A HISTORICAL NOVEL OF THE PERILS OF NEWLYWED LIFE AND ALL THAT COMES TO DIVIDE LOVERS

In 1897 newly married Beryl and Edward Massart travel more than one thousand miles from Quebec to farm a plot of land in Wisconsin that they bought sight-unseen. An almost magical grove of maples on their property inspires them to dream of a real home built within the grove, not the tiny log cabin they’ve come to live in.

Misunderstandings and tempers get the better of them when difficulties and troubles arise. Just months after they wed, Edward leaves pregnant Beryl in the midst of the coming winter to tend the farm and animals while he goes to be a teamster at a northern Wisconsin logging camp.

Will Beryl and Edward walk into the future together to build their house of dreams in the grove of maples, or will their plans topple like a house of sticks when the winds of misunderstanding and disaster strike?

Readers of Christian historical fiction, Historical fiction, Women’s fiction, and Christian historical romance will be endeared to this slice of late 19th century farm life.

“How young we were, unmarked by sorrow and grief, but life didn’t take long in acquainting us with them.”
First of all I truly love this beautiful cover and when I found out it was about Wisconsin where I lived for 11 years, I really wanted to read this historical book.
It is about the perils and hardships of a newly married couple who travel from home to the unknown wilderness of Wisconsin. I enjoyed this story gleaned from the history of the author. Beryl and Edward were patterned after her ancestors but much of the story was imagined as records were scarce. The author gave us a good account of how things might have been in 1897. It is set in a beautiful grove of maples.
While Beryl and Edward faced hardships, tragedy and disappointment, they learned through it all, to rely on God for their strength and learned to grow in their marriage even though they spent some early years apart.
This is my first book from Ms. Knipfer and I am intrigued by the possibility of further books in this series. This was a great start to a historical series.

This was the first book that I have read by this author and it was really a page turner! I loved the way the diary entries foreshadowed things to come, as they were written a few months prior to the events that were taking place in each chapter. It helped prepare me emotionally for upcoming sorrow in the story, while also serving to highlight Beryl’s thoughts and feelings about what was taking place in her life.

This novel followed the first year of marriage for Beryl and Edward. These two fell in love and then married and immediately moved far away from their families. It was the tale of two people who truly loved each other, but did not know each other very well. They struggled with communication, as well as anger and misunderstandings with each other. I felt sorry for them and hoped that they would learn to communicate.

There were some heartbreaking moments in this story, yet it retained a hopeful focus. I liked that Beryl had the support of friends who were concerned for her well being. I longed for Beryl and Edward to share their hearts with each other, whether in their letters or in person. I craved more time with these characters at the end of the story, yet the author did wrap things up nicely.

Five stars for this sweet and wonderful read!
I believe that this is Knipfer's best yet!
I think the best thing about this is story is that it offers hope to us readers that we can really get through the toughest times in our lives.
Such wonderful inspirational messages!
This book seems so realistic to me because I have some of the same problems that Beryl and Edward do. I must admit that I had to snicker at their thoughts on certain things. So me and I'm sure my husband's too.
This is the reason I loved this book so much. I could relate to half or most of what Beryl does. She's like my twin!
She has backbone that's what I admired about her.
I hope there's more to their story soon!
I will add this to my list of 2021 faves.
I highly recommend.
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own!

Jenny Knipfer did an awesome job portraying the challenges of a newly married couple trying to make a living on the frontier. This story was heartbreaking at times, but it is a true picture of what can happen to a marriage during times of great stress. Ultimately, this novel had a message of hope which makes it well worth the read. Other wonderful things about this novel are Jenny Knipfer's creative use of chronology, her characterization, and her descriptions of frontier life.

This was my first book by this author and I thought it was good. It describes the hardships and the good things about pioneer life through the eyes of a young married couple setting out from Canada over to the states for the first time. You experience the hardships of tending the land and setting up a homestead. The struggles of marriage as they set up a home we see them making difficult choices that makes an impact in their life.

Overall I thought the author did a good job at describing and making solid characters. I did have a hard time reading it and getting into the storyline. I think mainly it was because the storyline kept jumping back and forth which confused me at times and I felt like I was missing something. If the storyline would of stayed in chronological order I think it would've made me stayed engaged a bit more. That being said I think it was good and I do want to read her second one in hopes to see where the storyline goes.

