Loving a necromancer's son comes at a perilous price...

As the daughter of Nolderan's most powerful mage, Reyna Ashbourne has only ever faced two obstacles: her father's wrath for slacking with her magic studies, and being shunned by many for loving Arluin, a necromancer's son.

But Reyna's life takes a bitter turn when Arluin's exiled father returns to wreak his vengeance upon the city. With the living dead plaguing the streets, the boy she loves is forced to choose between his heart and his blood.

When those dearest to her perish, Reyna vows to become as mighty as her father. However, the path of the magi is no easy one, and she must first complete her Mage Trials to prove she has the required strength of heart, mind, and magic.

Yet the shadows of the past rise once again, threatening to tear Nolderan asunder.

Wow. I am so impressed with this book! Holly Rose has created a masterpiece. This book has magic, romance, betrayal, and so much more. I highly suggest you go preorder it, you will not regret it. I was pleasantly surprised by the complexity of the plot, the magic, and the romance!
First of all, the characters.
I have to say, I didn't love Reyna at first. She seemed childish and annoying. But after the first couple chapters, as we got to see more of her backstory, I began to love her. She is more relatable than some heroines, because she has weaknesses and is not always the most powerful, but she loves her family and friends and would do anything for them. She is definitely a heroine that people will relate to and root for, and her entire journey felt well developed and satisfying.
I fell in love Arluin. I loved him in the beginning of the book, he was such a perfect boyfriend for Reyna, and the promise he made her was so beautiful! I loved him throughout the book, even though he made some questionable decisions....
One more character that I loved was Eliya. She was such an amazing and perfect best friend for Reyna. I had so much fun reading about her, and wish we had gotten more of her.

The second thing that I need to talk about in the book is the stunning world building! It grew so realistically and I really felt like I was in the book, fighting along with the characters. The entire world was remarkable. It was well developed, but (thankfully) not in a cliche way. I loved the magic system, it was complex and interesting, but not confusing. Everything felt so new and magical, this is another book that I would love to live in.

The final thing that I really loved in this book was the plot. I tend to love really character driven books, but this plot definitely kept me hooked! It was full of twists and turns, and, despite having read many fantasy books, I was shocked by the ending! It was original and super fun to read.
Overall an incredible debut book, that I highly recommend! It is an incredible book that all fans of high fantasy, magic, and romance will adore.

Ashes of aether is first installment in a brand new series written by Holly Rose (@hollyrosebooks). Perfect for fans of Sorcery of thorns and Elise Kova’s books, this book will take you to a world where mages rule the cities and magic is so powerful that you’ll be completely submerged.

I loved this book. It was fresh and new, original and well written.

This book is original for the majority of aspects, where others are a bit common, I would say that the book is overall original. The magical system is like no other I have seen and the use of aether as the main source for magic is truly amazing. The continuous contrast between the light magic and dark magic, represented by the protagonist and her boyfriend is something I dreaded to see in a book like this. I was literally scared it would be too much, as we Italian say too much meat on the fire (too many things to take care of) is never good. Instead, I was surprised of how the author managed all this, it was done well.

The plot was a lot. After half of the book I was pretty sure nothing more would happen, and instead I was given even more plot twists and deaths (yeas, I know it might sound macabre, but I like when authors have the courage to make their characters die).

Characters:

Reyna. Can I say that I didn’t like her at all for the first three chapters? She was so childlish, annoying and spoiled. But, because there’s always a but, I read more. I read about her family, her situation at the academy and she even changed her behavior a bit. I’m not even sure she actually did or it is just me who changed perspective. She is selfish, but not too much and I love this aspect: if she has to run for her safety, she does so, she tries to keep everyone she loves outside of her problems even if sometimes it is impossible.

Eleya. I didn’t mind her that much, I wish I’ve seen more of her in the book and not only when Reyna needed her. She is a great friend, but again, she seemed to be only useful to the protagonist and not what I consider a friend to share everything with. I can understand though the type of life they live, so that was not a real let down.

