Holly Wakefield Thriller #3

When Silence Kills

Rate this book
A killer so clever, nobody hears the screams . . .

When the mutilated body of a woman is discovered in her home, DCI Bishop from the Met murder squad is called in to oversee the case. The horrific killing bears a striking resemblance to three other murders years before, but the cases were never solved. Bishop knows they need the help of Holly Wakefield, a criminal psychologist who specialises in getting inside the minds of serial killers.

The grisly murders occur every three years, but it is the stick-man drawing left at each crime scene that has the police baffled. A post-mortem also detects a cocktail of drugs that can leave a victim screaming in silence. No one would have heard their cries for help.

Holly suspects that they are a missing a vital clue that links the victims. But can she discover the link before the killer comes knocking at her door?

The twisty, heart-racing new serial killer thriller in the Holly Wakefield series, perfect for fans of Robert Bryndza, Angela Marsons and Stuart MacBride.

This is the latest in Mark Griffin's terrific crime series featuring forensic psychologist Holly Wakefield, a woman with her own traumatic personal history, she is an academic teaching at King's College in the Behavioural Sciences and works at Wetherington Hospital, where her brother, Lee, is incarcerated for murder. This is the third case in which she is taken on as consultant by DI Bill Bishop, an ex-military cop running Hammersmith's Major Crimes Unit, the pair have developed a close relationship. The horrific murder of a sex worker, 'Vee', in Brighton, her eyes stabbed, and a child like stick drawing left at the scene, echoes the MO of 2 cold case murders of a retired GP in 2013 and Mike Thomas in 2016, with 3 years between each killing, suggesting a disciplined and intelligent killer.

The original 2 investigations were led by now retired DCI Eddie Walker, with Bishop working on both cases, only for them to be frustrated and defeated by a complete lack of leads. Bishop now leads the reopening of the cold cases, with a large team that closely liases with Sussex CID. Struggling to pinpoint the true identity of Vee, it is hard to find any connections between the three murder victims, despite the team working flat out, whilst having to contend with the most troubling of journalists, Andy Brook. Holly is certain there are other murders they have yet to uncover, simply because she is certain the adept, forensically aware killer didn't emerge fully formed without having had previous form as she highlights the elements that characterise serial killers. Additionally, Holly's haunting past comes to the fore as her parents killer is up for parole, testing her to her emotional limits, whilst she finds herself in grave danger as the pieces begin to finally come together as they begin to close in on the killer, concluding in a shocking finale.

Griffin writes a suspenseful and tense crime story, outlining closely the investigative team's processes and progress, capturing the dedication and commitment of the hard working police team, pulling out all the stops, desperate not to repeat past failures. Bishop and Holly's relationship continues to develop, both relying on and supporting each other, attracted to each other despite each of them feeling broken, there is Holly's trauma and the difficulties Bishop has in getting over the death of his fiancee, Sarah, in Afghanistan, with him finally making the choice to see a therapist. This was a compulsive crime read, dark and intense, and it concludes in such a manner that it is clear where the next book in the series is going. Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.

It's been over a month since I read this and all I remember is the writing being hella bland (very disappointing after #2 was beautifully written) and the baddie's motivation honestly deserved a 0. Bishop and Wakefield need to pick up the pace in this lil romance of theirs. Oil pantings have quite literally dried faster than their physical relationship has progressed. Good cliffhanger though... according to my barely decipherable notes lol.

I was certainly not disappointed by this book. It was just astounding.

Holly Wakefield, a criminal psychologist who gets in the minds of serial killers, is brought in when a young women is horrifically murdered in Brighton. The killer left behind a child like stickman drawing that corresponds with two cold cases; a doctor in 2013 and Mike Thomas in 2016. A pattern is emerging, three years between each killing indicating that the killer is intelligent and follows a strict routine.
Holly is working alongside DI Bishop for the third time, who is ex-military and runs Hammersmith's Major Crime Unit.
The last two murders where led by DCI Eddie Walker who has now retired but is keen to lend a helping hand to finally get the killer behind bars. It is proving a struggle to identify the young women who is only know as 'Vee' to those that knew her, as well as trying to find a connection between the three murders. Not only this but their having to deal with the ever so annoying journalist Andy Brooks. Holly is certain that there are other murders that haven't been uncovered yet or linked to these three cases.
Whilst dealing with the case Holly is dealing with her own traumatic history. The killer who murdered her parents is up for parole putting her to the edge of her limits. They finally start to piece together the jigsaw which results in a jaw-dropping finale.

