I wanted him from the moment I laid eyes on him and from that point on, the question wasn’t if I’d have him but when…

Thirty-five-year-old Matias de la Vega is good at one thing and one thing only. Though he doesn’t officially carry the title of killer when it comes to his role in an underground vigilante group, he’s got no problem getting his hands dirty if it means getting justice for those who can’t get it on their own.

Such is the case when single dad Sam Wittier is confronted by a stalker bent on murder. While neutralizing the threat is all in a day’s work for Matias, what comes after is anything but. Although Matias isn’t particularly surprised by his attraction to the older Sam, his inability to walk away from the still-grieving widower is a complication.

An unexpected and dangerous complication…

Nothing about the mysterious Matias makes sense to me. The emotionally distant soldier says what he means and takes what he wants. And for whatever reason, what he wants is me. That should have me running for the hills. It should, but it doesn’t…
For forty-eight-year-old Sam Wittier, life is as good as it’s been since he lost the man of his dreams more than two decades earlier. After handing the reins of his successful business over to his older son, Sam is happy to settle into the quiet, simple life of being a full-time single dad to his newly adopted little boy.

Unfortunately, life didn’t get the message. After nearly losing everything to a deranged stalker, Sam finds himself face to face with a man who is anything but quiet and simple. There’s no reason he should want the unpredictable, take-no-prisoners Matias in his life or his bed, but just like life, his body isn’t getting the message.

One night with Sam is all I need to get him out of my head for good. One night will be enough to end my obsession with him. It has to be…
While Sam and Matias share a white-hot chemistry that neither has ever known before, that’s about all they have in common. But as one passionate encounter leads to another and the line between obsession and need begins to blur, will Matias and Sam find that maybe they aren’t so different after all? And what will that mean for the ghosts of the past that have haunted each man for so long?

The ghosts that are willing to be buried as well as the ones that aren’t…

Everyone that knows me, also knows that Sloane Kennedy's "Protectors" series is one of my all-time favorite series....that along with all the other amazing spin-off's she has written. I can't believe this is already the 13th book in the series!!

And I still hope there will be many many more...

many more gif - Google Zoeken

I do want to give some advice to those of you planning to read this book (and you should). I am normally a pretty reckless reader...meaning, I don't care about reading orders and all that, I just do what I want...

i do what i want gif - Google Zoeken

..But when it comes to this series, I do recommend to read all the books in order, and in this case, to also read the novella, Protecting Elliot. If you don't, you might feel like you have jumped into an ongoing story and you could get a bit confused.

Protecting Elliot is about Cruz and Elliot. Cruz is Matias' brother and Elliot is Sam's son. Matias and Sam are the main characters of this story. They meet through a horrific ordeal at the end of novella 9,5 and their story picks right up in this one.

We get a bit of an age gap, which I always think is yummy and there is plenty of hurt/comfort for those graving it... It also wouldn't be a Sloane Kennedy book without the delicious steamy scenes :P

Preconceito 0

As is the case with most of the main characters in this series, both men carry some substantial emotional /psychological baggage. But no worries...they will work it out together in plenty of ways ;)

That said, I am gonna be honest and admit that this one was not my favorite of the series. I think this is mostly because I feel nothing for the "dead spouse" trope. I usually skip these kinds of tropes, but we are talking Sloane Kennedy here and there is no way I was gonna skip this book. So...this one not being my fave..it's a personal issue and I think most won't have that problem and are gonna love everything about it.

Besides, even I can't love them all the same, and I did still enjoy reading it, even though reading, for me in these hard times, is not the same. I find the most comfort in my golden oldies right now and so...

I think it might be time for a "Sloane Kennedy series" re-read ....

Sloane Kennedy excels at writing hurt/comfort and this one is no exception, but I really wish that her alpha males could use their gobs sometimes and just. bloody. TALK. Mathias wore me out at times with his closed up attitude which is getting a bit old now.

Although this wasn't one of my favourites from Sloane's Protectors series, she still delivers on all the things I love in this series.

