Winner of NINE awards including Winner in Fastasy in the Book Excellence Awards (2022) and the Book Fest Awards (2023). Also won second place for Debut Author in the Feathered Quill Awards (2022).

Pain is inescapable. Suffering is a choice.

Azrael, the Angel of Death, knows pain. The deaths of his mother and sister, as well as his harsh experiences in the Watch Guard at age twelve, have brutally shaped him into the most feared assassin in all of Pandaren. Azrael’s role as a Hunter requires him to search for those with magic, called Spectrals, which he is happy to do. Hunting allows him to pursue his true goal—exacting revenge on the Fire Spectral who altered the course of his life.

Azrael’s obsession with revenge and power leads him to undergo an experimental procedure that gives him magic, but when this procedure has unexpected and dangerous side effects, he becomes a liability to the Hunters and the Watch Guard. Rescued by the people he has sworn to eliminate, Azrael finds himself questioning everything he once believed as years of secrets and lies are exposed. His very nature is challenged as he battles unfamiliar emotions and navigates relationships that contradict the heart of a killer.

Can the Angel of Death have a conscience? Can Azrael?

Chasing the Darkness is an escape to a land of magic, sword fights, and love, with memorable characters who must face the darkness within and journey down a path of destruction or redemption.

Disclaimer: I was kindly #gifted an eARC of Chasing the Darkness by author Cassie Sanchez in exchange for an honest review.

First and foremost after binge reading a new series in a matter of two weeks I was put into a severe reading slump until I decided to pick up this book and it really did capture my attention from the get go and cured my book hangover! It comes as no surprise that this book also won the Finalist in Fantasy in the 2021 American Fiction Awards.

This book incorporated a number of my favourite tropes, such as slow-burn romance, intense enemies to lovers, found family, morally grey characters, an antihero you couldn’t help but fall for, magical elements, assassins and a MC with a new found identity and on top of that it was jam packed with action, adventure and plot twists.

Chasing the Darkness is Cassie’s debut novel and one would never make the assumption that it was. Her writing style is easy to follow and packs a punch with a number of important themes being addressed ~ such as asking the age old question of good vs evil, loyalty, trust, betrayal and friendship which leads to a beautiful found family and romance.

Okay so what is the book about? In short our MC, Azrael is also referred to as the Angel of Death, who of course just so happens to be a trained assassin. After the brutal deaths of both his mother and sister, he joins the Watch Guard at 12 years of age. His obsession with both revenge and power lead him to undergoing an experimental procedure which gives him magic, but in doing so also brings about dangerous side effects, as he now becomes a liability to the Hunters and the Watch Guard, someone who they are threatened by and are jealous of. He is betrayed by his very own people and is eventually saved by two individuals who he has been brought up to despise because of their very own magical abilities. Azrael starts to question everything he once believed as years of secrets and lies are exposed through his saviour’s eyes.

This book draws you in from the very first page, creating an immersive atmosphere filled with everything you need and love in a fantasy ~ assassins, betrayal, politics, revenge and magical battles to name a few.

Chasing the Darkness is being released Feb 1st and I highly recommend this beauty! Make sure you preorder!

Some of my favourite quotes include:
“Pain is inescapable. Suffering is a choice.”

“Compassion isn’t a weakness. It’s a gift..”

“Here it comes, the light chasing away the darkness”

Initial thoughts after finishing:
✩ Assassins
✩ Magical elements
✩ Found family trope (loved this!)
✩ Enemies to lovers trope

Thank you so much to the Author Cassie for an advance copy of this book! I am in awe of your writing and this book as a whole.

This book was the perfect book hangover cure I have ever came a crossed! Step inside a magical world where Spectrals and Naturals are at war and a Angel of Death find himself in the middle, with the biggest war of all ranging in himself.

A 5 star read for sure! No wonder this book took the crown in the American fiction Awards of 2021! It was AMAZING.

The author even adds a Pronunciation guide which automatically wants me to give plus a million stars.

“Pain is inevitable- suffering is a choice.”

Azrael ,Angel of death wants one thing: Revenge.Revenge on the Fire Spectral was his life, his mission, his purpose. Branded with loyalty, honor, and obedience on his skin he has been taught to hate and kill Spectrals all his life. That is until a mission of death goes wrong, and he is saved by two of those beings he loathes the most. As secrets are revealed and lies exposed, he has to face emotions even more powerful than revenge. And adopt an identity he is more terrified of than being the angel of death.

