A PopSugar Best New Book of December
CAN YOU SKIP THE STORYBOOK BEGINNING…
Novelist Juniper Blossom has romance down to a science in her bestselling books. But she’s not about to settle for just any man—a happy ending looks different for everyone, and she needs to find the guy whose idea of forever matches her own. Try telling that to her adorable, meddling grandmothers, though. If she doesn’t find a man soon, they’re going to find one for her. Which is why Juniper has prepared for a trip home to Ever After by fibbing that her sexy, smart, sweet best friend Tomas is her fiancé! He doesn’t believe in love at all, but that doesn’t matter if they’re just pretending…
ON THE WAY TO THE HAPPY ENDING?
Divorce attorney Tomas Rivera is as proud of Juniper’s authorial success as she is, but that doesn’t mean he buys into her books’ premise. His career is proof enough that true love is the real fairy tale—and everyone knows fairy tales aren’t real. But he can never say no to gorgeous Juniper, and an “engagement” might move him one legal brief closer to partner at his old-fashioned firm. Yet playing the part suddenly starts to mean feeling it, especially when a kiss just for show turns up the heat between them. Is happily ever after possible for two people who aren’t on the same page when it comes to love?
Saranna De Wylde has always been fascinated by things better left in the dark. She wrote her first story after watching The Exorcist at a slumber party. Since then, she’s published horror, romance and narrative nonfiction. Like all writers, Saranna has held a variety of jobs, from operations supervisor for an airline, to an assistant for a call girl, to a corrections officer. But like Hemingway said, “Once writing has become your major vice and greatest pleasure, only death can stop it.” So she traded in her cuffs for a full-time keyboard. She loves to hear from her readers.
Saranna writes nonfiction under the name Sara Lunsford. Her memoir about her time as a corrections officer called Sweet Hell on Fire releases Nov 1 from Sourcebooks.
This is an entertaining, well written, friends to lovers, contemporary romance novel. It has likable characters, magic, humor, fairy tale characters, a heartwarming romance, and of course, a happily ever after ending.
This was one of those fluffy, feel good romances. It had all the tropes I adore: fake relationship/engagement, friends-to-lovers, one bed etc. Juniper and Tomas are best friends, but what they think about romance and love are very different.
Juniper is a romance author who is an optimist about love, and is holding out for the real thing. Tomas is a divorce attorney who is cynical, and doesn’t put much stock in love. However, they both have feelings for each other and try to fight it in fear that they’ll ruin their friendship. I love the flashback moments throughout the story (it’s one of my favorite things in childhood friends-to-lovers stories). The tension was great, and you really root for these two to get together-for real. I also thought the fairy godmothers were hilarious. I really enjoyed this story and I’m going to check out the other two books in this Fairy Godmothers, Inc series.
Thank you Kensington Books and NetGalley for an advanced arc of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Thanks to NetGalley for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When the blurb had this much to do with fairytales, I thought it would be adorable. I mean, look at that cover! It is adorable. However, I feel scammed. I am scammed.
Let’s start this by saying that I hate childhood friends to lovers with my entire being. I find the trope to even be harmful, as why would you fall in love with someone you grew up with?? Please, even The Kissing Booth did this better.
All of the characters are flat. Their only personality is built on being horny. All of them. For example, for some reason, the mothers of our couple come to see their kids after hearing about the engagement. Tomas’ mother gives Juniper a family tradition kinda ring. And the moms do not leave the house until they kiss. HuH? Look at me in the eyes and tell me it’s normal. You cant. Because it isn’t normal. WHO THE FUCK DOES THAT.
The plot is nonexistent. All that we read about is two childhood “best friends” getting horny. The character choices are so dumb. The whole “fake dating” trope was super forced. Who the fuck fake dates their childhood best friend for fun? It doesn’t add anything to the plot. It actually removed from it. It could be some kind of slow-burn or something? Not this, at least.
As a reader who feels incomplete even dnfing the worst books in history, I hate myself for reading this. And it did have the smallest smallest potential which was wasted.