Hot alpha men fighting their feelings, the importance of family, whether by blood or choice, and just deserts for the bad guys.

Another incredible couple!

Sloane Kennedy, always there to write "these dirty dirty scenes".

This can't be read as an standalone. At least you have to read "Protecting Elliot" first.

So so so.
Matias and his little brother (Cruz) work for Ronan. Matias is stalked by an ex-lover (Bishop) since many years. Bishop used everything he could to get Matias's attention (), even using his little brother Cruz.
The brothers are send in a mission (by Declan Barreti, yeah so many cross-over BUT I love THAT) to protect Elliot. Elliot is the son of Declan's ex-partner (Mac). Declan made a big mistake (It was really big but hey, he really worked for forgiveness) many years ago, it cost a father, a brother and a husband to many people.
Sam is Mac's partner. When Mac died, he just stopped living. He focused on hatred, anger, resentment towards those who participated in the death of his partner while taking care of his sons. Not allowing himself any new relationship, until his path crosses Matias.
Matias is this 35 years old guy, send by Declan to protect Sam and his sons. Between Matias and Sam, the attraction is in the first glance. Sam tried to resist but very quickly these two give in quickly. Unfortunately, this is only the beginning of a long series of complications for this couple, in the end, the HEA.

I love Matias, such a hottie with a big heart, he's my favorite character in this .
I love seeing Cruz and Elliot getting stronger and stronger with the time.
I LOVE SEEING RONAN.

Next book haha. Always there for this big boys.

After re-reading Protecting Elliott, I remembered Matias and Sam and their backstories.

This was a slow burn when it came to the excitement not much happens throughout the story, concentrating more on the relationship.

Obsessed is Matias trying to come to terms with finally having feelings for someone and that someone being Sam.

Sam lost his soulmate decades ago and has given up on love, he has retired to bring up his adopted son Ryan, leaving his business to his eldest son Elliott.

Both men are struggling with the growing feelings they have for each other, they take it out on each other with angry dirty hot sex.

I enjoyed this and catching up with some old friends Ronan, Declan, Jagger and Ren.

I am a huge fan of this series The Protectors, some books are easier than others to read, this being an easy read, for me anyway.

3.5 Liked-it-but-did-not-love-it Stars!! 💕 I do love SK's books with their hurt-comfort brand of stories, but this one was a little hard to love. First, a heads up to prospective readers: it is absolutely essential to read the previous books in the series and especially the novella "Protecting Elliot" which is a prequel to Matias and Sam's book.
Now gripe time😬; I liked Sam more than Matias for sure, but for someone who came from nothing, to have built his own successful business while being a single parent to two sons (one with special needs); Sam seemed a little weak and wimpy🙄. I also get that Matias has had it tough and cannot really let his guard down, but his brusque behavior over and over again towards Sam was a little off-putting😱. Of course insta-lust 💘 is part of SK's appeal but in this instance the chemistry did not feel so effortless. 🤷‍♀️
Nevertheless, the steam, the thrill and the danger level in the story was off the charts so somehow it worked to give us an enjoyable read💕🔥. The final confrontation with the villain did not drag on which was a relief and the epilogue with the HEA tied up some loose ends so that was quite satisfactory too. Overall, I do recommend it to fans of Ms. Kennedy's work, but read it in order, otherwise it won't make sense. 👍👍

It was good but not great.. I think that matias needed to talk more.. or something because all the hot and cold towards sam was annoying.

I do enjoy coming back to this wild group of guys so I am glad I read it but I wished for more.

No part of me wanted to rate this book less than three stars. I waited a long time for it to come out. But I can't justify giving a higher rating.

The book follows Sam and Matias, two characters we were introduced to in a novella called Protecting Elliot (which I'd suggest reading beforehand if you plan to read this one). Basically, what happened is that Matias and his brother were tasked with looking out for Sam's son, who seemed to be in danger. And Matias ended up saving Sam and both his sons from a killer. Matias has felt drawn to Sam since then. He just doesn't know what to do with that feeling. And Sam isn't open to any kind of relationship because of his devotion to his husband, who died twenty-five years ago.