I finished this book in one sitting because honestly its just that good. A fast-pacing fantasy novel packed with action and powerful moments, accompanied with magic and romance that will have you shocked and intrigued. Our MC is morally grey as many(especially me) would prefer and he’s not a teenager- plus 5 stars! This typical anti-hero will slowly creep into your heart and you can’t help but root for him every step of the way.

Kord is by far also one of my favorite characters! He is such a cinnamon roll!

So to break it down, if you like any of the following this book is definitely for you:

✨Fantasy with a lot of action( made me think of TOG)
✨Found family trope
✨Enemies-to-lovers
✨Magic and elements
✨Tormented anti-hero
✨Assassins
✨New found identity
✨Fast-pacing with plot twists

Pain is inescapable. Suffering is a choice.

A story all about revenge and redemption. In Pandaren there are two types of people: those with magic (or Spectrals) and those without. The story follows Azrael, the Angel of Death. Obsessed with power and revenge, he undergoes a procedure that will give him magic…but at what cost?

This is a character-driven fantasy novel that fully immerses you into the world created by Cassie. It’s fast paced and full of twists and turns with magic, battles and wee bit of romance thrown in too.

With the underlying message that, “your past does not define your future”, this thrilling fantasy allows you to see the good despite the bad and become enchanted by the characters and their individual stories.

This was a beautifully written fantasy book , it was very easy to devour this book .

In this book we have Azrael , aka the Angel of Death, he has had to live through the deaths of his Mum and sister and the harsh experience of the Watch Guard at age 12 , this has shaped his to be one of the most feared assassins in Pandaren. He has an obsession with revenge against the people who killed his mother and sister , after an experimental procedure goes wrong, lies are unravelled and Azrael's nature is challenged , he has to battle everything he has known .

Azrael is such an amazing character to read about , even though he is the most feared assassin you still feel for him, having to go through so much you can see why he turned out the way he did ,he is a main character that you aren't going to forget in a hurry. He definitely makes this book so irresistible and keeps you going back too it. The world the author has created is painted vividly in the readers mind and draws you into it even more. If you are a fan of fantasy books I wound definitely recommend this book

I loved this book! I've seen reviews where they've either loved or hated Azrael, but I loved him. I thought the villain was great and the story was and world building was great too.

Azrael is a trained killer - The Angel of Death - fighting against those with magic in their veins to protect the "naturals", until 2 strangers come in to his life changing the world as he knows it.

I didn't think there was a character I didn't like (well the ones I didn't like were written well) and I loved the little twist at the end too. I did smirk and laugh at some of the lines too which I loved.

Betrayal, trust and friendship are major themes in this story and I couldn't put it down. If you are a fan of fantasy I would definitely give this one a read!

*Disclaimer: I was kindly gifted an electronic copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

"Here it comes; the light chasing away the darkness. What would she think about her son becoming darkness in his quest for justice?"

It's hard to believe that Chasing The Darkness is Cassie Sanchez's debut novel but it's no surprise that it won the Finalist in Fantasy in The American Fiction Awards of 2021. From a stellar cast of characters, enemies-to-lovers trope and magical abilities, this book will have you strapping on your armour and picking up your sword to battle alongside Azrael, the Angel of Death. Formed by pain, Azrael is focused on his mission, to kill all Spectrals, but along the way, everything changes and he doubts himself and what he has become. Being betrayed by his own people, he needs to make a choice.

"Anger and rage were acceptable, but not fear, regret, or sorrow. Those were not an option, especially for a Hunter. An assassin with a conscience was a liability."

This choice leads him to meet Kord and Kenz, brother and sister but also Spectrals. Azrael has been fighting against Spectrals for his whole life and now he finds himself in the company of them and might even like one. Is there a promise of romance for this morally great character or does his hate consume him and leave him in darkness? Kenz is my favourite character, she is a fire that can't be easily tamed.

Add some magic and fighting scenes and the adrenaline runs through the readers' veins as the story unfolds. Shocking twists change the direction of the story and the reader is left on the edge of their seat. A pronunciation guide is included which immediately makes me comfortable reading the book because I can actually pronounce the names with ease and it doesn't affect my reading pace. For those who love maps, a map of Pandaren is included and it adds to the authenticity of the world.
I enjoyed this story from the first page to the last.

But when he is forced into the world of his enemies, his secrets are revealed and he must decide who he wants to become. Characters and plot lines twist and turn at breakneck speed. We are swept up in Azrael's adventures and applaud his growing humanity. Cassie Sanchez has accomplished quite a feat; she has created a unique and compelling fantasy universe.

