论救错反派的下场 Mistakenly Saving the Villain

Rate this book
Professor System has issued a mission: to rescue the gentle, kind and tragic protagonist shou of the novel “The Exceptional Furnace”.

Song ‘Scholar-Tyrant’ Qingshi: “Don’t worry, Professor! I can definitely ensure the patient’s recovery!”

In the Immortal Realm:

Song Qingshi praised from the bottom of his heart: “My patient is the kindest and most beautiful little angel in the world.”

Yue Wuhuan quietly washed the blood from his hands and smiled softly: “En.”

Song Qingshi swore from the bottom of his heart: “As a doctor, I will never covet nor take advantage of my beautiful patient!”

Yue Wuhuan took full and complete advantage of the doctor and smiled softly: “En.”

Song Qingshi affirmed from the bottom of his heart: “Under my loving care, the patient will never be blackened!”

Yue Wuhuan secretly hid his monstrously evil thoughts and smiled softly: “En.”

At that inextinguishable summit, upon thousand and thousands of soul lamps, he sat on the god’s throne of white bone, guarding that piece of stone.

“You are the only one in this world who treats me tenderly.”

“And so, you are the only one I treat tenderly.”

Scholar-tyrant Song was absolutely delighted: “Professor! Can I get full marks?”

Professor System exploded: “You fool! You saved the wrong person!”

Song Qingshi is the the most adorable, pure hearted, precious MC since Xia Lian. This is a character driven transmigration novel (although action picks up some in the last arc) dealing with lots of pain, love, healing, and redemption. There are some heavy themes throughout the novel (SA, suicide, trauma, torture) but the translator does a good job of giving warnings for the very painful chapters.

My emotions were all over the place reading this but Song Qingshi was an absolute delight and carried the story IMO. My heart hurt SO bad for Yue Wuhuan but watching the progression of their relationship gave me hope for his healing ❤️‍🩹. The author found a way to include so many cute and funny moments which I really appreciated in a story that deals with such a dark subject matter.

Out of context this quote might not make sense but it lands perfectly in the novel 🤣
“Not only did he cancel Good Morning and Goodnight Kisses, but he also no longer provided nightly bed-company service.”

when i read the synopsis, it definitely caught my interest. but that’s because i love this type of trashy trope so much. and i had expected for it to be just a casual enjoyable read. however, during this journey, i realized how it’s really not like the usual casual fluffy books i read on this trope. it gave me a vibe of it having more intensity and depth. i don’t really think much about character development in general, but there was a moment where i’m like, huh, so this is character development?

however much i enjoyed it, this story was not perfect; there were definitely some flaws, but i really think it was nonetheless a very satisfying read. i had a lot of questions as i was reading but the major ones won’t be revealed till literally chapter 118 of 120.

i hope you will enjoy this book enough to persevere to the very end of this journey.

“The Phoenix god had a hobby of collecting beautiful stones. Maybe this foolish stone would have a fool’s luck and succeed?”

POV: You’ve just transmigrated into a danmei xianxia novel. You’re tasked with saving the protagonist shou, but who could possibly be the protagonist shou when everyone around you is beautiful? You end up picking the guy you just met outside, who was seconds away from dying (what you presumed was a targeted attack instead of intentional on his part). It turns out he was never the protagonist shou to begin with, but you have no regrets. You save him again, again, again, again, and again until this is over the 1000th attempt. The system was the one in the wrong the entire time.

I wasn’t expecting to love Yuesong as much as I do. Song Qingshi was always gentle, understanding, and empathetic as he could be towards Yue Wuhuan’s situation. He attempted to take a psychological treatment for Yue Wuhuan even though that was a bit out of his comfort space. Above all, he always reminded Yue Wuhuan that he wouldn’t do what Yue Wuhuan wasn’t truly comfortable with, not what he convinced himself he was comfortable with after all the years of abuse.

Yue Wuhuan struggled for chapters upon chapters of believing that he was dirty, so dirty he could never be clean again, and that his dirtiness would ruin Song Qingshi. He believed his dreams and thoughts towards Song Qingshi were dirty and animal-like, that he couldn’t let himself indulge in those acts for he’d ruin Song Qingshi. It was a battle in Yue Wuhuan’s head for how to act towards Song Qingshi.

