The heartwrenching new novel from bestselling author Kitty Neale Can she put right the secrets of the past?
London, 1939. Winnie Berry has been the landlady of the Battersea Tavern for nearly twenty-five years, and the pub is like home to her - a place of tears and laughter, full of customers that feel like family. A place where she's learned to avoid the quick fists of her husband, and where she's raised her beloved son, David.
He's inherited his father's lazy streak and can't seem to hold down a job, but when war is declared Winnie is determined to keep her son safe. She's still haunted by the choice she made years ago as a desperate young woman, and she won't make the same mistake of letting her family be taken from her...
But when a young woman crosses her path, the secrets of Winnie's past threaten to turn her world upside down. There's nothing stronger than a mother's love - but can it ever have a second chance?
Battersea Tavern is run by Winnie & Brian Berry, but these days it's more Winnie doing all the running around. Why is Brian now more withdrawn, but ill tempered?! Winnie is a wonderful character: caring, loving and she's always there for her son, David; Rachel who works at the Tavern and anyone else who needs a listening ear. David made me want to laugh one minute and clip him round the earholes the next. Dear Rachel, another likeable character and with her own story to tell - as do many of the character's - and this is what made the story more interesting. Even though the Battersea Tavern is the heart of the story, it's what is going on with its inhabitants, the drama that kept the story flowing - there was never a dull moment! I think that the Battersea Tavern is London's equivalent to Manchester's Rovers Return. I enjoyed every moment of it. The characters were believable, well defined and the story was plotted brilliantly. I was on tenterhooks at times and feared for a character who I also came to like and I was hoping that their life would get better. I soaked up the atmosphere and sadly came back to earth with a bump. I miss Winnie, Rachel and Jan, and I adored Mrs Savage who although played a small part made up for it with character! I would like to think that a surprise will appear in another book, I'm not sure, but I'm hoping! And I am really hoping to meet these precious characters again. This is overall, an enthralling story with characters that you'll take into your hearts, is full of secrets and you'll be rooting for them every step of the way. With the right people around you, you can do anything. Thank you so very much to the author, for keeping me so entertained with another superb story.
I didn't like it, and then I liked and then I realised it was part of a series and I want to know what happens next so I'm going to have to get the next book. Well played, kitty Neale, well played!
This is a story of lots of mother's secrets throughout the whole fantastic book. My emotions made me laugh cry and cheer, all the way through. It's the third of September 1939 in Battersea London, Winnie Berry her husband Brian and son David had the wireless on and it's not good news, they are at war with Germany and Winnie has a main worry of her beloved son been called up. Winnie is the landlady of the Battersea Tavern that she runs with her barmaid Rachel Robb, it was home and all the punters now are all in conversation about the coming war how long will this one last? This book has definitely lots of secrets been hiding and found out as we read, they are going to shock you, that only a mother can keep. For all these mother's in this book I say " Bless em all" with the war on going what will the future bring? I look forward to the next instalment from this author so very much so. It's worthy of double the stars. And I close the end with a happy contented sigh.
I have so looked forward to reading A Mother's Secret and i must say Kitty Neale knows how to draw the reader into the story.Winnie,Brian and son David live above their pub The Battersea Tavern although it's Winnie that does all the hard work.1939 and war is declared and Winnie is scared having seen what the last war did she is worried sick of losing her son. Each day is different in the Tavern but upstairs nothing changes Brian is still a bully and David is just as bad but the day is coming when things will change.I don't want to say too much as it would spoil the book but i will say i have loved this book and i can't wait to read the next EXCELLENT book 5*
After reading this fantastic book I can't wait for the next one I love these ladies. Winnie has a lot to put up with from her husband and her son David but she puts a brave face on. This is definitely a 5 star read.
Started and finished date - 05.04.25 to 08.04.25. My rating - Three Stars. This book was okay read but it was dull and I hate the cover of book. The writing was okay and the atmosphere was fine. The paced of plot was well structured and the plot was steady paced also the ending of book was okay. The characters was fine and I would like them flash out bit more.
