A Reason for Hope

Rate this book
For animal lovers and fans of The Art of Racing in the Rain, this heart wrenching yet uplifting novel from the bestselling author of An Unexpected Grace tells of one woman’s journey to healing and love after trauma—through the devotion of an unforgettable yellow Lab named Hope.

On San Julian Island, across Puget Sound from Seattle, Tessa Jordan works as a bookmobile librarian, recommending books and poems to her patrons. In her spare time, she cares for a colony of feral cats. But Tessa’s simple, satisfying life is shockingly upended after she meets Nick Payne, a respected community leader, and he invites her to dinner.

Far from a pleasant first date, Tessa’s evening with Nick leaves her feeling confused and upset. After deep soul-searching, she decides to step forward and accuse him of assault. Her distress grows when local prosecutor Will Armstrong declines to pursue her case, citing lack of evidence. Her main solace is Hope, a courthouse dog, trained to comfort victims through the difficult judicial process. As she lays her head in Tessa’s lap, her gentle brown eyes seem to say, Don’t worry. Everything will be all right.

Will, who is Hope’s primary handler, longs to get justice for Tessa, yet knows how rocky the path will be. It’s Hope who, true to her name, shines a bright ray through the darkness. With Hope by their side, Will and Tessa find surprising strength in each other as they learn just how resilient a heart—whether human or canine—can be.

In the national bestseller, AN UNEXPECTED GRACE, an artist and a golden retriever help each other recover from violence and abuse. In Kristin's most recent story, A REASON FOR HOPE, a Labrador retriever courthouse dog comforts a bookmobile librarian as she fights for justice after a grievous assault.

Kristin lives on an island in Washington with her husband, John, and their beloved Lab, Bridget. Kristin says she'd rather work in her garden than breathe. Her kale grows to looming giants, and her lavender and catmint are sirens calling bees. From her desk she watches ospreys and seals, and every hour a ferry passes by. She and John have just renovated a historic Victorian farmhouse, where the island's first postmistress and sheriff once lived with their seven children.

As a lab mom for the last 25 years, I know well the wonderful personality traits of the breed. So, of course, I had to read A Reason for Hope.
Each dog has its own unique personality and Kreisler does a great job of showing us Hope’s. All the sections that involved her just resonated with me. I found it especially poignant how even dogs have their limit of how much love and understanding they can dish out in a day.
Tessa’s sections are deeply disturbing and could be a trigger for some. I felt so much anger against Nick I was all in for the idea of vigilante justice a la Lorena Bobbit. It’s a hard and disturbing fact how few men are successfully prosecuted for sexual crimes.
My thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Books for an advance copy of this book.

A Reason for Hope is an extraordinary book and also my first read by this author, though now I am wondering why. This is an emotional book, my emotions were all over the place with it.
Hope is an emotional support dog who comforts people when they are in court. She is very good at her job and makes people find hope again.
A young woman who is a librarian lives alone and takes care of feral cats living in the woods next to her house. . She is not afraid by herself at home having all she needs in her cats. Her previous relationship ended two years ago and she's ready for another signing up for online dating.
She hits a match with a man in her town and they have their first date, not looking for anything more than conversation that night the unthinkable happens. She sees signs of it but doesn't remember a thing.
The woman is devastated and at the urging of her friend pursues the matter through court and Hope and her trainer are there for all the way plus her support group is a phenomenal help.
We follow her ups and downs and see her go deep within herself to find courage and healing.
Excellent read! Recommended!

I am a sucker when it comes to dogs. I live with 3 incredibly spoiled canines who seem to rule my world. If I am out and about and see a dog, my heart melts just a little bit. So it is no wonder that I tend to be drawn to books that feature dogs on the cover. If they are a part of the story, that is even better. I just couldn’t resist this book once I saw the cover. It was a heavier story than I expected from the cover but it was so worth it. I am so glad that I gave this book a try.