Arluin. I love him. There’s nothing more to say. He is caring, loving and the perfect boyfriend, as for the first half of the book. Then… well, he changed, but I still like him, even if I don’t comprehend his actions. The relationship with Reyna was one of my favorite, his promise was one of the sweetest gifts he could ever given to her. He is caring, strong minded and even sweet. It’s the opposite to the bad boys we are so used to now and this was a breath of fresh air (at least until everything changes).

Talric. I really liked him, at the beginning I was sure he did not want anything to do with his daughter, but I had to think again. He is complex and really care for his family, even though he is busy and always gone.

I think one of the best parts of this book was the world building. I found myself inside the city, studying and fighting with the characters. Everything was so realistic, that I was there too. Everything in the book was described perfectly and even the small details were taken into consideration and I loved it.

As I said before, a lot happened in this book and the finale was no less exciting. Without spoilers, it’s definitely a cliffhanger, one of the worst in terms of waiting the sequel because I need to know what happens next!

At the beginning of the book I was not the number one fan of her writing style, it seemed to be a bit pompous for the type of book and I was sure she was kind of creating it just for the book. After the fourth chapter, I was in love. It’s flowing, easy but not shallow. I ended up eating the whole book in two days, because yes, it is that good.

Read this if you like mage's trials, fights between mages and lovers to enemies!
Trigger Warnings: Necromancy, Death

Final vote: 4,5/5

This book is really impressive and I am so excited that I got to read the ARC of this because I didn’t know how I was going to feel. But I enjoyed it so much and I am looking forward to seeing Rose expand on this. The book has a great start but it slows down a bit, but then it speeds up a lot at the end. And I didn’t love the fast pacing at the end because I wanted more detail on everything that happened at the end. Since it was happening so fast I couldn’t feel everything the MC, Reyna, was feeling because so much happened to her. The world building was really good, and I look forward to seeing more of the world in the upcoming novels. Because Rose does an amazing job of making the world feel realistic. And as for the characters from the very beginning I loved the side characters like Arluin and Eliya. As for the MC it took a few chapters to really like her, but once I did the book got better. The romance was good but I wish there was more done to show their connection especially in the second half. Overall, a great debut of an indie author that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a new YA fantasy series.

Thanks to the author for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for an honest review! :)

"Loving a necromancer's son comes at a perilous price..."

My interest was caught the moment I saw this was about necromancy and magic -- sign me up!

Ashes of Aether is the story of Reyna Ashbourne the only daughter of Nolderan's most powerful mage; readers follow Reyna as she studies for her Mage Trials (though she's more likely to be found on the drink than at the library), and is constantly judged for her relationship with Arluin, the son of a necromancer.

The main thing that drew me to this story was the necromancy -- it was very cool seeing the delightfully evil things the necromancers did with their powers. I wish there was more of this, though I suspect that's being saved for book two.

Unfortunately, I found Reyna to be quite a hard protagonist to sympathise with. She's super frustrating and a little bit flakey (and is constantly getting drunk... like, can barely stand up and doesn't remember a thing the next day drunk), and for someone who is the daughter of Nolderan's most powerful mage she makes quite a few stupid decisions -- look, that can be character building but there comes a point where I just think your main character is not the sharpest tool in the shed.
sorry taylor

The world-building was great and has a lot of potential for sequels to expand on this world. The writing, I found to be one of the weaker points -- there was a tendency for it to get quiet info-dumpy and a lot of simple things, such as characters moving from one room to another, were over explained to the point where it covered several paragraphs just explaining character movements and scenery changes. This I chalk up to debut novel syndrome and is something I have no doubt will improve in the next instalments of this series.

Once again, thanks to author Holly Rose for giving me the opportunity to read an e-arc of Ashes of Aether before its release. I look forward to seeing future work from her!