I have a little confession to make- yes yet another one. Although I have several of Kitty’s books on my ever increasing ‘to be read’ mountain, I haven’t actually read one before……until now that is. When I was invited to take part in the blog tour for ‘A Mother’s Secret’, I thought that it would be an ideal opportunity to get to know Kitty’s work. Having enjoyed reading ‘A Mother’s Secret’ as much as I did, I am now rather cross at myself for leaving it this long to realise just how flipping fantastic Kitty Neale is. I absolutely adored reading ‘A Mother’s Secret’ but more about that in a bit. I absolutely loved the character of Winnie Berry, who is the landlady at the ‘Battersea Tavern’, and I warmed to her from the start. In fact it didn’t take me long to feel as though she had become a friend of mine. Winnie certainly sounds like the sort of person I could see myself sharing a cup of tea with and having a darn good gossip. Winnie is married although her husband is a bit handy with the fists and he dodges work when he can. Winnie has one son called David, who quite frankly needs a kick up the backside quickly followed by a few dozen slaps across the face with a wet flip flop. Without giving too much away, he is devious, highly manipulative and he expects handouts from his mother whenever he wants money, which is almost daily. Winnie has a big heart and tries to keep everybody happy. She’s supportive to those who need it and once she takes you under her wing, she will always look out for you. ‘A Mother’s Secret’ takes Winnie on one hell of an emotional journey. What happens? Well you will have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you. To say that reading ‘A Mother’s Secret’ became addictive is a bit of an understatement. I made the fatal mistake of starting to read ‘A Mother’s Secret’ shortly before I went to bed. Let’s just say that I read into the wee small hours of the following morning and I had a distinct ‘lack of sleep’ hangover the following morning. I didn’t care though. This was one of those books that stayed on my mind whether I had it in my hand or not. If I wasn’t reading the book, I was thinking about the book and if I had to put the book to one side for any length of time then I would immediately look forward to being able to pick the book up again. I had my own theories as to what was going to happen so I had to see if I was anywhere near the truth or if I was way off the mark. I couldn’t turn the pages quick enough as I raced my way to the end of the book. I found ‘A Mother’s Secret’ to be the true definition of an unputdownable page turner of a read. I was gripped by the story from start to finish and I loved every minute of it. ‘A Mother’s Secret’ is superbly written. The author certainly knows how to grab your attention from the start and draws you into what proves to be one hell of a compelling story. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a fast pace throughout. I felt as though I was part of the story myself and at the heart of all the action, which is thanks to Kitty’s very realistic and vivid storytelling. I always think that a sign of a good book is when I get far too involved with the story. Well I certainly got involved with ‘A Mother’s Secret’. I found that as I was reading, I would say random comments out loud about what I would like to say to certain characters if I could catch up with them- the main one being David. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘A Mother’s Secret’ and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I would go so far as to say that ‘A Mother’s Secret’ is one of my top ten reads of 2021. I will definitely be reading more of Kitty’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

The first book in The Battersea Tavern series
My Review
This is my first ever Kitty Neale book, set just before world war two we meet Winnie, she runs the Battersea Tavern. Her aggressive and known to be violent husband stays behind the scenes letting Winnie do all the hard graft. She dotes on her only son, David, an attractive (and he knows it) spoilt man child who thinks nothing of using his looks and mothers good nature to skate by in life. Rachel is her dab hand barmaid who works hard, is respectable and has her own family nightmare, her sister Hilda, sober she is the sweetest and kindest, drunk she opens her mouth and embarrasses and hurts poor Rachel with her bile. We also meet sweet Jan as she starts up an innocent relationship with one of the regulars in the Tavern. As the story develops we get to meet the characters and more of their lives, belt up and prefer for an emotive ride.
Aw you guys, Winnie is a wee soul, wholesome, she has such a kind heart and always wants to do for others, her goodness is emphasized by the shady characters around her. We see the community in the build up to the war, the disbelief it will come to be and how it affects those in and around Winnie's life. A chance encounter sees Winnie have to face the past and the ripples it creates in her present day life, secrets have a habit of always coming out and it isn't just Winnie who has secrets!