If you enjoy Christian Historical Fiction then you will probably enjoy this one.

This is one of my favorite stories. I truly loved reading about Beryl and Edward.

Set in Wisconsin in 1897, Beryl and Edward a young just recently married couple travel from Quebec to Wisconsin to a piece of land that Edward bought for farming. Full of joy, adventure and dreams they set and start to form their home. But after a sudden storm leaves them with repairs Edward goes to work at a lumber mill leaving behind a young pregnant wife. But not only that, Edwards fast tempers leave their love up in air full of questions and assumptions.

Author Jenny Knipfer creates such a beautiful cast of characters and a story that leaves you wondering how strong, and brave these early settlers were and all that the endured. I enjoy how she tells her stories and the beginning of each chapter a quote is noted that puts together what that chapter will be of without saying it. How she describes with detail everything that you can picture it clearly in your mind.

After much detours, much heartache and loss, Beryl shows her strength and Faith in God to withstand all she has gone through alone while Edward is far away providing for his home and wife.
A story that will tug you at your heart with all the emotions that these characters bring out to show how it was back then. The true friendships that Beryl makes along the way with neighbors and people in the small town, and the love that withstands everything insight, proves to a young couple that together as one team they can move forward.

Author Jenny, did a remarkable story that captured your imagination to the early settlers and their adventurous hearts.

I received a complimentary ebook copy of this story. For my personal honest review.

Highly recommend this story to every Historical story lover as well as everyone. 10 stars from me.

This is the first book of the new series – Sheltering Trees. And a charming start at that.

Sweet, blissful romance is put to the test of a young newlywed couple still trying to adjust to life changes. Together they go through tragedy, disappointments and a strange wilderness neither of them is prepared for. Through it all, this story offers hope.

It’s well written and the characters are very relatable. Knowing the story is inspired by actual history of the authors ancestors makes it that much more interesting. I am looking forward to reading where this series takes us next.

I was waiting eagerly for the audio edition of this book. What can I say? I’m in awe.
“In a Grove of Maples” is a captivating novel: a whirlwind of emotions sucks you in for you to feel the breath of life. What a lovely read it is!
Beryl and Edward’s love story could be a survival guide for every young couple. If hardship hits, our level of trust, devotion, acceptance, honesty, faithfulness, stamina, patience, faith etc will be put to the test, and the sincere words “I love you” can save us from the unnecessary turmoil and temptation.
I read and loved all Jenny’s novels, and I’m already looking forward to the release of her next book.

Love endures all things...

This is perhaps one of my favorite books that I’ve read, I didn’t want it to end. I loved how relatable the characters were and how the author captured true human feelings. Growing up in the rural farmland of Wisconsin I felt a true connection to the story, picturing what my ancestors must have felt settling in Wisconsin beginning to farm. The author did wonderful with historical accuracy; including running a small dairy farm, town life, social life and even down to traditional meals that folks from Wisconsin are familiar with.

I loved how the story wasn’t a fairytale, because unfortunately that isn’t life. There are bumps, rough patches and heartache along the way. The settlers that came to these areas they tried to tame the wilderness, dealt with loneliness and feeling secluded but also enjoyed the good times with family and friends in a close knit community; that is the way it was and the author clearly shows that throughout the story. I also appreciated the true human feelings throughout the book, how many times we just don’t say how we feel and we assume which leads us to problems. This story is a blend of heartache, feelings of longing, the challenges faced by settlers and most of all the enduring quality of love.

Jenny Knipfer’s newest release, In a Grove of Maples, felt like coming home. With hints of Janette Oke and Little House on the Prairie, Knipfer takes her readers into a place and time that felt so nostalgic, I could practically hear my own grandmother telling me her story through the pages. Featuring the struggles of Beryl and Edward Massart, In a Grove of Maples highlights the pioneering struggles of establishing a life amid natural disasters, the perils of logging camps, and personal heartache. Romantic, rife with emotion, and brimming with truth, Knipfer weaved a story that truly touched my heart. I highly recommend delving into this book!