"That which is aether may never truly die"

Firstly, preorder this book. Please. Add it to your TBR (pub date July 27th). Thank you so much to Holly Rose for gifting me this book in exchange for an honest review, I absolutely loved it and will definitely want to read the second book. This might be a long one, so buckle up :)

Let's start with a brief synopsis (I'm trying to be as spoiler free as possible, but skip ahead if you don't want any):
We begin in the city of Nolderan, in a BEAUTIFUL high fantasy world. Our story follows Reyna Ashbourne, a young adept (a sort of mage-in-training) who is the daughter of the most powerful mage in Nolderan, the Grandmage. Her boyfriend, Arluin - not really a spoiler - is the son of an infamous black magician, but she doesn't mind - she knows he's not like that. He promises to marry her once she has completed her mage training but - surprise surprise - his father comes back and everything falls to pieces. Three years later, she is finally completing her training as an adept and beginning her life, but first she has to get through the mage trials..... :)

plot: 4*
setting: 4.5*
characters: 3.5*

Overall, this is a very plot-orientated book, and very fast paced. It was really enjoyable to be constantly guessing what would happen next, but I don't know if I was tired or something because THE PLOT TWIST caught me entirely by surprise, and like... I should have guessed. In my opinion, it was very well crafted. Holly builds a really beautiful world for her characters, but as a reader I was looking for a little more vulnerability and complexity in some of the characters - obviously I prefer character-orientated plots so maybe that's why. Not that the characters were flat, but I guess I was just looking for a little more.

Age 13+ (-drunkenness, -intimacy)
Books this reminds me of: The Magician's Guild trilogy by Trudi Canavan

My rating: 4* (I really enjoyed it and might read it again, but doesn't make it ontto the favourites list)

Please go and support Holly as a debut author!!

This is my first ARC and it's a lot of pressure because I want to give an honest review without ruining it for this debut writer who's accomplished a great work already by creating a unique magic world.

First of all, I really liked the very basis of the story. In this world, the source of power is aether. It spreads in people's blood and it is a purple source of power that can dry up if you use it too much in a short period of time without rest.

The necromancy theme is also what made me want to read this book. For those who haven't read the summary, the main character Reyna is in love with the son of a well known necromancer who has been exiled and it is not perceived well, even more because she is the daughter of the Grandmage of Nolderan.

When the book starts, Reyna and her friends are in the midst of training as Adepts to learn to master their powers then pass the Mage Trials.

I loved the parts where we, as readers, learn more about spells casting, but especially the Mage Trials which were quite intense. Though, the rest of the story seemed rushed and sometimes repetitive.

The dialogues were often unnatural and there was a real lack of fluidity in the story, except a few parts (mostly scenes dealing with necromancy and the final chapters). I was a bit disappointed as the plot twist was predictable. Still, the end of the book is mysterious and suggests an interesting plot for the second book.

In addition, I think some scenes should be read with caution as it's YA :
- it is not romantic to be regularly undermined and called silly by your partner,
- alcohol abuse is not a light subject,
- even drunk, consent goes both ways : when your partner says they do not want to have sexual intercourse because you're drunk...just respect that and do not insist.

(4.5 stars) With characters you will immediately feel connected to, a plot that makes you not want to put the book down, and imagery that can’t be rivaled, Ashes of Aether is a must read! From the first page, I immediately wanted to stay up all night reading. The detailed imagery made me feel like I was in the book. This journey that Reyna goes on is absolutely amazing! She keeps getting up, no matter what she goes through! The character relationships were so real and made you care for each one even more. The world building was well paced and not dumped on you all at once. I would have liked for there to be a bit more world building in the earlier chapters, just because I was confused on a few things, but those things were clearly explained later. The plot constantly twists and turns keeping you on your toes and making you want more! I think I need book two now and book one hasn’t even been released. Thank you to Holly Rose for giving me an arc for an honest review! It was such an amazing reading journey!

(4.5 stars) Wow, just wow!! This riveting YA fantasy was action packed, intriguing, and always kept me guessing. Everything I’d want in a fantasy novel!!

Reyna, the daughter of the most powerful mage, lives a very enjoyable life completing her magical studies alongside her best friend Eliya and her boyfriend, the son of an exiled necromancer, Arluin. However, as they complete their studies and prepare to take on the world as magistrates, dark pasts and undead corpses rock Reyna’s world. Fighting off her inner and outer demons, she must also complete her mage trials, gaining the power to properly avenge those who have wronged her.

