If you haven't read Inferno, stop and go read it. This takes place right after the end and is a book bridging the gap between series.
I loved seeing more of Con and Rhi, but it was too quiet without all the other Dragon Kings. They do eventually make an appearance along with Erith and the Repears.
There are teasers for future books Henry and the Dragon Queen. Varek. The dragon bridge.
Heart of Gold - 4 stars A very quick read where we get to see inside one of Con's red journals, and so does Rhi. Then she leads him on a little scavenger hunt to find her. No bad guys, no drama, just sweet romance.
Of Fire and Flame - 3 stars If you're wondering about the break-up of Rhi and Con this will fill you in. Plus there's Death intervention with the twins. There was no romance just a lot of history plus we still don't know how Death got the twins from here to where we see them in Dragon Revealed
The King of the Dragon Kings finally finds a moment of peace that has been out of reach for so long. With no enemies knocking on the door Con and his long awaited mate Rhi. A time of talking, of love and of reflection. A meaning look at their past and plans for the future. With the holidays approaching and family returning home, Con and Rhi give readers a deep look into who they are with their passion, words and actions.
Whisky and Wishes is a feel good holiday tale. A homecoming, a gathering of friends and loved ones and a glimpse of what’s to come. Donna Grant just made me love that Dragon King even more. A feel good story with a bit of emotions and heavy on the love.
HEART OF GOLD
Rhi and Con have loved each other for eons. They have lived many lifetimes in emotional pain and wanting one another. To have that one love and then not too yet still crave them deep within their souls. To try to hate more than love is doing a number on them both.
Heart of Gold is a confession of love and pain, the emotional depth at which one feels for another. A raw and compelling look inside two such strong beings. Con and Rhi were made for each other, it just took them longer than most to get there.
OF FIRE AND FLAME
A heartbreaking tale that explains so much.
First person accounts told by three different beings that through the want of doing the right thing has faded them together. Three amazingly strong people who have taken on tasks that are bigger than themselves. Making decisions hard and love even harder. Making the sacrifice of themselves for their greater good. The best of intentions are sometimes not the consequence that is expected. Con, Rhi and Erith give a bit more understanding the actions they have taken.
I truly enjoyed Of Fire and Flame. This is a heart wrenching story that hit you so deep. The raw emotion of the story alone is excellent writing and itself yet seeing a more vulnerable side of three amazingly strong characters is definitely a treat for readers of the series. While the part story does not have a happy ending, we do know that that happy ending comes. However I feel that there are going to be challenges in the future that will test Con, Rhi and Erith once these events before known within their world.
Wishes and Whisky Quick and easy read. This novella, happening at Dreagan-the home of the Dragon Kings, is set at Christmastime. Covering only just over a week in time, it follows immediately after Constantine’s book, Inferno. While all is not right in the world, Con and his mate want to celebrate many things, not the least being that they are together and now mated. The story touches on many of the Kings, and on the Reapers, who all come together for the celebration. This novella can be read as a stand-alone, but is much better when read in Donna Grant’s order. A very enjoyable “Christmas” story, and also sets up the next series of books- Dragon Kings.
Heart of Gold The history of a dragon’s love. This short novella follows Constantine and Rhiannon shortly after their mating, taking place at Dreagan around Valentine’s Day. From a prior book, the series readers know that Constantine kept two different journals, one detailing his daily life as King of Dragon Kings, and the workings at Dreagan; and the second journals, with red covers, where he has written his personal thoughts and feelings. Most of these he had burned, but not all. Rhi has discovered one, which she reads. This novella details what she’s read, and what she does to Con because of her reading it. Wonderfully written, a completely uplifting story.
Of Fire and Flame Bits of ancient history…. This is a very short book, and it deals with three of the characters from Donna Grant’s Dark World series of books: Rhiannon-who is a light Fae; Constantine-a Dragon King who is King of Golds and King of Dragon Kings; and Death -also known as Erith, a woman who appears to be a goddess. The story gives a little history of their character, and how and why their interactions are important to the overall series. If you are a fan of Donna Grant’s series (which is many books-over 55 total in 4 different series) you will enjoy reading this explanation of events that are still influencing this ongoing series. Series referenced are Dark Sword, Dark Warriors, Dark Kings, and Reapers; new series continuing on with new characters from the Dark Kings books will be the Dragon Kings series. If you are a new reader, this is not the book to start with, but if you’ve read most, or all of the series, this book will fill in some of the holes that were intentionally left blank. An interesting read, and I always enjoy learning more about 3 of the most important recurring characters.
I absolutely loved these novellas and the little snippets of the present and the past that they offered to long-time readers. It also helps with more Con and Rhi time since readers waited so long for their book getting more of them is like little extra presents. Each novella is a quick read and will make you want to read the whole series again to see what you missed. *I received an ARC for an honest review*
NOTE: A DRAGON’S TALE is a collection of three previously released novellas in Donna Grant’s DARK KINGS paranormal, romance series.
_____
WHISKY AND WISHES:
WHISKY AND WISHES by Donna Grant is a holiday novella found in the author’s Dark Kings series following the revelations in book eighteen INFERNO.
NOTE: If you have not read book eighteen INFERNO there may be spoilers in my review.
Told from third person perspectives WHISKY AND WISHES focuses on the rekindling relationship between Constantine, King of Kings, and his mate, Fae warrior Rhiannon. With Con and Rhi’s relationship starting anew, the other Dragon Kings and their mates have booked time away to allow Con and Rhi to rekindle their love but the approach of the human holidays aka Christmas, Hanukkah, and the New Year, Rhi sets about to decorate the castle, preparing for a welcome home celebration for the Kings, the Reapers and the Fae, but there continues to be heart break and pain as Rhi and Con have not heard from the other Dragons and their loved ones, who were sent to the other realm. As Rhi and Con come to a decision, the Kings struggle to locate one of their own.
WHISKY AND WISHES is a quick read; a fast paced novella that bridges between the Dark Kings and Donna Grant’s new spin off series beginning with Dragon Revealed (Varek, King of Lichens) in January 2021. The premise is entertaining; the romance is spicy and seductive; the characters are numerous and familiar. WHISKY AND WISHES is a bit of a filler between series, setting up for a new adventure with the dragons and their mates.

OF FIRE AND FLAME
OF FIRE AND FLAME is a prequel novella in Donna Grant’s DARK KINGS paranormal/fantasy romance series focusing on the Dragon Kings and the women they love. OF FIRE AND FLAME is a short story that reveals some of the history between Constantine, King of the Dragon Kings, his mate and Light Fae Rhiannon, and Erith aka Death.
SOME BACKGROUND: The DARK KINGS is a spinoff from Donna Grant’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland, including the latest spin off about the Fae executioners known as the REAPERS.
