected to be a six-book project. I can not wait to read more. I'll be reviewing the first three in the series this week. Keep an eye out for them.
Kayla: A Modern Day Princess is a very cute book that has a sweet story and teaches important life lessons. I liked that the author showed a good mother daughter relationship, yet also showed that the mom could not always be around due to work. This made the book feel more real and helps kids to understand that a lack of time does not equal a lack of love.
I really liked that this book is a positve role model book. It is always good to dream big, especially for girls. This is the reinforcement they need. Although, I felt that there could have been more to the story. I kind of felt like I was reading the middle of a story with very little background.
We all need reminding every day that we are special and this book takes you there. Loved the images and the story's path of making everyone around you happy because you are always loved and special in our own ways.
This a beautiful story written by Deedee comings inspired by her daughter Broadway actress,Kayla Pecchioni. It is the first book in a five part series it is about family, knowing your worth and pursuing your dreams. Very inspirational and heart felt.
I enjoyed the characters, plot and bright illustrations very much! I loved reading about the family as they work on giving each other quality time as they pursue their dreams. Kayla is based on a Broadway actress, Kayla Pecchioni and it's great to see the character's confidence build as she moves towards her performance goals. This book will be a great addition to a home or school library! I will look for the other books in the 5-part series by this author. The series would be a heartwarming gift, too.
