An invitation to experience more fully the life-changing power of sacred silence
For over a decade, J. Brent Bill's Holy Silence has been regarded as a contemporary classic on sacred silence. With warmth, wisdom, and gentle humor, Bill presents the Quaker practice of silence and expectant listening to a wider Christian audience.
Brent Bill is a Quaker minister, photographer, and author. He is the author of many books and magazine articles. He lives in rural Indiana on Ploughshares Farm -- a wildlife retreat with woods and native prairie.
...But kept reading because of the content. Brent Bill has given us non-Quakers an excellent introduction in the holiness of silence. After reading this book I am certainly no expert on the Friends' practice of waiting in silence, but I have had my appetite whetted to know more. Bill includes a wonderful list of resources for those like myself, who are not particularly interested in leaving their own faith practices, but who are drawn to the while idea of being quiet and still before God to sense His Presence and know He is near. I will be looking for more of Brent Bill's work!
This is a church-y book and one written for Quakers, not a general audience. If you don’t equate God and Jesus, this isn’t likely a book you will enjoy as much as I suspect those who do would. I nonetheless gave it four stars because I could see how a Quaker of a heavy Christian/well-read of Bible slant might find the book of great value to their faith. Many of the silent practices are more universally applicable I felt and worth finding toward the back of the brief text.