Hi! Chasing The Darkness by Cassie Sanchez is a fast-paced fantasy book with everything you could ask for. It’s the first book in a trilogy.

Full of action, love and pain; this is probably the best book I’ve read all month. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, make you laugh, cry and feel for the characters!

Why you should read this book

*I’ll start off with the writing style. Simple, full of emotion, with amazing worldbuilding and well-timed humor; there was nothing I found to complain about. With lovable, amazing characters that have well-rounded personalities, this book is perfect for all fantasy lovers.

*Azrael had one of the best character arcs and I felt for him so much! This is an enemies to lovers story and ok, Azrael and Kenz were literally perfect together.

*I loved that there was no sexism in this book. Kenz and Azrael made such an amazing fighting duo. There wasn’t more angst or drama than what was required either. Reading miscommunication tropes with over-the-top hatred always irks me and I was so happy none of that was present here.

All in all, definitely recommended. Thank you to the author for the free digital ARC of this book to read and review!

This is the first book by the amazing Cassie Sanchez and what a debut novel this is, as she absolutely nailed it! This was a finalist in the 2021 American Fiction Awards for Fantasy! My favourite genre as you know.

If you love the work of Sarah J Maas but would consider it from a male perspective, then you are going to love this! I usually go for the kickass female lead, but this made me reconsider my potentially sexist ways. I have always gravitated to the female badass lead and I think it’s due to feeling like I can relate or most likely I have dreams I would be that awesome lol. Regardless I didn’t think I would connect or feel the emotions of a male lead as much. Well, Cassies writing floored me as I felt everything Azrael felt. His struggles, his emotional journey, his feeling of zero self-worth, his anger and his feelings of protection.

Trained to be a cold-hearted killer from the age of 12, Azrael does his duty in what he thinks is protecting the kingdom but is it? Driven by revenge, he is blinded to what is right and wrong. His mother and sister were killed by something called a Spectral. These are magic wielders and in the kingdom of Panderan, it’s his job as Hunter in the Watch Guard to kill or round them all up. Azrael is the most feared hunter and has no conscience. He is an assassin and a murderer with the name Angel of Death and is feared by all who possess Magic. He undergoes experimental treatment to give him magic, but the side effect is he experiences the emotions of the very people he has been hunting. This makes him a liability, so his Watch Guard team betray him, but he is rescued by the Spectrals, only how can they possibly trust the Angel of Death who has been terrorising their kind for years.

The writing is so amazing that my heart literally ached when these people wouldn’t trust him when he is so desperately trying to change but also, I completely understood where they came from. He has no self-worth and doesn’t think he is good or will ever be good enough for them.

In Panderan, people who have magic have been persecuted which is a tale as old as time as is people within power wanting more and wanting to illuminate those that can stand against them.

Thank you, Voracious Readers and Cassie Sanchez, for the chance to read in return for a non-biased review. I truly loved it! This is an epic high fantasy romance that can’t be missed. Top Marks 5/5

Pain is inescapable, suffering is a choice

Set in the Kingdom of Pandaren, Cassie Sanchez weaves a fabulous fantasy tale about vengeance and redemption.

When the King is assassinated by a Spectral (a person with magic) all spectrals find them self hunted. Under the orders of Commander Drexus, the Watch Guard and elite Hunters, round up spectrals, imprisoning them to protect the naturals.
But the reader soon discovers Drexus, has more sinister plans for the prisoners.

Azrael, the Hunter’s prime assassin has vengeance running through his blood. He lives for the day he can assassinate the spectral who took the lives of his mother & sister.

When Drexus discovers a procedure to enhance Azrael into a stronger assassin -he jumps at the chance to fulfill his quest.
But the change brings unwanted emotions and more questions. Questions that lead to betrayal.

This entertaining fantasy tale really hooked me from the beginning, with its action packed fight scenes- yep I’m a bit bloodthirsty and enjoy a good battle. I’m also a sucker for the physical amplification trope, combine this with the emotional transformation and you have a satisfying combo.

I really enjoyed this redemption fantasy tale of a loner assassin. Azrael has only known pain and vengeance- however, as he gains insight, knowledge and importantly support, he can no longer be the Angel of Death.

There is a slow burn romantic element to the story which assists with character growth, but pleasingly isn’t reliant upon the romance for his transformation.
Take note my book friends who have requested a fantasy read with romantic elements but prefer less smut- this story ticks that box.