My dear An Long. I loved him the moment he was introduced as the “straight” guy. I couldn’t stand the love triangle. COULD NOT STAND IT. It’s not like he intended to kill Song Qingshi, and he even later begged to be killed so that he wouldn’t do anything to Song Qingshi and Yue Wuhuan. He did eventually come to value what Song Qingshi wanted, even if it wasn’t him.

I will say my complaint is that Jin Feiren’s death wasn’t pages upon pages long. My hate built up for that guy every chapter. I yearned for when he would eventually die. He’s lucky Bai Zihao didn’t feel like playing around and got right to the point. I’m just glad that Bai Zihao’s words cut him where it hurt most. Very much deserved.

“Deep inside his heart, there seemed to be a black shackle that was undone. After letting go of his hatred, his soul became free.”

Even though I was just yapping about revenge, I do love the message that letting go is the best you can do to free yourself. Holding onto hatred only drowns you further in the dark until it becomes all you know. It took bravery on Yue Wuhuan’s part to let go. For thousands of years he coukd torture those who hurt him whenever he pleased, but by doing that he was still stuck in the past. Stuck in the pain and resentment. Now he can finally breathe and be free, living a life completely for himself and his own choosing without a trace of any of the scum who made him suffer.

Dropped this story 20 chapters in. The premise sounds like prime comedy; our main nerd transmigrates into a book and gets a new, powerful body and well-stocked lab in exchange for fixing parts of the story the readers in his world didn't like. But instead of rescuing the innocent shou and changing a dissatisfying book into something better, he accidentally saves a side character who was supposed to die about 7 paragraphs into the original book. Great idea, right?

The problem is that the character he saves was a victim of horrific sexual abuse/trafficking, and the author wants to remind you of this in graphic detail every chapter. The story drives home over and over that being a victim of sexual assault has clearly ruined this man's life, his reputation in the community is forever tainted, his body will never be what he wants it to be and he'll never have the life he always wanted for himself, his mind is warped and he'll never have normal sexual feelings again because the abuse twisted him so thoroughly, etc etc. It genuinely feels like the author is getting off on making you reexamine and relive his trauma every chance she gets, and radiates very warped and toxic views of sexual assault survivors. I skipped to the last main chapter (before the extras) to see if it gets any better, and besides there being a really weird twist at some point in the story (it involved gods and multiple universes? I think?) the main character mentions that they wouldn't blame the rescued character for choosing to destroy his memories of that world because things were so bad for him, so I'm guessing the answer's no. Delightful initial premise, awful execution. Don't waste your time.

4.5/5 🌟

TW: r*pe/ sexual assault, mental health issues, attempted suicide

Before I reached the end, I already decided to give this danmei a solid 4 stars. But the last there or four chapters, that explanation at the end about where everything started? That deserves a 4.5 stars!! Still not quite a 5 stars, but almost!!

I've already read quite a few transmigration novels and most of them didn't bother giving an explanation as to why and how the transmigration happened. I have nothing against those novels because I enjoyed most of them and not that it bothered me, I still liked the flow of the plot regardless. But this novel coming back around at the end, making even the tiniest details make sense is what made me give this another half a star rating!!

I actually want to list some of the things that seemed one thing but in reality, they weren't just that simple. THESE ARE A LITTLE BIT SPOILER-Y:

• I was actually not a big fan of love triangles because of so many reasons, and I didn't realize this novel also has one. I thought it was a bit unnecessary, that the plot can still do without it. But it was revealed that the second love interest's existence served an entirely different purpose than just being the love rival, and I loved that so much!

• There are a lot of reviews from NU about not wanting to finish this because they said that the MC is too 'stupid'. Song Qingshi is not really stupid as they say, he's actually very smart, but his intelligence is mostly focused on his specific field, especially in medicine. He is more like having a very low EQ, not really good at picking up social cues, very ignorant to the things that doesn't concern his work and he didn't really know how to deal with people. He has social anxiety (and usually stutters when talking to other people, except when talking about his medicines) and that drew the line between him and the outside world. Because of that, he seemed very slow in the head. He's very naive and gullible most of the time. But that part of him actually has an unexpected explanation that those SQS haters didn't get to know because they chose to drop this novel halfway because of the reason that the MC is too 'stupid'.

