A horrific accident changes everything... Maddalena D’Angelo had it all! The perfect family, the perfect job, the perfect life. Until that fateful accident tore it all apart. Waking from a coma she found her family gone and the life she knew was no more. Scared and confused, nothing made sense. Everything was too much. But that wasn't the half of it... There was the part that she couldn't share with anyone. The part about being able to see a burst of colors radiating out from everyone she came into contact with - even the priest they sent to talk to her after the accident. It was like the colors were a part of them, their spirits, their souls, changing with their mood. She sketched them and painted them and her art was infused with their spirit. She couldn't go back to her life from before because only painful memories and regrets were left for her there. So, she ran away from the tragedy and the ghosts of her family with the only living being left from her old life - her dog, Karloff. To Seaside, Oregon. At forty-three she was starting again - a new business, new friends, a new life. Living simply, by the ocean, things became somewhat normal again, in a different way. She was... almost content. Until... Early one morning she discovered the body of a woman in a giant, pink inflatable flamingo, floating in the sea and around her, on the water, dark shadows were dancing on the tops of waves. Shadows that had a life of their own and didn't represent anything good, that's for sure. Things had changed for Maddalena again! Now she was using her art to find a killer and solve a murder. Can she work this mystery out before the shadows come for her? For Maddalena - Mystery is an Artform...
A mystery series built around an artist who can see and paint people's auras, and use those paintings to solve crimes, has a lot of potential. The main character is sympathetic and relatable and her intelligent giant dog adds to the story. But where I easily accept the aura painting and super intelligent dog, I stumble each and every time the police chief appears. Such an inept, belligerent and intolerant person as the head of police is incomprehensible and at times infuriating. I found the entire idea that such a person could become chief of police unbelievable, and every scene with him took me out of the book. The character ruins an otherwise good book.
I am so impressed with this first book of the new series!! I really like the storyline and I like the back stories and I really like the characters!! It was filled with a lot of twists and turns until you finally learn the truth and I love that !! I am going to enjoy reading the next set of books!!
This is a story about a woman working to rebuild her life after a devastating tragedy. She lost her family and gained an odd skill. After moving across the country, she tries to make a life for herself and is doing pretty well, until murder interferes. Great book.
Well written and engaging first in a series of murder mysteries!
After reading this first book, I plan to read the series. The story was well written with engaging characters and an unexpected ending. A nice surprise for me trying out a new author in a different genre than I have been reading!
Enjoyed the book. It was a bit wordy and descriptive in some sections....could do with a little less talk about the smart dog and focus more on the murder. Also the use of meno male was used incorrectly in several places. If there will be so many references to the Italian heritage I would think she knew more than just that one phrase
I enjoyed this first mystery in a new paranormal series. I love the seaside town it seems quaint, I like the main characters they are all interesting and I’m interested in getting to know them more. The storyline was quirky and a bit fun there is potential here.
Maddalena and Karloff are delightful characters who are new to he Oregon town they moved to. When they went for their early morning run on the beach, they didn't expect to find a floating flamingo with a woman lying in it. The rest of this story takes you on twists and turns. Wonderful book.
A great start to a new series. I found myself instantly engaged when I started reading and was up until 5am. Such a different slant to a mystery. The characters were well developed, and I found them delightful. Strongly recommend reading.
This was a very good story. I liked how it held my interest. I liked that our Heroine has a light love interest going on. It was a goid read. I did not rigueur the killer.