This book can be read as a standalone and has the feel of a completed work, with a couple hooks thrown out there for the coming second book.

Recommend to read if you love:
- Interesting magical abilities
- A Dastardly villain
- Atmospheric world building
- A questioning powerful Hero
- A Heroine who stands up for herself and others
- Battle/questing scenes
- All things blades & armour
- Enhanced (amped) beings
- A book title reflective of the character change.

In the Closet: A Triad” introduces readers to S. S.’s story is told in three parts (a triad). Part one discusses her relationship with her grandfather and his love for the piano player, Thelonious Monk. Part two discusses her relationship with her grandmother and her love for the poet, Emily Dickinson. Part three discusses her relationship with her mother and her love for the photographer, Diana Arbus. Each part also features S. at a different stage in her life. In Part one, she is 10. In Part two, she is 20. In Part three, she is 30.

S. is a strong character with strong role models; even the role models that left her to fend for herself. S. strives to find her own self and is influenced by her grandparents and mother, along with their role models. These relationships and their strengths are told mostly when S. is in her grandparents’ bedroom closet. S. goes to this closet when she tries to deal with whatever stress she is experiencing, mostly abandonment and death. S. also has a strong relationship with her best friend and eventual lover Sophie. The relationship between S. and Sophie is subtle and should not offend any sensitive reader. The main focus is S. and her relationship with her mother, or more importantly, the lack of a relationship with her mother.

Each part of the triad is told by S.’s point of view and interjected with information about Monk, Dickenson, and Arbus, respectively. After each interjection, S. is telling a different part of her story and then sometimes jumps back to present time with her in the closet and what she is feeling, touching, or smelling. This was very confusing to follow at times. Even though it is similar to how one’s own thought process sometimes occurs, this reader did not want to read like that and try to pick up on where S. was in her story. Does this way of telling S.’s story appear artistic? Yes, and that might have been what Gale was trying to accomplish.

Overall, “In the Closet” is an artistically scripted way of looking at an individual and how their life and relationships are influenced by each other and by known artists in different genres. This novel looks at music, poetry, and photography as the artistic genres that influence S. and her family.

I’ve always had a weakness for morally grey, complex characters and the main protagonist “Azrael” is all of that…and more.
.
Azrael lost his mother and sister at the hands of Spectrals…the people of Pandaren who possess magical powers. Since then he has sought revenge on them, leading to him becoming Pandaren’s most menacing assassin, the Angel of Death…instilling fear and hated in all who possess magic.
.
He is a “Hunter” second in command of the Watch Guard, an organization created to hunt and imprison Spectrals.
Azrael is betrayed and left for dead, only to be rescued by two Spectrals…the very people he's spent years hunting, killing and hating.
.
This is an enthalling and page turning fantasy filled with shocking, powerful tense moments…full of action, weaved with romance, suspense and intrigue.
Make no mistake this is a dark brutal world which vaguely reminded me of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones…books I have always loved.
Cassie is a brilliant storyteller…her prose is vivid and highly descriptive and her details of battles are riveting.
.
Azrael/Jasce is your typical tormented anti-hero who ends up slowly creeping into your heart…eventually becomes endearing. What I really enjoyed was reading a fantasy story told from a man's POV - most fantasy novels tend to be lead by POVs from strong female protagonists, I found this to be refreshingly different but every bit as gripping!!!
.
The strong supporting cast of Kord, Kenz, Drexus and Amycus helps to enchance the storyline and plot…turning this book into an unforgettable read. This is a strong start to a very promising fantasy series…I highly recommend it and can’t wait for the sequel.

I was interested in this story for the trope I sensed through reading the blurb, and won a hardcopy through the author's birthday giveaway on Instagram. Going in, my expectations for this book were very high.

It was well-paced with the perfect blend of action and internal character development and sweet moments between characters.

There were so many wonderful twists and turns, revelations, and betrayals.

Favorite moments: The name change. 💕👏🏽 The dinner and decision to move in with friends. The drunken admission of unworthiness.

CONTENT:
No swear words.
The word “sucks” was used once along with a slew of creative insults that made me giggle.
SEXUAL CONTENT: mild and tastefully done. Not explicit and then a fade to black. Sexual tension was well done and felt like it grew naturally into friendship. Character growth happened before the love interest began returning feelings.