I discovered Author Jenny Knipfer a couple years ago and I truly enjoy all her books that I have read. I am also a fan of Christian Historical Fiction. In a Grove of Maples is the newest book by Jenny Knipfer and is Book #1 in the Sheltering Trees series.

We are taken back to the year 1897 and the place is Wisconsin. Beryl and Edward Massart are newlyweds and they just bought land in Wisconsin, even though they are from Quebec. They never saw the land until they arrive in Wisconsin. The land is filled with Maple Trees and they dream of building a house on the property one day, as they currently live in the small Log Cabin on the land. Beryl and Edward have their share of Newlywed tempers and troubles. Winter comes and Edward heads North to work at a Logging Camp. Beryl stays back on the Farm to tend to the animals and the Farm during the Winter, and she is also pregnant. The resentment and newlywed issues continue. They have dreams of building that large home and making a good life on the Farm. Will they overcome the Newlywed issues and move forward together? Will the future be put on hold due to the troubles in the marriage?

I can honestly say this has to be my favorite book by Jenny Knipfer that I have ever read!! I LOVE the Newlywed, Farm Life, Log Cabin Living storyline. I really appreciate that Jenny makes the storyline relatable to the everyday reader. The Small Town Neighbors and friendliness of the Town people are so encouraging. I really like how Beryl relies on her Faith in God to get her through the trials of marriage. Edward has a temper that needed to be controlled and near the end of the book, it seems he is changing. In a Grove of Maples is a story of LOVE, Faith and enduring the trials that life brings you. A MUST Read for fans of Christian Historical Fiction and Farm Life Living!

My review: Beryl and Edward move across the country to obtain land to start a new farm and a new life. This story is set in Canada, so I learned about the westward expansion in Canada, which is similar to the migration in the US.

Beryl and Edward were newly married when they set out on the long journey. They were learning how to work together as a couple in the very trying circumstances of the long wagon train trip. When they finally finally arrived, they began their homestead. But communication was still a problem, both trying to figure out how to express what they need and want with each other. This created significant problems for both!

This was an interesting book, but I was quite disappointed in the ending. I will not spoil it for you, but it was not what I expected.

In A Grove of Maples
author: Jenny Knipfer
narrator: Jenn Lee

A group of maple trees on a hill in the community of Maple Grove provides a stunning setting for Knipfer's story of faith, family and friends in 1890s rural Wisconsin. This book is the first in this talented author's Sheltering Trees series.
Newlyweds Beryl and Edward Massart left their roots in Quebec, Canada to start a new life in Wisconsin, living in a small log cabin near the maple grove. A storm caused damage in 1897, and Edward soon went north to work in a lumber camp. Although Beryl was a strong, courageous woman, the hardships and heartbreak were many as she struggled to maintain their home and provide life's necessities while Edward was away. Beryl and Edward's story is one not only of their love, but also of the unique challenges and trials they faced as a struggling, young married couple. Beryl often went to the maple grove to pray, rest, and reflect as she navigated her life journey.
This book is well-researched Christian historical fiction at its best. Knipfer studied maps, history books, and reviewed geography, lumber camps, food preservation techniques, farming practices and livestock management during this time period. Her lovely, unique writing style, using Beryl's diary entries combined with an alternating time line narrative, provides a realistic glimpse into ties that bound people together as they worked hard to maintain homes and community: church, handwork such as quilting, neighborly kindness, communication, social interaction and old fashioned work ethics. Audiobook narrator Jenn Lee's warm voice and reading style pair beautifully with the story. I'll fondly remember this educational and endearing book and look forward to the next tree in the Sheltering Trees series. As a lover of audiobooks, I was honored to receive this audiobook from Jenny Knipfer and have the opportunity to review it.

In a Grove of Maples is book one in the Sheltering Trees series by Jenny Knipfer. This story takes place in Wisconsin in the late 1890’s and gives a nice glimpse into what life may have been for farmers during that time. This is my favorite genre to read and I especially love books based in the north central US. This story starts with Beryl and Edward getting married in Quebec and moving to Wisconsin to a farm his cousin helped them purchase sight unseen, far from family and friends. The story tells of the hard work and trials they had with the first year on their farm as well as the struggles with adjusting to married life.