I absolutely loved this book and I stayed up way too late into the night because I was just dying to know what was going to happen next! Reyna was a great protagonist who was easy to root for, and I loved watching her progression as the story went on. The professional and not overly affectionate relationship she has with her father was relatable and realistic.

My favourite chapters were probably the mage trials scenes. They gave off a divergent/goblet of fire vibe, which I absolutely loved!! The battle scenes within the trials were wonderfully written with an edge of suspense leaving me wanting more!

I can’t wait for book 2 so I can be back in this world with more aether and these awesome characters!

Thank you so much to Holly Rose for providing me with an eARC of this book!

All I can say is WOW! Holly-Rose has written an enchanting fast-paced YA fantasy novel that will keep you on your toes.

From the very sentence of the book till the last I was hooked! This book was full of action, intrigue and always kept me guessing. I was a total fan of the plot twists.

The world building and characters are what I loved most about the book. They were both incredibly written.

The world building was easy to grasp and so beautifully detailed; I’d so love to live in Nolderan! Each description made me fall more and more in love.

The character relationships and developments in this book were phenomenal. It was great seeing Reyna’s growth as a protagonist and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for her in the second book. It was great seeing a portrayal of realistic relationships that weren’t filled with too much unnecessary drama.

I always love reading and learning new magic systems. Holly-Rose did a terrific job in constructing a highly unique but fascinating magic system.

I cannot wait to dive into the second book!

Thank you Holly-Rose for gifting me an arc in exchange for an honest review.

If you like Leigh Bardugo and Holly Black, you will love this!
Before starting this book, I was in a reading slump and no matter which book I picked up, I had to force my way through it. Ashes of Aether was not like that. I was completely engaged from the first chapter to the last chapter and it was very hard to put the book down.
The worldbuilding was probably my favourite part of this story. It is crafted so beautifully that I didn't even have to focus on the world that was building around me. Instead it felt like I had always known the magic system and the people of Nolderan.
The characters in Ashes of Aether, particularly Reyna, the protagonist of this story, are also very well-written. It is easy to fall in love with them and to care about them.
It is also safe to say that I cannot wait for the second book in the series and to discover more of Imyria along the way!
A big thank you to Holly Rose for providing me with an early ARC!

I want to begin by thanking the amazing Holly for gifting me a copy of her upcoming book, Ashes of Aether. I was scrolling through bookstagram when I saw her post asking for ARC readers. I swiped, I read the blurb and I was hooked. I KNEW I had to read the book, because it sounded so good and I was expecting something awesome.

And that's what I got: an awesome book, that has quickly become one of my favourites. The world building is amazing, the magic system is so interesting: everything is fueled by Aether, the sorcerers of Nolderan draw upon the aether in their blood in order to cast spells. This book follows the story of a girl named Reyna, who wants to become as powerful as her father, the Grandmage of Nolderan. But first she has to pass the Mage Trials, but more importantly she has to keep her mind and heart intact.

I absolutely loved Reyna, she's such a fierce and beautiful character and I felt connected to her from the very first few pages. Holly is such a talented writer and she has the ability to make you feel EVERYTHING, and I can say that very few authors have managed to make me feel that way, some of them being Sarah J Maas, Cassandra Clare, Leigh Bardugo. I know Holly is going to be big someday and I'm glad to be here, watching her grow!

As for Arluin, I loved him from the start. A very good love interest and I felt attracted to him instantly, especially because I saw him through Reyna's eyes: as one of her closest friends and her lover. He's a very deep character and I really want to see what's going through his mind, I would've loved some chapters from his point of view in order to understand him better.

All that being said, if you want a story full of action, magic, friendships, love, betrayal and AMAZING PLOT TWISTS, Ashes of Aether is the one you're looking for!

I am so excited to read the next book in the series, because I need to know where Reyna's story is going.

Everything was on point! Complicated characters, an original magic system, corrupt magical society & familial expectations haunting characters, twists and turns, shocking ending, reading eliciting emotional responses, etc. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars out of 5 is because my reading experience was lacking the urgency and drive/need to keep reading every chance I got. I didn't have a problem setting it aside and going to another book I was reading at the time. But, I still really liked it and after that ending, I HAVE to know what's going to happen in the next one.