• And for someone with a very low EQ and not good with words, Song Qingshi can sometimes deliver the most beautiful lines:

You once wished me good luck for the night and now, I want to wish you good luck your entire life.

-----

Song Qingshi gently placed his palm on his chest and said gently, "Wuhuan, your heart is sick"

Yue Wuhuan bowed his head and asked, "My heart?"

His heartbeat was speeding up. His body was burning hot, as if it was calling out to something.

Song Qingshi raised his head. "Does it hurt every day?"

Yue Wuhuan looked at him for a long time, and finally nodded. "It hurts"

Song Qingshi took him into his arms, patted him and comforted him softly, "Don't be afraid. I'll hurt with you"

-----

"Don't give up and don't persuade me to give up either. I have the world's most stubborn heart, even if I hit a wall thousands of times, ten thousands of times, I will never look back. If you really can't bear the pain and despair and decide to abandon this world, then I will accompany you"

• Song Qingshi's love for watching the clouds as a hobby. It seemed like something the author would randomly threw as the MC's pastime, especially as a loner, but there's more to it than that.

• All the dreams about the phoenix. We all know who that phoenix is, and that there's something important about the dreams, but once the significance of those dreams was revealed, re-reading those dreams makes so much sense.

• The ML Yue Wuhuan has an special attachment with different stones, especially the beautiful ones. His hobby of collecting stones is tied to his real identity and after knowing his identity, it revealed why he has a natural affinity with Song Qingshi. And that actually makes my heart so soft!

• The MC saying that 'my heart is born for you' to the ML, you might think it's only for romantic appeal? NO!! There's a deeper meaning to that!!

• The ML also has a yandere personality that some of the readers didn't really like but just so you know, he's the type of yandere that knows his own boundaries and limitations. He is self-aware. He might be the best yandere that I've read in a while that never forced himself to the MC. And his yandere personality didn't just come out of nowhere either. You might say that his yandere personality comes from his trauma, but him trying to control his possessiveness so that he wouldn't suffocate the MC is also making his mental health issues more severe, hence the stalemate.

There are a lot more, but I won't list all of them. You can pick this up if you want to learn more. Just know that:

This novel certainly has some heavy topics. Trigger warnings are there for a reason. There are chapters that are really hard to read. Fortunately if a chapter gets really heavy with trigger warnings, the translator has this note at the start of that specific chapter that provided a summary of it so you can choose to skip it without losing the importance of that chapter. I personally read the whole chapters so I know how heavy it got sometimes, so proceed with caution if you plan on reading this.

Thinking back about how this novel started, I was surprised how much the plot grew from just a simple transmigration to something much more than that. I never expected all of it to happen just from the first few chapters and I loved where the plot took me!

he thought of the beautiful sunlight that he saw on the day when he was reborn, beautiful sunlight that dispelled the black clouds in his heart.

a little kindness had made him no longer afraid of this strange world.

“you once wished me good luck for the night and now, i want you to have good luck your entire life.”

this was a really good read! i’m normally not a fan of transmigration plots but, this was still done really well. the main character and male lead had a really cute romance and i liked some of the angst in their relationship. the male lead was especially neat - his backstory made me really sympathize with him and his character was quite unique. the main character being a medical student was also fun to read about.

there wasn’t really a plot? for a lot of it, it was about healing the male lead physically and psychologically. that was done pretty well - i wish there was more psychological healing but there still was a lot… it was going well… until the very last arc. i felt like things got both too rushed and too fantastical. it also didn’t seem as orderly as previous arcs were in terms of how subplots and minor characters were approached. this would’ve been rounded up to 5 stars if it wasn’t for this final arc.

honestly, i would’ve really loved this if it wasn’t for the very final arc. i was planning on getting the official translations but ill have to think about that now…. still a really great read though!

quotes i liked:

1.
he thought of the beautiful sunlight that he saw on the day when he was reborn, beautiful sunlight that dispelled the black clouds in his heart.

a little kindness had made him no longer afraid of this strange world.

“you once wished me good luck for the night and now, i want you to have good luck your entire life.”

2.
now, he understood what it was like to let these threads of love slip across his fingertips and stir his heartstrings.

he placed the fragrant wood comb against his lips and kissed it gently.

if i can fix your hair for a lifetime, would it tie us into a predestined relationship in our next lifetime?