Now, I don't want to put a time-stamp on grief. But how does a person still feel guilt at the thought of being with someone else, when their significant other has been dead for two and a half decades? And there's also the fact that Sam's guilt was very plot-device-y. It was used to create tension in the first third of the novel, and then never mentioned again. I didn't want him to continue to feel like he was betraying his husband, but if you're going to use the trope, at least do it properly.

That, unfortunately, is only the first of my issues with this book. The biggest issue? The stalking. Can we not all—authors and readers—collectively agree that stalking isn't romantic? I don't care if Sam knew about most of it or that he seemed to be okay with it, it's still stalking! Worse, Matias kept breaking into Sam's house! If you could take away the stalking and the complete lack of boundaries, I'd really like Matias. He has the whole tortured-soul-with-too-many-feelings things going on that I love. But the stalking I can't condone. At all. And before I'm tempted to rant about that some more, let's move on to the next issue.

Sam and Matias have no chemistry. I mean, sexually, they great. But there's barely any time spared for an emotional connection. Aside from that one conversation the two have on a picnic table in Sam's backyard, the relationship is mostly physical. The plot moves from sex to a poorly developed villain. And that's not even the worst part. The worst part is that there was a chance to repair the lack of emotional connection.

You see, about two-thirds of the way in, Matias and Sam went on multiple dates. We were told they were cute dates with laughter and smiles and lighthearted conversation. But did we get to read about any of them? No! Like, I'm not saying that you have to spend fifty pages on cutesy dates, but at least us one!

I can't tell you how pissed off I was that the author skipped what could have been the best part of the novel. It would've made up for the incredibly stupid thing Sam did right before (though not the stalking), and it would've sold the romance. But it didn't happen. All for the sake of a crappy villain with a flimsy motivation. Who the book didn't even need, because almost everything could've been accomplished another way. Sure, we wouldn't have gotten the dates. But we didn't get those anyway!

And with that, we can officially consider this book the biggest disappointment of the year so far. And after Foreseen: Lex was so good, too... *sigh* Maybe it's time for this series to end.

One of my favorite series ! Sloane Kennedy is an automatic click for me.
Here we have book 13, Obsessed, showing us
Colombian born Matias, 30s, a moody ex-military man

and now a security expert with Ronan's company. His brother, Cruz, who he raised, is the partner of Elliot, who is Sam's son.
Sam, 40s, has salt-n-pepper hair,

and a 9 yr. old son, Ryan, he adopted with Cerebral Palsy.
Ryan can speak through his computer board, and Sam gives him a great life with opportunities.
There is a deep story line here, and the events are all intertwined with the past. A bad guy from the team Matias was with in the military, comes to upset and taunt those people that he cares for.

In the opening, hostage situation, Matias takes over and stops it. Everyone is shook up, and Matias overseas the protection of Sam's home and family. The men share some intense looks, but Sam still wears his wedding ring from his long deceased husband. After a misunderstanding, Matias and Sam begin a physical sexual relationship, which later turns into much more.

They are super hot and a scorching inferno of sexy times.

Each man has major sadness in his past, and they share those intense histories with each other, which draws them even closer, and makes us like them even more. The bad guy torturing Matias to keep him off balance is threatening anyone that Matias holds dear, and now that includes Sam, and Ryan, plus his brother Cruz and partner Elliot.

Emotions are deeply intense, and gradually the men realize it is love.

Of course there is danger, more hostages, a rescue and lots of action. Sam comes through with big actions, and shows us he's not a timid guy. The two men are a great match.

A fantastic tale for this PROTECTOR series.
Highly recommended.
E N J O Y !

This was a good book. It wasn't my favourite of the series but it was well written and had great pacing.

What I couldn't get was how Sam was seemingly okay with Matais' erratic behaviour especially the coming and going. Yes, it was obvious Matais wasn't a bad person but even reading it, it annoyed me to no end. But I guess to each his own right? *shrugs*

SO yeah, I liked this and might even do a series re-read when the mood strikes.