I don't think I've read any other books with Necromancy as part of the magic system. Have you? If so I'd love some book recommendations!

I received an ARC free of charge from the author, Holly Rose as part of my participation in Book of Matches Media's book tour. It was my choice to read and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.

4.5 stars.

I really loved and enjoyed reading this book. I would totally recommend it if you are a fan of YA fantasy books. The magic system is something different and intriguing.

Reyna, the main character, is a unique character that goes through a lot, from love to loss. She is the daughter of the Grandmage of Nolderan and her boyfriend, Arluin, is the son of an exiled necromancer. She is studying to become a Mage and having fun with her friend Eliya and Arluin.
Arluin's father returns and Reyna's life changes.

Check out this book, you won't regret it.

Lastly, I want to thank the author, Holly Rose, for the digital ARC.

ARC Review!

Ashes of Aether by Holly Rose

Disclaimer: The author sent me a free electronic ARC of this book in exchange for a fair review!

First off, let me saw WOW. I never know what to think when I read a book from an author I have never read before, and I want to say that I was so pleasantly surprised by Ashes of Aether. Reyna is an incredibly likeable character and I think that a lot of readers will see a bit of themselves in her. This book was consistently at a quick pace and I never found myself wishing it would just “get on with it” like I do with other books sometimes. It was impressive how much world-building happened in such a short span of time. My one qualm with this book is that at times the dialogue felt a bit strange and unnatural; that is the only reason I did not give this 5 stars. Overall, I am so glad I was sent this book and cannot wait to read the sequel when it comes out! Thank you again to Holly for sending this book to me; it is such a good fantasy read.

What an amazing first novel for Holly Rose! Way to knock it out of the park on your first go round.

I loved the development of this world and the characters. It was so rich in detail that I was immersed in a grand vision of this world from the beginning.

There were several times when I was completely thrown by a turn of events, but I love a story that is completely unpredictable.

This book hasn’t officially released and I’m already on the edge of my seat for the sequel!!!

First, thank you to Holly for giving me this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review!

So, here is what the book is about:
Our main character Reyna Ashbourne is the daughter of Nolderan’s Grandmage and her boyfriend Arluin is an exiled necromancer’s son, which make many people distrust him. But then his father returns and attacks the city and when the people Reyna loves die, she swears to become as mighty as her father and become a mage of Nolderan so that she can finally avenge the people she has lost. But first, she has to complete a series of trials that prove that she has the required strength of heart, mind and magic.

Ashes of Aether is a YA fantasy novel and the first book in the Legends of Imyria series and it releases on July 21st.
I rated this book 5/5 stars and there are many reasons for that. First, I couldn’t put this down as soon as I started it and that is exactly what I would expect of any book. The characters were realistic and they all had their fears and wants though I’ll admit that the main character Reyna’s best friend has a very cliché personality.
Reyna has a great character growth and she has to deal with a lot of loss and grief and she is a character I think many people can relate to! She is so determined about what she has to do and how she wants to shape her future.
The scenery was described in great detail, making it easy to imagine the world and characters. I was able to imagine myself in the world and the magic system was amazing.
There were a few unexpected plot-twists but not too many so it wasn’t too unrealistic – just perfect. There was never a boring moment which I guess is good in general but bad for my health since I stayed up reading till 2am …

The book isn’t even out yet and already I can’t wait for the sequel! Recommend to anyone who loves YA fantasy!

eARC Review

Full of betrayal, with a world so vivid you’ll swear it's real, Ashes of Aether is a must read YA fantasy. This book isn’t even out yet, and I already can not wait for the second.

“Loving a necromancer’s son comes at a perilous price..”

I feel like the synopsis for this book is a little misleading. I was expecting the main focus to be on the relationship between the the MC, Reyna, and her lover, Arluin, when in fact it’s about the journey and experiences of a strong main character.

This book has amazing world building with lots of character development. At the beginning of the book, I wasn’t in love with the author’s writing style, but over time, you could definitely see the development and improvement of the writing over time. The plot did have some slower parts, but otherwise I was fully invested in the story. Overall I definitely recommend this book if you love YA, fantasy, and magic. Holly Rose did an amazing job on her debut novel!