Tessa works as a librarian driving a bookmobile all over San Juan Island. She is single but open to a relationship so when she meets Nick Payne through a dating website, she meets him for drinks and things seem to go well. They plan to get together again for dinner at his house. She wakes up the next morning having no memory of anything that happened after drinking two glasses of wine. She soon realizes something isn’t right and goes to the police to report a sexual assault. Will is a prosecutor assigned to her case. While he believes her accusation, he isn’t sure that there is enough evidence to win at trial. Will is Hope’s primary handler. Hope is a retriever trained to provide comfort to anyone going through something traumatic at the justice center. Hope has several handlers and stays very busy trying her best to make people feel better.

This was a rather emotional novel. Tessa goes through a lot in this story and it broke my heart that she had to deal with the trauma that she did. I thought that all of the women that were a part of her support group were incredibly strong and I thought that the author did a great job of showing just how much sexual assault can impact the victims. I also thought that the trial was very well done and I could understand how traumatic it would be to pursue justice after an assault.

I would recommend this book to others. It might be a difficult read for some because of the fact that it deals with sexual assault and its aftermath. I would definitely read more of this author’s work in the future.

I received a digital review copy of this book from Kensington Books via NetGalley.

This is an emotional book about a difficult subject. Kristin Von Kreisler handled it well. Tessa, after being drugged and raped, was embarrassed and hesitant to press charges. Hope, the sweet service dog, was instrumental in helping her feel safe in moving forward and healing. This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I look forward to checking out other titles of hers.

This book was very good, but very emotional. I am a huge animal lover and a huge lover of dogs so this book caught my attention when I saw that this book involves a dog. My heart poured out for the victims in this book. I loved Hope.

A book about an adorable dog? Yes, but with so much more than a simple tale about a dog. Kristin von Kreisler’s latest novel features a sweet and very aptly named yellow Labrador, Hope, on the cover, but also delves into the challenging, complex, and sensitive topic of sexual assault. The book deals specifically with the trauma of rape and assault as experienced by the victims, the challenges involved in navigating the judicial system, and the very real possibility of eventual recovery: hope.

Tessa, a dedicated bookmobile librarian, meets a respected member of their fictional Puget Sound island community for coffee and they appear to hit it off, so she accepts an offer of a BBQ at his home with his brother and sister-in-law. After revealing that his brother and his wife can’t attend, Nick, a professor and strong contender in the city council race in their small town, offers Tessa a glass of wine. She remembers drinking half of the second glass, then awakening in Nick’s bed, naked, frightened, and very sore. The incident leaves Tessa feeling confused and ultimately violated when she realizes the reality of what must have happened. Hesitant to report what happened, she waits a couple of days before seeking a medical exam; statistics show that only about a third of victims ever report their assaults to police.

Her delay means that essential evidence cannot be obtained, which leads to Tessa’s frustration with a judicial system that requires hard evidence as proof, and with the prosecutor Will who initially cannot accept the case due to the lack of the needed proof. She finds him cold and heartless, unaware of his inner compassion and sincere wish to see the perpetrator behind bars.

Will, who eventually takes this high-profile case when further evidence becomes available, also serves as primary handler of Hope, a yellow Labrador trained as a support dog. She now serves as a courthouse facility dog, providing instinctual empathy and comfort for anxious, fearful, or traumatized people in stressful situations such as trials, forensic exams, and therapy sessions.

This book may be triggering to those with history of rape, sexual assault, or domestic violence. These events, and those who accuse the victim that she “asked for it” by her behavior or clothing, elicit complex emotions, with self-blame, flashbacks, fearfulness, and nightmares.

I found it triggering for a different reason, having served as on-call emergency department examiner in the late 1980’s for women reporting sexual assault. I often felt inadequate to the task, having received no specific training for this in my generalist Ob-Gyn residency, but the E.D. nurses talked me through the forensic exam and gathering of evidence. I still remember each of the thankfully few cases when the victims were children. Fortunately, sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE) arrived on the scene in the early 1990’s, after the 1992 founding of the International association of Forensic Nurses.

A survivors’ support group becomes a lifeline for Tessa, who discovers that she is not alone and that she was not to blame for what happened. The group facilitator teaches the women that well-meaning advice and “should haves” only foster self-blame, and that their emotions are valid and need acknowledgement. The loss “of trust, hope, security, self-worth, and confidence that life could be good” gives the group of women common ground despite their divergent backgrounds, and Hope’s presence and attentions offer wordless comfort when difficult emotions become overwhelming. The moderator teaches that anger and rage can provide a veneer for other, even more destructive, emotions such as fear, shame, and self-loathing, and how to find the courage to avoid events and actions that trigger those feelings. The group begins as fragile, distraught, vulnerable women who ultimately find inner strength and hope through the camaraderie and shared experiences of the participants, putting them on the road to eventual healing. The lessons learned by the women in the group provide truths that can be helpful even to those who haven’t suffered the trauma of sexual assault.

