Morgan Greene grew up in Wales, and works a copywriter, editor, and author. Morgan studied Creative Writing and English Literature at Swansea University with a focus on narrative structure and theory, and published the first crime novel in the Jamie Johansson series in 2020. Since its release, the series has gone on to reach bestseller status, with Detective Jamie Johansson quickly becoming a reader favourite.
The series blends classic Scandi-noir elements with modern and cinematic thriller writing to create a unique style that adds to the emerging Brit-noir genre. Jamie has many novels ahead of her, but Morgan is also working on a variety of other projects across crime, thriller, and mystery and plans to publish plenty more in 2022 and beyond.
First and foremost, a large thank you to Morgan Greene for providing me with a copy of this novel, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
I have been following Morgan Greene since his fist novel caught my attention. It seems that Greene has a knack for writing that keeps getting better with each story he produces. While Jamie Johansson has evolved, she has never turned into a predictable character, finding strength and grit in every situation. This book takes the story out of the ‘traditional’ police venue and places DI Johansson and her partner in survival mode. When aa murder on a Swedish oil rig requires some investigation, DI Johansson and Kriminalinspektör Wiik are chosen to take the trip over 500 kms off the Norwegian coast to find the killer. What begins as a simple investigation takes a turn for the worse quickly. As no one can get on or off the rig, the killer must be there, but who could it be? Johansson and Wiik become hunted prey as they try to survive until help can arrive, hindered by stormy weather. As the body count mounts, it will be a race to reveal the killer before Johansson and Wiik become victims themselves. Series fans will be eager to get their hands on this novel, as Morgan Greene dazzles throughout.
While DI Jamie Johansson remains seconded to Stockholm Polis, she is eager to keep working leads on who might have killed her father. However, her time to do so is short lived when summoned to begin a daring investigation. There’s been a murder on a Swedish oil rig off the Norwegian coast. Bolstad has called on Stockholm’s best homicide detectives to take the lead and catch the killer, thereby saving their teetering reputation. When Johansson and her partner, Kriminalinspektör Anders Wiik, are shuttled 500 kilometres out to sea, they can only hope it will take a few hours to find a killer, who must be among the crew.
However, arriving on the rig is the easy part, as DI Johansson and Wiik find themselves not welcomed by the crew from the outset. As the detectives try to get a handle on what’s happened, Johansson and Wiik find themselves targeted by someone who wants to snub out the investigation before it gains any momentum. However, with a strong intuitive sense, Johansson and Wiik are ale to dodge a few bullets—literally—while others are not so lucky.
Once DI Johansson learns that there may have been some tampering with the rig, it’s a matter of determining who hatched the plan and how the secret’s been kept. All the while, gale-force winds and stormy seas keep Johansson and Woiok from being able to receive any additional backup. It does, however, permit them a little time to discuss another matter, that being the impetus to see them take the case and how it connects to Johnasson’s own investigation into her father’s death. However, all that will be moot if they cannot make it back to land, something that becomes more unlikely with each passing hour. A chilling story where the hunters become the hunted and police work turns to pure survival!
There is something to be said of an author who can push outside their usual confines and still create a story that matches past publications. It would seem that Morgan Greene can do both with ease, keeping his fans flipping pages well into the night. There is much to learn and even more that remains hidden within these books, though each piece offers some crumbs that point the way to the larger picture. Greene is masterful and anyone curious about a unique take on police procedurals need look no further than this series with a strong protagonist in Jamie Johansson.
Series fans will see the growth that DI Jamie Johansson has made throughout, even if it is incremental. She has her eye on the prize and never strays from finding the truth. While policework is her primary interest, solving the cold case that is her father’s murder (covered up to appear like a suicide) proves to be the added momentum needed to keep the young detective on track. Greene has done well to craft her as both unique and intriguing, with just enough grit to keep her ready to push the boundaries of all that is set out before her. There’s so much more to learn, which I hope Greene will reveal in time.
As with most of Greene’s other works, the supporting cast makes the book come to life, complementing and contrasting with Johansson in equal measure. This is a story unlike many of the others, where the killer is right there, though their identity remains unknown. With nowhere to hide, it becomes a game of cat and mouse, forcing the reader to find clues in all those who grace the pages of this procedural. That adds depth and much intrigue to an already great story.
As Greene admits in his author’s note, the story seeks to reinvent the police procedural by moving the setting away from what many might expect. Like an isolated island or even a moving train, the setting forces the reader to examine all those in the confined space and posit who might be acting and for what reason. Turning the investigators into prey themselves, the dramatic approach is heightened and I am pleased to see Greene has done this so well. The narrative moved along well and there were few moments I felt it lag. Strong characters, witty dialogue, and a plot that kept me guessing are all parts of the overall story that will have me coming back for more. The story arc of the suicide that was murder has me wondering who is hiding something, particularly with that stunning epilogue that left the reader seeing new pieces of the puzzle emerge and fall into place in the closing sentences. Brilliant work... with another novel soon to come!
Kudos, Mr. Greene, for another winner. You have the gift and I enjoy how you pass it along to your readers with such apparent ease.