I just love this book and can’t wait for the rest in the series. The writing is so clear it is easy to imagine the surroundings. It is also so honest and paints a picture of what life really is, rather than sugar coating it. I admire the strength Beryl had to take care of their farm while Edward worked away from home, especially while expecting a baby. This is a great story that shows the importance of neighbors caring for each other, especially when tragedy strikes and family is not around to help. I enjoyed reading Beryl’s journaling and how it triggered flashback to months earlier and events that happened that tells the story of love, grief, strength and endurance. I also enjoyed the parts that are told from Edwards point of view and the difficult decision he made to work away from home to help the family.

I received a complimentary ebook from the author, this is my honest review.

Well-drawn portrait of a marriage's early years

I enjoyed In a Grove of Maples very much. Beryl and Edward's newly-married struggles to adjust to each other felt real and relatable. I don't usually read this time period (late 1800s), and it was a nice break from my usual WWI and WWII fare.

I have just finished reading In A Grove Of Maples, and I highly recommend it. It is about the struggles and heartache, as a young married couple. They have to realize what is important and how they have to trust in the Lord and trust in each other, which at times is hard. But with the help of God, and neighbors and friends, and 2 good horses, they have a shot at living the life they dreamed of.

The story was great and the narration was good.
From Canada to Wisconsin the story was about a newlywed pioneer couple told in flashbacks, a diary, and letters in a most unusual way. Some of the events were revealed before the events were explained in letters. It held my attention throughout. First in a series, I intend to read more from this author.

This story is about a married couple (named Beryl and Edward) set in the late 1800s and the challenges their marriage goes through. They struggle through different situations like tornado to seperation so they can pay off debts. There is so much that happens in this beautifully written with such wonderful characters. The back and forth with time periods works well for this story along with the way the author breaks the changes up so the reader can follow the story. Such a good read.

In a Grove of Maples (Sheltering Trees Book #1) by Jenny Knipfer

In a Grove of Maples is the first novel I’ve read by Jenny Knipfer. I was eager to dive into this story that takes place in the late 1800s and focuses on newlyweds, Beryl and Edward, who leave everything behind in Canada to start a new life in a Wisconsin farming community.

I’ll admit that I was a bit thrown off at first because the author continually moved from the past to the present and back again—and often within the same chapter. The fallout from conflict was sometimes relayed before sharing what initially caused the problem. My preference is to live out a story in chronological order with the characters and be affected by what I discover as the tale plays out. But that’s me—other readers may feel differently.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. I was drawn in by wonderful descriptions of the setting and life during the time period. But what impressed me most was the author’s ability to delve deep into the characters’ emotions. As the husband and wife face physical challenges, they also struggle internally. As readers, we’re given the privilege of viewing their marriage through their thoughts and feelings—all portrayed with realism and completely believable.

I believe historical fiction is at its best when it shows how the past still relates to the present. Circumstances may change, but people remain the same, and we struggle with similar things as our ancestors faced. When there is miscommunication, or couples don’t talk at all, division, misunderstandings, and hurt can result. Temptation, loss, and the need for forgiveness are ongoing, no matter the century. Friendships and a supportive community can make the difference between merely surviving or thriving.

Through story, In a Grove of Maples bridges the past with the present. I’ll be thinking about these characters for days to come. 4.5 Stars

In a Grove of Maples was such a sweet and swift read! There was nothing that made this novel a page turner, and yet I found myself gripped in the wonderful writing of Jenny Knipfer.

Each chapter starts out with a diary entry a few weeks in the future, and the chapter takes you back to the present, giving light to the events that lead up to that particular diary entry. At first, it threw me off, but once I got into the novel I could easily understand the pattern, and quite enjoyed seeing the future before it happened. This is a unique style, one that I haven't seen in awhile, which gave In a Grove of Maples a refreshing feel, set apart from the typical troupe.

Very character driven, In a Grove of Maples takes you through the journey after Edward and Beryl say "I do," and leave their families to cleave to each other, and embark on a journey neither of them dreamed. Showing the sweet, tender moments between the newlyweds, as well as the strife, this book shows the truer sides of marriage, both the good and the bad. Being married 8 1/2 years myself, I saw glimpses of my early marriage, and there were moments when I was even examining my own self, thinking about the heartaches that I've went through during my own time with my husband.