3.
in ambiguous words that the other would not be able to understand, he said words of the love he could not declare, “i want to give it to you, give it all to you…”

my first gift, i would like to give you my body…

my second gift, i would like to give you my soul…

my third gift, i would like to give you my heart…

i am yours, and will always be yours…

4.
“one thousand three hundred and fifty-one failures, negative 135,100 points is the proof. no matter how many missions i do, i will always answer it wrong and save the wrong person.” song qingshi wiped away his tears and said, unbending.

“because he was a mistake i was most willing to make!”

5.
“remembering the affection writ all across his notebook, he smiled, “maybe…no matter how many times i lose my memory, no matter what you change into, i will always fall in love with you at first sight.” he couldn’t run out of the other’s palm. so long as he lays eyes on him, he would always want to plunge right in.”

If I have to describe the experience of reading this book it would be: suffering through every page and Loving. Every. Second. Of. It!!! That’s right, I'm not okay 🤣.

What to expect:
📍Fated lovers
📍Multiple reincarnations
📍Xianxia
📍Hurt-comfort
📍Poisonous beauty gong
📍Past trauma

My mental stability left in the first chapters, and I'm still waiting for it. So this is a warning for sensible readers and people that get emotionally attached to characters. Our ML was a victim of sexual slavery for decades (and other horrible stuff for centuries if you count previous lives) and although the triggering content is not very explicit because it mostly happens off-page, you get to know some details and descriptions that left no room for misunderstandings. It’s truly revolting. But don’t worry, the book tackles dark subjects but it’s not dog blood, author doesn’t abuse readers. Either way, ML suffers from PTSD and suicidal thoughts, which is understandable and logical considering his circumstances. His ideas about being 'dirty' comes from his traumas, and not represent author's opinion about SA victims (I've seen reviews saying things like that and I couldn't understand where they got that idea 😔).

The thing about this novel it’s that you have to finish reading before understanding everything completely. Some very important facts are not disclosed until the last chapter, and it changes your perception of the whole story once you know what truly happened. ( A few people misinterpreted the plot because they left halfway through the book and complained on their reviews leaving low ratings) I had lots of theories but only a few were true 😃, the author did great surprising me!

Finally, I want to point out one last topic: the main couple!

I love love love (you have to say it three times for it to count (◍•ᴗ•◍)✧*。) this kind of couple: loving you through every lifetime, falling in love with every version of you no matter the world or the circumstances and choosing you over what's right or expected. The way they complemented each other, accepted their flaws like it was nothing, and had the patience to try again and again without thinking about giving up not even once!!! So much hurt-comfort and healing vibes too. 😭 How can I get over something like this?

PS: Is there a therapy group for MISVIL readers? Waiting online for the answer~ 😭🤣

dnf @31 % (chapter 41)

Not sure if it’s not the right time for this book or if it’s just not for me.

I really liked the start and meeting out MC and ML. But as soon as An Long entered the scene the plot took a weird turn. The 10 year time gap with all the bodily changes in the ML only made me feel more alienated about it.
I’m not sure if Song Qingshi was a physician who actually treated patients in his first life or a pharmacologist or even a pharmacist. I found him entertaining but also incredibly dumb at times - not his social awkwardness but the way he closed his eyes before everything he didn’t want to see or acknowledge.
Yue Wuhuan was also a weird one. Not because I couldn’t understand his thirst for revenge but his fixation on Song Qingshi. Like why would you do everything for a person that isn’t even able to see your true self? It might be that all this will be revealed at some point in the story but I don’t have the patience for that right now.

Reading the last ten chapters has already felt like a chore and I’ve got enough of those in my daily life. I either read for escapism or to gain knowledge. Sadly, this one isn’t it for me.

This is a difficult one for me to review because I have mixed feelings....

I wouldn't say this was a wholesome read because of all the TW but it did have wholesome moments. At times I was rooting for Song Qingshi (MC) and Yue Wuhuan (ML) but then in other chapters I would find them really frustrating and just walking red flags.

Did I think about DNF'ing? Yes. Arc 2 dragged for me because the pacing was all over the place. Some twists came out of no-where as well which I didn't like especially An Long's (MC's best friend) and I hated the love triangle that involved him and the two main leads.