My advice to the author is to focus more on character depth and plot, two of the most important elements of a novel, right? The reader’s smallest smile seeing this couple together is not enough to make a story good. After seeing the reviews of the author’s other book, I think she did not pay attention to what the readers think. The books seem to be the same, which raises the question, does the author want to improve?
EDIT: Okay, so, it happens to be so that I finished this novel a few weeks after DNFing it because it feels rude…I realised after reading the last sentence that it really was not necessary. I wasn’t missing out on anything..
Four and a half Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭒ It Happened One Midnight by Saranna DeWylde is a delightful and engaging story about love. It has magic, and meddling fairy godmothers, and a magical small town full of quirky characters and charm.
Juniper Blossom is a romance novelist who believes in happily ever after but has not met her soulmate yet. She wants to wait for the right guy, but her grandmothers (who are also fairy godmothers) have other ideas and want to find her a boyfriend as soon as possible.
Juniper’s best friend is Tomas Rivera, a divorce attorney who has seen the worst of married life and does not believe in soulmates or a happily ever after. He doesn’t believe in love. When his law firm hints that his promotion is contingent on him settling down, he decides a fake engagement with his best friend Juniper will solve both their problems. Tomas agrees to travel to Ever After with Juniper to meet with the grandmothers to show them they are happy together. But, Ever After isn’t the typical small town, and the grandmothers are really fairy godmothers, so
I just loved this magical, whimsical romance. The fairy godmothers are fun and provide a lot of humor in the book. Juniper and Tomas are a very likable couple and although it’s clear from the start that they are made for each other, it takes them both a bit of time to figure it all out. The book never lagged and I enjoyed every word. It Happened One Midnight is just pure fun.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a fun, and magical romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you to Kensington Books for letting me read an ARC of these amazing book by Saranna DeWylde!
“Petunia Blossom had almost reached Peak Fairy Godmother”
“His Juniper was magic that way”
“But there was something special about Ever After”
Sleeping beauty meets Laws of Attraction in a fun , witty and magical romance that involved fairy godmothers trying to do matchmaking for their granddaughter. Full of the best tropes coming for three uncommon grandmothers who love “one bed trope” , “ forced proximity trope” and “destined to be together trope”.
“We all know that’s your favourite trope”
“Forced proximity was her favourite trope to write about”
It felt like an amazing fan fiction with all fuel best friends to lovers with a bit of spice but at the right time but so fluffy and sweet. I was laughing half of the time and the other half I was swooning and smiling over those two main characters who are supposed to come together in a world completely ruled by magic but most of all LOVE. It’s the best book to set you into a winter mood with the right amount of spooky vibes coming from a magical Halloween set … Apart from the main couple … those fairy godmothers … the best fun I’ve had in quite a long time !!!
“Love is the source of all things, my little darling”
“I can’t be dead inside … If I were I wouldn’t feel this with you”
It Happened One Midnight is a best-friends to lovers story with a magical touch. Saranna DeWylde’s third Fairy Godmothers, Inc. book has all the sugar and love-powered magic and mayhem I’ve come to expect from the series, but this is one novel that might have worked better as a novella.
Juniper and Tomas have been best friends since childhood. Everything about how they act screams couple, and they acknowledge they love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together, but they’re not in love. Except with a little help from interfering…well, everybody…Tomas and Juniper start seeing each other in a new light. And once they recognize their mutual attraction it becomes a push-pull between giving into desire and standing firm on what they want. Juniper and Tomas’s problem is they want two different things. Juniper is a romance novelist who believes in love and happily ever after. Tomas is a divorce lawyer who doesn’t believe in true love or the aforementioned happily ever after. He doesn’t want he and Juniper to become like the broken couples he works with every day. Tomas doesn’t want to get married and Juniper does; both are valid. But everyone in their lives is pushing he and Juniper down the aisle; his bosses are even dangling a promotion in front of him if he gets married. The problem with this being a full-length novel is the longer things went on, the more it felt like Tomas was being bullied into love and marriage. Not wanting those things is perfectly valid and the pressure on him was so immense (especially when it came to his job) that it was uncomfortable. Yes, it’s clear he and Juniper are meant to be, and yes, he needed to come around to see all that she is to him, but it isn’t fun to see someone forced into it. The one saving grace was Juniper never pushed him to be other than he was. She was firm on what she believes and stood up for herself, but she also showed Tomas the respect of not invalidating what he believes.