Told from three third person perspectives (Con, Rhi and Death) OF FIRE AND FLAME is a quick read; a short story that focuses on the emotional heart break of Con and Rhi’s break up in the face of Con’s need to protect the dragons he rules. As Rhi struggles to find a place in the world, a trip to Fae finds Rhi battling for her life, a life that is about to change for all eternity. Meanwhile, Death must face a loss of her own, banning a fellow Reaper in the face of betrayal but as Rhi’s life hangs in the balance, Death takes responsibility for the lives of two young souls.
OF FIRE AND FLAME is a revealing, heart breaking and emotional short story of turmoil, sacrifice , desolation and grief.

HEART OF GOLD
HEART OF GOLD is the February 2021 novella in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult DARK KING paranormal/fantasy romance series focusing on the Dragon Kings and the women they love. This is the continuing story of Constantine, King of Dragon Kings, and his mate, Light Fae Rhiannon. HEART OF GOLD can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Rhi and Con) HEART OF GOLD focuses on Con’s red journals, journals in which he wrote his most intimate thoughts and professions of love for his mate Rhiannon. Thousands of years earlier, Con pushed Rhi out of his life, and in the ensuing time the guilt and grief consumed our story line couple. With their rekindling and second chance at their own happily ever after, Rhi finds Con’s journals, and embarks on a journey of love from the man she has never stopped loving, herself.
HEART OF GOLD is a story of heart break, reflection, acceptance and love. A quick look at one man’s thoughts about what was, what happened, and his need for the only woman that controls his heart.
The overall rating is the average of the following ratings. Also, this is a collection of previously released novella’s, not a brand new story.
Whisky and Wishes Series: Dark Kings #18.4 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
Finally free of the dangers surrounding them, Con, the King of the Dragon Kings, is ready for some peace and quality time with his mate, Rhi. While having Dreagan to themselves for a few weeks, Con and Rhi work out how they are going to deal with Death’s secret, the Dragon Bridge, and the holiday season.
This was a cute holiday novella. Con and Rhi are getting quality time to themselves and working through the big secret that Erith revealed to them in the previous book, Inferno. I like that we are seeing some big decisions being made together by these two. It shows how great of a couple they are and how good they will be ruling the Kings.
Rhi decides that a party and a holiday celebration is needed to celebrate their victories and all the matings. The holiday celebration seemed magical and I loved all the descriptions of the decorations, especially the trees and ornaments. I almost wish all the trees for each king was described but I know that would have been too much.
Overall, this was a great holiday novella. I am excited to see what is going to happen next with the dragon bridge and the kings being reunited with their dragons.
Heart of Gold Series: Dark Kings #18.6 Rating: 3 stars - I liked it
Con loved Rhi for eons and now they are finally back together. When Rhi finds one of Cons journals she realizes how much he suffered while they were apart. She decides to show him how much she loves him.
This was a short novella that was filled with love. We get to finally get a glimpse of the pain Con went through while him and Rhi were apart. The journal entries were very emotional but it has all worked out for them in the end. Their people are safe, the world is at peace, and they are finally together.
Hopefully in the next book they will finally get to see them meet their children. I can’t wait for that meeting.
Of Fire and Flame Series: Dark Kings #18.7 Rating: 3 stars - I liked it
This novella is basically the missing scene of Con and Rhi’s breakup. It’s told from Con, Rhi and Deaths POV so you get a sense of how everyone reacted, and how their feelings and thoughts impacted everything.
I have mixed feelings about this novella. So I should probably say that I have never been a fan of the Rhi and Con relationship. I did like their book, but I never imagined them as a couple while reading this series over the past few years. While this little novella is a nice little addition to have, I don’t think it was necessary for the series, especially since it does change events that happened in previous books.
Also, I still feel Con was being ridiculous in pushing Rhi away. He does it for the other kings but you know they would have kicked his ass if they knew that was the reason for it. They would have seen how stupid it was and stopped him from ruining their relationship, even if they were jealous of their happiness. They still would have supported their relationship and pushed him to be happy.
I think in the end, while it was nice of her to write this missing part of their story, I don’t think it was necessary. So this novella just gets three stars from me because while it is good for what it is, I don’t think it brought anything new to the series.

Whisky and Wishes Whisky Wishes brings Donna Grant’s beloved Dark Kings characters Con and Rhi past their separate pasts and hurts to come together and find happiness. This novella brings the reader up to date on the lives of these characters shortly after they defeat their enemy and reunite and have recently become mates. They’re also trying to figure out how to approach their children that they recently found out about. They’ll bring almost all of the Dragon Kings back to help the celebrate the holiday season and celebrate their recent victory over their enemy. With a friendship on the line and children to get to know they’ll try to find their way through the emotions connected with reuniting and the surprise of finding out about their grown children. This story also sets up the new Dragon King series that Donna Grant has wanted to write for a long time. Whisky Wishes sets the stage for the next wonderful series from this author, which will have fans and newcomers alike clamoring for the excitement and adventure these Dragon Kings will get involved in along with new characters and danger for the to face. A new group of characters and all kinds of colorful Dragon Kings.
Heart of Gold Rhi and Con’s story is updated in this short novella. Donna Grant updates their reconciliation with a Valentine’s story of how they’ve come to have so much love of each other. They may not have realized until now by the reading of a journal and revealing of feelings to each other. Rhi gets insight into Con’s feelings. Rhi makes Valentine’s Day special for Con. She helps him with facing the past and looking toward the future. If you’re a fan of Donna Grant’s Dragons and other series, you’ll anxiously want to read an update of the lives of the King of Dragon Kings and his mate Rhi. Donna Grant brings the reader back into the lives of her loveable, sexy and wonderful Dragon men and their mates or soon to be mates starting with Heart of Gold. Looking forward to reading more and coming to see these characters and how they’re dealing with their happy endings. Heart of Gold a must read for a Donna Grant fan!
Of Fire and Flame Donna Grant takes the reader back in time to show how three of her favorite characters lives become meshed together. They’re brought together because of betrayal, a hurt so deep that they don’t think they’ll survive. She takes you back to the beginning of how each character came to be in the lives they’re in when she started the series each is a mainstay in. Even though this is a later short story in the series it would be a great way to start the Dark Kings, Reaper and the whole Dark World. A great way to learn what these characters became into each other’s and how they’ll continue to become friends. Take a look back with Donna Grant’s short stories about Death, the King of Kings and a very powerful Fae. Of Fire and Flame a little look into the past to see what the future just may look like. A must read maybe even out of order to, so you see how it all started between Con, Rhi and Erith. Of Fire and Flame a wonderful look at the past.