Am I glad I persevered and finished all the 119 chapters? Yes, the ending was worth it. Plus Xiao Bai (the white snake turned dragon) was hilarious.

I have twice cried with books where the emotional pain just hit me hard. This is the first time I have cried because I had reached the end of the ride, and after going through with the characters so many twists and turns, so many dramatic and joyful moments, they had managed to make it.

The final reveal is very late in the book, and even though I had wished it hadn't felt so sudden I have to give credit to the author for making me believe one thing during the entire book just to, close to the finish line, slap me silly with a big GOTCHA!😉

I loved Wuhuan's character development and how when it ends everything just make sense.

Big kudos to the author for not forgetting any of the characters and making sure everyone had a big mouthful "happy ending", including my beloved An Long.

What a great ride!!!

It was a lot of fun and I found most of the main characters endearing.

The way it tackles SA and other really serious topics caught me by surprise, but it's not all about forgiveness, sometimes you just want and deserve revenge (even more so after all the horrible things Wuhuan went through). And Song Qingshi never judges Yue Wuhuan for seeking that closure, he completely understands.

Still, I struggled to finish the whole story, and I didn't particularly like the resolution. It got a bit long for me, and some plot arcs just didn't hold my interest. An Long is one of my favorite characters, but I got a little bored with the whole love triangle ordeal, since I knew my guy didn't stand a chance.

Unfortunately, not for me, but I don't regret reading it! 2.5/5.

This is a bizarrely hidden GEM. One of the smartest, most psychologically complex stories out there. It's something *completely* different from what it seems, it features an autistically coded protagonist, and it deal with mental health in a totally unexpected way for the genre. No plot holes! It's unorthodox and holds together very cohesively.

Man, talk about disappointing. Going off the premise, you would think the book is about the ML finding solace in the MC and healing from his trauma. While the MC certainly indulges the ML, that's all their "romance" amounts to. They never talk things out or build any sort of emotional intimacy. As a result, the ML's arc is super disappointing. While he has made minor progress, he doesn't go through enough growth to make that ending feel earned. Speaking of which, the reveals are unnecessary and honestly cheapen the story. The original premise is already a goldmine so I don't understand why the author has to make it so convoluted.

Firstly I will say that Song Qingshi absolutely CARRIED this book. I love him so much and he is the reason I decided to keep on going cause he was such a delightful character.
Secondly, why did I end up liking An Long so much?? I have to confess there were times I wanted Song Qingshi to be with him. They had so much potential. He deserved more “screen time” in my opinion but thankfully he didn’t because I would’ve had a hard time rooting for the main couple.😅 This is why I don’t like love triangles very much.

Oh! The ending! I absolutely loved! The closure of our ML’s and Yue Wuhuan breaking free of the shackles that bound him to his pain and being able to move forward to a brighter future where he can be happy with the love of his life. 🤧🫶

I will say at times (especially in the beginning) i loved it and other times it was slow and dragging. My biggest issue I think it’s the pacing and the structure of the story. I feel like the author should’ve let this marinate a little bit more. For me it felt like one of those books that could use the help of an editor. Still, this was an enjoyable read!

Fan translation is complete at https://chrysanthemumgarden.com/novel...

This was a rollercoaster of emotions and plot, surprisingly addicting and no loose end nor plot holes to be found. Everything gets explained by the end of the novel, truly amazing. It might seem a bit toxic at first, but it'll all make sense by the end and the characters get a ton of progress.

It has a lot of dark content and warnings, but all the sweet things after make up for it and i got seriously invested in these love birds istg 😭

Reminds me a little bit of 2ha / the husky and his white cat shizun, probably because yandere and so much bad things happen. I teared up more than once reading this novel ;-;

A heart-wrenching story of undying devotion and redemption!

Why you must read Mistakenly Saving the Villain!

A beautiful and heart-wrenching romance
Without giving much spoilers, our MC and ML are meant to be together. Their beautiful ending is only achieved through sheer efforts and dedication for one another. Their relationship is one of trust, open communication, and mutual respect (despite the yandere tag). One of the best "defying fate" stories I've ever read.