As a couple, Juniper and Tomas work well and are easy to root for. They have good chemistry, their love for one another is clear. They just needed a push to go to the next step – the push being mostly bringing their lustful feelings to the forefront. It’s easy to like Juniper and Tomas, though again, I felt bad for the latter because even the town (not the residents – the town itself) of Ever After seemed to go after him because he doesn’t believe in romantic love. The obstacles are drawn out and got a bit repetitive. However, I liked the main characters and ultimately Juniper and Tomas had a satisfying happily ever after that did feel like it worked for both characters.
It Happened One Midnight is the third Fairy Godmothers, Inc. book and it can easily be read as a standalone. Juniper’s grandmothers, Petunia, Bluebonnet, and Jonquil, are as sugar-fueled and ready to interfere as ever. They’re a bit much for me at times, are a bit heavy-handed with the exposition, and their zaniness is just not my cup of tea, but that’s personal preference. Aside from the town wildlife targeting Tomas, the magical town of Ever After was as adorable as ever. I enjoy DeWylde’s spin on fairytales and it was fun to see all the popular romance tropes appear with characters who know and acknowledge those tropes.
FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
i didn’t love this one, too many tropes that i dislike: fake engagement because of ridiculous expectations, super meddling side-characters, best friends to lovers, she’s a romantic and he is super grumpy about love… but the book was fun, romantic and over the top. exactly what i want from my romance books this year. so maybe it was a win after all
Favorite Quote: "How do you know?" "If it's not Happily Ever After, it's not over." Zuri patted her hand. "A wise fairy godmother once told me that. She also said that happily ever after might not look like I expected it to, but that doesn't make it any less magical."
Review:
The Granddaughter of the GODMOTHER's is coming over to celebrate the Firefly festival with the town along with her sceptical friend. The GODMOTHERs are relentless with their wards so Juniper gets no special treatment and is caught up in the crossfire of their meddling.
Juniper is an author who spins love into her books and her strong supporter is her best friend Tomas who's been her friend for so long that people often take them for couples. But when the meddling grandmas are trying to match her up she spins a lie and tells Tomas and herself are engaged and that's sets the storyline and you get to read the rest of it on 28th December 😉
As all of Saranna's books the characterization is amazing and she puts all her characters to good use!! The plotline though it's a friends to lovers troupe is unique in its own way and the writing style is witty and easy to understand yet has the depth of the language 💙 so to sum it up its an awesome book that's gonna be out during Christmas time wrapped in a humongous bow so get yourself a copy 😉
This is the 3rd book in a series set in the magical small town of Ever After, where three fairy godmothers have a wedding planning business. I loved this book for its lighthearted banter and the descriptions of magic and Ever After. It sounds like such a fun place to live!
The fairy godmothers are interested in happy ever afters for everyone, and they’re meddlers when the HEA of their close friends and relatives is involved.
Juniper and Tomas have been best friends since childhood. The godmothers are Juniper’s grandmothers, and they’ve have been trying to set up the two. If Juniper and Tomas can’t work it out, they’ll find someone else for her. Juniper writes romance novels and specializes in the HEA. Tomas is a divorce lawyer and has seen the bad sides of marriage, and he doesn’t believe in a HEA, as much as he supports Juniper and her writing.
So, the two of them decide to pretend they’re engaged when they go visit Ever After. They start to have real feelings for each other, but Tomas can’t get past his belief that HEAs don’t exist. He can’t see the magic in Ever After either. Can the godmothers save this relationship?
