The lack of communication in this book is ridiculous. Everyone is supposed to be in love but no one talks to the other. All of the book’s drama could have been avoided with open conversation. Jamison (I hope he got the ring back) was so passive it was frustrating. Not only did he let Sheila abuse him but he let her blackmail him for apparences sakes. If he cared about his parents opinion why not ask them? As for Shondra and Axel they were the worse. I understand Shondra’s insecurities but come on. I could see how she was young at 20 and easily manipulated, however after her son died and for all his faults Paul made amends and was ready to help, why did she behave so appallingly ? With her money she could have seen a therapist and really didn’t need to humiliate Axel. She kept saying that he went out with other people but she never came clean or at least be straightforward. As for Axel, his ego was beyond as well as his rage issues. In the end it was easier to blame his father for his shortcomings instead of accepting fault. The whole thing is a shame because for once we had 2 protagonists who were professional and successful black women.
This book was ALL. OVER. THE. PLACE. And full of typos and grammatical errors. I honestly don’t know what kept me reading. One of the MMC is Axel he was called Alex at one point. The step-mothers named all the way changed mid book. I thought I had missed a character somewhere. This book is ALL the tropes at once. One night stand, love at first sight, hidden baby, sexual assault, self harm, lgbtq praise and homophobic at the same time, fat shaming, perfect body MMC, billionaire boys club, Harvard Ivy League educated, evil step mother, child abuse, mommy issues, daddy issues, blackmail. And it had too many ramblings and internal monologues that didn’t add anything to the story. And I felt the ending was abrupt for as wordy as the rest of the book was. Again, don’t know why I finished. Don’t think I’ll try this author again.

Albeit I am not a fan of stories that constantly toggle back and forth between past and present, I did like this story. It is also my first time reading a story that involved two main sets of characters with intertwined stories. A different and interesting concept, but a lot of info and different characters to remember to keep the stories straight. Definitely a different kind of read.
This was such a good book. It had laugh out loud moments and a couple of emotional moments. I liked that it was two stories in one but I also wanted more of Axel and Sho. There are a lot of flashbacks but the way the book is set up its not confusing. I couldn't put it down
This was a wonderful book to read. The characters were developed and you can feel what they were going through. You laughed and cried for the characters. A good coming of age story.