Medical-obsessed cinnamon bun MC / no.1 devotee to ML
Our MC is a cinnamon bun who is obsessed with medicine and research. He loves research, books, white mice, sweet, and our ML most of all lol. His naivety towards love and R-rated stuffs make for hilarious moments, but do not underestimate his intelligence, capability, and ruthlessness (when needed). You will fall in love with his pure heart, silliness, dedication, and utter willingness to indulge his lover (including in bed LOL). Seriously, one of the best "gong" I've seen in danmei LOL.

Yandere, traumatized & beautiful ML
Our ML's journey embodies a major theme of MSTV, which is about redemption and rebirth. His tragic past shaped him into a cunning, ruthless, manipulative, and obsessive individual. His past and continuing struggle will make your hearts break. It's a difficult and painful journey of overcoming past trauma, letting go, and subsequently achieving freedom and happiness.

Through the ML, the author did an excellent job of exploring and subverting yandere trope (small, dark room trope included). Best character development in a "yandere" character I've seen so far.

Painful but heart-warming journey
Is this book tough to read? Yes, at times. But tragedy does not exist solely to evoke pity from readers. The story is tied in together beautifully, and I swear that the heartache is worth it! You cannot stop smiling ear to ear by the end. As the MC says, "you mustn't be afraid of failure... Every time you fail, you are eliminating a mistake. As long as you don't give up, you will find the right answer."

Amazing side characters and side pairs
Not just our main get the spotlight, the side characters also get the opportunity to shine - to overcome past trauma, and find their paths. The side pairs are lovely, and I very much wish we have more extra! One thing I particularly adore in MSTV is the portrayal of women - capable, steadfast, and every much outstanding as their male counterparts.

Perfect sprinkles of humor
Considering the heavy subject matters, MSTV has one of the best laugh-out-loud moments. Mostly contributed by our oblivious MC, subsequent misunderstandings, and distorted public perceptions LOL. The humor is one of the reasons why I wish for more extra stories!

Conclusion:
Despite my initial reluctance to read a heavy story, I ended up binging MSTV. Without a doubt, this book is one of my top 10 for danmei. That said, please head the tags and warnings. Considering the heavy subject, it's unfortunately not a journey for everyone. But if you are willing and able, trust me, it's worth it.

P/S - Fav scene
ML: "Every day, I have been waiting for the stone to give birth to a heart. I've been waiting for a long time."
MC: "Wuhuan, my heart was born for you. I give it to you."
ML: "Thank you, this is also the most beautiful gift of my life."

It started out well. Up to 60% of the novel, I completely loved it! I enjoyed the characterization of Song Qingshi as nerdy, intelligent, and neurodivergent. I also think that Yue Wuhuan is a great example of the SA victim, and his story was well-written. The author tackled the topic of mental health in this book very well.

However, the last 40% of the book was hard for me to read. I found the transmigration and OCC trope too excessive, and in some parts, too unnecessary and "surprising." I felt like I couldn't handle this genre and fully enjoy the story. I think at the end of the day, story-wise, this book wasn't for me.

I really enjoyed this book! It was such an adventure and it went to places I never thought would go! From transmigration to reincarnation to gods and all that jazz. I felt like I went through a really long journey and the ending left me satisfied. It allowed me to explore tropes and scenes I did not expect to see in a story like this.

The world itself and the side characters was vast and colorful. I enjoyed the action scenes and throughout the novel. It was butt clenching and had me not wanting to put my phone down! The side characters were all very interesting too! They made me cry as they all lived their lives and had their stories told throughout the book. The author did well in developing them to have their own unique lives, they did not feel like set pieces.

I also love how I always couldn't quite guess what was going to happen throughout the book. I have been spoiled a couple of times on certain details, but that did not take away the mystery and how the revelation was executed. It left me with jaw dropping moments!

I also admired the MC quite a lot. Song Qingshi's perseverance was so awe inspiring. He went through a thousand deaths just to save his ML. I enjoyed the dynamic and the chemistry between the two. After finding out that he was the Shou, I had some impression he would be helplessly in love and would always go by the whims of Wuhuan (even pardoning his yandere tendencies) but I was so wrong. Song Qingshi was badass in his own right. He did all that to save his beloved Pheonix. I was honestly shook that the whole 'Wuhuan loved shiny rocks and often picks pebbles from the river' thing would really come back and be a very big thing in the ending was really cool. All along, his most favorite shiny pebble was Song Qingshi. The literal pebble the Jade Emperor created and it accidentally turned into a god lmao.

