"Tomorrow we march into battle, to conquer our enemies and kick open the door to freedom—or die trying."
It’s late spring 1861, and former army captain Nathan Chambers has escaped his murderous enemies in Richmond only to find himself besieged in his own home. As the secession threatens to break out in Civil War, local pro-Confederate militia surround Mountain Meadows intending to exterminate its treasonous guardians. But Nathan and his ex-soldiers from Texas are not easily intimidated. They prepare for battle with an unexpected ally; the black men of the farm have volunteered to join the fight!
Meanwhile, Evelyn is followed by government agents to her Underground Railroad hideout where they threaten murder and mayhem against the runaway slaves she is sheltering … unless she can find a way to stop them in time.
The Road to the Breaking Series is an epic tale of a young nation seething with debauchery, brutality, corruption, and political intrigue, unwittingly on the brink of a deadly precipice: the American Civil War. In Book 4 of the series, Nathan Chambers’ enemies threaten to bury his peaceful western Virginia home in violence and drown it in blood unless he and his men can achieve an improbable Breakout.
Chris A. Bennett grew up on the shores of Klamath Lake in southeastern Oregon. For a young boy it was a dream world of water, hills, forests, and abundant wildlife. His love for action and adventure morphed into a lifelong love for books when his Mom read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to the family on a long road trip.
It was routine and normal for the family dinner table discussions to involve history, politics, and anything interesting going on in the world. So, when he attended the University of Oregon it seemed perfectly natural (and easy) to study history and political science. But everyone said you couldn't make a living in those fields, so he decided to try his hand at Computer Science. He's been writing professionally, in the software development business for more than 35 years now.
However, Chris's thirst for adventure never faded and he began to live out his love of history onto the pages of his first book, Road to the Breaking. Once he started writing he just couldn't stop and the result is The Road to the Breaking series; an epic journey across a young nation seething with debauchery, brutality, corruption, and political intrigue, unwittingly on the brink of an unimaginable disaster: the American Civil War.
Chris currently lives near Seattle with his wife Patricia. His three adult children Nick, Rachel, and Josh also live in the Puget Sound area.
In this book Capt. Chambers and his men and his family are running into battles with newly formed Confederate sympathizers on their way heading north away from the Richmond area. The characters are very well formed and I can picture their descriptions in my mind.
I got this book from a goodreads giveaway. I haven't read the first three volumes of the story and some of my problems with the book stem from my own ignorance of characters and their relationships but at the same time I couldn't really tell why this was printed as a separate volume instead of as part of a larger continuous book. That said the writer seemed mostly preoccupied by battle tactics and strategies (much was made about bayonets and their use in combat) and more problematic aspects of the story were glossed over. This is at heart the story of a "good" slave owner versus a "bad" slave owner and I'm not sure that is a story that is aching to be told.
Heart-stopping, causing deep breathing and anger building seemingly necessary under the circumstances. But, given strength and courage by Chris Bennett's fine writings, I can forge on to Book 5!! I appreciate Chris's fine knowledge of historical facts and his interestingly creative fictional characters along with their brave actions and fortitude!! I couldn't stop reading the 9 book series now even if I wanted to...just sorry I didn't find these books sooner!!
The continuation of the story of Nathan Chambers and the beginning of the Civil War has been a joy to read. I am eager to find what will happen next. I actually do not want the story to end but I know it must. Thank you for providing such a wonderful read.
The moral perspectives and states of consciousness exhibited by the characters is extraordinary in presentation. The story bears witness to a Greater Power so wonderfully directive when there is willingness to do the Right thing for the highest and greatest good of everyone involved. Chris Bennett , keep up this great and instructive work.
This is a fictional history that is very enjoyable!
I have read all of this series . I am in love with the main character, Nathaniel Chambers. Learning the history of the Civil War has been interesting to say the least. I don't want the series to end! ! Bravo and thanK you to the author, Mr Bennett. I hope the remaining five are as enjoyable as the first four!
Very well written, with very good Actual deeds done by many during the actual war, including my own g grandparents who left eastern Kentucky for northern Missouri, giving much to their former slaves whom they freed prior to the war.
Another outstanding novel in the series. Amazing turn of events in every chapter almost! Attention to detail is extraordinary. Can't wait to start the next novel in the series.
This one was so good it was like hearing my grandfather talk about his grandfather's experiences in the beginning of the civil war! Loved how it ended!
Another fast paced read from Chris Bennett. Nathan, his men, Ms. Abby, and all the recently freed slaves must abandon their home and head north. Along the way they must fight hastily assembled militia recruited by a new Confederate Officer and Walters. Mrs. Margaret Walters makes her escape and heads north. Looking forward to reading more of this series.
