Wolfish #1

Moonborne

Rate this book
Fate has a wicked sense of humor.

When I was sixteen, I met the love of my life in magic school. He'd appear exactly once a year at the annual masquerade ball, then vanish...

Fast forward to the present: to the night I’m attacked and my hidden wolf emerges. As it turns out, I’m a freakin’ hairy, tail-wagging, shape-shifting werewolf so instead of returning to the human world after graduating, I’m dragged to Moon Valley to control my inner beast. Only problem is, I’m not just a wolf.

And someone wants me dead because of it.

When I meet the alpha heir, sparks fly. And bombshell—he’s my supposed wolfy fated mate, but he’s nothing like the boy I loved. He’s cold, sullen, a total jerk but impossibly gorgeous. Of course. And he’s got secrets too. Despite hating him most days, I can’t deny the irresistible attraction…and neither can he. Even after he rejects me.

Little does he know, I’m more than capable of taking care of myself—maybe even capable of taking his claim as alpha.

If you love Leia Stone's Wolf Girl, Linsey Hall's Darkest Moon and Jaymin Eve's Rejected, start reading now!

*** This is an upper YA/NA crossover with schmexy alpha wolves and is best suited for ages 16+. Be warned this is a slow burn enemies-to-lovers romance, and the steaminess factor does increase through the course of the series! ♥

*** Wolfish is set within the world of Azar, along with (in reading order) Hitched, Darkblood Academy, Royally Hitched and Darkblood Prison but it's not necessary to read the other series first to enjoy this one.

G.K. De Rosa has been an avid reader from a very young age. In fact, before she could even read, she tried fooling everyone into thinking that she could. At the precocious age of two, while living in Italy, she had memorized an entire children’s book in Italian and expertly turned the pages at the exact right moments of the story. As she grew up, she always enjoyed literature, no doubt having been instilled with a love of story telling from her early years in Catholic school where she was greatly influenced by exemplary teachers who taught her the value of English and Literature. Though she did not pursue writing in college and instead went for the more traditional route of International Business inspired by her love for travel and all things foreign, after a move to New York City, she found her creative writing side calling once again. She began writing a restaurant review blog, City Lights and Tasty Bites, detailing her other passion – food! The hectic hustle and bustle of the city, combined with long commuting times gave her the opportunity to spend more time reading and rekindled a lost love. After reading countless books in many diverse genres over the two years in New York City, and returning to her home state of Florida, she felt compelled to write something for herself. She had always felt particularly drawn to Young Adult novels and having been an eternal romantic at heart, a fantasy romance was a natural choice. She currently lives in South Florida with her real life Prince Charming and their fur baby, Nico the German Shepherd.

This book was labeled YA to NA... 100% YA.
I am actually hoping she breaks her mate bonds and starts a romance with ANYONE ELSE. I don't like the he is a player and sleeps around and she is a pristine Virgin waiting for him trope. Juuuuust NO. If he can sleep around she should be doing the same. It is 100% puppy love.

This is a really great book, but I read part of the sequel and I don't like the direction it is going in.

FMC goes from being a normal girl who goes clubing and has female friends, to being the only super special female in a large group of men, all the time. I guess that's a YA thing though.

This was a pretty good shifter read, with basic tried-and-true tropes.

My biggest complaint is the obvious aversion to characters swearing. I’m not asking for f-bombs, but this is marketed as “upper YA/NA” with the “steaminess factor increasing through the series” and while the characters are in their early twenties (heroine nearly 20, hero almost 25) it just makes them feel so much younger than what they are. I don’t know, it was jarring for me because it’s very obvious.

Anyway, I am curious enough to keep on with the series and see where it goes.

Hmm..... I mean... Not a lot happened. I feel like the synopsis didn't really happen. The hot and cold from Hunter got cringy very fast, considering the h is a doormat. Hopefully they both grow a bit.