Donna Grant’s A Dragon’s Tale combines her three most recent novellas into one book. These short stories bring her beloved characters update in their lives and a look into the past at how it all began. Whisky and Wishes and Heart of Gold update the reader on the life and love of the King of Dragon Kings and his mate. Of Fire and Flame takes the reader back in time to the very beginning of the relationship between Death, King of Dragon Kings and a very powerful Fae whose destinies are intertwined. A Dragon’s Tale shows how each character have affected the events throughout time and bring these loved characters to a conclusion fan of Donna Grant have been looking forward to from the beginning and how the whole thing got started all those millennia ago of her intertwined Reaper, Dark Kings series. A Dragon’s Tale an emotionally satisfying look into the lives of beloved characters as the look toward their futures.
This book is a collection of the 3 short stories in the Dark King's series and I would definitely NOT read it until after you have read Inferno as these all take place after that! It would definitely be a spoiler to read these first! With that being said, you get Whiskey and Wishes, Heart of Gold, and Of Fire and Flame all in one book with this!
Whiskey and Wishes is first and we get to see Rhi and Con finally happy and together! The other kings have given them time to be alone and just be together. They know they still have things that have to be resolved but they finally get to take some time to just BE! And I loved that! We get to see another side to them and how I imagine they were before everything that happened to them. And that side is beautiful. This is a short read, so be aware of that going in. But it is definitely well worth the read. And it helps to lead everything into the next book which I cannot wait for! What a way to tie everything together and lead into the new books!
Heart of Gold is the second story and it's a short, quick read where we get to see the way Con truly felt when he forced himself to let Rhi go. This is definitely a glimpse behind that calm facade that he always put forth for his King's and friends. It's heartbreaking just how much these two went through in the past, and how hard it is to move past actions from the past. But I loved how after Rhi gets to see how he felt, she helps him a truly beautiful way to know that the past is in the past. And together they have a beautiful future.
Of Fire and Flame is last and we see the point of view for Rhi, Con, and Death in this novella. I don't want to say a whole lot because, as I said, they would be a spoiler for previous books. And I definitely don't want to ruin anything for anyone still reading the series for the first time. What I will say, each person's POV is set up like their own mini book in this novella. And the first two completely broke my heart. Especially the first one. I read about what happened and knowing the reasoning and emotions involved? It's absolutely heart breaking. Death's POV showed exactly how much heart she really has, and the things that she will try to do to help not only the people she cares about but the world in general. I, personally, loved it. I loved getting their feelings and thoughts. I loved getting Con's thoughts on his decision, and knowing exactly how that truly affected him. And while some things didn't match perfectly with previous books, I am not one to take a book apart and kill it for something like that. There are a lot of books and stories involved, and I am going to be honest. I really didn't even notice them because I was so involved with the story and the emotions involved. I just read the book and remembered exactly why I love this author (and the series she creates) so much.
I love the fact that now these short stories are all in one, but I also love just being able to stay in this world that I have loved for so long! It's a perfect box set to take out and read when I want to immerse myself back into this world!
A Dragon's Tale (Dark Kings Book 22) is an anthology of three novellas that give past and present to two major characters in the Dark Kings Series by Donna Grant. I read the novellas as each one was individually published.
Whisky and Wishes gives a glimpse into the holidays with the couples of the past especially the King of the Golds and his mate. For the first time there is peace with no enemies making an appearance. What a joyous occasion for the Dark Kings, Reapers and loved ones at the Scottish castle. It feels as if the Dark Kings are making way for a new generation, setting up the stage for the new spin-off. Being story number nineteen in the series it is time. There is a new mystery concerning a missing King along with question about the children but nothing disrupts their holiday celebration. If you have been following the series you will loved the peace and harmony in this novella. I did. If you are new to the series there will most likely be some questions.
Heart of Gold is a great book to see inside of Con’s head all the time that Rhi and he were apart. It is labeled as Dark Kings #18.6 so it is more of an insider’s look than a full-fledged story. The February novella helps connects the dots in Con’s choices.. No big conflict, but it does set up the way for a future story in the end. I am not sure that a new reader could fully appreciate the significance of the Red Journal, Rhi and Con’s relationship now or even Ulrik being at Dreagan without knowing the past. What this will do for a new reader is entice them to start at the beginning of the series. For fans like me, this bridges the former to the new way that Rhi and Con are together.
Of Fire and Flame is another story looking at the past concerning the Dark Kings. Donna Grant has done a marvelous job filling in the background of the characters Rhi and Con. Inferno gave many reveals and revelations of the couple. Of Fire and Flame gives many of the how it all happened. For that reason I would highly suggest reading the Inferno first. In fact, having read the series in order, I would suggest doing the same but that is twenty books to tackle for a new reader. Told from the POV of the three main characters in this story helps the reader understand where the characters are coming from. Clearly all questions are not answered but enough to satisfy me concerning Rhi and Con together. Many books earlier I had eliminated Con as the Dark King that broke Rhi’s heart. Of Fire and Flame help to reconcile all. Novelette in length this is the answer needed.
4.5 Stars because a new reader may feel lost. For readers who have been following the series like me, this is a 5 stars inside look.
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
If you haven't read the latest three novellas in the Dark Kings series, here's your chance to get all three.
Whisky and Wishes Heart of Gold Of Fire and Flame
Whisky and Wishes
First if you are not up to date with the Dark Kings series this novella does contain significant spoilers and I'd recommend reading the previous books if that sort of thing bothers you. Per the author 'Whisky and Wishes' is a bridge to the spin-off series due to release in January 2021, starting with 'Dragon Revealed.'
Constantine is the King of the Golds and of all the Dragon Kings and Rhi is his wife. After a long separation they are back together, making up for all the time they lost and trying to deal with the big reveal about their children. The other Dragon Kings have left to give them privacy but they quickly realize it isn't the same without everyone.
This is a lovely holiday novella, filled with love, bringing so many beloved characters together under one roof to celebrate the holidays and the love they have for each other. They may have big decisions to make and challenges to face but they know they can face them together.
Heart of Gold
It took a long time for Constantine, King of the Dragon Kings and the Light Fae, Rhiannon 'Rhi' to get their happily ever after.
This is the perfect Valentine story for this couple as Rhi reads Constantine's red journals that pour out his love and anguish for pushing her away. As these two revisit the past, his journals are filled with beautiful heartfelt and heartbreaking emotions.
Just a few of my favorites between them: 'You touched not just my heart but also my soul. As no other has.' 'You've seen the ugly parts of me. And despite them, you still love me.' 'You are all that I need, all that I want. You're all I'll ever ask for.'
This whole novella is a beautiful valentine. I loved every moment and highly recommend it. If you haven't read their story, you're going to want to the entire series after reading this one.
