IS VENGEANCE ACCEPTABLE TO SAVE THE WOMAN YOU LOVE?
Former Delta Force operator and founder of Hellforce Security, Henry “King” Clark has all but given up on finding a woman to spend his life with. The Army was his passion. Delta was his lady. Hellforce is his love. King loves deep, fights hard, has true convictions, and lives by an ingrained set of principles — always justice, never vengeance. Little did he know, he’d be tempted to betray those convictions to defend a good woman and win her love.
IS THERE ANYONE WHO CAN SAVE HER FROM HELL?
Believing true love existed only in fairy tales, Mary Payton Jones is stuck in the mundane routine of life. She works two jobs, looks after her mother with early-onset dementia, and supports her abusive, lowlife older brother who has never grown up. Mary grabs at the chance of a better life working as a personal assistant for Hellforce’s founder — a strong, protective soldier who seems to have walked straight out of Mary’s wildest fantasies. Fantasies that are shattered when a home invasion leaves her hurt and unconscious at the scene. Mary can only hope that justice will find whoever is responsible.
On the hunt, John “Tex” Keegan helps Hellforce track down Mary’s stolen family heirlooms and those responsible for her plight. When justice served goes terribly wrong, King will be faced with the truths of his decisions. Will Mary forgive him or is he destined for a life alone?
Rescuing Mary is a full-length novel and the first book of the Hellforce series. It takes twists and turns that will have you at the end of your seat but will leave no cliffhanger ending.
Defenders of the abused. Protectors of the innocent. Guardians of the exploited. King and five former Delta teammates make up the security team that is Hellforce. They’ll delve into the bowels of hell to bring home those lost to the deep underworld.
FMC 30yo Virgin Mary is shy, dumb as a brick, and self deprecating to the point of nausea. It’s written as cliche as it sounds. The whole “I’m so plain” inner thoughts on repeat are paired against everyone else noticing how hot she is.
So many scenes are eye-roll worthy. At 30, why is it so shocking that you can’t fit three fingers inside yourself while getting yourself off? Or, you need your check deposited ASAP because your home is about to be foreclosed on and lights turned off … yet, you forget that your paycheck is on the table for SEVEN DAYS. Uhm, broke mofos don’t forget about their checks…much less for a week.
^^ That kind of SAF plot holes, plot mishaps are abundant. The team brags about never using Monikers in front of targets, but the scene they’re in shows them using the FMC’s name with the target (her brother) in the room.
Insta love like lightening. I’d go with it, but it’s frayed with too much stupid. Who sexts with a new boss at a job they desperately NEED and after totally screwing up the interview? Reader is told about a couple evenings getting to know each other OFF scene. Yea, that don’t work with insta love after a couple of brief interactions. Never felt a single connection here… I’m just repeatedly told it’s there.
MMC is an arrogant, hotheaded fucktwat. King isn’t an alpha. He’s an alfalfa, meaning he’s just a controlling dude intent on having shit his way because his way is best for him. Example: She wants to go check her makeup. He refuses to allow her to get up because he says she’s beautiful and don’t need to go to the bathroom unless she has to go number one or two. <<< So, yeah, he sucks. Add that he’s reckless, disorganized, and an asshat to his team, and he sure doesn’t sound like a military badass. Occasionally, he spews some poetic waxing to soften his character.
The plot and romance presentation is so dull and dry. What tries to be saucy ends up failing.
So much useless info. I’m drowning.
King had to restrain himself from peeling out from the curbside in front of Ember’s house and laying rubber down to get to Hellforce. He eased his way away from the curb, knowing Mary was watching him from the window. He eased the gas pedal with moderate pressure until he turned the corner, then smashed it down, racing balls out to Hellforce HQ.
^ What could be said in one sentence takes an entire paragraph. Wordy isn’t in this.
Voice sucks ass….
The narration here is so hard to follow. It jumps across all the character’s thoughts to leave you reading and re-reading for clarity as to which character is thinking, saying, telling what. You have a character in one place thinking internal dialogue… a paragraph later, you have the internal dialogue of a different character in an entirely different location. Makes my head hurt.