This is going to be a great series just like the others that GK has written! It centers around a human girl who has no witchy powers but being a half witch by parentage she is forced to attend a magical witch school for four years enduring torment by her peers and only surviving because of her best friend she made there named Cass. She also survives because of a mysterious person in a mask at a masquerade ball who turns up once a year for the next four years! Something happens on her last night at the school which completely shocks her and she finds out there is more to her ancestry than she knew and she now has to go to another supernatural school to learn how to control the beast within her.

This story just flies by! Don’t let the pages daunt you from beginning it! Like GK’s other series it may seem long on pages but the story moves by as fast as one can read it!! It’s a marvelous page turning, adrenaline smorgasbord of action and a star crossed love story between Sierra and Hunter and I can’t wait for the next book to come out to see what happens next!!

I recommend this book to young adult and adult readers alike for if you like paranormal romance and a great story well here it is!! You also will be glad you decided to read it because you are going to be pulled into this story right from the start! Like me you’ll be done within two days max and maybe sooner if you keep reading straight through!!

When you read it, let your friends also know you have just read a book they must read as well!! There are going to be a lot of very anxious readers eagerly looking out for the next book in this series to see how a stubborn female is going to fare against all males in a alpha male competition! I think we’re all going to be howling with delight when the competition gets underway!!

I am obsessed with this book. I loved the take on pack dynamics, and how the beta is able to communicate with the pack members. All the flashbacks were great additions to the storyline, and I love Sierra. I can’t wait to see more from the male MC’s perspective, and it was cool to see at least one character from a previous series. This book and the characters totally sucked me in!!

The other awesome thing about this new series is that even though it is set in Azar, a world that DeRosa has written several series in, you can start with this book because it’s all-new characters and a setting we haven’t seen before! I can’t wait to find out more as the series goes on about the Marlwoods and its different packs.

Daytime soap opera

Oh my God... so dramatic and stupid.... I love you but we can't be together 💔 My father killed yours😢. He what??? Why did my mother never tell me!!! But your friend Zander he is so sexy let's have a threescore Please take my virginity, I don't care about
the lies and deceit... Take me now!!!!

OK that is not the exact story but I hope you get my drift. We got a damsel with no self worth and a dramatic douchebag who thinks he's a knight in shining armour but really just a lying duck.

Honestly, this book wasn’t for me. While it markets itself as YA/NA it’s definitely more young adult. There are many plot holes throughout which just left me frustrated and I didn’t like the characters. I definitely don’t like the way the story is heading so I don’t think I’ll read the sequels.

I loved reading about the wolf domain portion of Azar. For those who haven't read any of G.K. Derosa's books set in this world, this is a good place to try it out. Up until this point we haven't heard much about the pack lives. Derosa's world building and hierarchy between packs are unique and intriguing. Not to mention I am curious about the magic behind the different packs.

So far, I am loving the way Sierra's story is unfolding. Sierra is excited to graduate from a supernatural academy and return to the human realm, as soon as possible. So she is surprised to be thrust into the wolf realm instead.

I loved Hunter, the main love interest, but I also loved the supporting characters. We see a character who originally appeared in Darkblood Prison and meet several wolves on opposing wolf packs...but my favorite character is Cass, Sierra's best friend. (I am a huge fan of found family tropes and Cass is exactly that.)

I have to admit I saw part of the ending coming but there was another twist I loved and it took me by surprise. Another thing I LOVED about the ending was that it makes complete sense that Sierra has to face certain challenges in the next book. I am desperate to see how Sierra will react.

What a fantastic start to a brand new series from.a amazing author serria is not are run of the mile normal girl after finding out she an half blood then being shipped of of arcane for fours to she's not best please she's magical less and hates the fact she stands out to everyone at this stupid school apart from cass her bestfriend. Then she meets dragon boy at an epic fail first dance that involves her falling flat on her face flashing her bum to the entire school. The chemistry between this is pretty intense and I love this book was a great read

I have been waiting for the birth day of this for ages, and I am not disappointed in the least! Shifters, unrequited love, magic, intrigue; this book has it in spades. No spoilers from me, but the book/series should be on every fantasy/paranormal book lovers MUST READ list. I just hope DeRosa gets a magical time boost to her writing, because waiting until August is going to be murder. Maybe I'll go back and reread all her books a couple of time to kill time! At least it will be enjoyable time spent waiting.