I would like to thank Holly Rose (@hollyrosebooks) for giving me the opportunity to read and give an honest review for her eArc.

First, I want to thank Holly Rose for gifting me an e-arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The first installment is filled with romance, magic, and many twists and turns that you won’t see coming. This is perfect for people who like Grim Lovelies and Sorcery of Thorns.

Diving into this book I instantly fell in love with the world. The magic system is just so unique and different. Holly makes it super easy to comprehend and follow this magic system. The world-building is absolutely amazing. Don’t even get me started on her writing. Her descriptions of everything in the book and her use of imagery are fantastic. Because of this, I could picture everything so vividly and perfectly that it felt like I was physically with the characters experiencing everything they were going through. Thus, aiding in more easily connecting me with the characters.

The plot was no exception. It escalated fairly quickly at the beginning which was something I did not expect but thoroughly enjoyed. In the middle, I like that Holly included the Mage Trials to keep the story going. I’m a sucker for any type of trials in books, so I found them super interesting. Although sometimes the in-between moments of the trials and before them, they were kind of lacking for me and I found myself trying to speed read a bit. However, the romance in those moments and the contents of the trials more than made up for it.

Now, let’s talk about the characters. I loved loved Arluin! He’s just such an amazing, caring, and thoughtful boyfriend to Renya until he starts to change. My heart broke for him both at the beginning and the end of the book. Why? Did he have to do what he did? I so badly did not want that path for Arluin but sadly what is done is done.

Renya at the beginning is spoiled, a party girl, selfish, and yet loyal to her family. However, a series of events forces her to change and grow up. Because of these events, Renya is more responsible and her loyalty to her family and the need to protect her loved ones starts to outshine her other characteristics and fuels her determination to become a better mage. In the end, I am very proud of Renya. I admire her for trying to do everything in her power to protect her family even though the odds are against her; thus, I instantly connect with her in this way.

Eleya is Renya’s best friend and is always there for her. She plays the role of the best friend so well by helping Renya make decisions, defending her against others, and convincing Renya to make some not-so-great decisions but that’s what best friends are for so. Eleya is such a fun and free-spirited character. I loved the moments that Renya and her present together.

The ending was also amazing. I did see a few things coming but still overall enjoyable. I did not think Renya would resort to such methods to protect her people; nevertheless, it aided in leaving the reader wanting more! It sure did for me! That cliffhanger was so good that I need book two ASAP! Overall, I would highly recommend this book!

꧂꧂꧂꧂ Mini Review ✨

I really enjoyed this! From the enthralling premise, the unique magic, dynamic characters and special friendships to the adorable little faerie dragons - this series has so much going for it! And Holly Rose has skilfully fused it all together with clever world building.

Such a fab story that had me hooked from the very start. Both protagonists, Reyna and Arluin had my heart from the very beginning and I was completely invested and gripped by their predicaments. The plot was thrilling and heart wrenching - Holly has created such a perfect combination for YA fantasy lovers. The overall narrative was interesting and that ending really had me excited and tense.

If you seek swoon worthy forbidden romance, unique, terrifying magic, heart-wrenching betrayal and mesmerising action and intrigue, then this series might be for you!

This YA fantasy series is perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo and Margaret Rogerson.

4.6 starlights for a fabulous debut!

I have to say THANK YOU so much for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this book.

Reyna is in love with Arluin, son of Heston. Heston has been banished from Nolderan for practicing Necromancy, a form of dark magic that is so destructive those that practice it are punished by death.

Reyna is a bit of a joker and doesn't really apply herself. Along with her BFF Eliya they enjoy nothing more than drinking wine and waking up in alleyways. That is until a life changing event changed Reyna's outlook forever.

There are some amazing characters. I am so invested in this world. Holly has done an amazing job at not only world building but creating characters with substance that you can relate too.

I honestly can't recommend Ashes in the Aether enough and I am very much looking forward to Book 2: Storm of Shadows. There is romance, lust, loss, grief, betrayal and revenge. A fight to save a world of bright colour fading to dark.

What more could a girl ask for.