Of Fire and Flame
Constantine is the King of the Dragon Kings. He never imagined he'd sacrifice his heart for his Kings to continue to keep going on.
Rhiannon is light fae and one of the queen's guards. She will never love anyone like she loved Con. When he walked away from her without explanation it almost killed her.
Constantine and Rhi had a great love until suddenly he ended things with her by sending one of his Dragon Kings to deliver the blow. He never told her he had to do it to save his Kings.
This short novella shares their profound love and loss and gives insights and spoilers to their history if you haven't read their story yet.
Wow this is an amazing collect of three fantastic novella's.. each novella is an eye opener into these fantastic characters and what they have experienced. The emotions and hardships. Each novella is a must read and what more can you ask for then all three in one book..
Whickey and Wishes Whiskey and wishes was a great Christmas Novella that gets you in the spirit for the up coming season... this was a great book that brought all our favorite characters together and has given you a little heads up on what's to come.. Rhi and Con had Dreagon manor all to them selves for acouple weeks but they relalize it's great that all couples got to have time away but all together is what makes Dreagon Manor home and alive , for all dragons and their mates to gather. Both Rhi and Con learn to let go of the past and look forward to the future.. to not dwell anymore on what happened or could have been. But both know they need to do something and find away to see their children . This is a fantastic read, page turner, wanted more but love what I got...
Heart of Gold Rhi has found one of Con's red journals which he left out for her to find. The journal entrees give the idea of how Con felt about Rhi when they could not be together, gives an insight of the love and feelings he had towards her. This book gave a little insight of what Con gave up for his brethren, the hardships of being "The King of Kings". This really was an incredible short read, a true love like no other, wanted more , and could not put it down... This was an eye opener on the love and the past of these two characters.
Of Fire and Flame I highly recommend this short read, its a page turner, and I could not put it down. I wanted to learn more about what has happened behind the scenes....
Heart wrenching to read about the pain both characters experienced and the choices Erith has had to make. Donna Grant is such an amazing writer the reader feels and experience's the same pain. This short read these characters experience so many emotions grief, resentment, pain, heartache, revenge, loneliness, love, loss and so many more. This is such a great read, it is an eye opener into these amazing characters and help the avid reader understand what has helped transpired these actions and choices they made.
This book gives the In-depth look into the emotions, heartache, the pain both Rhi and Con went through when Con broke up their relationship. Rhi was confused cause she was never given a reason why he broke it off. Con felt guilty that he had to send someone else to break off their relationship, he knew he could not go through with it if he tried to tell Rhi. This short read also gave the reader an idea of what Erith went through and why she made the decisions she had made.
Happy Holidays, the red journals and the day it all changed This book consists of three shorter stories. These stories from Donna Grant gave her loyal readers insight into characters whose story “ended” but is never really over. First up is Whisky and Wishes. After all the dangers the Kings and their mates have faced, it was great to just get to see them enjoy some down time around Dreagan. The other Kings and mates wanted to give Con & Rhi some alone time, but Dreagan was meant to be home to all the Kings. Both Con & Rhi need their family around and what better way to celebrate all they have been through then to throw a holiday party. Next, we have Heart of Gold. For all of his eons on this Earth, Con has recorded his thoughts in journals. He has two sets - brown ones to record events involving the Kings, Reapers and other supernatural beings and red ones to record the torture of living without his mate. The red ones were never meant to be read and most of them were destroyed by Con himself in a fit of anger and despair. Rhi finds one of the red journals sticking out from under the mattress. She can’t resist reading it to get insight into what her mate went through when they were apart. Since Con never does anything by accident, I believe he left the journal where Rhi cold find it to tell her all the things he couldn’t tell her for so long. And finally, we have Of Fire and Flame. We finally learn about the day that everything changed. We always knew how devastated Rhi was when her relationship with Con ended. Now we know what happened to her when she walked through that Fae doorway. We knew she was badly hurt, but not how she got hurt or how bad it really was. What we finally learn is how devastating breaking up with Rhi was for Con. The little cracks in his impeccable armor started when he had to push away the love of his life for the sake of his brethren. Many of us guessed Con was the one to find Rhi and now we know he had help in finding her. That help came from Erith who loved them both without either of them knowing that. We knew she took the twins but we learn why she had to keep them from their parents. Donna Grant has created a vivid world for her readers. She has been kind enough to give us these insights into these complex characters whose storylines intertwined long before we realized. As always, Donna Grant took us on an emotional ride and I am looking forward to what happened next.
Festive frolics among the inhabitants of Dreagan! I love this series and I'm on tenterhooks awaiting the offshoot series. Gimme more dragons I say!
This is a short, sweet, sext read featuring Con and Rhi. Now mated but still reeling from the revelations of Erith. Can they make it through the festive season on their own, with no other dragon kings around for support or interrupt? Will they decide what to do about the twins.
Rhi is determined that the Kings and their Mates all need something to celebrate, so Christmas is being done Rhi style! I'd kill for her to come decorate my house, the themes she chose were just so...perfect!
There are little breadcrumbs to entice you into the next book and I just hoovered them all up and my mind is now reeling with what could happen next! Superb writing as usual and a great bridge between the climax of Con and Rhi and the introduction of the Twins!
Heart of Gold
A short & sweet visit with Rhi and Con as Valentine's Day approaches.
We've all wondered what exactly Con had written in the Red Journals - well now we get to see inside one of them! When he "accidentally" leaves one of his journals where Rhi can find it, she learns just what he wrote about her during their millennia apart. Rhi really gets a chance to see the guilt, confusion, and grief that Con endured, all whilst she railed against him - although not without cause!
Rhi decides to show Con that all that is now behind them. It shaped them but it will no longer have a hold on them. Enter the most romantic, and sexiest, Scavenger Hunt ever!
Emotive, reflective and ultimately affirming the love these two characters have for each other.
Of Fire and Flame
Now there's a chance to fill in some of the blanks in Rhi, Con, and the twins backstory.
This short, informative read shows you the action from three very different perspectives - Con,Rhi and Death (Erith). We get to see what made them make the decisions they did, take their courses of action and forever link them together. Erith's I found most useful and interesting as it dealt with the aftermath of the twins.
This may be a short read but it's heavy with emotion and full of all the feels. You really should read the books in order to get the best out of the storyarc.
Loved this boxset of three previously released novellas. They are little "slices of life" featuring Con, Rhi, Erith, and other dragon kings. If you don't want spoilers, I recommend reading the previous books in the Dark Kings series before reading this boxset. ____________________________
*Whiskey and Wishes* Now that things have settled down a bit, Con and Rhi decide to celebrate the holiday season with the other Dragon Kings and the Reapers. The party is a huge success with everyone catching up and enjoying the down time. But Con's heart is a little heavy because a few of their people are missing the party. Where could they be? Is this just the calm before the next storm?