The book’s title offers both literal and symbolic meaning. Hope, the dog trained to sense emotions and provide solace, offers hope to those feeling unable to cope with their seemingly inescapable situation. And the tale offers symbolic hope to those who feel that their future has been stolen by a violent, degrading act.

4.5 stars (half a point off for neglecting to mention the medical needs after an assault: pregnancy prevention/Plan B; testing and prophylaxis for sexually transmitted infections; follow-up testing for HIV and the dread that can cause — but that’s my obvious bias as an ObGyn), rounded up to 5 for an ending that gives hope to those experiencing any trauma like Tessa’s.

I must start off by writing how much I love and appreciate how the author, Kristin von Kreisler, really researched information regarding sexual assault and shows how it affects their victims. The length of time it must have taken her to interview with so many people such as attorneys, police departments, judges, and the handler of dogs who train these dogs to work with attorney’s clients who are in need of calming is just remarkable to me. Thank you!

The story is really well written. It was very heart wrenching for me, as a reader and as a woman, who was sexually assaulted as a teenager.

I absolutely love the strength that eventually comes through these women who have been traumatized. I love how they have a group where they can relate and learn to trust again with one another. Believe me when I say I understand how hard it is to come forward with your story of being assaulted both physically and mentally. It doesn’t feel like life can ever go forward again.

With the right support comes healing. Without support, healing takes much longer, but it will happen in a way that helps you stand back up. Courageous strength is portrayed in this story. What’s even more important is KNOWING none of this trauma is a women’s fault. Besides having your group’s support, is having a dog who is there specifically to help calm your nerves, fears and tears who is named Hope.

The #MeToo movement is included in this story. It is so incredibly important that we as women come forward together by standing up and speaking up for ourselves. The time in NOW for men to realize they can no longer intimidate and bully themselves over us or onto us anymore!! For if they try or do, then it’s up to us to get them behind bars.

I believe this story is a must read to remind us women that no matter what we endure, we shall prevail and come out even stronger than ever imaginable. Plus surround yourself with the love of animals. They give the most unconditional love we can ever experience. They feel what we think we are hiding.

This is an intense, heart-wrenching, journey of a young woman named Tessa and a beloved pup named Hope.
Tessa meets Hope following a traumatic event in her life that causes insecurity, fear and distrust to the max!
Hope is a trained courthouse dog that has the job of comforting people. She feels a person's anguish and knows when a hug is necessary. Tessa absolutely is in need of Hope and her friends to help her survive this heinous incident

This story created emotions for me that made me uncomfortable at times.
It has triggers for those who have been involved in abuse.
However, it shows strength, compassion and love.
The character of Tessa challenges the system to advocate for her rights and what is right.
She is strong!
I was anxious to learn of the ending of Tessa’s story and therefore it was a very quick, but intriguing book.
I will remember this novel for a long time!

He is a respected member of the community so she feels good about the date. After she has wine she feels kind of woosy so she delines any more. She remembers nothing when she wakes up. She feels sore and believes that she did not consent to sex as Nick implies. She believes that he raped her and after talking to her friend, decides to go to the police. The prosecutor Will Armstrong declines to peruse the case for lack of evidence. Tessa is distraught and finds comfort in Hope the courthouse therapy dog. Will wants to get justice for Tessa and pursues the leads that he has. Great insight into rape victims and the struggles they face in seeking justice.

This is my first book by this author, and I can't wait to read more. The adorable dog on the cover caught my attention first. The dog, Hope, is trained to help people through pain, stress, etc by soothing them with her presence. She lives with Will, a prosecuting attorney who handles a lot of domestic violence cases. When a high profile case lands on his desk, Will tries to assure the victim he will do everything in his power to get justice for what she's been through. Between Will fighting for the victim, and Hope trying to console the victim through this trial, will justice be served?
You will not want to put this down! What a page turner! I'm grateful for an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.