Compassion, strength, and vulnerability were great themes. Choosing to not let the hunger for revenge allow the abuser to control the once abused.
Azrael was a very dynamic character. Even as he made his mistakes and believed he was unworthy and couldn’t change. I loved watching his friends believe in his potential. He learned that allowing ones self to suffer a bit will cause you to change. He stopped running from messy conflict and facing his problems.
I loved the Empath element of his magic. Combined with a shield magic wanting to protect him... So well done.

Could say so much more about the love interest and antagonists. Overall, this is a book I want to read again.
The writing style was a little simple at times—sometimes so much so I wanted more details.
This being Sanchez’s debut, I can’t wait to see what else she will write.

Chasing the Darkness is a well-rounded debut from Cassie Sanchez about vengeance and redemption.

The kingdom of Panderan is a realm haunted by Spectrals, magical wielders who assassinate the king. Knowing that the Spectrals don't want to fall in line and obey the rules laid down by the king, the general gets carte blanche to create a force that will keep them in check.

Flash forward seventeen years. Azrael is an assassin who has been trained since he was twelve. He is now second in command of the Watch Guard, an organization created to hunt or imprison Spectrals. However, a dark history haunts Azrael. He lost his mother and sister to a Spectral attack, making them low on his list of people to care about. Known as the Angel of Death and willing to do anything for the success of the Watch Guard, Azrael undergoes experiments to yield the same magic as the Spectrals.

When things go wrong, Azrael is betrayed and left for dead, only to be rescued by the very people he's spent years hunting and hating. The novel is filled with strife and struggle. Can the Spectrals ever trust Azrael? Can Azrael ever find peace and worth for the things he's done and the prejudices he's helped spread?

Cassie Sanchez spins a remarkable tale. The world-building is a success, and the good and evil characters are deliciously likable. There are times the writing feels understated and lacking, where a clever word or a touch more description would have brought the paragraph to life. It doesn't detract from the book, but it could have added even more magic to the already epic qualities within Chasing the Darkness.

If you like Sarah J. Maas, and don't need all the sexiness of her ACOTAR series, check out this debut from Cassie Sanchez.

Azrael's whole life has been defined by hate and revenge. Having perfected the art of death, Azrael becomes the deadliest of weapons in the war against the Spectrals, humans who possess magic in their blood. When the lust for violence becomes a quest for truth, Azrael must choose between who he has become and who he truly wants to be.

Thank you Cassie for sending this to the Everything But the Book podcast team!

This book wastes no time in throwing you into the plot. Honestly, it reads like a movie screenplay for the first 100 pages. Azrael is betrayed by the group he has trained with for years, rescued by his enemies, and faced with the revelation that his life is a lie all before 100 pages in. Faced with the horror of how awful his crimes are, Azrael turns to alcohol and bar fights to try and quiet his own emotions and avoid dealing with his sordid past. Probably the most realistic trauma-response in the world of fantasy.

The romantic tension between Azrael and Kenz started immediately, and then burned my soul for what felt like FOREVER. Kord is precious and must be protected.

The plot has an interesting mix of fantasy and science, with twists and betrayals constantly keeping you on your toes. It felt like there might have been some missing transitions between scenes and dialogue, but overall fast-paced adult fantasy read.

“They would sit in the early morning, watching the sky lighten, and she would wrap her arm around him, saying, ‘Here it comes; the light chasing away the darkness.’ “

CAPTIVATING from the very first page! Sanchez’s writing is so IMMERSIVE and draws you in quickly with a fast pace. Chasing the Darkness is an epic fantasy that follows Azrael, the second in command of the Watch Guard, hunters who are responsible for rounding up or eliminating Spectrals, those with either elemental magic or amplifiers. They are trained to feel no emotion, until the day the Angel of Death begins to.
This book is perfect for fans of Geralt of Rivia and Hunt Athalar. It is filled with assassins, magic battles, betrayal, politics, revenge, suspense, and slow burn romance. If you enjoy enemies to lovers and morally grey (all the way!) characters, this is your book!
The characters were very dynamic. I really enjoyed seeing Azrael's inner battle with his conscience and his development was incredible. The world building is excellent and I was completely enthralled by the magic system. I can't wait for the next one!
Chasing the Darkness drops Feb 1st and I highly suggest you pre-order now!!

Chasing the Darkness takes place in Pandaren where there are two types of people. Normal people without magic and Spectrals, who have magic.

This story follows Azrael, the main character, as he goes through a new procedure that gives nonmagical people, magical powers. However, there is a HUGE side effect, it gives him back emotions he has blocked out. Azrael is not only the second in command, but also a famous assassin, and these emotions are making him a liability. When Azrael is betrayed, his is rescued by an unfamiliar "friend". The very people he has spend his life hunting, are the ones who come to is aid. Bu what happens when everything Azrael knows and believes, turns out to be lies?

