Before I give my review, I want to start with I've been a fan of this series for years. YEARS. Every book feels like a ferry ride in which you catch up with old friends and meet new islanders in the process. Unfortunately, this ferry ride was not as a hoped it would be. Allow me to explain:
First time reader?
If you're choosing to start this series with this book, do yourself and this series justice, don't. There are twenty-three previous books, this is a series in progress, you will be lost and confused. Plus, this is an amazing series, that should be appreciated from the very beginning. Don't use this book as an introduction.
Main Characters
This has to be the first couple added to the Gansett legacy in which their connection felt incredibly forced. Their connection lacked the natural chemistry the other characters had. Gigi Gibson is a woman who believes that happily ever after does not exist for her. She said it from the beginning and basically throughout the whole book and held strong to this sentiment. Cooper James had his work cut out for him, and trust me when I say, he literally did ALL the work. This sexy, successful woman reluctance to romance and love was very off putting. She was hot and cold. She's loving and standoffish. Honestly, Gigi is the first heroine on Gansett Island that I seriously wanted to slap. I carried this sentiment throughout the whole book. Well, until 92%. Even their "sexy time" lacked the fire that I know this author can deliver. It was actually a little uncomfortable to read.
Repetitive
Remember when I said there are twenty-three previous books? Having to be constantly reminded of how previous characters met was exhausting. Gigi constantly reminding us how tall the fire chief is, was not endearing, it was annoying. Lizzie and Jared's situation? Also on repeat. For a reader who has been faithfully following this series, I felt the repetition was added fluff in this book. This made it that much harder to connect with the book.
Supportive characters
What saved the book was meeting new characters. The setting of the book is summer coming to an end, and the fall season has romance blossoming on this precious island. Previous main characters are now supportive characters and catching up with them felt like the lifeline I needed to get through this story.
I know not every book in this series can be winners. Especially since the previous book, Blackout After Dark, was epically amazing. The book that followed already had a high bar to meet even before chapter one was started. For me, it just didn't get there. I'm not convinced this ended with a happily ever after, but a happy for now.
Despite me not loving this specific book, I still look forward to the upcoming book.
