Okay, that's interesting! I enjoyed it however painful. Fans of Yuuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen, and Denji from Chainsaw Man will sure love to see this new fish, Shiki Ichinose. There's that same dorky side, but full beast when switched to their "alter egos" that made me miss those characters. By the way, the Shiki in berserk mode kind of reminds me of Aki and Gun Devil (which is painful to think about!!!)

I really enjoyed this. At the beginning sure lots of parts are reminiscent of other series but I think this sets itself apart as unique enough to stand on it’s own. I would honestly give it 5 stars but every time the mangaka draws a girl I feel like I’m gonna lose it (girls don’t really look like that buddy 🙄🙄)

“There was a time where I loved superheroes… … I’m sorry, child me… I’m… I’m…the guy that gets killed by the heroes, actually.”

Shiki Ichinose thinks he's just a regular high school student, albeit a delinquent one on the verge of being a drop out, until someone from his adoptive father's past comes crashing back into his life to finish a job from long ago. It turns out Shiki is actually a descendant from an oni and is thus a target of the Momotaro Corporation, an organization that seeks to eradicate oni from the human world. At the cost of his own life, Shiki's father saves him; and Shiki is suddenly thrown right into the middle of a centuries long war between the Momotaro and the Oni with only one goal in mind - to get his revenge.

If this sounds like a standard shounen series premise, well, that's because it is. As other reviewers have pointed out, "Tougen Anki" starts out as another pretty standard shounen series. It's not bad, but there is nothing really groundbreaking about it, either. Still, I had a good time reading it. The first volume flew by; if anything, it may have gone by too quick. The plot is going at a break neck speed, with Shiki and his classmates already undergoing their first test against each other. The other characters seem pretty standard, so it will be nice to see how the story delves into each character and gives them depth.

I am also enjoying getting to know our main character, Shiki. I was surprised that despite how emotional and hotblooded he is, he is also very willing to swallow his pride to beg and bargain for even a chance to take a step towards his goal. I was not expecting that. It goes well with his philosophy of avoiding petty fights, but going out of his way to get into big ones. He's willing to prostrate himself before Mudano for his help, but he actively picks a fight with Jin after he mocks Shiki's reason for attending Rasetsu Academy. Right now, that trait of his is what interests me most about Shiki. I am disappointed (and surprised) that the reason for such a big part of his character - the same reason for his strained relationship with his adoptive dad in the first chapter - was not in the manga proper but in his character profile at the end of volume. Hopefully the next volume is able to slow the pace down so we have more time for those kinds of character moments.

2.5 stars, not my jam but fans of the paranormal/superpower school/training camp trope (like My Hero Academia, Blue Exorcist, Chainsaw Man, and to some degree Kimetsu no Yaiba) might enjoy this entry in that subgenre.
Delinquent teen Shiki didn't realize his adoptive dad used to be an Oni-hunter from a group of descendants of the legendary Momotarou, or that he left the organization to raise Shiki...who has Oni blood! But when his dad is killed protecting him from a Momotarou assassin, Shiki's oni blood awakens, and he swears to get revenge. Except he can't control his powers yet, and the Oni fighter who finds him doesn't much care for his undisciplined attitude. To get his revenge, Shiki will have to learn how to control his powers enough not to get expelled from Oni training school.

In this story, Oni blood takes whatever shape its wielder commands, whether that's a sword, spear, buzz-saw (hello, Chainsaw Man ;P) or even fancier things like umbrellas or guns. Since you have to bleed to use it, be warned: there is self-cutting! And some characters are flashy about it o_O
The characters are pretty standard for the sub-genre: the reckless hothead protagonist, the fastidious overpowered teacher, the more self-possessed yet somehow more unhinged rival, the timid classmate. It's also a very standard plot: discovering unexpected powers and having to master them, and seeking revenge for a dead family member. Nothing you haven't seen before in other superpower-school shounen manga, so nothing really stood out to catch my interest.
But, like I said, if that's your comfort-read trope, you'll probably enjoy this more than I did!

Content concerns: murder, death of a parent, bloody violence, habitual self-harm (cutting) due to the nature of the blood-powers, body-horror (related to the self-cutting); no nudity/sex, alcohol, or drugs (not yet, anyway), no habitual/gratuitous swearing

Rokuro Kiriyama is baby! (ㅅ´ ˘ `) ♡

The side characters have to be my favorite part. I love the mangaka’s art style and I immediately fell in love with the cast. Despite being secondary characters, they stand out as much as the protagonist. We got a taste of the fight scenes and I can’t wait to see where the story goes!

Your mileage may vary, in a couple of minor details. The character development has room for improvement, and “the protagonist goes to school to get strong and get revenge” isn’t exactly a trope I haven’t seen before. However, the manga was a page-turner for me and I would’ve happily continued reading had the volume not ended. In Shonen, I don’t mind if the development is too deep as long as the story is interesting and the fight scenes are fun, and Tougen Anki delivered just that.

The manga has great bones! And it’s arrived at the perfect moment with so many beloved series coming to an end. With promising fight scenes, this is one to add to the radar!

Who is this manga for
This is a shonen manga that feels really focused on its core concept, but it’s still enjoyable to read! The action sequences feel really fluid and those plot twists just keep coming. If you don’t mind heavy fanservice (otherwise, may I suggest Gokurakugai), so this one is great for fans who want to read something maybe a little more casually but still having a lot of substance to it!

