"Be careful, sweet," he said, with a flash of a grin that made me realize just how handsome he could be. "It's dangerous to feel too much in Never Land.”
When I took Peter’s hand and flew with him to Never Land, escaping the fate of my overworked peasant mother, I thought it was a dream, but all I found was a cursed land. Peter expected me to tell stories and mend clothes all day like I was his mother, and at night, he cried out with nightmares.
In Never Land, no one really grows up. At least, not on land. With my first womanly thought, I turned into a mermaid and Peter forgot my name. Yearning to escape, I was caught by the most dangerous man on the island—the very grown up, cruel pirate Captain Hook. I’m trapped in his chambers, and he makes me a very naughty bargain—but how long before that bargain becomes something more? Something that might destroy the secret that holds Never Land together and frees two lonely hearts?
Captain Hook and the Mermaid is a fairy tale retelling for those who like an adorable happily ever after with a side of serious steaminess !
Lidiya Foxglove grew up on a steady diet of fairy tales, folklore and fantasy and also reads way too much manga. Fantasy romance is her favorite thing in the world, but she likes it steamy. She also loves cats and tea--it's cliche for a reason!
I think by now I should just accept that Peter Pan retellings aren't for me, I did not like any of the MCs and even such a short book felt so dragged out to me that I was bored out of my mind for the majority of it. Even James and Josephine's romance wasn't enough for me to make it interesting.
Oh this was good! Really weird but good! And hot. And Hook was sexy AF! And Josephine so wicked! I liked her! She was feisty and clever. Jo and Hook were so perfect for each other! I loved them. What a twist to Peter Pan's fairy tale!
It took me longer than I imagined to read this book. At times it had me “hooked” and others I felt it tried harder than it had to in the “adult” realm of it.
I enjoyed the retelling-the story of Peter and Hook-even Tinka. It was a nice little twist. It had a lot of adventure- going between realms especially.
I know Smee was not a main character but I loved him and how genuine he stayed.
I think Hook suffered long enough at Peter and Tinkerbells minds/magic and I was glad his story had the ending he envisioned before Neverland.
I was also happy the Queen was able to get everything in place and come to peace with her son at the end.
This one was the first book in quite some time where I could dive into and wanted to read it till the finish, and I finished it allright. We read about a 12 year old girl who gets taken away to Neverland by Peter Pan.
But she's no mother and feels things little girls don't feel and then becomes a mermaid, a wild one at that, she doesn't want to be a lazy mermaid who loves Peter, she wants more and then she gets captured by Hook.
I must warn people the book reads as a 12 year old thinks but grown into a adulthood without the guidance of an adult. Still somewhat childish behaviour and thoughts mingled with adult needs.
This was a short and easy read, necessary to reach my reading goal this year lol. I kind of enjoyed this twist on the original Peter Pan story. When Peter is sick of his women - when they stop behaving as mothers and become women instead, he makes them mermaids. I kind of love how Josephine loved being a mermaid, and hated Peter for his actions. Hook was pretty nice, although his character was all over the place. He went from cute to saying words such as 'cunt', and I couldn't get a read on him. Jo was also weird - she basically told Hook to do things to her because she was disappointed that he didn't even think of them.
That aside, the story turned better after a while. The mystery of the box and their real identities was cool, and I enjoyed figuring it out. Peter was terrible honestly, and so childish. I started to love Hook, and the twist of her turning human when was pretty funny. I was also shook when That was a really interesting twist.
I also enjoyed the ending a lot. Normally, fairy tales stop after the 'they lived happily ever after' part, but this book actually showed their futures. I enjoyed that a lot, I also enjoyed the mermaid princess and Mellie a lot - I'm guessing they have their own books?
In conclusion, I enjoyed it a lot after I got through that first weird part. It was an easy and quick read, quite simple. The relationship between Jo and James was great, and I enjoyed it!
I don't know if I should keep reading retellings because they always make me love the "villain" and hate the hero! In this book Josephine is taken to Neverland by Peter Pan, who expects her to be his "mother" and spend her time mending clothing and telling stories to the lost boys he brings there. When she's not as biddable as he'd like, she's sent to live with the mermaids, or other girls that have been cast out from Peter's good graces.
After being a mermaid for about 10 years, Josephine meets Captain Hook, and works with him to find a box that Peter has been hiding. They fall in love, and along the way begin to grow into adulthood while Peter finds another more biddable "mother", Wendy.
I really liked James/Hook and Josephine's story, and also Peter's real mother. While he does sort of redeem himself in the end, most of the book has Peter Pan being a person who doesn't want to grow up and causes everyone around him to do all the dirty work he doesn't want to do. He's definitely a brat.
Cute story, and I see myself reading more of this series.
Ive been a long time fan of Lydias. I read and reread her work often. Its the perfect length and pace for an afternoon romance. Her story telling is very well thought out and her characters have depth. There are cute little allusions to the story of peter pan but this is a delightful retelling. I pre ordered this book and it was worth every penny and the wait. If you have not read a Lidiya Foxglove story do yourself a favor and pick one already. Its worth your time.
Well I loved that twist on the story. I was looking for a Villian retelling and this new release popped up and I’ve enjoyed Lidiya’s books before. This was a wonderful take on the classic and full of spice and heat. I don’t want to spoil the end but I definitely didn’t see that coming. I’m definitely going to have to go back and read the other books in this series.
This was almost like an anti-Villian take on the tale where Peter was definitely not the good guy but neither was Hook. Very satisfying read with a happily ever after and complete story.
Complex Adult Story A retelling of Peter Pan with a lot of twists, several shocks that took me on a wild ride to Neverland and back again. There is adult content mixed throughout. Josephine is on quite a journey but she does get to a very happy ending eventually. The ending is filled with love and sadness that had me shed a tear at the heartfelt ending. Quite an interesting story not for everyone but made for an interesting read for a Sunday afternoon. I did like the cover.
Ms Foxglove returns to the fairytale world with a delicious new take on the Peter Pan story. The tale focuses on Captain Hook and creates a fascinating origin story for the legendary rivals. The romance is tender and there are some bittersweet moments. I highly recommend this book.
A quick read with a decent twist on the classic PeterPan story. I would’ve liked to hear more about the pirates and lost boys, but as my first introduction to this series, I will read more with my expectations prepared.
A very interesting switch on a old tale! It did a wonderful job at keeping my attention, and a wonderful ending! There's not a ton of spice, but what's there is very well written! And the story itself is interesting enough to keep you reading even without a ton of spice!
I didn't expect much from it. But I honestly didn't mind it. The plot wanst too bad. The"heat" way tho ngl, really bad and cringe. But three stars is good got it. Why did I read it no idea but I didn't hate it