More on the side characters. I enjoyed all of them. As I said, they all had their own stories to tell. I appreciated that the extras gave me more closer for them. I love that just because Wuhuan and Qingshi returned to heaven, the story did not abandon the side characters. They were all given little spotlights of their own and were given proper endings.

I also wanted to add that towards the end, the gods were given a chance to erase their memory of the events in the book. While it did create a bit of tension or a moment of angst for Qingshi thinking Wuhuan would erase his memories of them being daoist partners, I was VERY sad An Lang erased his. He had such a good friendship Qingshi. Now, they were strangers :( I know he is probably embarrassed about what happened and how he developed feelings for Qingshi (which was probably manipulated by the demons? im not sure?) but they had such a deep past and connection for each other which was erased in the end. He just went back to his usual self and I did not feel much growth so I was very disappointed in this part of the story. An Lang was Qingshi's only friend back then, even if it was just an incarnation :(

Overall, it was a very lovely read. I give it 4 out of 5 stars. It wasn't a perfect 5 because while the story and world captivated me and sucked me in, I didn't feel it to be perfect. Some parts felt like it dragged and I had to gloss over them, especially when it wasn't focused on the main couple. I am an impatient person though and wanted to return to the main couple's story immediately! BUT STILL This was such a wild adventure I was very happy I went on.

I think the whole book is just that quote from Euripides, translated by Anne Carson.

Song Qingshi: I’ll take care of you.
Wuhuan: It’s rotten work.
Qingshi: Not to me, not if it’s you.

The author fleshed out the characters so well and I love that the book recognised that love is not always enough and neither is time and sometimes wounds persist for so long that your entire life begins to exist inside it.

While this book (or series?) seems a little intimidating in its length, it’s a surprisingly fast read. I wouldn’t say it’s especially strong in terms of plot, but it was an interesting story exploring trauma and how it continues to affect a person even when they’re on the road to recovery. Yue Wuhuan was a very realistic interpretation of a deeply traumatized individual. His hatred shaped much of the conflicts in the book, as it caused paranoia and distrust for those that wanted to help him. There was even a part where he hoped his affections would be unrequited so that Song Qingshi could continue to be clean and untainted by him. It was heartbreaking, and while some of his actions seem contradictory, I thought that was perfectly on brand for him because he wasn’t remotely sure what he wanted or how to get there. Even though Song Qingshi was the protagonist, the focal point of the story was Yue Wuhuan and his madness.

I really liked the hidden layers to the story, too. (Spoilers in this entire paragraph) The fact that Song Qingshi and Yue Wuhuan were gods that were stuck on Earth due to demonic meddling but didn’t realize since their memories were wiped was really intriguing and opened up a greater depth to their relationship. Where everyone else failed or became twisted, Song Qingshi never gave up on Yue Wuhuan even though it took 1,350 lifetimes to finally save him. Yue Wuhuan was convinced he was a lost cause, yet Song Qingshi dedicated every lifetime to him. Even in the end, Song Qingshi expected nothing in return for his efforts. He thought Yue Wuhuan would choose to wipe his painful memories, and they would be nothing more than strangers. After everything, he still prioritized Yue Wuhuan’s happiness. Additionally, they fell for each other even before the missions. In every reality, they were drawn together. It really enforces the idea of love and choosing the person you want to be with again and again.

Also, the author never pretended that coping with trauma had an end date. Yue Wuhuan needed constant support and empathy, and Song Qingshi never blamed him for needing time. He continued to be understanding. They were very flawed characters, but through each other, they found what they were lacking and strove to be better.

It’s a story of redemption and healing, and the never ending cycle of people finding their way back to their important person.

4.75 / 5: ”When I first met him by the river, the Phoenix flew into my heart and because of it, I disregarded everything and wanted to save only him..."

"One thousand three hundred and fifty-one failures, negative 135,100 points is the proof. No matter how many missions I do, I will always answer it wrong and save the wrong person." Song Qingshi wiped away his tears and said, unbending.