This academy story is not the usual. Poor Violet may be graduating from one academy but she is forced to attend another. So much for getting started on a career. I enjoyed the author's writng - it is descriptive without being overly wordy. The characters are interesting. I like how Hunter is somewhat relationally clueless - he seems to embody men as explained in Shaunti Feldhahn's book "For Women Only". Violet on the other hand is so busy acting out that she feels more adolescent than adult. The flashbacks give the back story in a way that expands on and gives extra meaning to the present experience and just make the story more. This is a different take on the fated mates coming-of-age academy tale that is worth reading.

I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

This book is entertaining enough that when I finished, I read the next book in the series, but it wasn't my favorite.

It's kind of a mashup of Harry Potter, angsty teenage romance novels, and the Hunger Games, but without the emotional resonance of any of those books. Major events happen, and they don't seem to affect the protagonist. She acts without thinking through the consequences of her actions throughout the entire series, and puts herself and others in (literally) grave danger.

When terrible things happen to her, they don't seem to affect her in the way they would a normal person.

So while the books are entertaining enough, they're pretty fluffy, and you have to read with a grain of salt.

This is fantastic! It’s a great start to this series and I have to say I am hooked! Fast paced this exciting read will grab you and suck you it to this incredible world that the author has built. Our female mc Sierra is a powerless half-blood witch sent to a paranormal academy till she graduates but is bullied instead of getting her magic until the night before graduation when everything changes. With a slow burn enemies to lovers romance building, this is intriguing and has a few surprises and twists and I am excited to be back in this world.

Wolfish: Moonborne by G.K. Derosa is Book 1 in the Wolfish series. The storyline is different and interesting. The characters well developed and growing. Serria and Cass are great. I found myself wanting to know what happens next and I kept turning pages to the end -- was a very late night. Am looking forward the next in series. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary review.

Sierra is about to graduate and go back to the human world after being miserable and wasting time time at the Academy and she's still without magic.
The night before graduation she and Cass go out to celebrate but something happened that changes everything.
She now is at the mercy of the hunky son of the wolves Alpha she locked eyes with on her first day at the Academy and he's keeping a few secrets and so is her mom.
Looking forward to seeing what comes next!

Sierra is a half blood sent to a magical school until she graduates to learn her magical powers. She meets a guy at a masquerade ball but only sees him once a year. She never gets her powers, but then the day before graduation learns her powers are different than what she thought they were. Secrets unwind, foes are revealed and the identity of her mystery guy leaves her confused. She's strong, fierce and everything you could want in a female lead. Excellent start to what will be a fantastic series! I volunteered to read this book.

I loved this one. Sierra is a wonderful protagonist, she has become strong after a difficult time where she was bullied. Fast paced, this one is a reminder of other series based in the same world with a couple of characters making a reappearance, although it can easily be read with no prior knowledge. I love the interactions between Sierra, Hunter, Ransom and Cass and the wide variety of supernatural beings. Huge cliffhanger warning. I can't wait to see where this is all going.

a weak 3 star. This is not an enemies to lover story. The hero and heroine are never enemies.

PROS
- strained or rejected mate relationships are always a fave of mine
- love Cass
- coming up alpha trials are intriguing
- I can see why people may like this book.