The language is often laughable - “deets,” “sugar,” “laters,” etc. I feel like Melrose Place attacked Gone with the Wind during a military raid.
MY GAWD at the damn ‘torture’ scene. I’ve never seen such a long-winded slice of shit. On and on it went with no purpose, and how much can the MMC brag on himself? How many threats can he make? It’s like a bag of hot air from a stink bomb deflating all over the pages. Forget the targets being tortured… this was pure reader torture. BUT….
Then, the unexpected happens. Balls to the floor (no pun intended) mouth agape surprise. Now, I can’t say I feel bad per se for what happens, but kudos to the author for surprising the hell out of me. BUT….
It quickly returns to a shit show of blustering tell, not show.
Why? Why must we suffer through pages of the FMC sitting around thinking about her intuition (eyeroll) that something is wrong with her soulmate….a soulmate she’s known all of a week and doesn’t even know his address. Why?
Zzzzzzzzzzz…….again.
Uhm, the sex scene. I’ve read a lot of them, but this is the longest (again no pun) sex scene I’ve ever damn read. From 78% to 87%…. Is the first sex scene. Here’s how I feel. I love chocolate ice cream, but when you float it off with a gallon of chocolate syrup, a pound of chocolate chips, 50k gummy bears, a pint of whipped cream, a jar of cherries, and 100k nuts…. You’ve ruined what should be a treat with overkill. Just sayin ~
A bit of end action, but it’s so unbelievable that it doesn’t revive the dying book. Petty criminals somehow circumvent a security expert’s home and best an armed ex-military babysitter? Absolutely nothing is mentioned about the team shooting the bad guys in front of the cops. Seems like the entire scene is an afterthought to the plot.
Speaking of hanging threads… the gang/ cartel threat is just left unaddressed. How the petty criminals made the connection between Mary and the team is left unaddressed. MMC’s sperm count issue left unresolved. The cop with it out for the MMC flatlines.
Bottom Line:
So much potential, but nothing ever pans out. The most interesting part of the book is the sibling abuse, and it just wasn’t written in an engaging way. Shame because it’s a subject not many books cover. Characters are flat. Storyline falls apart. Writing is over tell with heavy emphasis on tell, not show, and hovering narration showing all POVS is spastic and confusing. Loose ends and plot holes. Insta love without ever cementing a connection. 1-star reading with one great moment that ultimately flops.
Justice for Mary is by Rayne Lewis. This book is great and really good for late night reading. However, it may keep you up. Mary is at her wits end. She is working as a waitress, working at the shelter for women, visits her Mother daily, and tries to keep up with the house and her older lazy, brother. Trent feels like everyone owes him to take care of him. His parents spoiled him, especially her Mother. Lately, he had really changed and was getting violent with her. Then, the unexpected happens and she quits her waitressing job. She had enough being manhandled. Now, she finds herself going from interview to interview. Before her last interview for the day, she stops in a little coffee shop for some coffee and chocolate. The owner talks to her gives her some advice. Stand up for herself. She goes in to be interviewed by King (Henry Charles) at Hellforce Security. The interview goes terribly but at the end, she tells him like it is. Fortunately, he likes what she says and hires her. When she gets home, she is still thrilled and doesn’t look closely a she goes. The next thing she finds herself in the hospital with King beside her. King was an ex-Delta and he and T had built Hellforce Security after being discharged due to medical problems. Although the company has grow, he has not hired someone to do the paperwork and it is getting out of control. The other men working for him persuade him to hire someone. When he sees Mary, he is immediately attracted to her. Can he ignore the attraction he feels towards Mary?
I'm not sure where I ran across Justice for Mary but wowza am I ever glad I did! Rayne Lewis is a new to me author but you can rest assured that this book won't be the last of hers I'll read. Justice for Mary is intense, dramatic, and suspenseful with edge of your seat action. Plus there's a fabulous love story that practically sizzles off the pages. The Hellforce Security team is intriguing and I look forward to each and every story. You know they're going to be good with names like; Arctic, Trip, Cy, T-BAR and Slate.