This debut YA fantasy book was incredible. The last time I enjoyed a book that much was when I read the ACOTAR series.
The biggest advantage of this book is the descriptions. Holly Rose's usage of adjectives throughout the book is incredible. I don't remember the last time I noticed such a good writing. You feel like you are the main character. There aren't enough words to describe it, but it is a breathtaking experience.
The plot is intriguing, the character development is phenomenal, I mean what else could we ask in a fantasy book?

There are only a couple of things that I would change, which would have made this book a solid 5 stars. First, the beginning is extremely slow, which could potentially turn someone off, which would be a sad occurrence because, once it picks up the pace, you just can't put it down.
The second flaw is one I find in almost every new fantasy book. The plot twist that is going to supposedly rock your world is extremely predictable.
I could literally see it from a mile away.
Now, these flaws are minor and they do not change how I feel about this book. And what I feel is: ''How am I suppose to wait for future sequels?!?!?''.
I am recommending this book to everyone who wants to start reading indie/debut writers, and of course to every single fan of YA fantasy books.

An enchanting story that will entrance you to keep on reading, Ashes of Aether really scratches that YA fantasy romance itch.

A fantastic magic system.
A sprawling city that reminded me of Greek seaside towns mixed with European cities.
Characters who are rooted even with their magical prowess.
And of course cute purple dragons!

Will this book leave you a little heart broken? Possibly! (I know I won’t forgive one part, but that’s all I’m alluding to).
Will this book make you want, no NEED, the sequel right away? Absolutely!

Ashes of Aether - Holly Rose

Rating: 3/5⭐️
Genre: Fantasy

“If we use magic for everything, then life itself will lose its magic.”

꧁༒•Review (Beware of Spoilers)•༒꧂

I want to start by thanking the author for being kind enough to give me an arc of this book in enxchange for an honest review. I really appreciate it.

Now on to the review. This was my first time reading about necromacers and the magic involved with them. I have to say, the magic system, the world and the concept itself had me intrigued and it was indeed amazing to read about how it all came to be.

There is just one thing that did not allow me to enjoy all of these aspects of the book as much as I would have: the lack of connection. This might as well be a personal issue I had with the book and it may be different for many others who read it, but during the first half of the book, I did not find something big or deep enough that made care for the characters. I felt as if even though things clearly happened, nothing did at the same time. So when the first wave of destruction hit, I couldn’t feel any pain or loss for the characters who died. Maybe it was the pacing or the writing but either way, that lack of connection greatly impacted my reading experience.

Another thing that disappointed me was the plot twist. I never, and I mean ever, predict anything accurately because I’m really bad at actually getting the hints, but that wasn’t the case with this book.I thought it was a little predictable and it kind of lowered the bar.

Altogether, I really think the story has a lot of potential, especially with that ending. Unfortunately, I find that I love character driven stories a little more and not having a connection to them made it hard to really get into it.

One last thing I want to say is that everyone’s perception of a book and reading experience are different. So don’t let this review keep you in any way from giving the book a chance, it may turn out better for you.

I once again thank the author for sending an arc of the book and I hope the best for her in future projects.

You know that feeling when you finishe the book and you instantly want to re-read and go back to that world? "Ashes of aether" is just that book!
I dragged out reading it as much as I could to make it last longer...and we're still long away from 2nd book. 😭

I absolutely love love love worldbuilding and magic system here. Description are wonderful and I so want to go to Nolderan, stroll the streets, visit library, shops and restaurants. There's also gorgeous map of this world and I hope we see more of Imyria in future. Also where can I get one of those fairy dragons? Zephyr is adorable!

Elemental magic is my favorite type of magic in books. Aether aspect of magic (and trials) reminds me a bit of how Claire Legrand described empirium in her books (loved those books). Spell names, potions and magic school remind me of Harry Potter. Everything together is perfectly incorporated in a unique new style of magic system I absolutely adore.