CONS
- really wish we could have been involved with Sierra being bullied in school. I don’t have any sympathy for her on that part because I didn’t see it.
- I was not a big fan of Sierra. She was supposed to be a dominant but I didn’t see that. First, she was negative and whiny a lot. Secondly, she lets bullies walk all over her and when she does stand up to one of them they kick her ass. Thirdly, there is not one incident where she dominates or intimidates anyone.
- really could have used Hunter’s POV.
- the reason why Hunter couldn’t take Sierra as his mate was due to a curse. I figured the curse would be something serious like his pack would be wiped out or something extreme. The curse was only that he couldn’t love her. He already acted like he did and he told her he loved her before the curse went into effect. This was lame.
- the part with her mom was annoying. Sierra and her mom were close but her mom wouldn’t tell her about her heritage. If Sierra would have known about her dad from the beginning then she may have been more prepared and able to hide her past better.

Not sure if I’ll continue with the series.

3.5, rounding up to 4 because it’s the first book in a while I’ve finished in a day (also bc it’s the weekend). Kept going since I wanted to see how things played out, and I was looking forward to reveals that overall didn’t disappoint (Sierra’s heritage was interesting, though I have mixed feelings on the back and forth between her and Hunter… it does grate on my nerves at times). Also laughed a good number of times while reading, though I don’t think all the things I laughed at were intentionally funny lol. I was screaming at some of the characters a few times bc I could tell they were being dumb. Maybe it’s bc the characters felt more YA than the upper YA/NA that it’s marketed as? Sierra’s voice is pretty YA (I wish she’d just say the word f*ck once in blue moon you know… just a little) and I wish she handled things a little more maturely sometimes since she’s supposed to be 20 soon.

I will say this book gave me a new kink to read about haha. Probably because I rarely read paranormal romance, but the whole Hunter licking Sierra’s cuts thing was hot, ngl. I also happen to love the fated mates trope (and the consequent lusting after each other haha).

That ending though… I was disappointed as to the reason (and stupidity) behind that reveal/how Sierra’s getting involved in the Alpha Trials. Like when she and Cass were whispering about all that at the gala I was like… how stupid can you get when two seconds ago you were thinking to yourself that you’d need to warn your best friend about the werewolves’ hearing and then you go and literally spell out all the info for everybody??? Wtf lol. But whatever, Sierra does stupid stuff and I accepted that about her character. It didn’t annoy me to the point where I didn’t want to keep reading so I guess it’s fine? Cass is also stupid too though like ??? Private info? Let’s talk about this whenever and wherever. *sigh*

I’m curious to see how the Alpha Trials go! I was really hoping while reading this one that Sierra would choose to enter as her vengeance but then the way that happened is still tempting me to lower my rating to 3 *squints*

Wolfish: Moonborne is a cute YA+ fated-mates paranormal romance novel.

When Sierra discovers she's a half-blood witch, she's forced to finish her schooling at an academy for witches. The only problem is, as a half-blood, she doesn't have any magic. The years are torture, with the only respite her brush with a mysterious Dragon Boy at the school's annual masquerade ball. She falls for him that first year when he rescues her from a rather embarrassing situation, spending much of the night with her in the infirmary-- the only whisper of his identity a note he's left with the initial "H.".

The first chapters of the book float between present-day and Sierra's past encounters with "Dragon Boy" (nicknamed for the dragon mask he wears to the ball). You really get a sense of the push-and-pull of their growing relationship and the sexual tension between the two... and, to be fair, that sexual tension broods throughout this book and the next.

The discovery that her power isn't magic at all--but being a shifter-- side-tracks Sierra's plans to go back to the human world to live out the rest of her life as a mere mortal.

I said the book was cute, and it's freakin' adorable. I like the innocence. I love the characters. The plot is engaging and the book flows very well. It's a brain-candy book with pent up sexual tension on every page. I loved it.

My only chagrin was the book needs a better editor. Some of the sentence structure and grammar was distracting, but not on a much lesser level than normally seen in a lot of writing from lesser-known publishers or from self-published authors. It was palatable, making the story shine through. Though, if you're a grammar snob, you might get hung up on it... but, grammar aside, the story and writing style are fun and flirty in a way that makes the books a blissful distraction from the outside world.