The author creates a suspenseful, dark and intense crime story which made it hard to put down. The ending of the book clearly indicates where the next book is going. I can't believe I've got to wait until February for its release.

When Silence Kills disappointingly underwhelmed me.
Although still enjoyable, this 3rd instalment is carried mainly by the easily digestible writing style and flawless narration.

The plot here fell very flat, and this will be an entirely personal thing, but I didn't get enough gore and gruesome detail. There were no intriguing interactions with a psychopath to thrill me, and the horror element (the male victims were castrated) was not even that horrible.

Even though the twists and turns at the end were unexpected, and I enjoyed the storytelling, this all felt off beat in comparison to the first 2 books. This was, to me, more filler rather than a full separate case. Also, this book sets up the next, and I am a weakling with mild ocd, so I will be over here reading the 4th book in the series. Okay, ✌️

I have been waiting (impatiently) for this next instalment of the Holly Wakefield thriller series and I will say I was not disappointed at all.

It was a bit of a slow burn to begin with which I like lots of building and gathering facts and suspects all the usual police work you would expect. The kills were so incredibly brutal so you thought for sure it has to be this person or that person or someone like that. In the end I didn’t guess who it was and I never had an inkling which is just how I like my twists.

Holly is a great character feminine with just the right amount of weirdness to make her quirky and fun and Bishop is your brooding but caring silent type. The building relationship these two have is always on the edge and I think that adds to the character development.

There will be no spoilers from me, but I will say there are a few things going on in this story along side each other and it’s all very interesting and the ending is a bit of a holy crap what did I just read moment!! So do it, go on buy and read it you know you want to!!!

A prostitute is murdered and there are striking comparisons to two other murders 3 & 6 years before. There appears to be no links. It emerges there is a connection to a fire at a girls school years before, when 3 girls died. All the victims have a connection somehow. But what is the connection, and who is the murderer? Several twists in the story. Is there a follow up in the future? A great read 9/10.

Another cracking book from Mark Griffin. This a classic serial killer story as the reader tries to work out the culprit. Wonderfully written with a perfectly executed plot this is full of tension. Dark, compelling and intense which just leaves you wanting to read ‘just one more chapter’. Bishop and Holly are brilliant characters and we get more of an insight into Holly as her past runs alongside the current murder story. (Highly recommend you read these books in order) The twist at the end is genius.

This is a great crime thriller.
The body of a woman is found and it’s clear the killer is very disturbed. With multiple stab wounds and in particular her eyes, Bishop and Holly are determined to catch the person responsible.
When Bishop sees the drawing of stick people he knows it’s the same killer he tried to find years earlier.
Another person is soon killed and again their eyes have been stabbed and a drawing is left behind.
It takes a while but Holly eventually pieces it all together and just when they think it’s all finished, there’s a real shock in store.
Holly is also dealing with some personal issues as the person who killed her parents has asked for parole.
The ending of the book leaves the next story nicely lined up, and I can’t wait to find out what’s in store.
Thanks to Little Brown Book Group UK and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Although the main story is contained well herein, for maximum enjoyment, specifically with regard to the main characters, their backstories and development, I do recommend you start from book one and read in order.
So... we start with the mutilated body of a woman in her own home. It bears quite a resemblance to other murders from a few years back, the perpetrator of which has never been found. Enter DI Bishop to investigate. He immediately calls in Holly Wakefield, a criminal psychologist as it's obvious her talents could well assist. On investigating the murders, they now link them, they puzzle over the drawings that have been left at each scene. What is the significance? What have others missed in their investigations that Holly could now find? What indeed... and with the net closing in on the killer, will they catch them before they find themselves as targets?
I loved Holly's first two outings and I loved this one just as much. It hit the ground running, sucked me in for the duration, and spat me out at the end, exhausted but satisfied. I love Holly as a character, especially her interaction with Bishop, both personal and professional. Holly is somewhat distracted in this book as she has some personal stuff to come to grips with which also concerns her brother. But she manages to close the door on all that enough to assist the police. Bishop has his own demons which also threaten to derail him but, by the end of the book, it looks like he will be more on an even keel come the next outing.
Pacing is good, consistent with the narrative and ramps up nicely as we reach the conclusion. There is also no superfluous padding or waffle to be found, and the characters' personal stuff complements the case being investigates rather than overshadowing it.
All in all, a cracking addition to a series which is shaping up nicely. Roll on next time. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Little, Brown Book Group UK for a review copy of When Silence Kills, the third novel to feature forensic psychologist Holly Wakefield and DI Bill Bishop of the Hammersmith Major Crimes Unit.