This story was stuffed with all the tropes I love, and I can’t wait for the next book. 5 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This was such a fun and magical romance book! I loved it from start to finish, and the best part .... I didn't realize it was part of a series until I started putting my review post together! Eeeeek! I love a good series! 🧐🤓
Best friends since kids, Juniper and Tomas made a pact that if neither were married by 34, they would marry each other. Both are now 34 and neither are married. The fairy godmothers put the engagement in motion and the story just takes off from there. Soooo cute!
My favorite part about this book was the meddlesome fairy godmothers and the magic world of Ever After! I could stay in this bliss forever! Off to find book 1 and 2!
A special thank you to @netgalley and @kensingtonbooks for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first time reading a book by this author. The Prologue had me wondering if I would like the book or not and I almost put it down right away. I am glad I didnt. I ended up thinking the book at some funny parts, though it was a cheesy romance. Everyone needs to read one of those at some point. It was a nice read.

With the holidays floating around me, I was in the mood for some good romcoms. So, I decided to jump into It Happened One Midnight. Now I absolutely love Saranna's Fairy Godmothers, Inc Series. So, it's pretty safe to assume that I would fall magically in love with this book and the characters within it as well.
In this, you will meet Juniper and Tomas. She is a romance author, living my dream, but she's currently holding out for the love of her life. As to who that actually is? Well, she has no idea but she's a very optimistic person. While that's happening, Tomas is like the Grinch who divorced love. If you guessed he's a divorce attorney - you'd be correct. He's also not the biggest fan of love. So, maybe he's like the Grinch and Squidward being combined into one person.
These two are also best friends and it was quite easy to want them together. Or maybe I was just really stubborn and, in the mood, to do so. It's a problem most people would be okay with. So, when things started to take off, I couldn't help but be really happy for everyone involved. Plus, the fairy godmothers were hilarious and definitely made this book way more enjoyable.
In the end, I devoured the heck out of this. I can't wait for the next book that she writes. Especially if it's another fairy tale kind of romance.
Thank you to Goodreads and the publisher for the chance to read a copy of this book!
I enjoyed the friends to lovers romance at the heart of this book, but the magical elements were much too silly for my taste and I found them extraneous. Why couldn't we just have a friends to lovers, forced proximity romance without ~~quirky~~ fairies and other magical creatures? Actually in a few cases, I found the magic creepy and problematic when it's encouraging desire and sex--after their first encounter in a restaurant bathroom, the heroine even thinks something like "wow, that's so out of character for me" and I think we later find out the food was enchanted with aphrodisiacs. Even if I'm wrong and the point was supposed to be that the heroine has never been so attracted to someone to do something daring, I should NOT be reading a romance novel and wondering if the heroine was magically coerced into performing a sex act.

Juniper Blossom and Tomas Rivera have been best friends since they met at a park at the tender age of six. They are as close as two friends can be. However, they are polar opposites in their beliefs about love: she's a romance novelist who truly believes in HEAs and he is a divorce attorney who has a strong belief in NOT believing. When the meddling of their families becomes annoying and being in a serious relationship becomes a contingency in Tomas' job for him to become a partner, they come up with the good ole fake dating ruse to buy them some peace and get Tomas his dream partnership.
They set off to Ever After, where Juniper's grandmothers live, to attend Juniper's favorite event in the world: the fireflies ceremony held on Halloween. There will be a wedding/masque ball that they will attend as a couple. But Ever After is not a regular town, and the grandmothers are actually Fairy Godmothers. Animals behave in a peculiar way and things happen that make Juniper start to realize that things in her life have always had a touch of magic... but that, to Tomas, is just inadmissible.
The fake dating and the forced proximity soon blur all the lines and deeper hidden feelings emerge. But they are still pretty much at polar opposites when it comes to views about love. Can there be a Happily Ever After for them?
I really wanted to love this book. It had everything I like in the synopsis, but, maybe because it's a third installment in a series, I was a little lost. Like Tomas, too much was expected of me in terms of believing and embracing the characters and plot. Maybe it's not the same for people who read the previous books. It's still a sweet and steamy friends to lovers romance, with the whimsical addition of the meddling fairy godmothers and of magic everywhere, but something was lacking for me.