3.5 for this addition to the series ... I wanted to like this more but I was frustrated by Sam & Matias’ behavior.. on, off, hot, cool, rational, irrational. Yup, I guess it goes with the book title but I just found it a little stilted.

Alright, despite the annoyances I noted below, I did enjoy this novel.

Enough to actually sign up for the author's newsletter to read the FINAL scene where Sam and Matias' roles get reversed... ahem, if you get my drift. 😛

Damn SK for making me sign up just to read it tho. I was about to hurl my Kindle across the room when I got to the end and all the teasing of Matias FINALLY getting on bottom was all for nothing. Yeah, I'm kinda obsessed with alphas making themselves vulnerable that way for the person they love. I love it.

Matias is definitely the reason I read this book. Sam... meh, he's OK I guess. But I'll give this book 5 stars for Matias, 3 for Sam, so avg. 4.

And, REALLY NOT A FAN OF THE COVER. It looks like neither person. Matias is BIG. Sam is OLD (late 40s early 50s) with a MUSTACHE.

3 stars only. Sex with a little storyline chucked in. Matias was a closed-off misery and Sam was a sex-starved oldie. One of these days I'll stop buying this author's work cos we do seem to be on a rinse and repeat cycle with some of these stories, but then amazingly she throws everyone a curved ball and actually produces something good with a teeny tiny little bit of sex added. SO frustrating.

A good addition to the series.
Loved both heroes. They were so different but still complimented each other beautifully.
I’m so so glad that Sam found happiness again. His past tragedy was like a thorn in my heart since reading Declan’s story.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would.
This book is sooo great. I love everything about it. Matias's character is so strong and tough but with a sensitive side that he keeps hidden. Sam is the sensitive one who like to take control when you least expect it. Together, their sparks fly, the sex is explosive but neither will admit what they really want, and there's danger in the midst.
So hot, so tender, so dangerous, so Beautiful!

In this thirteenth book in the series, we have all the ingredients that make it stand head and shoulders with the rest of the books. We’ve got two great characters in Sam and Matias, who have a whole host of problems to deal with before they can find any kind of happy ever after. As we’re used to in this series, this booked pulled no punches and took us on the trademark emotional rollercoaster of a ride that the author is so skilled at taking us on. There’s so much I enjoyed about this instalment, I loved the age gap between Matias and Sam, the push and pull between as they both tried to hold back and deny their feelings due to the heavy baggage they were both carrying. But they didn’t count on being everything that the other needed, badly. Of course, there’s not just said baggage to deal with, there’s a current threat from Matias’s past that threatens both their worlds. Matias, along with one of my most loved and cherished characters of Sloane’s, Ronan Grisham, have to find a way to neutralise the threat and it’s right here where we get the goods from the author in a nail biting finale that has you on the edge of your seat. This was a fantastic read and I’m so happy to be right back in the thick of it in the Protectors world.

The intensity of the characters and scenes obliterated any objections I might have to the plot.

Intensity and Consistency are my goddesses regarding fiction readings. If this author's plots can sometimes be weak or a bit implausible, I find no major inconsistencies in them. And the intensity that she achieves in her characters and scenes is off the charts; That is what makes me an unapologetic follower of her MM stories, and the reason why Sloane Kennedy is an auto-buy author for me.

Sloane Kennedy knows how to make you feel the whole gamut of emotions. “When I’m around him, I feel like I can finally take a deep breath.” Sam and Matias had to fight hard, for themselves and for each other, but what a powerful and heartfelt battle it was. My heart hurt for their pain, especially when they hurt each other, but oh the moment when they found their happiness and their place... Well it was like the moment when a rainbow peeks out on a cloudy day, uplifting and beautiful.

"Ich will dich nicht lieben!" denken sowohl Matias, als auch Sam. Und doch können sie nicht voneinander lassen.

Die Story ist echt klasse - wäre sie sogar ohne die Krimi-Plot, der aber bei den "Protectors" einfach dazu gehört.