When a woman is found murdered in her home, her wounds and the stick man drawing left beside her remind Bishop of two unsolved cold cases murders, one from three years and one from six years ago. With no clues, motive or links between the victims he asks Holly to consult.

I thoroughly enjoyed When Silence Kills, which is an absorbing read with an intriguing plot. The novel is mostly told from Holly’s point of view and that allows the reader to get immersed in events and guess alongside her. I couldn’t put it down as I tried to formulate theories and beat her to the punch, mostly unavailingly I must confess.

On the whole the plot is well paced with strategic reveals and logical, organic developments. There is one glaring exception to this that became quite annoying. How can they not identify the victim when she has her own house and apparently claims benefits? It turns out that a few developments hinge on who she is and the author wanted to save it for later in the novel, but still, it’s not particularly credible. Having said that, this is the only misstep in an otherwise excellent read.

The novel concentrates on the hunt for an unusual serial killer and is compelling reading, but there is a subplot concerning the murderer of Holly’s parents. The author has a fair stab at describing her feelings, but I couldn’t quite relate to it, probably because I’ve never been in that position.

When Silence Kills is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

What a book, I don't even know where to begin. I picked this book up and couldn't put it down. This is the third book in the holly Wakefield series but honestly its the only one I have read so far and I wouldn't say I struggled to keep up with what was going on, so it can be read as a stand alone book. I am definitely going to be finding the other books. This book was full of twists and turns, everything nicely interlinked and all made sense by the end but I didn't see the ending coming at all.

Instead of the book written in the murders point of view it wasn't it was written from the police point of view. If you enjoy watching shows like Line of Duty you should read this book. I enjoyed reading about how the police broke down the case and tried to profile the murderer, it made the book much more interesting. The main characters weren't annoying I found them quite compelling, the backstories behind everyone was told throughout the book especially Holly Wakefield. If your looking for a good thriller to pick up this autumn read this one.

Netgalley can be a great way to discover new series and I discovered this one a couple of year ago.
It was love at first page and I read in one setting. It had a bizarre side effect because I use to read mostly traditional and cozy mystery and the story changed my taste,
I've been waiting for two years for this one and all of my high expectations were met.
It was another story I read in one setting as was involved in Holly and Bishop personal story and fascinated by the investigation in the terrible killings.
It's a nail biting, twisty, and quite dark story that kept me on the edge, a page turner I couldn't put down.
Great plot and character development, excellent storytelling.
I can't wait to read the next story.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Hmmm, it’s an ok story, a solid 3 stars (but nothing more, it’s way to derivative and formulaic for that) but my goodness the edition I have is terribly badly edited! The victim, despite living in a house (for which bills etc would be required) is known only as Vee. Except for the once or twice the name Verity slips in, from who knows where? Then another victim is said to have “made two phone calls that night”. No, he didn’t, he made one call that night, and received one from his ex-wife. Whom he had called earlier that day, as stated a couple of pages further on. Then we have “Chloe, in a BMW Range Rover….” I’m sure there will be more stupid errors as I’m only 2/3 of the way through.

Audiobook review:
This is another fantastic instalment in the Holly Wakefield series of books. The action begins immediately with the gruesome murder of a sex worker in Brighton, the killer leaving behind a stick figure drawing that links to a previous series of unsolved killings.
Holly and Bishop jump into the investigation and soon discover a link between the victims that eventually leads to a violent showdown with the murderer.
Running alongside this is the continuing storyline related to the murder of Holly's parents as the vicious killer is up for early parole.
The final chapters of the book set up the story nicely for the fourth (possibly final??) tale.

I absolutely devoured this. In my view it's the best of the series so far. Griffin expertly sets up various strands in this book, slowly knotting them together as it goes on, and the ending is one of the most enjoyable conclusions of any novel I've read. And the TWISTS! Highly recommended for anyone into thrillers or murder mysteries or anyone who appreciates beautifully crafted writing and plots.

Book three featuring crime-solving duo DI Bishop and forensic psychologist Holly Wakefield. A childlike stick drawing is left at the scene of the horrific and violent killing of prostitute "Vee", stabbed multiple times in her eyes. The murder links to two cold cases, spread three years apart. A deadly game of cat-and-mouse begins as the duo close in on this unusual serial killer. A dark and intense thriller, highly recommended.

amazing ending - totally unpredictable. the tense build-up to the ending was truly suspenseful and fast-paced, i kept turning the pages to read. it was fun to read.

the book was filled full of facts about serial killers and the reasons holly gave as to why the killer in the book would’ve wanted to kill was really interesting. i feel like this book has sparked a new interest in true crime.

the ending was great, i definitely want to read the next book.