Cassie Sanchez does an AMAZING job with Chasing the Darkness. It captivates the reader with the twists and turns, magic, and romance. Who doesn't love a "redemption", "sacrifice", and "learning your worth" story?

Chasing the Darkness entertains readers who enjoy character-driven stories with twists and turns. Chasing the Darkness is a fast-paced novel with magic, sword fights, and romance that keeps readers turning the page. The underlying themes, besides redemption, include forgiveness, sacrifice, and learning that one’s worth is not defined by one’s past.

The first in a new fantasy series and I can't wait for book two!

I read this book as part of a promotional book tour and am grateful for the opportunity to do so.

I have been languishing in book hell, flicking between different books on my Kobo and unable to get into any of them. And then I found this... It's well paced and has (mostly) likeable characters (sometimes you want to punch the protaganist, and that's a good thing, because it means you want to see him succeed). The action is well-paced and pulls you into a new world without hitting you over the head with themes and descriptions. I couldn't put this down, and even enjoyed the romance, which was fun and not too chaste (I hate that!) and meaningfully contributed to the growth of the character. Can't wait for more.

So glad I saw this book on Bookstagram. I love a good magic/fantasy book. I love the enemies to lovers trope because of that saucy tension. I loved the characters (please let Kord live!! He’s the best!!) and the creative magic system. I really enjoy it when heroes (who you thought were enemies) emerge to save the day. The magic system was fantastic and the Moses complex was intriguing. You guys are KILLING me with these cliff hangers. So I will be eagerly awaiting Book #2.

This book was well paced, had a lot of action, hardly any downtime AT ALL, and, at times, butt clenching. If you are looking for a quick weekend read and you like fantasy, grab this book. I think you’ll enjoy it! But be warned… the story is not over. :)

Cassie Sanchez shows us that no matter what has happened to you, no matter how many times you’ve been lied to, no matter how many bad things you’ve done (and Azriel’s done a lot of bad things!), it’s never too late to change. He must learn that his past does not define him and that there’s power in friendship, love, and loyalty.

This book absolutely blew my mind!

Sanchez’s attention to detail in world building, character development and plot is fabulous! I felt like there were so many layers to each character and I loved seeing these layers revealed as the story progressed.

My favourite part of the book was the scenes between Azrael and Kenz. Enemies-to-lovers is one of my all time favourite tropes and Sanchez does a terrific job of pulling this off. This really kept me wanting to turn the page!

I also really loved how much Azrael changes by the end of the book. I feel that the group of characters he comes to see as his family play a huge part in this. Again, this draws me back to how well developed ALL the characters are!

It is not often you find a book that ticks all the boxes, but this ones absolutely did. I highly recommend this book to fantasy lovers!

What an amazing treat for fantasy lovers. Absolutely loved the story, characters and the phenomenal world building. I thought the magical system created by the author is a major plus point for the story.

We follow the story of Azrael, also known as The Angel of Death and he's an assassin. From the start to finish this book is a page turner and loved the twist at the end.

This is definitely a captivating fantasy read filled with action, romance and suspense. The writing style and the world building is simply remarkable and I really applaud the author's creativity. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Pretty fun read. The assassin hero finds his heart, falls in love, and learns the truth about his long-murdered family. Plenty of action, a few spicy scenes, and a really tidy ending that opens the door for a sequel. For those interested in prose, it's quite plain and straight forward but it suits the novel's tone. The lady love interest doesn't have much substance - she is defined purely by her hotness, the existence of her brother, the death of a fiance, and her anger. Classic female-lead-in-an-action-story, I guess. And the villain relies on the oft-used super soldier serum trope. BUT. Readers will love that Jason Momoa is a perfect fancast for the main character. From cover to cover, it felt like this novel was written for him to play the lead. Definitely worth a look if you're in the mood for a swords-and-magic adventure!

Intriguing and dark read. It gave me slight feels of ACOTAR minus the sexiness.

I’m slowly starting to really enjoy fantasy and supernatural things but I do take my time to get into it.

Azrael is a strong minded character who knows what he wants but he’s very stubborn.

I definitely feel it was left on a cliffhanger and I’m intrigued to find out what happens next.

Thanks to Cassie for allowing me a copy of this book and to @instabooktours for allowing me on your tour.