Gods, I loved the characters. Cass, the magical healer and Sierra's best friend. Vander, BFF of the Supreme Beta, Aristaeus (also beta of the Dragos wolf pack). Ransom, beta of the Royal wolf pack. You have bad guys and hunks aplenty in this badass paranormal world built for adventure.

The world crafted by DeRosa has a lot of potential for adventure-- and I'm sure that's reflected in her other books (though this is my first taste of her writing).

A warning to my fellow readers, though-- read at your own risk as this and the next book ends on a cliffhanger. Books 1-2 are out. I believe Book 3 comes out in Late September 2021. It irks me when I have to wait after I'm invested in a series... but these dang Facebook ads have been so tantalizing lately, I've succumb to the guilty pleasure and torture of getting hooked on some of these unfinished, cliff-hanger series!

If this book had a bit more polish, I'd give it 4 stars. It's a good read.

For those looking for romance without the intense sex, this is a totally viable option. The sexual tension from abstinence is a major theme in the book. While there is a bit of fooling around... for the most part, the book is "safe" in that respect-- but it all depends on how close of a brush of heat you're looking for in a book. It's tepid compared to a lot of romance novels out there, but enough to leave the reader with a thirst for more.

Loved the story... and now on to review the second book!

Wolfish? I'd say.

I love wolf shifter stories! I love fated mates stories! I love brutish dominant alphas! This book had them in spades...check, check and check! Hunter (I'm not going to attempt to use his other name...can't spell it or probably say it right) was the brooding, powerful , fierce son of the supreme alpha but an alpha in his own right. He was every bit protective of his mate and tender to only her when his guard was down. Love it! Sierra was a developing character. She's not confident or a fighter in physical or mental aptitude. When we meet her she's a no magic witch blood line. When we complete the story she's a wolf and most likely an alpha. She's ready to avenge her pack, her family and in for a fight against the supreme alpha. She's ill equipped with wolf knowledge and magic but she doesn't care. Lets not forget the various kinds of wolves there are. I've never read a book with this idea before of having mixed races in 7 different groups. Very intriguing. A lot of wolfish stuff happening.

A few things that were irritating for me. Her friend Cass. I'm glad she has a friend and that's all good. Honestly though, every time Sierra has a malfunction or mishap in public its because Cass put her in that situation. Sierra is fairly level headed (which is a nice change in lead female characters) until Cass shows up. Cass seems self centered in her motives even if she doesn't intend to be. The other issue is her mom. She lies to Sierra about her whole life. Even when Sierra thinks she knows the truth, she doesn't. The lame excuse her mom gives for not being forth coming was ridiculous. We don't interact much with her mom but when we do its eye rolling. She doesn't feel like a caring mother. Overall it was a good read.

>Book Review – Wolfish: Moonbourne
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the Wolfish series and ends in a cliffhanger. Sierra doesn’t know much about her origins. When she finds out she is part witch, she is sent to a witch high school, where she discovers she is a witch without any powers. She meets a mysterious stranger at the annual dance. She sees him only on the night of the dance, so 4 times in 4 years. She has no idea who he is, except he is called Hunter. She is attacked on night and turns in to a wolf. Now she must attend were high school also. Turns out Hunter is the Beta to the pack and her fated mate.
>The surroundings are well described and seem lush and inviting for wolves. The chemistry between Sierra and Hunter is off the charts. He has some kind of curse on him causing him to want to break the mate bond. Sierra is crushed, of course and her attempts at dating cause the Alpha to show up in Hunter. Sierra doesn’t, however, ask Hunter who cursed him or why. These questions seem like the basic questions that one would ask, and no one does.
>There is a deadly competition to determine the new head alpha and Sierra is forced to participate. The next book should have that competition and Hunters reactions to it. Sierra’s pain is palpable when she imagines Hunter breaking the bond. Sierra’s mom is introduced, but really has no real part in the story.
>This book is appropriate for a new adult audience. I am giving this book 5 stars. I love the characters and the plot, with its “Hunger Games”-ish competition.