Henry "King" Clark and Mary Jones are an unlikely duo. He's the irascible co-owner of Hellforce. A mountain of a man who's decisive, fearless, loyal and courageous. Mary works two jobs, supports her lazy unemployed brother and her mother is in a care home with dementia. She's been downtrodden for so long that she's overwhelmed, lacking in self confidence and exhausted from trying to make ends meet. A serendipitous encounter leads to a job offer for her from King but not before she almost dies from embarrassment when she realizes that he observed her emotional outburst. He know she's the "one" almost immediately. Mary know too but doesn't dare to hope that she could find happiness with King. Protecting her becomes an obsession after she injured in a home robbery.
This is the first book in the author's Hellforce Series and totally worth more than 5 stars. I've already pre-ordered the next book in the series. This is a pedal to the floor non stop action from the beginning to the end of book.
Mary is working 2 jobs trying to keep her mom in a memory care plus hold onto the house while her brother plays video games and hangs with the wrong crowd. (Personally I would've kicked him to the curb but I do understand how family loyalty goes) so when she applies for being a personal assistant to Henry "King" Clark and is hired. When she's a no show on the first day King knows something isn't right as his spidey sense is going off. They find her injured and the house ransacked it will take everyone with Hellforce to find out the why, who and how to take these people down. When both King and Mary realize the who part of the attack they will have to find their way beyond a loss and severe injury to a team member.
Did you ever start a book and just know the series is going to be in your reread pile? Hellforce Security is in this group for me, so much so that I preordered the next book before I finished this one! I loved how we got just enough of all the guys personalities to whet our appetite for more. They're playful, sarcastic, funny, deadly, serious and competent, whatever the situation calls for. Mary and King were the perfect start of this series, and I can't wait to sew what the next book brings!
I am so hesitate when it's a new writer in my world. But Holy hell, so good. And 😉 having someone named King didn't turn me. So this is King and Mary's book. So yummy. This book is a page Turner. And the storyline kept me want more. This my first Rayne book, I want more.
This was a great book . It was well written and you could feel the angst and love and everything in between . I felt like part of the story and could visualize every word and action and emotion . Can’t wait for Slate and Emmys story.
Wow what a great new series and a new author for me. So much went into this story. You have alpha males and of course the lady to tame the leader. Really enjoyed the pace of the book and the couple along with the crazy team members. Looking forward to Embers book and find out her story. So glad I took a chance on this one well worth it.
She may be a new author but you would never know it. It has everything, suspense romance and a great cast of characters. I loved it and have preordered the next in the series. Excellent job Rayne Lewis 5 stars just isn't enough
Way to go "newbie". Well developed characters, believable action & good plot. My only wish is that you had more books published! I've added you to my fav author list
Well,I feel in love with this book.loved everything about it..A Fantastic read..Bravo to you Rayne...you did yourself good,on this story..It touched my heart.thank you so much...Im ready for the next one..keep this series going,please..Ill buy one everytime.
One of the books that you keep forever and still get a kick from. A must read and guaranteed story to keep you turning pages and losing sleep over. . Brilliant brilliant book. Cannot recommend too highly. Read please you will absolutely get lost in it.
This is a new author to me and she sucked me in from the start! This was a great read with action, drama, some tears and laughter. I will be reading her again. Hope to see some of the other guys get their story. Will be looking forward to more from Rayne.
New author to me but enjoyed the story. Slow build, but when it got the action part, there were no holds barred. Plenty of action, loss, tears and plenty of heat. HEA.
This story had a little bit of everything. If you are looking for a good read pick this book. As this is the first of a series I can’t wait to read the next one.
I'm all for two characters falling for each other quickly. But the speed at which everything takes place in the beginning of this book is difficult to get past. She needs a job, she gets a job, she's falling for her boss, she gets attacked, everyone loves her and wants revenge.... day two.