Fun and steamy holiday short story. I enjoyed it very much. Those Dragons really know how to party! LOL ____________________________
*Heart of Gold* A sweet and poignant novella featuring Con, Rhi, and Con's red journals. When Con leaves a journal were she can find it, Rhi knew she was meant to read it. Through the pages, she is able to get real insight into the man she loves and the struggles he went through when he chose to put the lives of all the Dragon Kings before his own happiness.
This story touched my heart. I just felt for both Con and Rhi and all they've been through. I enjoyed it so much, I only wish it were longer (as I always do when I really enjoy a book). Many thanks to the author for writing such a heartfelt short story. ____________________________ From the Red Journals... Con: "You whispered into my heart. You kissed my soul. And you showed me a love that I never dreamed could be mine." (le sigh) ____________________________
*Of Fire and Flame* Of Fire and Flame is the back-story (or prelude) to the Dark Kings. It tells the story of what happened between Con and Rhi, and the part Erith (Death) played in their history. It's novella in length, so it's not a long book but it packs an emotional punch. Do I agree with Con's reasons? Or Erith's interference? Not sure...but I enjoyed reading this story all the same. Armed with a box of tissue, some chocolate, and a glass of wine. 😉
Note: some deeply-entrenched readers may have found one or two timeline inconsistencies, but I wasn't bothered too much by anything. ____________________________
I received a copy of this book from the author via Bookfunnel. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor.
This book set features 3 short reads that are part of the dragon kings series; an awesome series! These stories are mainly from Con and Rhi’s POV’s, so I’d recommend at least reading their full book, so you get a better idea of what they’ve been through and felt. I especially enjoyed Whisky and Wishes and Heart of Gold! Of Fire and Flame is a tough one to read, but all the stories were wonderful! Love the kings series and the crossover series as well!
Whisky and Wishes
Love this sweet holiday novella with Con and Rhi, and all the other dragons and their mates! Told in Con and Rhi’s POV’s; we get lots of love and celebration! Some steamy goodness too! All the Christmas decorations sounded so wonderful! It’s nice to read more about Con and Rhi together and in love; so sweet and touching. They are also deciding on a few courses of action regarding their twins and the other realm they sent the dragons too. Entertaining and fun!! Glad to see most everyone happy and joyful!
Heart of Gold
Super sweet!! Love getting more about Con and Rhi! This is a short read that has Rhi reading some of Con’s passages in his journal about his feelings when Rhi and Con were separated. Just a touching read.
Grant is doing her darnedest to show that Con made the right decision by freezing out Rhi from his life; I still don’t fully agree with his choice, but I get it. My main contention with Con was the whole Usaeil thing; so disappointed in him about that, but I still really like Con. Con and Rhi are wonderful together. It does make me a bit mad and disappointed that the other Kings couldn’t handle one of their own being happy because of jealousy and such, so I still don’t think that reason is a good enough reason.
Overall, a wonderful read for anyone that has loved reading about Con and Rhi finding their way back to each other.
Of Fire and Flame
I think I would’ve been okay without reading this. It’s the POV’s from Rhi, Con, and Death when Con breaks up with Rhi. All sad stuff to me. Still an interesting short read that gives some background for past events. A better understanding behind Death’s actions with the twins; I’m really looking forward to reading the new series! I do appreciate getting more Rhi and Con too! Overall, a good read for any fan of Rhi and Con.
A Dragon’s Tale is a bundle of three Dragon Kings Novellas by Donna Grant.
Whisky and Wishes is a short novella that Donna wrote after her fans requested it during a FB Live session for the release of Inferno.Whisky & Wishes opens with Con and Rhi spending quality time with one another and settling into the next stage of their relationship alone at Dreagan Castle while the rest of the Dark Kings and their mates are off exploring the world before coming back to celebrate the holiday season. The novella focused on Rhi and Con moving forward in their relationship and making decisions on how to address the unexpected twist from Inferno. Heart of Gold is the 2nd novella from the Dark Kings. The novella opens with Rhi finding the one remaining Red Journal (Con destroyed the others) and reading it after being encouraged to do so by Ulrik while she's having a "me" day encouraged by Con. Throughout the series we saw the pain the Rhi felt about her Dragon King ending their relationship with no explanation. The Red Journal gives us a glimpse of the pain Con went through while also realizing that they were both miserable because of a decision that he made for what he felt was the good of the rest of the Kings. It shows you a side of the King of Kings that we hadn’t seen yet - the vulnerable and self-doubting side who realized that life without his mate was worse than he could have imagined. This was another step on the way for Rhi and Con to heal and overcome their past, while looking to the future with the Dragon Kings, the Reapers, and others. Of Fire & Flame is a prequel novella that’s part of the Dark King series. The story picks up on the day that Rhi finds out that the King that she intended to spend eternity with no longer wants to be with her, and how this one event impacted Rhi, Con, and Erith’s lives for millennia.
The novella is written in three sections focusing on what Rhi, Con, and Erith did in the immediate aftermath of the end of Rhi and Con's relationship. It also lays the foundation for future books in both the Reaper Dragon Kings spin-offs series that build out the lives of Erith, the twins, and Rhi and Con.
What a Great Way to share the short stories of our favorite Dragon Kings!! This bundle include three books by Donna Grant including Whisky and Wishes, Heart Of Gold and Of Fire and Flame. Each is a fantastic read that adds so much to not only the series but to the characters in the books as well.
Whisky and Wishes: Dark Kings 18.4 Whisky and Wishes is a very cute, spicy novella about Con and Rhi. As always, Donna Grant gives her readers a happy and joyful feeling via her fantastic books. Christmas at Dreagan was such a treat! I think this is the perfect way to bridge the Dragon Dark Kings series to all the goodness she has coming in her new books! Way to go!!
Heart Of Gold: Dark Kings 18.6 *Sweet Sigh* Con will forever be one of my favorite Dragon Kings! As the King of Kings; I was dying to get his story, and when I finally did, it was everything I could have hoped for. Alas, I wanted more, and lucky for me the Mother of Dragon herself felt like giving her reader just that. This sweet little novella is a glimpse into Con's famous red journals, and into how much he missed his mate. I can't say enough how much I loved this. Seeing Con, hearing his thoughts from the journals, it's a side to him that we don't see very much in the Dragon King books. To my fellow Dragon lovers, I hope you loved this as much as I did, Con and Rhi offered themselves and their stories up to share a little love.