Also, the whole book is just the two of them in a very loving tug of war about beliefs and Tomas is very firm in his, so is Juniper. I thought that the revelation of the existence of magic in the world and his acceptance of it was just too quick. It could have been done throughout the book.
I might still read the first two because the idea of the town really intrigued me, like a modern day Brigadoon. So if this intrigues you too, maybe read the others first.
It Happened One Midnight is a fun romance with humour, fairy godmothers, magic and family. I do recommend you read this series in order as this is the third and final book in the series. Juniper Blossom is a romance novelist who believes in happily ever after but has not met her soulmate yet, at least she doesn't think she has. She is waiting for Mr. Right, but her grandmothers (i.e. the fairy godmothers in the series title) have other ideas. They want her to hurry up and find that special someone soon. They do have someone in mind, but need Juniper to see it as well. Juniper’s best friend is Tomas Rivera, a divorce attorney who has seen the worst of married life and does not believe in soulmates or a happily ever after. When the partners hint that he would be made a partner if he settles down, he and Juniper begin a fake relationship, and announce that they are engaged. We all know how that will work out, or do we?
This was such a fun story. It has magic, and meddling fairy godmothers, and a magical small town full of quirky characters and charm. Watching Juniper change and grow in each book, I was happy to see her finally get her happily ever after. Both Juniper and Tomas were great characters, both fighting the feelings they had for each other. They had been BFFs for so long, neither one of them wanted to mess with that, but the godmothers had other ideas. I laughed a lot while reading this one, as the godmothers are a hoot. This is a quick read, and I enjoyed this one. It was the fun, light romance I was hoping it would be. It was a great ending to this series.
Okay, I don't remember reading any 'best friends to lovers' story before this book. This book started really well. It was funny and their friendship was so endearing that I didn't want them to get into a romantic relationship, but at the same time, I didn't want them to fall in love with someone else. I really enjoyed the beginning.
I thought the story would get sweeter and more interesting once they go to magical Ever After but sadly it didn't.
In fact, it got a bit dull. I didn't find the fairy Godmothers' conversations interesting or funny (as it was supposed to, I guess). I didn't find that magical place intriguing.
But my main problem was Tomas and Juniper's relationship. As I said their friendship was so endearing but their love has not been handled well. It was too forced. You can't see them fall in love but you see them 'trying' too hard. And the intimate scenes (almost erotic) was off putting, really. It was like, 'Okay, let's have sex.' Or 'Okay, I pleasured you, now it's your turn to pleasure me.' as if getting physical was the main purpose and their emotions had no role to play. And then I stopped feeling anything for them, I lost the connection with the protagonists, which I built in the beginning.
When I started reading, I thought it could be one of my favourite reads this year, but I'm really disappointed.
"Juniper was absolutely convinced the hijinks were about to ensue." This sets the tone for the whole book. Many a hijinks ensue! The Godmothers are at the top of their meddling game with this one.
I literally fell in love with the relationship between Tomas and Juniper from the first chapter. Watching them waver at times and ultimately blossom was complete perfection. This book is a deliciously slow-burn, friends-to-lovers rom-com! The character arcs are so enjoyable and had me laughing out loud at times. The world building isn't as present in this book as the others, but if you've read the whole series, you already know what Ever After feels like so I didn't find that to be an issue for me.
After Men Are Frogs, I wasn't sure the books could get any better, but I was pleasantly proven wrong. The Godmothers are just as silly as ever and all up in Juniper's business, meddling as per usual. I mean, they really did a number on poor Juniper and Tomas with that one bed trope ;)
If you haven't read any of the Fairy Godmothers Inc books, I so recommend you check them out...and if you have, definitely read It Happened One Midnight!
Huge thank you to Kensington Books for the ARC to read, enjoy, and review!
The Fairy Godmothers are back waving their wands to conjure yet another Happily Ever After.
Juniper Blossom a renowned romance novelist who has the ingredients to create a best-selling love story can't seem to match her life with her pages. Secretly she has grown affections for her best friend, Tomas, but he doesn't believe the magic of love. As a divorce attorney, he's seen his fair share of lost love adopting the belief your heart will be broken in the end.
Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo Put them together and what have you got? An adorable novel sprinkled with humor where two people are simply made for each other. Plus, three meddling Fairy Godmothers who serve ice cream for breakfast.
Thank you Kengsington (Zebra) and NetGally for the advance reader copy. #ItHappenedOneMidnight #NetGalley
It Happened One Midnight is a friends to lovers romance with a touch of humor, angst, and magic. Juniper is a successful romance novelist and her best friend since childhood, Tomas, is a divorce lawyer who doesn't believe love, of the romantic variety, is real. Juniper's godmothers/grandmas decide it's time for them to realize that not only is love, magic & happy ever afters are real but to see what everyone else already does -- they are perfect and all of those for each other. Reading along as they both fought and navigated their way through their feelings and fears along the path of just best friends to lovers with a HEA future made for an enjoyable way to pass the time.

Another fun book in this series. Friends-to-lovers is my catnip, so I adored seeing these two fumble their way to their HEA. It was no an easy path, and I think it was that obstacle that irked me at times, but in the end, I ended up liking the underlying meaning of it all. I did like the previous book a bit more, and I think it's because I loved spending time with the residents of Ever After. I didn't feel I got as much quality time with them in this book. Still fun and cute and I enjoyed it nonetheless.
I’ll start my review by saying I have read the previous books in this series, and I enjoyed them, but this one is definitely the best one yet. Juniper and Tomas were just perfect for each other and while this book had plenty of funny moments none were ridiculously stupid, which happened a few times in the previous books. I just loved their honesty and their friendship. It was just the best romance foundation ever. And as much as the last dramatic conflict moments in romance book usually annoy me, this one was fine. Perfectly reasonable and good for the story. Overall, I loved this book. It was the perfect magic infused rom com.
This one is feel good, heart warming holiday read. Juniper and Tomas are best friends but their take on love and happily ever after is totally different. Where Juniper strongly belives in this and portrays this to the world as an author, Tomas is a divorce attorney who has doubts. To keep away her meddling grandmothers to set her up, she comes up with the idea of fake engagement and he can't say no to her and also takes this as an opportunity to come step closer to being a partner at the firm as it is their criteria.
The writing, story and all the characters were great and I loved the fairy godmothers. This story was magical and you have a couple to root for. There were lot of fun elements here. It had me smiling and laughing all the time.
I had not read this series before but won an ARC copy in December (thank you).
I do enjoy the friends to lovers trope, but Tomas was so stubborn I found him unlikable. Juniper Blossom is a romance novelist, his best friend and dedicates all her books to him. When she said she was in love with him, he was an ass. His only redeeming qualities were his tamales and enchiladas.
I loved the Ever After world, the other characters, & the writing style so I am going to look into the first two books of this series. And I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book where her fairy godmothers find their true loves.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this ARC publication for an honest review. It Happened One Midnight Saranna DeWylde Publication: December 28, 2021
This was a super cute, fun modern-day fairytale mixed with best friends who fake a romantic relationship/engagement to get their mothers and (fairy) godmothers off their backs. The couple, Juniper (a romance writer who believes in love and happily ever after) and Tomas, (a divorce lawyer who sees the broken side of relationships and does not believe in love) are both hiding their romantic love from the other. Can the magic of true love win? Read the book and find out!
I do want to note, while the book feels very “Disney-like,” it definitely has its contemporary, adult moments.
This was a cute read about Juniper and Tomas who have been friends since childhood. They make a pact to get married when they turn 34 if they haven't met their one true love. Juniper is a romance author and Tomas is a divorce lawyer. She believes in love but him not so much.
Add magic and three fairy godmothers and the story gets interesting.
ARC provided by Netgalley for an honest review. I enjoyed the first two books in the series. Sadly this third installment didn't live up to the rest of the series. I felt no connection to or real chemistry between the two main characters.
This was a fun read! I enjoyed the characters and I found the magical aspects sprinkled throughout this book to be a delight. It was well written and had a steady pace that kept me engaged.