Ichinose Shiki is kind of a demon.

He’s troublemaker with a penchant for firearms who likes to fight and who just got himself expelled from school.

Much to his adoptive father’s chagrin, Shiki has never really adapted to an ordinary life. He’s always waiting for the next big brawl he can sink his teeth into.

It’s just in his blood.

When an unknown man shows up at their house to assissinate Shiki, he discovers just how true that is.

Unbeknownst to Shiki, he actually has oni blood. He really is kind of a demon—one that the Momotarou Corporation wants to annihilate.

Momotarous and Onis just don’t get along.

After his adoptive father perishes saving Shiki’s life, Shiki vows to avenge him.

But, will he be able to control the oni blood in his veins? Or, will it control him?

This is SO SICK!

I absolutely I’ve this series!

It has sone of the best aspects of other edgy, seinen series like Tokyo Ghoul or Deadman Wonderland. The blood powers in this series are so unique and just beautifully illustrated. Which, speaking of, the character designs and overall stylistic choices of this series are equal parts dark and dope.

The who tone of this series is in your face and unrepentant.

Definitely recommend for readers into classics like Tokyo Ghoul or Deadman Wonderland but, also, readers of current series like Gachiakuta, Jujutsu Kaisen, or Chainsaw Man. This is another brutal addition~

This is like Blue Exorcist meets Chainsaw Man meets Naruto meets *insert any manga about delinquent superpowered school teens*. There's really no introductory period, no warm up, you're thrown into some heavy action almost immediately without getting a sense of who characters are, and the first enemy has a lot of exposition to get through to give you any grounding for the plot. As for the plot, there's not much. We're really only given that there's the Momotarou group that hunts oni, and there's an Oni group that hunts Momotarou. Not a lot of backstory or intrigue being set up.

As a positive, the artstyle is clean and fresh to look at, and honestly the oni blood transformations are pretty cool (very reminiscent of Chainsaw Man). But as far as plot and character development, this first volume sacrificed larger concept items and pacing for snarky delinquent teen humor and (admittedly pretty) double-panel glamor shots, just for the aesthetics.

I really enjoyed volume one and did preorder the second volume. The series it reminded me of of Blue Exorcist, so if you liked that series you'll probably enjoy this one as well.

The Tougen get their "weapons" by using their blood. Shiki was saved as an infant and adopted by an oni-hunter. He never knew he was a Tougen until a hunter found them and killing his father. Thus his powers awakened and he is ready to take revenge, but first he has to overcome the challenge in front of him to stay alive and make it into the academy.

Note: This is my rating and review for the entire series.

I’d probably give this a 2.5/5 stars.

This series had an excellent beginning that immediately caught my interest. The art was fantastic and still is. The power system was also neat, and the character journey set up was interesting enough.

It definitely fell flat though and didn’t end up delivering the same quality as the beginning. I did give it a 2.5 though because it has some nice themes it still continues to explore.

They kind of speed ran establishing the story in this first volume. It kind of reminds me of JJK in that way. Like parental figure dies, big battle happens, he gets kidnapped and taken to school. I liked Naito. He's an interesting character. I don't really feel anything for the protagonist. I didn't think I'd want to continue after this volume, but the ending made me want to continue so I'll at least check out volume 2.

I really like the concept! It reminds me a bit of Tokyo Ghoul but nope, I'm not interested because of that hahaha the art style is also really pretty, just how I love it!! And I'm liking the main character here! Though some ppl might say the characteristics of the male lead are cliche, but I love it!

While I like the art style, this reminds me of several other manga series. Overall I’m feeling very neutral and on the fence about this series, and will read the 2nd volume to further see how I feel about things.
I read this first manga volume through translated online scans since there’s no official english translation.

I picked up Tougen Anki out of boredom, and it really hooked me. The dynamic between Shiki and Mikado is amazing—I absolutely loved their fight scene.

The author did a great job (at least in my view) of capturing the essence of teenage behavior, making it feel pretty authentic. The story is definitely on the cliché side, but I can't resist a "one special guy" plotline.

The interesting way of adapting world building from Japanese tale of Momotaro. However, the way of portraying the protagonist is very cliche to some point of annoying to me. You can find every annoying characters that you can imagine from your previous-manga in here 🥲

But this still enjoyable to read if you want to explore for the plot. As I said, I do love the world building in here.

Devoured this manga until the latest chapter in less than a day and I'm lowkey obsessed. I think I miss the cliche shounen plot lines and insane perverted characters (and the fast updates! unlike shoujo or webtoons that take at least a month for every chapter) I hope the rest of the manga lives up to my expectations 🥹

I read these a while ago, but they weren't on Goodreads when I read them. Now it's been a while so it's not very fresh in my mind. It's good. Not super original or anything, but entertaining. I'm still reading it, so it's doing something right. 😂

Es realmente bueno, el protagonista es gracioso y lindo (jsjs) creo que es de esos a los que les espera un gran desarrollo. Los otros personajes igual estan bastantes bien. Han habido pocas peleas pero creo que estan bien al igual qué la trama en general.

Very cliche but a very promising story. The beginning is very reminiscent of the manga Blue Exorcist. The first few chapters rush the story along but I ultimately believe this helps the pacing instead of hurting it. Overall I recommend giving this a try.