Of Fire and Flame: Dark Kings 18.7 As an OG lover of Donna Grants Dragon Kings series, this was a sweet treat for me. I think readers have always wanted POV’s from all three of these characters, and now that we have them, it’s better than what I imagined.
Told from Con, Rhi and Erith’s point of views, this quick little novella is jammed packed with emotion. Told as a kind of prequel of the series, it also answers some long lingering questions for the die-hard Dragon fans. No matter the length of her books, Donna Grant never fails to deliver her all to her fans. Way to go!
All in all I love this bundle and not just because I’m a big fan of the series. Some authors chose not to do bundles for whatever reason, but I think it gives a reader a chance to really get a feeling for the author and what they are trying to build. I can’t wait to see what comes next!!
No danger, no flying orbs of flame and no blood spilled, finally they’ve reached a time of peace. What we see is a simple pure love story, Con and Rhi the way they were meant to be.
This story signals the end of a timeframe and yet a introduction to the next. Their dragons have been found. Some truths have been revealed about the past, and we see them struggle with how to handle what they now know. But, most of all their grown children aren’t willing to meet with them.
A Heart of Gold
A love letter, a very long heart felt love letter. Con’s red journals, are finally revealed. He didn’t destroy all of them. This one was meant for RHI to read. Con poured his heart and soul along with his love and anguish in his writings, over what he had done. A beautiful valentine read.
RHI found his red journal and while reading, she realized just how angry Con was with himself. So, RHI came up with a fun little plan to repay Con with a few notes of her own.
Of Fire and Flame
This novella gives us the opportunity to go back and see what we knew had happened. This book is broken up into 3 parts. In each section we are given the true and raw emotion of Rhiannon, Constantine and Erith, and what they endured.
First, we see the break up of Con and Rhi. That message was carried by Darius, “It’s Over”. This quick and short message shattered her heart. We then get a glimpse into how Rhi handles her loss.
That brings us to Con. We see his inner struggle with whether he did the right thing. To handle his distress and guilt, he shifts in to his dragon to fly, then sleep to try to ease his mind.
The third story is Erith, who we know as Death. Her part is crucial in not only saving Rhi, but also to save the children she is carrying, unbeknownst to both Rhi and Con.
This book was a heart clencher, you could almost feel their grief. It was a necessary book to experience their break up and how that formed them into who they are when they finally got back together. The only part I found distressful was the babies, and why as infants that were not much more than conceived, can refuse to be placed back in their mother.
Whisky and Wishes: We spent so long waiting for them to get back together. It was hurt after hurt, judgment after judgment, delay after delay, and up to Inferno I almost didn't want them to be together anymore. Except my heart yearned for them to make things work, and work they did.
And now we get to see them being sweet, sexy, and truly settling in to their rediscovered and rekindled love. I will admit, it's a bit quiet without the other Dragon Kings, but I think, out of any couple, Rhi and Con need and deserve some time to themselves where they can do and say all the things that will reforge their bond. I loved this short addition to the Dragon Kings' world.
Heart of Gold: I wasn't sure at all if I wanted these two to be together...until they were. And when the red journals came up in the series I was insanely curious and my heart needed to know what he wrote. As the King of Dragon Kings, what feelings, thoughts, yearnings can't see the light of day because of his position and at the peril of his own heart?
The way Rhi responded to the things she read was sweet and really helped me to see, again, that she needed to read his turmoil if only to find humility and a way to help him heal all the hurt he caused himself for the good of the entire Dragon Kings. This was a really good way to continue the bond building that's necessary to fix what was broken for hundreds of years.
Of Fire and Flame: Some readers love the angst. With Rhi and Con there was just so much over the ages and through every interaction until book 18 of the series that I felt I'd had quite enough angst, thank you, to last me an eon with these Kings. But what we got was more than just angst and a chance to satisfy the morbid curiosity of some readers.
We see the end of Rhi and Con's initial love. We see Erith's interference. We see a future laid out that will not be an easy road, nor a quickly resolved one. For a very short story this one packs a punch, though I will say that it also doesn't really contain as much as you'd hope for with the price or this author. I think it was merely a bridge between things that happened and things that will lay the foundation for the new Dragon Kings series coming.
This is an anthology of three novellas centered around Con, the King of Dragon Kings, and Rhi, a powerful light Fae. A Dragon’s tale includes: Whisky and Wishes, Heart of Gold, and Of Fire and Flame. This one needs to be read after Inferno, as that is Con and Rhi’s full story and this take place afterwards. Below are my reviews for each novella.
Whisky and Wishes: If you have not read Inferno then wait to read this one or there will be spoilers. This book picks up where Inferno left off. Rhi and Con are dealing with everything that Death told them, while the other Kings are spending time with their mates, or off on some much needed down time. I loved this cute Christmas story and was glad that Donna Grant gave it to us. It was the perfect bridge to the next “series.” While the series is changing names it will still be the Dragon Kings we love.
Heart of Gold: Finally we get a glimpse into Con’s red journals. I loved Inferno, but these small novellas about Con and Rhi add so much more to their love story. I can’t wait to see what happens next for the Kings and the mates.
Of Fire and Flame: I am going to address the issue when it comes to this book first, because I want my review to be honest. If you remember every detail of every Dark World/Dark King book, you may have an issue with this one. Are there some inconsistencies? Yes. Honestly this doesn’t bother me as much as it does some people. There might be something that was in one book that isn’t in this one, or the timeline might be off. If you take Of Fire and Flame as it’s own story you will enjoy it. I sure did. Of Fire and Flame is about a moment in time. It follows Con, Rhi and even Erith following Con ending his relationship with Rhi. As bad as it is I loved watching Con’s heartbreak. For so long he was the stoic leader, in this story you see his pain. Rhi will always be on of my favorite characters so getting to go through the event through her eyes was a real treat. Now since I am being totally honest, I was very mad at Erith after Inferno… I am still pretty mad at her for what she did, but this gave insight that lessened my anger towards her some.
Con and Rhi are together again. Dealing with the aftermath of truth bombs, Rhi is trying to find a bright side and decides to throw a holiday celebration. The level of Christmas she is at is what I aim to be!
Having some major alone time, as well as the other Dragon Kings, has given Con and Rhi time to be together and figure out their next step with their twins and the dragons. They are working through their feelings for each other, towards Erith, and what their future may bring.
They are VERY lovey dovey in this and it totally alters my perception of them. They aren’t the bickering people we knew. It makes me a little queasy to be honest. But this short story is a perfect set up for what the next part of this world will bring
*Heart of Gold*
This was such a cute short story, and I mean short, that made me feel so much better about Con and Rhi being so lovey dovey towards each other.
I’m still so very used to them being at each others neck that hearing them use terms of endearment weird me out.
