Julieanna Hever is a plant based dietician and has listed 10 key points to finally get off the diet roller coaster and have lasting weight loss and improved health, along with 75 recipes. Quite a few of the recipes sound quite tasty, including the Smoky Sweet Potato Mac & Cheese and the Coleslaw Potato Salad. But I have a little bit of an issue with how strict this program is. I understand the point of this book is to make you buckle down and finally make changes, but some of the things in the book strike me as a bit obsessive, and maybe not great for your mental health. For example, the author states to weigh yourself every single morning and track that weight. This doesn’t really account for hormonal changes (especially for women) that can make you retain water, giving an inaccurate result. She also advocates for eating within a time restricted window, ideally 4 to 6 hours. For many people that would mean only eating one meal per day, and I just don’t see how that’s healthy. She also states to not do any exercise while on the program, as exercise will stimulate your appetite. So I can only recommend this book for the recipes, not the program itself.
Thank you to NetGalley & DK for this advanced reader copy. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Sensible approach. I learned a few things. Recipes are a little heavy on cauliflower but sound delicious - especially the sauces. I will definitely make some.
While not all these tenets will work for me (I don’t want to be vegan even temporarily & intermitten fasting doesn’t work for me. I need more than 1 or 2 meals a day) there’s plenty I found super helpful. One of the biggest aha moments for me was when they were talking about satiety. “Of course you will want more” like duh lightbulb moment!
The meal planning and recipes are wonderful. The book is very easy to follow and can be used for successful weight loss. It just wasn’t for me.
The knowledge base chapters had some thought provoking information but also what I would consider some questionable info. If it was in there, I missed it. The calorie intake needs to be less then energy output equation - 10,000 calories of kale & mushrooms is still going to cause you to gain weight.
The recipes were completely plant based. Very interesting recipes but when I have to purchase at least 1 item I probably can't get in my hometown; it really turns me off the recipe.
It just seemed to be another - slap some kale in a recipe and call it healthy. If you are looking to drop serious weight, these recipes would be a radical departure for most people. Probably to radical to stick with.
I received an advance reader copy from Netgalley to help prepare my honest review.
The Choose you Now Diet provides tips, recipes, and motivation to change your diet for the better in order to improve overall well being. This book and diet is not focused on counting calories, but rather, focusing on whole foods and ingredients. There are many helpful tips in this book to allow someone to actually learn what it means to eat healthy and not just count calories. This is a plant based diet, and therefore, will not work for everyone. However, if you are interested in a whole foods, plant based diet, this book will be extremely helpful for your personal journey. The recipes looked interesting and able to be implemented by a novice in the kitchen. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.
A revolutionary approach to permanent weight loss using a plant-based diet. Prefaced by a few chapters of explanation, the book also includes several recipes. This is an excellent resource for people who are genuinely interested in a plant-based diet. Dietary restrictions in my household prevent me from following this lifestyle, but otherwise I would definitely pursue it. The recipes are generally easy to follow with ingredients found in most grocery stores. The explanatory chapters contain good guidelines applicable to anyone seeking lifestyle changes and more mindful eating. #TheChooseYouNowDiet #NetGalley