More a 3.5
I thought the characters would be better developed and while the narrative touches all the necessary aspects for this plot to work, I still felt it wasn't as emotionally complex as it should.

The last to arrive, [Tessa] walked into the room dragging a ball and chain of wariness behind her. She felt awkward and out of place, a giraffe unsure how to sip from a cup at a ladies' tea. She would guess that all four women at the round table in the center of the room felt the same way she did.
Certainly, they were all vulnerable because at this table there would be nowhere to hide. As Tessa pulled up a chair to join them, she thought that they also represented variations on a theme of sexual assault; it was their common denominator, along with loss--of trust, hope, security, self-worth, and confidence that life could be good. Loss showed on the women's creased brows and downturned mouths. Tessa understood immediately that she was among her own kind.

description

~~Turns out there are many real life examples of dogs like Hope. One of them is pictured above. More and more counties are implementing emotional support animals for victims and witnesses, and Labrador Retrievers are one of the most commonly used breeds. Kreisler shows us how powerful the affection of a dog can be for someone suffering in her novel.

First two sentences: "Here's your breakfast! Come and get it, sweet kitties!" Tessa called.

My two cents: Kreisler clearly loves dogs, and her admiration for the bond between dogs and humans shows through in this novel. The admiration is warranted. As a nurse, I've seen service dogs lift the spirits of my patients....and the spirits of us hard working nurses as well. We all look forward to Buckeye Paws visits. So the story is grounded in a great story arc. However, the prose is of the Hallmark movie, standard chick-lit variety, which made the story fall a little flat. Several reviewers mention how annoying Tessa, our main character, is. Yes, she can be a bit grating, but she also suffered recent, significant trauma. She deserves a break! I think Kreisler did a great job of showing the multi-faceted aspects of grief after trauma. In the support group, they talk about how they use anger to mask their harder to handle emotions--like fear. They then vent about reactions they get from friends when they reveal they were assaulted. Female friends respond with "What were you thinking jogging that early?" for instance. The support group agrees that responses like that reinforce society's tendency to blame the victim, and make them feel unsupported. I agree, but I also think that those responses are grounded in the same masking of fear. Being an assault victim is every woman's greatest fear, with various ways to attempt to avoid it pounded into us since early adolescence by our families. If a friend can blame the assault on "too early", then she can reassure herself that it couldn't possibly happen to her. She's too cautious. Books like this one get conversations going. The more we talk about it, the more we un-mask our fear, the better we can support each other. Given 3 stars or a rating of "good." Worth a library checkout.

Another good quote: Judge John Plodsker trudged in, carrying a large binder, his black robe protruding over his stomach. There was something of a lethargic hippo about his bearing, and he had coarse features--a bulbous nose, bushy eyebrows, and fat earlobes. He set down his binder, worked his ample bottom into his seat, and leaned back against his chair's black leather headrest. Looming over the courtroom from his elevated bench, he grimaced at the spectators as if the sight of them caused him indigestion.

If you’ve ever wondered if dogs are smarter than humans, Kristin Von Kreisler’s novel, A REASON for HOPE (Kensington) is just for you.

Tessa Jordan lives on San Julian Island, across the Puget Sound from Seattle. She runs a mobile library – “Library on the Go - Driven to Read.” She recommends books and poems to people on her route, particularly once with problems. She broke up with her fiancé two years ago and hasn’t been serious with a man since.

Will Armstrong is an attorney who is an advocate for victims of rape. He’s on a personal crusade to “give the bad guys what they deserve.” He’s teamed up with a Labrador Retriever named Hope from the Washington Facility Dogs, to help victims get through trauma.

Tessa goes on-line and connects with Nicholas Payne, a bigwig in town who is running for City Council. On their second date she goes to his house expecting to meet his brother and wife, but Nick says they’ve cancelled. She’s alone with him – this so-called upstanding member of the community. They share a glass and a half of wine and the worst thing that could happen, happens. She wakes up naked in his bed the next morning with no recollection of what happened. After two days of utter hell, she reports him to the police.

Will believes with Hope's help he can get justice for Tessa, but it won’t be an easy road. Hope takes the lead and helps Tessa find a shining ray through the darkness.

