It is said that the Northern Warlord is temperamental and violent. The people who died in his hands were too many to count. In his previous life, An Chang Qing believed the rumors and feared him. Never daring to take a closer look at him. It was only until his death that he knew the man had given him all his tenderness.
Returning to their wedding night, An Chang Qing looked at the fearsome man and took the initiative to kiss him on the lips.
The man had his brows creased. He pinched his chin gently, “Do you not fear me?”
An Chang Qing hugged the man’s neck and smiled sweetly, “I’m not afraid of you, I’m only afraid of pain.”
And the man had never wanted him to feel any pain.
I enjoyed this story for the most part, but the fantastical elements and especially the mpreg took me by surprise. I generally avoid mpreg stories, so if I had realized, I probably wouldn't have read it.
This is a rebirth story. The MC, An Changqing, was married to the ML and eventual emperor, Xiao Zhige, in his previous life as well, but it was just a paper marriage. They barely even communicated, much less had any intimate relations. In the previous life as An Changqing was too intimidated by the ML's fearsome and ruthless reputation to even talk to him, so they each lived their separate lives even though they were "married".
However, after the MC's death, his soul stayed around for a while and noticed that Xiao Zhige isn't as scary as he thought. When he's reborn back to the day of his wedding, he decides to take the ML's hand and be more proactive in the relationship this time around, and that changes everything. He slowly realizes that while Xiao Zhige has a bad reputation, he treats the MC with nothing but gentleness, and the romance slowly builds up. There are some stupid misunderstandings at first, like ML thinking that MC was in love with his maternal cousin, but they get cleared up pretty quickly once the MC realizes the misunderstandings and corrects them.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
The story can be roughly split into three parts: the first part covers the beginning when they first get married and focuses on their budding relationship as well as the ML getting back at the MC's family on his behalf. Then the location changes for the second arc, when the ML is off fighting against foreign invaders and the MC joins him. There they also have to deal with some schemes from the ML's brothers to kill him. They settle down in the ML's fiefdom of Yanzhou and that's where they find out the MC is pregnant and gives birth, until the 3rd arc starts when the ML is summoned back to the capital again. The last arc deals with throne politics as both of the other princes engage in schemes to take over the throne.
Of the three parts, I definitely enjoyed the first and third parts more, as that's where most of the intrigue happens. The second part focuses on war and military logistics and also the MC's pregnancy journey, and none of that was particularly interesting to me. One of my favorite moments was watching the crown prince get his just desserts. Behind the veneer of a sophisticated man lies a crazy and ruthless sadist who regularly kidnaps and tortures common girls to death, so he definitely deserves his painful death at the hands of his own princess consort.
Interestingly, the story doesn't end with the ML taking over the throne. The author continues the story a little bit past that to establish the MC's place in the new reign, until the rest of the court officials officially accept him as the emperor's partner and give up on trying to stuff their daughters into the emperor's harem.
The last part of the story finally resolves the mystery around the MC's mermaid blood, which is what allowed him to get pregnant in the first place, and he learns who he is and where he comes from when he travels to the neighboring nations to learn about his ancestors. I honestly could've done without this part, which I felt like the author only included because they needed a valid excuse for the MC to be able to give birth.
I enjoyed the story overall and the romance was super cute once their relationship really ramped up. I just wish the whole mermaid/mpreg thing wasn't there.
I've been in a rebirth danmei marathon and this has been my third consecutive read!
I didn't expect this to have a touch of fantasy, especially at the end part regarding the MC's background. I was caught off guard but it's not specifically a bad thing. I'm actually more on the relationship between the MC and ML. Maybe what I loved the most about these rebirth novels is the way the MC and ML cherishes their relationship more genuinely and realizes how they deeply loved each other. I loved the sweetness that they gave me from reading their interactions. I'm so into their relationship so much!
I've read the MTL almost halfway through the novel and even though it's manageable to read, I think I still missed a lot of things. If not for that, I think I would have rated this novel higher.
I highly recommend this to anyone, especially who loved historical and rebirth danmei!
Lots of faceslapping and while there is revenge, this is a lighter story. Most the trauma is in the past. Lots of fluff and easy to read. Unfortunately, I started losing interest around chapter 100 -- I didn't care too much about the merfolk plotline.
The plot line was interesting enough with fantasy mixed up with historical royalty. It got boring eventually though, I guess I read too much revenge historical danmei all at once. The ending was satisfying, but left so many questions unanswered.
