“I always thought it would be mankind that would finally decimate itself. I never imagined the world would actually fight back against us before we could destroy it.” No one expected it, certainly not Rory, a twenty-year-old girl who’s already got a tough life, and who’s about to find things getting a whole lot tougher. Rory finds herself caught in a battle befalling a desolate world, weighing passion and heartache. Upon finding a chemical that alters not just the brain, but the makeup of living organisms, drastic plans are set into motion by people in a position of higher power. It’s a risky move. But without it, the chemical will prove to be catastrophic to mankind. Selected based on an allele only present in a small pool of the human population, the next thing Rory knows, she’s got some fancy new adaptations and is being trained with a group of other survivors. These are the Hybrids, chosen to carry on the human legacy. But will they accept their destiny?
One always wonders what they've gotten themselves into when you choose to read a first book from a young writer. I must say, that I was very impressed with this book. I'm looking forward to the next one. The storyline is captivating, keeping me wondering what might happen next. I do think there could be more explanation on what happened to the planet, maybe in a story line of some survivor looking back and describing what happened to them. It is a bit fuzzy on that part, but did not take away from the storyline. The characters are well created, with just enough about each one to make you feel like you know them. I love the idea of mutated people, especially the bird people. I'm looking forward to hearing great things from this young woman's imagination. Thank you for a great read.
