loved it more than the OG series. But nothing can beat Six of Crows

I love how Rule Of Wolves included the Six of Crows gang (no pun intended) but they also included Nina. I also loved how there is representation for the LGBTQ+ community. ❤️ 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Looking at it as one story, this very much depends on your investment in Nina and Zoya, or, for some reason, Nikolai. If you want to know what happens to either of those, and are just very invested in knowing how things tie up, hit it. There are some good moments, some strange pacing—especially back to back. But it is certainly attempting to wrap everything up nicely and is a love letter to fans. Plenty of cameos and throwbacks.

I liked it more than the Grisha Trilogy and less than the Six of Crows Duology.

The sixth and seventh book of the Grishaverse.
I'm screaming. It was upsetting to let the series go after seven books. I'm attached to everyone around. Nikolai and Zoya holds a special place in my heart but these stories makes it even more special. I even missed Ravka and the Ketterdam team. Kaz Brekker appears even for a little while and it's so worth it.
I even came to love the Darkling, then hate him, then sympathise with him and eventually understand his need to be loved by everyone.
Zoya especially holds all the surprises. I was even more fond of the funny moments in the stories. I love that Leigh Bardugo makes her woman characters so bold and brave.

The story of Nikolai versus Fjerda. An eventful and emotional read, especially if you've read the Shadow & Bones trilogy and the Six of Crows Duology. More emotional than eventful. Like many of her books, Bardugo leads the reader on a slow burn, which lead me putting down the book many a times. But my perserverance into the grishaverse paid off as the resolutions were well-deserved and at some parts I found myself holding back a slow clap.

Great duology, but I prefer Six of Crows a little more. This book has great characters, a great plot, and good protagonists. This series has three point of views, Nikolai’s, Zoya’s, and Nina’s, I enjoyed both Nikolai’s and Zoya’s point of view. Although, Nina’s point of view felt completely unrelated to the rest of the plot. At points it would kind of tie in to the rest of the plot, but her point of view did drag a little for me. This was an overall very good series.

The first book was pretty good, the set up was excellent, then Rule of Wolves came and completely destroyed all of that. Very disappointed. Oh well, I love Bardugo's short stories.

This was another delightful read in Leigh Bardugo's Grisha universe. King of Scars was slower-moving, but had some delightful character development, surprising turns, and more development of how magic/small science works in the world building (though some fans complain that the logic was inconsistent to prior books-- in hindsight, that is true, or perhaps it just felt incomplete, like quantum theory and relativity theory-- describing the same world but not quite unifying them).

Rule of Wolves was probably my favorite out of the whole series-- military and diplomatic strategy for a poor country at war (including managing funding and supply chain), queen and princess succession drama in Shu, a few mini-heists, and an on-the-ground campaign to change attitudes towards the Grisha in Fjerda. I loved how the different plot lines converged towards a satisfying conclusion at the end. There were certainly flaws-- the final resolution in the last two chapters for two characters felt unsatisfying and unconvincing, but it didn’t detract away from my overall enjoyment of the series.

This series attempts to combine the characters and storytelling of the Shadow & Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology and brings (pretty much) everyone back for a reunion in Rule of Wolves. King of Scars was rather slow-paced with the switching among perspectives in different settings disrupting the pace even further. The multiple POV I think was more successful in Six of Crows when the crew was working in tandem and drove the same story forward. Rule of Wolves was more action-packed with all the pieces having been set up in King of Scars, but still there were a lot of POVs and plotlines going on at the same time that converge with the battle between Ravka and Fjerda. I appreciate this author trying to do something different with each addition to the Grishaverse, but I think I would have enjoyed this more had it narrowed its scope to increase the intensity and the reader's investment in Nikolai's story.

Ever wondered what happened to Nikolai after Alina? Here’s your answer.

Summary:

Bastard. King of Scars. Throne of the Double Eagle. Nikolai sets out; hoping to vanquish a monster, the Darkling’s monster, his monster - part of himself.

The Dragon. The General. Zoya would go to great lengths to maintain the throne for Nikolai.

Spy. Heartrender. Nina is sent to Fjerda, with a clear mission. She serves Ravka. But what happens when she and her companion gets an in with the Fjerdan prince?

My Thoughts:

Absolutely adore Zoyalai’s dynamic. And who would have thought that the Shadow and Bone Zoya would end up like this?

I have mixed feelings about Nina. I feel like Nina was better with Matthias, and it felt more right. They could live as themselves; whereas with Hanna she has to play pretend all the time.