The author easily could have calmed down the beginning a bit a stretch out the tension between the two leads. Give her a few days getting used to the job. Have her interact with the other characters, and then have her attacked. All the characters seem way to invested in this woman they just met basically a day ago and some of which she has not met.
Very frustrating when you actually like the story line and you can see just how good it could be but the author spends more time describing the beating of her brother verses character and story development.
I'll give the next book a try and hope it's just how she wrote this book and the rushed story doesn't pass on to the rest of the series.
I do like the main character Mary though, I like that while she starts out meek and shy she asserts herself. Kings isn't too bad either as a character everything was just too rushed.
This story sucks you in from the very beginning. Loved King and his team. They are a rag tag group but in the end they are family. Loved each person personality it really balanced the group out. Many funny moments, moments you wanted to cry, and many moments leaving you fanning your face. Mary and king perfectly for one another. They were adorable together. And loved how they flirted and danced around each other. Craziness ensued and it was like unimaginable that they would lose their chance together. Thank god things for better. Loved how the guys took her under their wings and protected and took care of her. Honestly. Can’t wait for ember and slates/Eli’s story!! And now I’m intrigued by T and A’s story who could possibly be a mob heiress. Love the series so far!
Don't get me wrong, parts of this story was great and had me wondering what was going to happen and how was Mary's life was going to unfold. Loved some of the characters, but the story was jumping around so many that I was at time confused and trying to figure out where they belonged and what their part in the story was. One character that was left out towards the end was the Detective that had a major problem with King, I had hoped there would be more of him after the girls were attacked towards the end, but no. Also there was no mention of the injuries that Ember sustained during that break in at King's house. And what King did for revenge for Mary was a little over the top but glad he managed to live after what her brother did to him.
King and his Hellforce Security crew are the best thing to happens to Mary. How she and King first meet is hilarious, but she ends up missing her first day of work because she’s attacked and seriously hurt and then we are introduced to some not so nice people!
This is a great story about the men and women of Hellforce with strong characters and storyline. It’s funny, romantic, suspenseful and dramatic with lots of action and twists and turns. An excellent debut book, and am definitely looking out for book 2.
So, this was good! I could hardly put it down all day. The writing was very descriptive and made me able to picture everything that was happening. I loved the Hellforce team and their camaraderie. King was a wonderful, badass alpha lead! I loved how resilient and strong Mary was. If I get to nitpick I would’ve liked it if King and Mary’s relationship was a bit more solid before all the drama happened. It would’ve made everything a bit more believable. All in all a very nice story and I will be reading the next book in the series for sure!
This book was fairly well-written, but had a lot of unnecessary detail and filler. I found myself skimming through much of the book. Although the characters, and plot were well-developed, if not over-developed, I found the pace and timing to be slow, particularly in regards to the romance. The angst and lack of intimacy became cumbersome, and frustrating. This also contributed to the characters being less likable. Overall, a fair read, but not worth pursuing the next one in this author’s repertoire.
I’m thinking this is a new author or at least new to me. The writing is raw, emotional, and suspenseful. I totally enjoyed all of the characters and can’t wait to read their stories. Mary was a total sweetheart and what these rough around the edges alpha men needed. King was literally brought to his knees by her. I absolutely loved them together. Highly recommend this book.
The story is fast paced, but still conveys all the details, vivid scenes and emotions and captures the attention. The introduction to a new company and team was fun and connecting to Tex is always enjoyable. The romance connection was fast, but worked with the story. The violence was graphic but also confusing with the emotional addition. Enjoyed the story and want to read more about the team and their friends!
This was a good storyline and mostly enjoyable book(I did eye roll and skim certain intimate parts). It is super insta-love, has a 30 year old virgin who the hero seems to think of/treat as young twenty-something when it come to some things, and some information is repeated way too much for me. Also didn't care for random time jumps forward.
