Elowyn, step-daughter of a powerful Roman landowner, threw herself between the man on the auction block and his owner's whip. She had never seen anyone so compellingly handsome, and though they called him a barbarian, she thought he was an angel. And to an astonished Hengist, the powerful Angle chieftain who'd been captured and enslaved, the chains he wore were nothing compared to the bonds fated to join his heart forever to this courageous young woman.
...Only to discover they were enemies.
But Hengist knew his only hope of escape was to seize the opportunity Elowyn had given him and flee back to England. Yet how could he run from his feelings for Elowyn? And how could he know that the one woman he desired above all others would become the greatest threat to his land, his heritage, his very existence.
Hengist, Alcuin, Cuthred and Rowena, children of noblemen in Angle and West Saxon, are captured and taken to Rome to be sold into slavery. Elowyn, daughter of a Welsh lady and stepdaughter of a Roman, meets them when she saves Hengist from a beating and gets her stepfather to purchase the boys to work for him. During the time they are there, Elowyn determines to learn their language and finds that Hengist knows Latin. Their relationship deepens and by the time the boys determine to escape and go home, they are in love and declare themselves to each other as husband and wife. He is 16 and she 14. On the night they escape and Elowyn is to join them they are discovered and Hengist kills a Roman. He accuses Elowyn of betraying them, ties her up and leaves her behind. Her Welsh servant finds her and convinces her that her destiny is in Wales leading her people in their fight for freedom and she leaves Rome with him. The story then moves to England ten years later. This story takes place in 654 when England was made up of Angles, Saxons, Britons, and Welsh. Keeping the various Kings and their territories and allegiances straight during the rest of the story forced me to find a map of England at that time. Lots of battles, betrayals, and reconciliations occurred before the big climatic battle and the relative peace brought at the end of the story. I learned about a period I was completely unfamiliar with.