Reyna is (refreshingly) not typical all-powerful heroine. She's living in the shadows of her powerful father and not meeting the expectations, a little spoiled and entitled. That soon changes when her life gets terribly disrupted, and we see her character grow. ❤️
Arluin is sweet mysterious boyfriend troubled by the past of his family. And it's always the quiet ones who surprise us the most at the end. Arluin is no exception. 😏
My favorite got to be Reyna's best friend Eliya. She's the cheerful optimist and always has something funny, encouraging or smart to say. She's one of those friends that gets you to do something crazy, gets you into trouble but also gets you out of it and takes care of you when you need it the most. I wish we got to see more of her. 🥺

This book has it all: lovers, friends, enemies, family, power, secrets, some more enemies, many twits and turns, funny and tragic moments and best (or worst) of all a cliffhanger. Leaves you wanting more of this story. I saw some things coming, some parts were bit rushed and shorter than I wanted and the amount of alcohol they take is quite questionable, but it's still amazing story. I definitely didn't forsee the ending and it hit hard. 😱 I don't know if I'm more excited for 2nd book or rereading 1st just before getting my hands on 2nd.

ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDING YOU THIS BOOK! 😍

This spellbinding YA Fantasy debut has everything you could want, from it’s vividly descriptive world-building and action-packed plot-twists, down to it’s adorably cute Faerie Dragons.

“Loving a necromancer's son comes at a perilous price...”

Having the most powerful mage in Nolderan for a father should make life easier, yet for Reyna Ashbourne it’s anything but easy. Her former friend despises and torments her, her father’s disappointed in her mediocre magical studies grades and her relationship with Arluin (an exiled necromancer’s son), has left her a social pariah.

But the truth is she’s happy with her life.Until Arluin’s father returns, his forbidden necromancy causing death and destruction—upending Reyna’s life for the worse. With the living dead plaguing the city, the boy she loves must choose between his blood or his heart.

When those she cares about most are taken from her, Reyna vows to become as powerful as her father, but the path of the magi is a perilous one and she must first complete her Mage Trials to prove she has the strength of heart (and mind) to succeed. For the darkness that stole everything is back, seeking to destroy Nolderan—and her heart.

I thought this was a really enjoyable read, the world-building was really intriguing and the magic system was uniquely creative, I liked the juxtaposition between Aether Magic and Necromancy (and the eye colour being affected by the type of magic one practices was pretty fun—I spent a lot of time analysing descriptions trying to see if I could find the ‘bad guys’.

I really enjoyed the portrayal of Reyna and thought she was really likeable,I deeply sympathised with her and can honestly say I don’t envy the difficult choices she has to make. Kaely made a great antagonist to Reyna’s heroine and I found it very easy to dislike her. Eliya was fun in her supporting role—her alcohol tolerance was also impressive.

Overall, I thought it was really great, after that ending I cannot wait to see what’s in store for Reyna. I’d recommend to fans of YA/ New Adult Fantasy and action packed scenes involving magical duels to the death.

I also wanted to thank the author, Holly Rose for the digital ARC.

Ashes of Aether is the first book in the Legends of Imyria series by Holly Rose.
Our protagonist is Reyna Ashborne, and we follow her journey through training to be a mage, with plenty of romance and heartbreak along the way. Reyna’s growth throughout the book is evident – she starts off as a somewhat spoiled and reckless individual, and gradually grows into a more responsible and dedicated person as she navigates grief and reflects upon herself. I can’t wait to see how much she will progress throughout the series!
The world building was immersive and detailed, with beautiful descriptions which made it easy to visualise the world around the characters. The magic system was also very intricate and well explained – it was a very fresh turn on various magic systems I have seen before. I loved the concept of Aether and how it could be drawn upon through incantations.
I’d have to say my favourite character is Eliya – she brings a much-needed lighter side to the story and her antics never failed to make me laugh. She is unwaveringly loyal, stubborn, and unafraid to speak her mind. Her friendship with Reyna was one of the core relationships in the book, and I feel more books should have friendships like this as a cornerstone!
In the interest of not spoiling the book, I won’t go into the plot too much. There are lots of twists and turns, plenty of action and romance, and lots of time to get to know Reyna and the other characters. The ending was mind-blowing, and I just can’t wait to find out what happens next in this series!
This is a wonderful debut from Holly Rose, and I look forward to seeing her work in the future.