This is a typical story in this series, but I didn't quite love Matias in Sam. I think some of my hesitation in the already established relationship between Matias' brother and Sam's son. It made them sneaking around a little, I don't know sleazier some how. Even though sleazy isn't really the word I want. On top of that I really disliked how easily Sam always caved whenever Matias showed back up and skulked around his backyard without requiring Matias to open up about anything. That being said Matias' fear was justifiable, I just felt like his silence was pushed a little too far.

I did like Sam's take charge attitude when it all came out though. I liked that he wanted things over and done with and had Matias over a barrel. I also liked that this story had Sam facing the pain of his past and the lost of his first husband to horrible circumstances. It pushed him to healing those wounds even with those who weren't entirely in the right in the past.

Not my favorite of the protectors series but still good!
Sloane Kennedy knows the hurt/comfort trope.
Bit of advise, read Protecting Elliot before this one if you haven't or you will start the book thinking you missed something...

3.5 stars - I’ve been a huge fan of this series, but sadly, this installment was mostly a sexfest with a side of story. Perhaps this series should have ended a number of books ago, as they did start to all have the same theme with some interesting tidbits here and there and they all have characters tied in one form or another to the previous stories. You would definitely benefit from reading them in order. One of the highlights is getting to see the previous characters.

Here, we have a lovely May/December story, and it is an easy read, previous complaints aside. You have the typical guy wants just one night to get it out of his system, which we all know, never works out that way in the book world. They definitely have the chemistry, and it plays out quite a bit throughout. There is also lack of communication being a major issue added to the mix. Things wrap up nicely and there is a satisfying epilogue.

I definitely recommend this series, but this installment didn’t wow me.

I enjoyed this, as I do all of this series, but I think it could have been even better.
I loved what was there, but too much of it was spent in the same heavy brooding mood - some more variety would have really spiced this up for me. There could have been a lot more interaction with other characters than just our MCs, there was enough opportunity even for a lot of lighter scenes with Ryan, Elliot or Cruz, which I kind of missed. Even those dates they went on - why didn't we get to enjoy some of those happy moments?
Some of it is Matias fault because he hardly knows how to be happy, and I loved him for it, but exactly that would have made a moment like that so very special.
Anyway, the big bad work family, the confrontation with Declan, the communication fails, all that hit just the right spot as usual.
I might even start another rereadathon of the series, since I couldn't fully recall all of the names and details anymore...but it's not necessary to follow this book.

This is another very enjoyable book in The Protectors series, which ties in nicely to several other books in the series and features some of the MCs from other books. In this story, Sam is the father of Elliot, a previous MC, and a also younger, recently adopted special needs boy. He's recently walked into a situation in which both of his children were endangered and held at gun-point. Saved by Matias, brother of Elliot's boyfriend, the family is recovering and healing.

Something about Sam has captured Matias's attention for the first time in his life. There is an immediate attraction, but Matias doesn't want or know how to proceed in something that seems potentially serious. Instead, he stalks Sam's backyard for a few weeks, feeling almost obsessed, but also more calm that he's felt in a long time. As they begin to spend actual time together, their attraction feels magnetic and very passionate. Both men have abused and grief in their pasts. Also, danger lurks in their present lives. This book has action, family and friends, and a beautiful, healing love.

Two men hurting for different reasons, but hurting really bad. One from guilt and anger, the other from a broken heart!

Matias has been agonizing with guilt and rage ever since his teammates nearly killed his brother two years ago. He has been hunting the one who got away ever since.

Sam can never forgive those who left his life partner alone during the time he needed them to back him up.

Meeting each other will bring forth deep feelings, self-doubt, but also forgiveness and a lot of love. This amazing story will make you cry, curse, swoon and fall in love with Matias and Sam. It made my heart go through the wringer too many times. It also made me fall in love more with this series.

Thank you Ms. Sloane Kennedy, this addition to the series has been worth waiting for, let the countdown begin for The Protectors book 14!
