This is a very sad story. I wouldn’t even call it a romance, it’s more a historical epic , considering the H & h were on different continents for most of the novel. 99% of the book is tragic, but it ends abruptly without resolution, just promises of more separation. It’s also predictable considering the laws of the day, after a certain event occurs there was really only one way to resolve it. Boring and too convenient. The author has a very dry voice, so even though some very difficult things happened it never touched my heart. The audiobook is AI and it’s really bad. The mispronunciations are very annoying and it even occasionally misread the text, for instance it reads Charlotte as C-harlot and George is Gee-orge. I’ve listened to several AI generated books which aren’t bad but this one is dreadful.

Admittedly, I’ve been holding off for a while in reviewing this story, since I actually found it a really hard one to rate. I don’t want to negatively influence anyone’s opinion of the story. There were a lot of aspects about it that I thought were fine.
The storyline itself for instance intrigued me right from the start and I think it has a lot of potential.

Unfortunately, the main difficulty I had with this story is in the way it flows/reads.
I felt very disconnected from the characters’ for instance. It felt like I was on the outside looking in, rather than actually being able to experience the story with them. There were also times when there was a wealth of detail for a lot of little things - settings for internal and external environments and clothing, for instance - but then not so much to help describe/explain what was going on inside the characters’ minds. Not much to help me appreciate their thoughts and emotions. It was like it jumped from one attitude to the next. There was little to no transition to help me understand them or to explain why the character now felt so strongly about this or that. It also seemed to escalate rather dramatically for the two main characters’ relationship. It seemed like they went from just being barely acquainted to being suddenly in love.

Basically, for me, reading each page felt like just that - reading words on a page. I wasn’t able to really immerse myself in the story.
As I said, the storyline has potential and the characters themselves are good, although a touch dramatic for my own taste.
Overall, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

I received an ARC of this book from the author however this in no way influenced my opinion and I am under no obligation to leave this review.

This romance was very different from most I read. I won't do spoilers but this love story does not follow a straight path to its happily ever after. So many twists and turns to get there. Along the way their is separation, angst, grief, depression, hopelessness, and acceptance until it finally turns to full joy.

I liked Charlotte and Henry. And I even liked George by the end. Charlotte's parents are something else. Her mother is a piece of work. Wow.

The original title of this book is Convincing Charlotte but then changed to Misfortune is a Rolling Tide. While I like the original title better I think, the new title is much more descriptive of the book.

Sex: attempted seducement
Language: no
Violence: some

Clean romance

I enjoyed this book even though my heart went out to the two main characters that were tossed about by fate and the selfishness of a parent.

I REALLY cannot believe how awful and greedy the parent was in this story. I wanted to shake her!

The author did a great job of making the characters come to life and made them lovable or not… and the plot keeps twisting enough to wonder where it would end.

I do need to point out a bit of the story that was confusing. The premise that Charlotte had to marry to save her family due to a dowry is not true. Dowry is the bride’s parents’ responsibility to the groom. A bride price is what would be paid to the bride’s family and is not as common. But the premise was needed for the story to work.

Life and love aren't always easy. In fact, they rarely are and the path for Charlotte and Henry is a twisty, rough road. I was just talking to someone about how it isn't fair when challenges and trials are sent your way because of the choices and actions of someone else and this is a classic case of that. A heartbreaking, classic case.

I would have loved to pick the inner workings of the character's brains more, but the story was pleasant and entertaining, and there is something satisfying about a relationship that takes a lot of hard work to get there.

Charlotte and Henry have a unique love, but many forces, including misunderstandings and unfortunate events, stand in their way. The separate paths they take definitely shape their individual characters and I really appreciated that.

This is a different type of Regency romance, but it was enjoyable in its own way.

Content: mild war/illness-related scenes; death; mild romance
