Clarice Beech #2

The Man Who Vanished and the Dog Who Waited

Rate this book
' A real treat . . . I loved it. Cats, dogs, murder and a credible and relatable heroine' Barbara Nadel

Summer in the Lincolnshire Wolds and Clarice is rung by her friend Louise, asking whether she can look after Susie, her son's lively Boxer, as 41-year-old Guy has gone missing from the family home.

His mother thinks he has been suffering from depression but more worryingly, in his professional life, he had been working on a high-profile case, defending a known criminal. His home life was beset with problems too, which is why his mother has asked Clarice to look after the dog; Charlotte, Guy's wife, just can't cope with her as well as their three daughters.

Getting drawn into the puzzle of Guy's disappearance, Clarice wonders how Susie received a nasty cut to her back leg, and who is the mysterious Charles? Guy apparently did not trust him enough to let him into his home, and he had not been seen since he was driven away in Charles car. Guy's friends all say that he was a good, honest man, but as Clarice looks further into the murky criminal world he inhabits, she questions if Guy has been pulled in out of his depth. And - why does Susie keep returning to the private woods, where she had spent so much time with her beloved master....

Thanks to Netgalley, The publisher and the author for accepting me to receive an ARC to read and review.

This is the second book in a cozy mystery series by Kate High but you really don’t need to read the first book as it goes over a few things so you don’t feel like yours missing anything at all, but I would love to read the first in the series too.

You can really feel the authors love for animals in this book as they have a part all the way through the book which I loved as I’m an animal lover myself.

I found myself becoming engrossed in the story one Tuesday afternoon whilst in a hospital waiting area, I was disappointed when I had to leave to make my way home if I’m being honest but I knew I could read it when I got home.

Goodness me this was dull, a flat narrative with no real light and shade and characters so one dimensional you'd fail to see them if they turned sideways. It was a rather stilted tale that didn't lift as you read it, it just plodded along at the same low level.

Lots of repetition - she fed the cats, walked the dogs, fed the cats, walked the dogs, fed the cats, walked the dogs - you get the idea.

Also too many animal references in the text that added nothing to the story and why did everyone Clarice met remind her of a breed of dog?

The conclusion was blatantly obvious too. Not a series I'd choose to continue with.

This is an excellent mystery in which a man suddenly disappears from his life, with no clues as to his whereabouts. When a friend of his mother decides to help, it gets more complicated when it seems like the dog is giving a clue, which no one can figure out. There are deep-seated problems within the man's family, however, and eventually they come out, and the secrets eventually lead to clues about the man's disappearance.

I enjoyed this book more than the first one as the characters were easier to follow and the writing felt more relaxed and casual. However, the main plot really dragged on and wasn’t vibing with me.

4.5 ⭐️⭐️ Second title in the series featuring Clarice Beech, her detective husband Rick Beech, various colleagues and friends and so many delightful pets and rescue animals. Set during the summer in the Lincolnshire Wolds Clarice becomes involved in the disappearance of her friend Louise’s son, Guy, his family situation and his injured dog. A complicated mystery unfolds with several twists and turns.

This is a nice, easy, gentle read by an author who uses her own experience as an animal welfare volunteer to make the main character, Clarice Beech, sound really authentic.

Although dog lovers will absolutely adore the hound-related back stories, I found the spotlight on the animals distracting for the first few chapters, but from then on they became part of Clarice’s character rather than a focus in themselves. I urge other readers to persist past that point; it’s worth it. Clarice uses her understanding of pet owners’ feelings towards their animals to help her make sense of the clues in the plot.
Kate has written nice, rounded characters, although my favourite, Georgie’s, appearances are somewhat fleeting. I think I’d like her as a friend of my own: lively, fun, brash, gossipy and with no self-editing, ’Like a piece of machinery with the function button jammed.’

There were some passages which felt as though they should have been connected to the plot but which actually went nowhere and felt a little like padding. And I found the ease with which Clarice got her information - not actually being an official investigator – grated a bit; it should have needed more artifice.

But, all in all, I enjoyed the story and the denouement was quite satisfying.

This book just wasn't for me.incredibly slow paced and a lot of the book added nothing to the story I actually skipped the last 2 chapters. It's a shame because the actual plot was good...I just didn't need to read 3/4 of a book that was essentially about animals.

Der Hund, der mit den Pfoten scharrte

Ein Fall für Clarice Beech - zweiter Teil

Klappentext

I would like to thank Netgalley and Little, Brown Book Group UK for a review copy of The Man who Vanished and the Dog who Waited, the second novel to feature ceramicist and pet refuge owner Clarice Beech, set in Lincolnshire.

Clarice’s friend Louise asks her to take Susie, her son Guy’s dog for a few days because Guy has disappeared. He has not been seen since he drove off with Charles, a business contact early one morning. Guy, a barrister, has been suffering from depression and is involved in the high profile trial of a fraudster, but Clarice wonders if there’s more to it and what is the bad wound on Susie’s leg?