A REASON for HOPE is a powerful novel that will grab you at the beginning and if you’re like me, you won’t stop reading until the last page. Tessa is an amazing woman, who with Hope’s help has the strength to navigate the legal system. It’s a path littered with trash, but with Will and Hope’s assistance, she finds the powerb to carry on to the conclusion.

Reading this novel may produce trigger moments that cause emotional pain and suffering. If you or anyone you know needs help, the National Sexual Assault Hotline is available.

A Reason for Hope
by: Kristin von Kreisler
Kensington Books, Kensington

With a Seattle, Washington setting of San Julian Island, A Reason for Hope is a tender yet powerful story of Tessa's journey from trauma toward emotional healing. Central to the story also is a compassionate and intelligent yellow lab name Hope, a courthouse facility dog trained to support victims. Deputy Prosecutor Will is Hope's handler, and their extraordinary bond is apparent as they work together.
The leading characters are very well developed, allowing readers to connect emotionally with them as they each navigate very difficult circumstances. Tessa is a content and dedicated mobile librarian, as well as caretaker of feral cats. Will's job in the judicial process is demanding and intense. As for Hope, her timing and methods are crucial as she offers comfort at the most critical moments of pain and fear for wounded souls.
Author Kristin von Kreisler's writing is straightforward and honest, as she tackles the difficult subject matter of assault. Handling it in a most professional and compelling manner, she delivers an engaging story that is a page turner. She gives good insight into the fragile and complex feelings of victims, as well opportunities available to help them in moving toward light, life, and love again. Hope is a most endearing dog who will stay in my heart for a long while.

Tessa Jordan is single, takes care of feral cats, and drives a bookmobile. She meets a man, Nick Payne, a respected leader in the community, online, and they meet for coffee. He invites her over to his house Saturday night to meet his brother and his wife. When she goes, she has a glass and a half of wine and wakes up the next morning, not remembering anything. She is naked and huts all over. She leaves and goes home.
The author tells her story, through all that happens after she decides to come forward and press charges against him for rape. Will Armstrong declines to pursue her case, citing lack of evidence, and while she is in his office she meets Hope. Hope, a courthouse dog, trained to comfort victims, and she went and comforted Tessa. Hope also gave her strength and courage, to stand up for herself, and Will decided to take the case.
It wasn't easy going through all she had to go through and endure, but Hope was there every step of the way. Will and Tessa became friends during this time, and when the verdict was read, Will and Tessa saw things differently.
Tessa joined a survivor's group, and it was part of the process of making it through all that she has had to go through. She still finds hope and strength from Hope, and wants to heal and begin to move forward, and you will need to read the book to find out if she is able to. I learned many things from reading this book and think that someone who has been through what Tessa had to go through, could find some healing.

Oh how I love this author. Her books are always wonderful and uplifting. There’s nothing like a good animal story. This one, like the others, checks all of those boxes in addition to addressing some very serious issues. Ms. Von Kreisler is very skilled at handling these subjects and tempering them with sweet, wonderful dogs.
Librarian Tessa enjoys her job and has a comfortable life recommending books and caring for feral cats. When she meets Nick Payne and agrees to his dinner invitation. The aftermath of the disastrous meeting sends her reeling and she turns to Hope, a yellow labrador. Hope is a courthouse dog who is trained to comfort people who pass through its doors. Hope brings not only comfort but strength in the companionship of her handler, Will.
This is both a comforting and a tough read. The date with Nick was tough to read as was the lack of consequences for his actions. People go through this unfortunate situation every day. It’s very sobering. Thank God for dogs like Hope and the people who train and handle them. I appreciated deeply how sensitive and skillfully the subject of sexual assault was handled. Many thanks to the author for her skills and sensitivity.