This gives us a glimpse into Con’s life after he gave up Rhi and how he dealt with his emotions. From Rhi reading his words to Con reliving past memories of them. It was such a refreshing take on Con and makes you really appreciate him.
I was team Con from day 1 and I knew he had it in him for redemption so those of you who are still skeptical, I think this one will definitely help you out!
*Of Fire and Flame*
This is more of a 3.5 for me. It wasn’t awful at all but it wasn’t something I absolutely loved.
This novella is split into 3 sections for Rhi, Con, and Erith to share their views on the events that truly tie them together. The day Rhi went into the dying Fae world and was attacked and almost lost her life.
Each section is highly emotional and while I appreciate “seeing” what happened and how each handled it I could have gone without it all the same.
The only section I truly wanted was Erith’s because I wanted to know what she did and what she was thinking throughout it all. It explains more and makes me forgive a little better!
Donna Grant is an exceptional writer, who captures your interest in each of her books from page one and this book does not disappoint. The three stories in this bundle are a continuation of her Dragon series and a must read. This is an exceptional value as you get three stories in one edition and each one is a great read.
Whiskey and Wishes As with all her books in this series, Donna Grant once again writes a great story and what a great holiday story it is bring together the characters in her dragon series. What a great way to end one series and start the next. Love how Con and Rhi have there forever and how all the characters from the series are united for a holiday celebration. It is also a teaser for the next book and a look into future stories. If you are a fan of Donna Grant and her dragon series or if you are just reading Donna for the first time, this book is a must read. Although it can definitely stand alone, I would highly suggest you read the series so you can truly appreciate this book.
Heart of Gold
This is a short novella that continues the story of Con, King of Dragon Kings and Rhi his mate. It is Con’s words written in his journal about the time spent apart from his mate and love, Rhi. Love is everlasting, even when apart and this book shows the love both Con and Rhi had and continue to have for each other. I’ve read all the books in this series, but I now have to go back and read them again and there are insights I missed. A truly enjoyable book and perfect continuation of the saga. This is a must read if you are a fan.
Of Fire and Flame
Once again Donna Grant has excel. This book is quick to read and if you have read the Dark Kings series, this book gives you insight into the beloved characters of Con, Rhi and Death and closes some loops. But if you have not read the Dark King series, this book is a great start as it makes you want to learn more about these characters and their stories. When a book brings out your emotions, you know the writer has succeeded, and that is exactly what will happen when reading this book.
Constantine and Rhi, are one of my favorite couples and they are finally mated. It was sweet, the couple was able to get some well-deserved alone time. It was also great to have the Dragons Kings (Mated and Unmated), together celebrating the season. As always, there is quite before the storm. The happy couple has some very big decisions to make that will not only affect them but all of the Dragon Kings. This was a quick enjoyable read that is a gateway to DRAGON REVEALED. Thank you, DG for our Christmas treat.
Of Fire and Flame:
This Novella is from Con, Rhi and Erith’s POV. What an emotional read! I have always loved Con’s Character. Although, at times, he seemed to be hard and uncaring, but we now know that couldn’t be further from the truth. Con did and said what he felt was right, for his Kings. He is the perfect King of the Dragon Kings. The break-up of Con and Rhi was heart wrenching, from both of their POV’s. My heart especially, went out to Rhi, who was confused and devastated from the loss of her Love. It is so good to know that they finally get their HEA, but their journey was an Emotional Nightmare. We also get a better understanding of why Erith, made the decision she made. If you are new to Donna Grant’s Dark Kings, please do not start with this Novella, it is a part of a much larger series, which begins with Dark Sword. For those of us that are familiar with this series, bring tissues and a glass of wine, before you start reading. I highly recommend this series, as well as this Novella.
Heart of Gold:
This quick read will leave you emotionally drained…In a good Way!!! If I was not in love with Con and Rhi, before, this little tidbit sealed the deal. The novella helps you to understand why Con made certain choices and how those choices impacted him, as a Dragon without his Mate. As always, Rhi was AWESOME. Although the end came way too soon, I highly recommend this addition to the Kings saga.
What a great holiday novella featuring my favorite couple, Rhi and Con! It was great to be able to spend more time with them as a couple after the long road they suffered. Can't get enough of this couple! Donna Grant writes this novella as she does all her books, with a huge heart and a huge talent. I am so invested in these characters, and just when I think I can't love them more, Donna Grant's writing proves me wrong. I always love them more! This series is beyond phenomenal, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a series filled with romance, action, epic love and of course, DRAGONS! I can't wait for what fun the Dragon Kings and the twins have in store for us in the next novels. Until then, I'm going to read this novella again. Con and Rhi! Enough said!
Heart of Gold
Rhi and Con!! The red journals! Squeee! Rhi (and the readers) finally reads what Con has been writing in his red journals all these years. These red journals give us insight into Con's suffering without Rhi which leads to Rhi returning the favor in her love letters to Con. Their love story is beautiful, and at times heartbreaking, but ultimately the best HEA! I am biased since Rhi and Con are my favorite couple but this love story is so romantic! I love the way Donna Grant is able to bring back elements from her other books and answers questions longtime readers have been waiting for yet still make this a love story that can stand on its own for new readers. As always, I eagerly look forward to the next book in the series.
Of Fire and Flame
This novella revolves around the same events but from three different perspectives from three of my favorite characters. It is absolutely heartbreaking to read all the circumstances that have led them to where they are today but knowing that there is a HEA down the road for Rhi and Con helps with the pain of this novella. This nicely sets up everything for the Dragon Kings series and fills in the missing pieces of past events involving Rhi, Con, Erith and the twins. Once again, I can't wait for the next book!
This is the bundle of three novellas about the Dragon Kings by Donna Grant. If you haven’t read Whisky & Wishes, Heart of Gold and Of Fire and Flame individually, they are now bundled together.
In Whisky and Wishes, after so many years apart, Con and Rhi get to spend some alone time at Dreagan, but it gets to be too quiet. They think it would be nice, after everything that has happened lately, to enjoy a Christmas type celebration with all of the other Dragon kings, their spouses, and other allies. I especially love the humorous interaction that sometimes occurs between the characters as it does a bit in this book. During their celebration, they find they have more questions than they do answers about the new realm and what it would mean to go there. Plus there is a dragon king that is missing from the party and they can’t reach him. Where is he and could he be in trouble? This story helps to bridge the Dark King series with the new Dragon King Series.
In Heart of Gold, Con’s red diaries contain his thoughts and feeling for Rhi while they were apart. Rhi comes across one of these diaries and reads it. She realizes that he suffered in a different way than she did and decides to create a little Valentine’s scavenger hunt for him to show him her love. It is a touching story, especially for those that love Con and Rhi.