I connected with the characters, and appreciated all the characters that supposed Beryl during such a difficult and trying time, especially Paul and Nola. To have good neighbors is such a blessing!

In a Grove of Maples does have touches of faith throughout, but it is no way preachy. It instead was a subtle nudge that shifts the focus of the story for brief moments, making the reader look inside themselves, examining their own faith, and then it is right back into the narrative. I really appreciated those little whispers, and I know many will be blessed by this novel.

Seeing a love that is stronger that its circumstances is a testament of faith, and a motivation for all of us that are also sharing our lives with others. Persevere through the day to day, cling to one another, bear each others burdens, and just watch what the Lord will do.

Canadian newlyweds Edward and Beryl leave Canada to settle and build a farm in 1800s Wisconsin. They're deeply in love, although Beryl wishes that strong, silent-type Edward would tell her more about his feelings. Still, they're embarking on an adventure and love the beautiful place they've settled.

Challenges cause the couple to run out of money, and Edward decides to leave Beryl to run the farm while he goes north to work in a logging camp. He hopes he'll make enough for them to maintain the farm. However, Beryl is troubled that he's leaving her, a former city girl, to be in charge of the farm and its animals. And, by the way, she is pregnant!

More challenges are ahead, in the form of rough coworkers, untrustworthy townsfolk, and Beryl's time alone on the farm. Fortunately, the couple can write letters to each other; and there are near neighbors who not only support Beryl with the farm, but with their faith as well.

Will Edward and Beryl survive their physical separation, and their unspoken wishes for their marriage? In a Grove of Maples is told from both of their POVs, and the timeline switches from past, to future, to present, as each one shares their hopes, dreams, and difficulties. Knipfer has written a beautiful and rich story of what life might have been like for early settlers, both in the geographical and physical challenges, as well as the emotional ones faced by men and women in the 1800s. Don't miss this lovely book!

In a Grove of Maples is a book unlike any I have read before. With the way that it is written in part Beryl’s dairy entries four to six months in the future, and the rest in the third person narrative that many months prior, it did something that no other book I’ve ever read has. It was like learning what was going to happen before it actually occurred. Definitely an interesting way to tell a story. However, I have to say, I’m not so sure I liked it. It took the mystery out of actually reading the chapters and finding out what was going to happen. By the time you got to that month in the story, you already knew the major things that happened because you read about them in a diary entry multiple chapters ago.

Although I hate to focus on the negative, it seems that I am pretty picky when it comes to the books I read. Because there’s more. I really wish I could say that I enjoyed the rest of this story, but I just found it so hard to stay interested. Even though I can definitely understand the ups and downs that come with marriage, and wanted Beryl and Edward to figure it out, I felt like the plot line needed even more to keep the story going.

All in all, it was a cute little story, and did have some interesting aspects to it. I definitely think that if you aren’t quite as picky as me, you won’t have any trouble enjoying this book!

In a Grove of Maples by Jenny Knipfer is a book about what comes after the honeymoon. It’s not always pretty. There are disappointments, miscommunications, hurt feelings, and heartbreak, but there is also love. And love is stronger than all those previously mentioned things.

As Beryl and Edward move away from family to the wilds of Wisconsin, a small group of people come around this couple and support them. As Knipfer details the relationships between Beryl and the women in her new community, they become their own sort of family.

The descriptive settings in the book take you right there and the historical detail confirms the difficulties of life without our modern-day conveniences.

A portion of this book is told through Beryl’s journal entries, so there is some back and forth in the timeline (with four months between them), which was confusing at first but one I really settled into the story, I didn’t notice it as much. And it definitely didn’t detract from the story of holding onto faith through the hard times and fighting for a happy and contented life.

This quick read describes pioneer life as this young couple moves away from family to begin farming in Wisconsin. While the couple struggles, they are surrounded by a small group of neighbors that help support them. As real life sets in these honeymooners have difficult choices to make. I found the storyline interesting. But I think that if the author had simply told the story in chronological order instead of using different time lines, the story might have flowed better.