Wow what a debut book! It has a great storyline, interesting characters, and it is a 5 star read..I cannot wait to read the next book in the Hellforce series!
Solid 4-star rating; it would be 4.5 if I could give it that. I enjoyed reading this story for a few reasons. First, the romantic pair were not typical. They didn't follow the standard. And by this, I mean Mary rarely acted as I expected, which was a pleasant surprise. But that's not to say that she didn't have the typical moments of "don't worry so much about me, I will be fine".... no matter how many times I read that in a book, I look forward to seeing how they get into trouble because they just jinxed themselves. And Mary did not disappoint. Does that make me pessimistic? And now, moving on to King. Where do I start with him? He contradicted most Alpha males in protector romance books and took it to the next level. And the support/not support of his team was an excellent addition. There were moments when we saw how this team would do in the name of brotherhood, and I can't wait to see how the rest of the team unfolds. My only issue with the book, which is my issue alone and not the author's fault, is the POV in which it was written. I am just not used to how Rayne decided to switch between characters amid the chapters, and it has been quite a bit since I have read a book that way. It took me a little to get used to because I would have to switch on who was projecting their thoughts. However, I adapted quickly and was able to enjoy the story. Overall, incredible story, and I have officially added the remaining books to my library and am excited to read about how to rest of HellForce Security falls in love.
Mary lives with her deadbeat brother and works two jobs. Her mother is in a home because she has early dementia. For the past eighteen months he has been acting weird and beating on her. She goes for an interview at HellForce, a company that provides security. She gets hired but doesn't show up on her first day. Her home was burglarized and she was beaten. King is former Delta but after an IED kills everyone but him and his best friend, they leave and start up HellForce. He needs an administrative assistant and interviews Mary. It's like love at first sight. He is enraged when he finds out what happened to Mary. He promises to get her belongings back. When he finds the culprit, he ends up shot. Neither expected to find the love of their lives but they did and nothing will tear them apart. Ok I hate to say this but this really was a terrible story. The dialogue ran together. I would have to go back and reread to figure out who was talking. That is one of my pet peeves! But I did finish it even though I almost didn't. King talked about his brother but never told what happened to him. Just left you hanging. Sex. Action. Alpha men. A shy woman. So many characters talking at one time. Also this is part of Susan Stoker's Aces Special Forces Operations Alpha world.
Justice for Mary is the first book I’ve read by this author. Although my review contains a lot of negative comments, the story had some good stuff too so I would suggest trying it for yourself to see if you like it.
The attraction between King and Mary is immediate and within days of meeting they’re in love. King’s need for vengeance against Mary’s brother is understandable in one way, but totally OTT in another. The entire scene in the room with the barred door is hard to believe. King is former Delta Force and runs a successful security business, so I cannot imagine that he would make that mistake to allow himself to become so vulnerable.
What man calls his woman “Sugar” or “Sug”? That word grated on my nerves every time King said it. In my experience, it’s usually either elderly ladies or southern women who use that term as an endearment, not a man. There are a couple of cheesy scenes (the first time King and Mary are finally together had me rolling my eyes with their cringe worthy dialogue) but overall, I liked the book okay.
This book is too raw for me. It has so much potential, I'll give you that, but it showed how unexperience the author is.
First, the story told in 3rd person POV, but the focus is not on one character and what goes through their mind. It goes to everybody's mind and sometimes it just confusing on who thought this or that.
Second, there's so much event that retold in the future, but explained something that happened moment ago. Not flashback to years ago, but just like yesterday or so. It was confusing.
Third, many unecessary repetition. MMC thought FMC is the ONE, and keep repeating it in several chapters.
Fourth, incosistency and irrational event. For example: MMC house is layered with many security as strong as Fort Knox. But two stupid and low life thug managed to break into the house without MMC notice?
Fifth, the sex scene is dragging on and on and on and I seriously want to scream "GET ON IT ALREADY".
That said, part of the book made me scream in frustration, but some part of the book I can see the appeal. Overall, need so much improvement.