I am going to start this review stating that I almost passed on this book just because of the cover. I am not a dog person, but I pick this book up because of the synopsis. It made me want to learn more about Tessa and see how Hope could help her get through this tough time in her life. I knew some of what comfort dogs do and I was hopeful that I would learn more.
A Reason for Hope taught me so much. It showed how a woman who was assaulted can show her strength by taking the tough road and going to the police about her assault. I cannot even imagine how difficult that could be and by following Tessa through her judicial journey I felt how difficult it was, all the raw emotions that she felt, and the shame that she turned upon herself. I learned how a comfort dog can make such a huge difference in how a victim can feel. Just having the dog at her feet brought her comfort as she had to tell her story repeatedly. There was a feeling of being protected and loved as the dog cuddled up to the victim at their times of stress and fear.
The assault can be a trigger for some people and I was aware through the entire story that while this is a fiction book there is much truth within the story. I do recommend picking up A Reason for Hope. Get to know Tessa and see her strength shine through with the support of support dog Hope.

A Reason for Hope by Kristin von Kreisler addresses the issue of date rape and its lasting aftereffects. The main character, Tessa Jordan, is a bookmobile librarian who cares for a colony of feral cats. While her life is simple and uncomplicated, she is satisfied with it. However, one day this life is upended when she meets local politician Nick Payne in an online dating site. He invites her to dinner, drugs her, and assaults her. Confused and upset when she realizes what has happened, she at first hesitates reporting the incident, but later decides to pursue it and contacts local prosecutor Will Armstrong. After investigating her case, Armstrong decides that he does not have enough evidence to pursue the case. Tessa's main source of comfort becomes Hope, an emotional support Labrador Retriever who belongs to Will and works with victims of crime and abuse. Will wants to get help for Tessa and when another woman accuses Nick Payne of assault, he has the proof that he needs to reopen Tessa's case. While the story line is interesting in parts, on the whole, I found the book to be a bit too simplistic at times for my taste. I did enjoy the parts about Hope and the support that dogs can offer to people who are suffering. I am sure that many people will love this book and I recommend that you give it a try.

Domestic violence of any kind is a difficult subject. Kristin Von Kreisler handled it very well, depicting the agony and depression an assault survivor deals with after the traumatic experience of date rape. Tessa is embarrassed, having been drugged and not knowing what actually happened. Was it her fault? Will, the prosecutor, has a personal reason to throw the book at all the evil men who take advantage of innocent women. But he has to have enough evidence to bring charges against someone, especially a high-profile member of society. This is an excellent story revealing the struggles of the survivor and the prosecutor who wants nothing more than to put the man away for a very long time. The author gives us insights how survivors deal with triggers, the support received through an assault survivors’ group, and the unconditional love of a therapy dog, Hope, trained to give emotional support to survivors of domestic violence.

Even though the book deals with a difficult subject, the author brings to life the human feelings survivors deal with in an effort to move on. And she brings a breath of fresh air with Hope’s personality! I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Books for an eARC for an honest review.

Kudos to Kristin von Kreisler for taking a difficult subject and handling this well.

Tessa Jordan (a bookmobile librarian) is drugged and raped, is embarrassed and hesitant to press charges, and at the beginning in denial of the events that take place. We are shown the emotions and difficulties that victims come to face when such events take place.

Will Armstrong, the prosecutor, takes on the case, but due to lack of evidence in Tessa's rape, is unable to take the case further until hard evidence comes up. And in this story of courage, while Tessa rages on, angry at this, we see that Will does care deeply for the survivors.

Lastly, we have adorable Hope, the lovely emotional support dog. Will, is her primary carer and has an adorable relationship with him, but the moment she has her vest on, she knows her duties and job. Hope consoles victims in their hardest and vulnerable times, giving people the comfort and warmth they need, just by simply being there.

This story is about survival and the aftermath that comes with the effort to move on, varying from the looks of people to their own emotions that they can either allow to rule them or not.

I look forward to more books by this author.

A moving look at the consequences of sexual abuse. Tessa decides to try a dating app and meets a man, who is well known in the community, for coffee. After what was supposed to be an evening with others at his home, she awakens the next morning disoriented and fearing that she had been drugged and raped. When she reports this to the police, she learns the process that rape victims go through. Hope, a trained support dog helps victims who are suffering, able to offer what can’t always be available from another person. Will Armstrong, the county prosecutor, is one of Hope’s handlers and is aware of how much her support means to victims. Working with the detective assigned to the prosecutors’ office, another victim comes forward. Will they now have enough to arrest him and proceed with the case? The range of emotions that Tessa goes through is heart wrenching, but with Hope’s constant support and empathy, she will find the strength to pursue the case to get justice for her and for all victims. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