This duology returns mostly to the Ravka of the Grisha trilogy but after the Six of Crows duology in timeline and, I would say, that reading those five prior books is a prerequisite to this. Most of the plot revolves around the three central characters of Nikolai, Zoya, and Nina though many other new and returning characters come to play important parts in the story. This story has more a feel of the Shadow and Bone trilogy than the Six of Crows and returns to politics, diplomacy, and waring. The three main characters get a continuation of their tales with romantic subplots, life and death dramatic moments, and a conclusion that hints at a continuation. One that will likely play out in the Six of Crows corner of the Grishaverse. I would say that this duology is targeted to fans of the first Grisha trilogy especially those who have a soft-spot for Nikolai or Zoya.

I was so happy when I figured out Bardugo had written two more books about the Grishaverse. While I didn’t enjoy these two books as much as I did the Six of Crows series, it is still really high up on my favorite series list. I loved being able to read more about the Shadow and Bone characters and Nina. I also love how Bardugo continues to build the reader’s understanding of the Grishaverse and its history, as well as explore the morality of the different characters. I’m very hopeful for more books in the future. If you enjoy young adult fiction or are interested in all of the hype behind the Shadow and Bone tv series, I would highly recommend reading the works of this author.

This duology is a continuation of both the Sorrow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. Having read the first 5 books in the series in pretty much a prerequisite.

It's nice to be reunited with most of the familiar characters from the original stories and there are some new characters. That being said, I didn't get the same excitement as the precursor books, particularly the Six of Crows series.

While the books don't end on a cliffhanger, there is very much a too be continued feel.

With the Sorrow and Bone story streaming on Netflix, the books are now being billed as the "Grishaverse". Seems like everything has to be some kind of "verse" these days.

better than sh@dow and b*ne but 10000000X WORSE THAN SIX OF CROWS. i fear the main reason i hate this sm is bc i cannot fathom Nina being with anyone other than Matthias. they were IN LOVE AND THEY WERE SUPPOED TO BE ENDGAME. I WILL NEVER FORGIVE LEIGH FOR DOING WHAT SHE DID. and even though she did it THE ONLY THING I HATE MORE THAN AUTHORS IS THE LOVE INTREST OF THEM FINDING ANOTHER PERSON. I HATEEEEEEEE IT. LIKE IT BOILS MY BLOOD. i physically will not touch thewse books again bc of it. this divergent type shit bro. other than that this series was honsetly pretty ok but nothing beats six of crows.

It was written beautifully and I felt very melancholic when on the last chapter because I finally finished all the books in the Grishaverse (also I love the fact that in this duology there’s so much overlap between characters from SAB & SOC) and thank you Leigh Bardugo for writing this series it means so much to me and I’ve learned a lot from the characters as well <33

I can say that Rule of Wolfs kept me on my toes the hole book.

Kept my breath with every word and every page

Zoya did deserve to become queen and so did Nina

I am so glad Nina got to feel love again and the fact that Hanna become what she never thought is a very well writen atory line 🥰

I absolutely adored this duology!! It was pretty much an emotional rollercoaster ride for me however, especially rule of wolves. The ending left me absolutely gobsmacked and now I can only wonder if it's a prediction for any future books leigh may write.

I wanted so badly to love these, because Nikolai was my favorite character in the Shadow and Bone series! Sadly, they fell short of my expectations. If I hadn't been 6-7 books into the series, I probably wouldn't have finished.

I loved these books too, honestly the entire grishaverse. BUT I will say they started kinda slow but that could be just me. When the crows cam back I absolutely lost it, If I could choose to live in a book series It would be all the grishaverse.

A super wrap up (I think it's the wrap up, could be wrong) to a very fun series. 98% emotionally satisfying, won't get into the 2% due to spoilers. I think that Bardugo has been developing as a writer as she goes, and the chapter by chapter tradeoff in character POVs is very effective.

Painful to call this a collection. Painful to know a publisher and editor let this go to print. Painful to read this fan fiction riddled with plot holes, favoritism, narrow-minded puritanical finger wagging, retcons, and ooc characters.

It’s fine, well written, but I feel Bardugo was trying to capture the magic of Six of Crows and failed. It went too far into the fantasy with the dead Saints and the fact the Darkling was brought back made me groan. Not the worst in the Greshiaverse but not the best.

I thought the story threads had potential, and I really liked a few of the characters (Kaz & Nikolai were my favorites), but most of the characters seemed to lack depth, as did the story-telling, and it all came off as just meh for me.