I enjoyed The Man who Vanished and the Dog who Waited. I wasn’t sure what to expect as I haven’t read the first novel, but I was pleasantly surprised by the readability of the novel. It urges the reader to keep turning the pages.

The outcome of the novel is not difficult to guess, but I don’t imagine that many readers read the series purely for the mystery. It is told from Clarice’s point of view so it also covers her friendships, her animals, her career and her marriage. I think that for a cosy it has some valid points to make about interpersonal relationships and delves deeper than most in the genre. I am allergic to most household animals so it’s not a subject that enthuses me and the novel is obviously written by an animal lover as there is a lot about animals. I found the mystery of what happened to Guy engrossing. There are so many possibilities and while, by about two thirds in, I had a good idea of who, the why was a surprise.

I think The Man who Vanished and the Dog who Waited is a good read, but I won’t be reading another. I strongly disliked Clarice’s husband, Rick, and his attitude towards her. He gets angry at some of her actions and seems to think he knows what is best for her, while suiting himself at all turns. Maybe it’s just me, but I saw so many red flags in his behaviour.

This mystery was a little too slow and meandery for my tastes, but it did have its moments.

The story centers on Clarice, who lives in Lincolnshire and runs an animal rescue. I do love animals, and some of the interactions with her various cats and dogs throughout the story were both interesting and adorable. However, I suspect only the most devoted rescuers would be into the super-detailed descriptions of every aspect of how animals are kept, how the cattery is set up and so on.

The mystery gets going when Clarice's friend asks her to keep a boxer belonging to her adult son. The son, Guy, has gone missing from home and apparently the dog is reacting to the tension in the home. Clarice gladly keeps the dog, but also gets drawn into the mystery of Guy's disappearance. The actual mystery and the role of Guy's dog in the whole drama make for good reading, but the story did move quite slowly and the detailed renderings of Clarice's day to day life sometimes pulled me out of the story. For instance, we might get an interesting clue but before we can go further with it, it's time for Clarice to feed a few dozen cats and dogs and we need the details of each feeding. I love my animals dearly, but this was too much detail for me.

If you like your mysteries with lots of side details or if you're able to hang in there through all the detours, then this is a low-key cozy of sorts that you might enjoy.

Clarice runs an animal sanctuary. When she is asked to look after a dog named Susie, who mysteriously has a cut on her leg; it is uncovered that the owner has disappeared.

Being married to a policeman will always have its perks; when you can ask for advice or get in on the investigation. It isn't long before Clarice is playing detective, but how much will she want to uncover?

A fast pace and engaging novel. In some ways predictable but I enjoyed it. It was an easy read and a book I'd pick up for a summer pool read.

And after reading this, I want to get a dog.

This the second book I read in this cosy series and I'm liking them.
I love Clarice and think she's a fleshed out and likable character. The plot is engrossing and entertaining and the characters are well developed.
The mystery is solid, slow burning and full of twists. The solution came as a surprise.
I hope to read soon another book by this author.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

A good read I got this book because of its title. It was true to the title. The sweet writing about husband and wife together was wholesome. I appreciated the lack of graphic sexual scenes. How refreshing! It was a sad story but reflects forgiveness and the bond of motherhood. A page turner. I have or have had several cats and dogs and I liked the animal aspect.

Location- Licolnshire Wolds in England.r.
Clarice runs a small business where she rescues animals and cares for them until they can be put into foster care. She is also a cremamason adn her husband is a police officer.

The son of a dear friend Louise, Gury disappears and the stage is set for a unique mystery. Susie, Guy's dog, becomes an intregal part in yhr story and the mystery.

I didnt know what to expect from this book but I really enjoyed it. It was more mysterious than I expected and i found myself needed to solve what had happened. It was well written with well developed characters that were relatable and likeable and a good story. A good read.

As with the first book drawn in nicely. Love the twist and still not a fan of the husband. Seriously, a little, well you will see when you read. Or maybe you will like him who knows? Looking forward to more by Kate High

I thought I would enjoy this story as it involved an animal lover as the lead character and was also a murder mystery. However it seemed to progress at too slow a pace for me. Ps I didn’t like Clarice’s husband.

This book was hard to get into. The book got interesting three quarters of the way through and the last bit I really enjoyed but the pace was slow to begin with. I didn’t feel the characters very realistic either.

Enjoyable

A great cozy mystery, pleasant characters, credible plot. I particularly enjoy the background details about the animal rescue and ceramics. The author properly captures a particular sort of English life.

Unfortunately this was a disappointment. It felt like writing by numbers with poor characterisation, tenuous plot and littered with clichés. I didn't really buy into any of it and didn't care about any of the characters. Not for me

About this book. The plot was quite dark, and interesting. But there was just tooooooo many cups of tea and weirdly fake cheerfulness alongside it.