I enjoy how in each book written by von Kreisler, her descriptive language in a scene makes me feel more immersed in the book… “the April sunshine dappling the forest floor”...”her desk with legs that curved out like a slew-footed tiger’s”...
A Reason for Hope features Hope, a yellow labrador and trained courthouse therapy dog that has the job of comforting people. This canine feels a person's anguish and knows when a paw hug is needed. Hope lives with Will, the county’s prosecutor and he vows to fight for justice.
The main character, Tessa, is a bookmobile librarian and caretaker of feral cats. Tessa meets a man through a dating website/app which leads to an assault. Will justice be served? Will Will's work be validated? Will Tessa trust again? How does Hope help and ease the anxiety of victims of this situation?
The author’s very thorough research for this book is evident with this hard subject of sexual abuse, the court system and finding trust again.

Kudos to the author, Ms. von Kreisler, for taking a difficult subject and handling it with grace, empathy and compassion. Tessa’s ordeal was described without the use of graphic details, but the pain and emotional despair came through clearly.

Will, the prosecutor, was also well portrayed. Yes, he needed enough evidence to get a conviction, but he also clearly cared deeply for the survivors. The interaction between him and the survivors is also a very accurate portrayal.

We can’t forget Hope, the lovely emotional support dog that got these ladies through the aftermath. Too many people these days try to pass off their pets as emotional support animals to bypass rules, but Hope is the real thing. A dog trained so well that she can sense a person’s emotions and provide comfort is a beautiful thing.

I experienced many emotions throughout reading this book, with no regrets. Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.

I have begun to enjoy stories in which animals, specifically dogs, make a difference in a person’s life. This book does this very well. There are moments that are difficult to read, i.e., a date rape. Tessa has to deal with not only the trauma of sexual assault but the emotional distress of the court case. Hope is exactly what is needed for victims of rape as she provides the support Tessa needs to fight for justice. This is an emotional story of how a furry friend can supply the unconditional love and strength to find a way through such a dark moment and guide you to a sense of hope.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

A story that touches on the heinous crime of rape and sexual assault. The victims trauma, the fight for prosecution, and the inevitable invasion of a victims life and future. Hope is a comfort dog, trained for helping calm victim’s in distress.
Will is Hope’s handler, he is a prosecutor in the Sexual Assaults division.
Will unwittingly forms a tenuous bond with Tessa, a victim of rape. It ebbs and flows through the painful process of the trial, and after the verdict against her assaulter, they form a friendship that turns to something more.

This book makes you angry, want to cry and wish for a dog like Hope.
The ending is very satisfying.

#FirstRead ~ For a year, Will had imagined Hope lounging at his feet under his office desk between her appointments.

I loved this book so much. From the irresistible cover to the story contained inside, it was sheer love. You can tell that the writer lived and loved this story while writing it because it was evident in the attention to detail and the building of the characters and plot. It was all done so beautifully and seamlessly. It captures the love that dogs give and the power they yield. It was a story that was deeper than the cute cover and really touches on so many themes that the reader can relate to. A must read story to escape into!!!

I love Hope, a beautiful, passionate dog, courthouse dog, trained to comfort victims through the difficult judicial process.
Tessa works as a bookmobile librarian who cares about her patrons.

Having broken off her engagement two years ago, she decides it is time to start dating. Her first date is with Nick, a respected community leader. After one date, he invites her to his home where he drugs and rapes her. After much soul searching Tessa decides to step forward and accuse him of assault. At first prosecutor, Will declines, but when two other women come forward of being raped by Nick, he takes Tessa's case.

Throughout the trial, Hope comforts Tessaby laying his head on her lap.

Rough

This was a tough to rate and to read. The book itself is fairly well written, but the subject matter is hard. A few years ago I wouldn’t have been able to get through it, because of my own traumatic experience and that of my daughters. Now I found it healing and encouraging. I am glad that the heroine in this story found her strength and that she didn’t let the disgusting perpetrator win! My hope would be that a story like this would encourage women to stand tall and not let the world at large victim shame us when we have been wronged.
The dog is amazing!!! Of course!!!!!