Of Fire and Flame tells the viewpoints for three different characters in the Dark King Series, Rhi, Con, and Erith, who is also known as Death. Although Rhi and Con have had their happily ever after, there was a time when Con broke off his relationship with Rhi for reasons he believed were necessary as the king of all the dragon kings. Both Con and Rhi each dealt with their own emotional heartbreak that they did their best to hide from everyone. Erith is also part of this story because she interfered with the twins that came of that relationship without anyone knowing about it. It was a good story and I am looking forward to more in the new Dragon Kings series.
They are all great stories and I highly recommend this book.
A compilation book of Rhi and Con’s story that neatly packages three previously released novellas into one book.
WHISKY AND WISHES is a novella story about Rhi and Con. It is a short and sweet holiday story that bridges the Dark Kings series and the upcoming Dragon Kinds series. It provides some insight into the relationship of Rhi and Con. I would recommend WHISKY AND WISHES.
HEART OF GOLD is a novella that is a short story of the King of Golds, the King of Dragon Kings, Constantine and his Mate. During their long (very long) separation, while Con’s Mate was believing that she was forsaken by her King, Con was writing about his feelings and his love for his Mate in diaries. Red, leather covered diaries that held all of Con’s anguish, longing and love for his Mate. Though it was thought that Con had destroyed all of the red diaries, one lone diary survived, only to be found by his Mate. After reading the diary, Con’s Mate devises clues placed around the Distillery for him to follow to find her. I thoroughly enjoyed HEART OF GOLD and wished the story was longer (though this is the third story regarding Con and his Mate, with one novel and another novella previously released). While reading the novella, you will run the gamut of emotions, happy, sad, love, and back to happy. A wild ride, but definitely worth it because Con and his Mate have worked through and earned their happiness and forever. I would recommend HEART OF GOLD as the icing and cherry on the cake of Con and his Mate’s love story.
OF FIRE AND FLAME in the Dark Kings Series (Book 2) is a novella that gives the perspective of a certain point in time in the Dragon Kings story through Constantine, Rhi and Death. It is nice to see each person’s perspective given within the same book, instead of across the different series of books that all these characters are part of. It is an emotional time, and you will probably need some hankies when you read this novella, but it is worth it. I definitely recommend this book if you love stories about dragons and the women they love.
I’ve read these novellas previously but love that they are bundled together now. Here are my precious reviews:
Of fire and flame
I’ve been reading this entire series and I love every single one. However, things end up getting twisted or skewed along the way. (Donna has mentioned she doesn’t plot her books and maybe that’s why) From the very beginning, I’ve always said it had to be a big enough reason for Con to break things off and to add salt to the wound not do it himself. I’m sorry but in my opinion it’s not enough. I understand his reasoning but they could have worked it out. Another concern I have is that throughout the series it was mentioned that the fae door she went into was one that no one ventured into, to go inside is certain death. Obviously, that wasn’t the case. Yes, she was harmed but I feel like it had to be written that way. Rhi even said fae come and go all the time. I think it would have made more sense if it was a completely different realm. Things just don’t add up. Those are my thoughts anyways.
Other than that, I think this is a great addition to the series. I loved reading each POV. You’ll have to overlook some mistakes though. I hope we get more like this in the future but maybe ones that help connect the missing pieces regarding the Kings mates. So many questions still remain that I hope get answered.
Heart of gold
I love that we get a glimpse into the red journals that we’ve heard so much about. It was a quick read but absolutely perfect. I’ve known Con and Rhi were mates since pretty much the beginning and I’m glad we get to read more about them. One book just didn’t seem like enough.
Whiskey and wishes I absolutely loved this short story with Con and Rhi. It was an added bonus that we definitely needed this year. I honestly hope this becomes a tradition. For a moment I thought for sure we were going to meet the twins but at last we shall have to wait.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A Dragon’s Tale is a collection of three novellas about a couple of characters fans of the Dragon Kings have all come to love. Con and Rhi, star crossed lovers who have been through h—l and back and are finally looking for their happily ever after. These engaging short tales share a bit of their present, reveal more of their past and hint at their future. Highly recommended for any fans of our Dragon Kings.
Whiskey and Wishes 5/5 This little holiday themed novella is #18.4 in the Dark Kings Series and reads best as part of the series. Picking up after Inferno, this tale asks the questions we all have been dying to voice. While we get some answers, we are left with several unanswered queries. This book is a transition between the Dark Kings and the upcoming series Dragon Kings and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next! A nice quick read with a lighthearted feel.
Heart of Gold 5/5 Ever wondered what Con’s red journals contained? What emotions he revealed in he private confessions? The little hints we received throughout the series did little to prepare us for the depth of emotions we find in this novella. It takes us on a rollercoaster ride from agony to ecstasy and everywhere in between. Thank you for this glimpse into the soul of our Golden King and his lady love.
Of Fire and Flame 4/5 This short prequel novella fills in the gaps and reveals details the other books missed. Here we finally get to see what really happened so long ago when Con shattered Rhi’s heart. All the little pieces we remember from each of the Dark King tales will finally make complete sense. It is a very emotional read told from the point of view of all three of the main players in this traumatic event. A very quick read with all the angst you would expect to find. Just wish it had a little more ....
Whiskey & Wishes by Donna Grant is a closure novella featuring Con and Rhi. It takes place over a short few weeks in December. After thousands of years apart, the couple get a much needed romantic staycation at Dreagon. While it’s heartwarming to peek in on their love fest, there is not real plot to follow. It does, however, set the stage for the new series. A Dragon King has gone missing, the King’s face a life altering decision and a new realm with countless possibilities is unfolding.
Heart of Gold by Donna Grant is a novella set in Donna’s world of the Dragon Kings. For centuries Constantine has lived without his mate. This is a tale that reveals what that life was like by giving us access to Con’s last remaining journal. He pours his heart out in it, page after page. If I know what love is, it’s because of you. As his fated mate finds the journal and reads it, it will both break your heart and cause tears of joy. It’s a sentimental glimpse into the heart of the King of Kings.
This title, Of Fire and Flame, along with the last novella Heart of Gold are novellas set in the world of The Dragon Kings. They are designed to give us the back stories of the main characters in the series. I am not a fan of these novellas, especially as they are just backstories with no plot. I would have preferred to have the backstories within the context of the novels themselves. Now I understand that authors may not have all the ideas at the time of the novel. I get it that characters sometimes reveal these tidbits at a later date. If they are important to the ongoing plot lines, I would prefer to have them be part of the next novels. They can be flashbacks or segments revealed through another character, but as stand-alone books, they are unfulfilling. It’s nice to know some of the backstories, but they feel disjointed and lack a plot line.