"Because he was a mistake I was most willing to make!"

okay well this book got to me.

this was yet another one of those stories i always had on my radar but wasn’t that compelled to read—just the same as it was with golden terrace!! what both have in common is that some of even the smallest coincidences finally moved me to give them a chance, and for that, song qingshi’s words on the butterfly effect took me by storm.

i really enjoyed how epic this story felt. it had this awe-inspiring mix of comedy and tragedy all rolled up into one, along with some heart-pulsing action and sincere romances. i got really attached to characters like an long and bai zihao—so much, in fact, that there was a point i longed much more for scenes of them, despite knowing they weren’t the main characters of this story. thankfully, i did still find song qingshi & yue wuhuan’s story really compelling. there was something so inexplicably sad about the fog that lied behind yue wuhuan’s character, seeing all the ways he was taken advantage by even the cosmos themselves. i very much wanted to know how his story would end, and his connection with song qingshi really just sealed it for me.

i still wouldn’t be completely opposed to reading more bonus stories about an long & his roaring adventures and/or bai zihao & his weirdly sweet romance with a character we only meet near the end of the story, and yet has such a huge presence, i could hardly forget him.

so much to like about this story, and many more to come!! i loved song qingshi’s narration, and i loved it even more when certain secrets were revealed. the fantasy genre is my favorite for a reason, and this story is an example why.

(i also loved that in yet another tale of the transmigration trope, this one crafted a narrative in where a character like yao wuhuan, who was never intended to be saved, kept rising like a true phoenix. it’s very on the nose, but it still hit hard)

content warnings:

major: slavery, medical content, sexual violence, death, and descriptions of war
moderate: attempted suicide, emotional/psychological manipulation, animal experimentation, and torture

Translation; @C45

1. Transmigrator accidentally saves the wrong abused character. Said character develops a crush-obsession on him. Plot-ish stuff happens?

2. There were a lot of things I liked about this story when we started out. One, the transmigrator has no genre savviness whatsoever because he has never read a single novel in his life. It shows, and it is very funny. Two, the abused love interest is a suspicious bastard who gradually thaws out and it was deeply satisfying to watch him go from victim to terrorizer of abusers. I like subversions of power dynamics and when the passive character is more effortlessly powerful than the genius vengeful prodigy I feel like that's a dynamic I can get behind.

3. Alas, we are done with most of that by the end of the first book. The genius prodigy then goes through a time skip and comes into a lot of really ridiculous power buffs and the plot is now just the protagonist trying to make him get along with his other friend? Which I normally wouldn't object to but ugh. Listen. Song Qingshi becomes a lot less interesting when he's the weakened peacemaker to his powerful friends/love interests. Yue Wuhan is a lot less interesting when he has the power to sweep away most of his problems. I assume there are a few top-level bosses he'll have to work hard to clear, but that really doesn't influence the plot as it is now, and I'm too bored to read further.

Pre-time jump this book was 5+stars. The story was equally heartbreaking, sweet, and funny at times. There were heavy topics of sexual trauma, healing, and acceptance entwined with a loving romance and friendship. The caretaker/patient dynamics were endearing.

Then the time jump takes place and the story feels like a completely different book. I tried to hold on for a few more chapters to see if it would improve but the plot just falls apart. Supporting characters are gone and new characters get introduced so late in the book, that I couldn’t care less about.

The insta love feels forced and superficial. Main character goes from doctor to pharmacist. His IQ and EQ go down the drain. Our other MC starts crossdressing for no logical reason.

I can’t believe I gave up at chapter 98 but I had lost all interest and didn’t care about the outcome of the book anymore.

I’d rather pretend the book ended pre time jump with our MC’s getting married and establishing the first medical school in the immortal realm while changing the world for the better.

I didn't know what to think about this story when I first started but as the chapters went on, I got really attached to them and I love that the book takes its time creating a bond between the main characters. It's a bond that's really gonna carry you through the clumsy second arc.

I'm not a big fan of stories who only reveal everything at the very last two chapters (some might say MDZS could enter this category but I disagree since the foreshadowing and the clues are really well plotted out in MDZS, contrary to this one) but at least the reveal made sense and I'm curious to reread this someday in the future with the knowledge I have now.

There were some really funny moments in this book (Xia Bai, my heart) and I got really attached to the two main characters. So yeah, looking forward to reading this when it's hopefully officially translated someday. I'm also dying to see some beautiful art.