This book pulls you in the pretty much the beginning! There are so many themes touched upon and Neale captures that time period and gives it an authentic voice/feel. I wanted to reach in and slap a few of the characters, honestly the best and worst sides of humanity. An emotive ride for sure, I think depending on your background and life experiences you will find some of the storylines resonate more than others yet all you can either relate to or absorb.
I am finding reading quite hard just now, reading is my go time when times are tough and yet just now my concentration is out the window. I think had this been normal times for me I would have gotten through this in one sitting. Neale creates a world of characters that lets you step outside of your own and enter theirs. Horrific sides of humanity and some of the best, a great blend for an absorbing read, 4.5/5 for me this time. As I said this is my first time reading this author, book two in this series is not out nor a date given, I will be very much watching for it. I will absolutely be checking out her other books!
Wow! This was such an awesome listen. Those of you who are regular readers of my reviews will know that I love a good Audiobook and often lose myself in someone else’s world for hours at a time! A Mother’s Secret was no exception, and I quickly fell in love with the characters (well, most of them)!
Winnie is running The Battersea Tavern at the onset of the Second World War, and alongside her faithful barmaid, Rachel, they welcome their regulars in with pleasant conversation and the promise of a pint. Winnie’s lazy husband, Brian, spends most of his time in his armchair, whilst their son, David, doesn’t have an honest bone in his body.
Kitty Neale introduces a wide variety of characters into the book, each with their own story to tell, many of which are sad and which will definitely tug at your heartstrings. Dealing with alcoholism and domestic abuse, these subjects are managed delicately and in keeping with the era in which the book is set. We need to remember that back in the 1930s and 40s, subjects were not discussed as openly as they are now and what we would see as simply not right would have been normal and expected during those years.
Annie Aldington reads A Mother’s Secret with enthusiasm, compassion, and love. She immersed herself in the characters’ lives as the book continued and seemingly wanted to share her passion for the Battersea Tavern with her listeners.
It’s 1939 and the 2nd World War has just broken out. Winnie Berry is the landlady of the Battersea Tavern and she lives there with her nasty bad tempered husband and her work shy son. Winnie works hard in the pub and looking after her family. Something happened in Winnie’s past and not a day goes by when she isn’t reminded of what happened. Then one day someone appears in Winnie’s life which brings her past right to her doorstep.
This is the first book in the Batterseas Tavern series and yet again Kitty Neale has written an absolute cracker of a book. I was completely engrossed in this brilliant read right from the first chapter. A super story with excellent characters, some nice and others not so nice. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.
This is Book 1 in the Battersea Tavern series and also the first book I've read by the author. It definitely won't be my last. I feel I've been missing out.
Set in an era I love reading about with the Second World War having just been declared, this cracker of a book drew me in from the opening chapter - it was straight into the storyline and the characters lives.
There wasn't anything I didn't like about this. An excellent and engrossing read.
What a Easter Win's husband Brian was not lifting a finger on the home or the pub that they owned and beating her up for answering him back and their son was no better. He stole off his mum, ran away when he seriously injured his girlfriend after crashing his motorbike. Such a coward I just couldn't out it down
Again kitty Neale has done it,. What a smasher ,I can not wait to read what's in the future for Rachel, Jan, Winnie, and Hilda and see if David rears his ugly face!! What a women Winnie is, I want her as my mum! This has been another good read! Thankyou !!
I just loved this book, a family saga that is heartfelt, true and heart warming, just couldn't put it down. Not to read some of her other books whilst waiting for the next instalment.😁
Having never read Kitty Neale before, this is the second book of hers I've read and thoroughly enjoyed it. The way the relationships build and how she takes you into the story is captivating. Looking forward to the next book in the Battersea Tavern series.
I enjoyed this book! Kitty Neale is one of my favourite authors. The way the story is delivered is interesting and fantastic, a little predictable in parts but I still enjoyed it! I love the era it is set in and I enjoy it very much!
I don't read books but I have read everyone by kitty neale. she is a brilliant author this book like all the rest was fantastic and hopefully there will be more soon
