She’s ready to give up…

Jessie is a romanceaholic—errr, scratch that—she was a romanceaholic. Fast forward almost two months and the hearts that were shining bright in her eyes when she first landed on Djaromir, have long since dimmed. Rejection is never easy but when it’s multiplied by a few hundred, it’s downright awful.

She’s more than ready pack up her dinged and dented self-confidence, catch a ship back home, and try to rebuild the life she’d naively walked away from. All she must do, is meet one last batch of miners while trying not to get her hopes up. A quick sniff to see if one of the hot miners trigger a whiff of the telltale mating pheromones and she’ll have an answer on whether or not she’s headed back to Missouri.

What could possibly go wrong?

He doesn’t understand the fuss…

Toren is content with his life in Gunninng. He treks under his Warlord’s command, leads hunts with his brethren to gather food, and labors long cycles in solitude on their mining planet with nothing but his pickaxe for company.

The way he sees it, there is no place in his life for a female much less a soft, weak, human one. It’s one of the reasons why he spends as much time as possible working the mines instead of inside the tunnel city. As far as he’s concerned, it’s the perfect way to avoid the complications a human mate—until his Warlord calls him back to Gunninng and he gets a glimpse of what could only be described as pure temptation.

Too bad she’s not for him, right?

Leora is a former snake milker that now enjoys the okayest job of balancing motherhood and writing contemporary romance. *Some with a sci fi twist*

A sucker for dirty talk, both the sexy kind and the type that leads to the discovery of new curse words, Leora catches all the craziness in her head on the cracked screen of her laptop. Squeezed into a small workspace in her Florida garage, this author uses her imagination *and cannabis* to explore the worlds she has created.

Her work has been praised extensively by her mother—who pinky promised to read the sexy parts with her eyes closed—and ignored by the rest of her family. Some critics have made compelling statements about her work such as “foul mouthed woman” and “nothing more than porn”. When asked for a comment regarding those reviews, the author’s answer was, “f$&% yeah!” with an enthusiastic nod and accompanying finger guns shooting in the air.

This book was such a delight. Jessie being a hopeless romantic was a nice change of perspective for this series. Toren was a wonderful, grumpy reclusive grump. He never thought he would find his mate, and to see that happen for him was truly lovely. Once he and Jessie figure out they belong to each other, it was wonderful. They had great chemistry. Really enjoyed and kept going with the series!

An enjoyable sci-fi romance.

This was a silly, heartwarming sci-fi romance with a little danger and drama. The world building was okay, if not especially vibrant. The plot was okay, with a few too many convenient things happening to ratchet up the drama without solid reasons for them, but it was still enjoyable. I was just rolling my eyes every once in a while. The characterization was good, with the hero being sweet and devoted and the heroine being sassy, cheerful and romantic. The development of the romantic relationship was sweet and hot, with a heat level of three or four chili peppers. This novel used the Grumpy One/Sunshine One trope. This whole series also uses the Fated Mates trope and the Mars Needs Women trope, both of which I typically enjoy. Reading this was an enjoyable way to spend the dark early morning hours.

DNF at about halfway in. I couldn't take it anymore. I tried, I really did. This is the one of the most bland romance books I've ever read. Despite the short length, there is just nothing exciting or emotional here. I would have been far more entertained reading the ingredients list of soap.

⭐️ Lighthearted and easygoing writing style.

⭐️ Gal pals in romances is always a plus. Love seeing friendships.

⛔️ No chemistry between Jessie and Toren. None. Could not find a duller pairing. They had no connection to each other and I didn't connect to either of them.

⛔️ Jessie and Toren's relationship...

⛔️ None of the characters had much of a personality. I was indifferent to all of them, including the "quirky" one (which I usually like).

⛔️ The world building was almost non-existent. I get I'm jumping midway into a series with short books but the book description said this can be read as a standalone book. I was expecting... something. The world building could not be more vague if it tried. Zero effort here.

⛔️ Cishet romance books have to stop the sexist shaming of any woman character set up to be the contrast to the protagonist. Everyone has read this before in a romance. This is just plain bad writing. The one character that the "good girl" protagonist and female supporting characters (because the protagonist's gal pals love to join in) hate tends to be a one-dimensional toxic femme fatale type of character that wears too much makeup or likes sex (as if those are negative traits when the protagonist does the same and then these are seen as empowering and sex positive?). It was over the top in this book. The internalized sexism in the cishet romance genre needs to be fixed.

⛔️ This might just be me... stop with the overuse of pop culture references. This is a growing trend in sci-fi romances. They don't make characters "quirky" and they shouldn't be a substitute for a character's personality. These always date a book so badly too. Some of the pop culture references in this book were so vague or from such old stuff that I had to look them up. It was distracting and annoying.

⛔️ This book was desperately in need of an editor. Desperately. I realized when I read books that don't hire editors, I'm basically reading unedited manuscripts that are hastily and shoddily published. I feel like I need to go refresh my eyes with polished writing after reading books that don't hire editors.

⛔️ I was so bored. Just so bored. I couldn't handle it anymore.

Here's to hoping for better books.

Jessie's last resort

Too short and not as much fun as it's previous story but delightful nonetheless. It is like at team games when I was always picked last.

Another satisfying read! These miners are just fantastic. Jessie and Toren are so adorable together.

Also, Tabitha is the absolute WORST.

3.0 🌠

Not much to this one. The book focuses on Jessie and Toren. As is true of all the previous books in this series, the “mating heat” (aka OTT sexcapades) is the prevailing theme. The best part of the story, and what makes it most interesting are the shenanigans of several colorful characters from previous books coupled with the predicament in which Toren and Jessie find themselves—stranded on the killer planet where the Djaromir mines are located. The terrain is fraught with untold dangers, horrendously frigid temperatures and powerful wind storms. Unfortunately, while battling the elements,Toren suffers a potentially life-threatening injury, and he’s losing blood rapidly. The terror that Jessie and Toren feel comes through loud and clear. The suspense continues to build as Toren struggles to find a way to get them back to Djaromir before he loses consciousness.

All told, this book is a decent read and an addition to the series; however, I would love to see less sexcapades and more substantive storylines, as the series continues.