I have been following Jamie Johansson’s career for 5 books now. First the 3 book prequel series where she was a Detective Sergeant in the UK. Then, on being promoted to DI she is seconded back to her native Sweden. This is the second of the Swedish based books. The first one, Angel Maker, was a doozy. But Jamie has an ulterior motive for staying in Sweden. She wants to understand the circumstances of her beloved father’s death. He was also a police officer but his death is officially listed as a suicide. Jamie wants to prove this is not the case.
In this book, Jamie and her partner Kriminalinspektör Anders Wiik are sent on a very dodgy mission by Kriminalkommisarie Ingrid Falk who heads up the Violent Crime Department. There has been a death on a Swedish oil drilling platform, Bolstad B, hundreds of kilometres off the coast of Norway. They are to depart by helicopter that afternoon. Jamie doesn’t like the sound of this at all. They will be walking into the unknown with no forensics and no back-up. Falk indicates she is over a barrel with this case and dangles a carrot for Jamie - she promises her a name in relation to her father’s death.
This case stinks from the beginning. Joining Jamie and Wiik on the helicopter are Arnold Wallace, Bolstad’s ‘fixer’ and two heavies. On arrival at the rig they must hand over their guns.
From the start things are not as they seem and danger looms everywhere. They are in unfamiliar and dangerous environment, nobody is willing to talk, they are attacked by unseen assailants, three female research students are missing and the bodies are piling up. If not for Jamie’s mad Taekwondo skills they would both be dead. The company, which is struggling to survive is using Wallace to cover everything up. Bodies lost at sea don’t tell any tales!
So this was not your regular crime story but rather a quest for survival, a fight to the death, as a storm rages and the two police officers have no leverage and don’t know who, if anyone, can be trusted. This was literally an ‘edge of your seat’ thriller. The hits just kept coming. I just had to stay up and finish this. It was so suspenseful. The series is a blend of Scandi noir and high stakes thriller elements from a very talented Welsh author. Jamie’s character takes no prisoners. She never backs down and she has the skills to back it up. Wiik, her long suffering partner has her back. But this book was all about the action! I’m going to read the next book now before getting back to my arcs.
This thriller will have You on an oil rig in Sweden, the cold, frosty air whipping around you as the sea hurls water onto the deck...Splashing everything as you try to breathe, and keep up with cops Jamie Johansson and her partner Wilks as they try to investigate a murder...But they soon believe they have only been brought in for show, to prove to the public and their sponsors that the oil company takes the murder seriously...But Do they?! Jamie and Wilks are quickly removed to the office, their weapons taken, while two guards with a man who is obviously a 'fixer', brandish their own weapons on their hips! And crazy things start happening...They are somehow locked out of the building, with Jamie having to use every skill in her repertoire to make it to safety...But before she can open a door for the others she is attacked!! This author definitely improves with each book, and gives us an action-filled, intense story to live through, not knowing what will happen next, as more bodies appear...The killer is Very active... I received an ARC from this author, but offer You my honest thoughts and feelings in this review. If you enjoy a really good thriller grab this book TODAY!!!
Rising Tide is different from Angel Maker and it takes a bit longer for the action to start, but when it does...wow. Who knew oil rigs could be so scary and exciting?
What I loved the most about this book, is how the relationship between Jamie and Wiik develops even more. All those times when Wiik protected Jamie (or tried to) were so sweet.
I missed Hallberg, but for her sake it's better she didn't get to go with them. Hopefully everything will be back to normal in Old Blood (as if, after that ending, but I'm thinking happy thoughts).
My Rating: 3⭐️⭐️⭐️ it was good, but it was tiring!!
DI Jamie Johansson is back and she is on an impossible mission. The body of a crew member from an oil platform in the Norwegian Sea has been found brutally murdered and strung up for all to see.
With only so many people on board and almost no where to go, in gruelling conditions… it should be easy to secure a murderer right?? WRONG!!
There is no police, there is no law and nobody is safe!!
This is book two in the series, I think you could read as a standalone so long as you don’t mind missing a bit of the Jamie backstory. Most of it is explained so I do think you could muddle through that part of it.
Honestly, I was really enjoying the series but this book just tired me out. It’s 404 pages long which is ok, but its constantly on the go… but not in a die hard way, which I love. More in a frustrating characters making stupid decisions and repeating things a lot.
We quite literally follow the two MCs around up and down in and out of the decks of this oil platform and they go to places they have been before and there are attempts on their lives, they get stabbed and slashed and shot at etc etc… but as the body count rises it seems like the point of them being there is really … pointless.
I just felt like we were going in circles a lot and if we had been treated to 100 less pages it might have been easier to get where we were going.
Jamie was still pretty likeable but she has been written in a way that makes her fighting skills almost super hero… which is unrealistic… that is ok if thats what you are going for but then there is so many elements that suggest the author wanted an authentic police procedural that it just felt disjointed.
The other two things I had issue with was… Jamie came to us in book one fresh from London with a boyfriend at home… now they had a meh relationship nothing bad but no passion… but they lived together. Not once in this novel after seemingly being in Sweden 3months longer than anticipated does she even give him a call to say see ya sucker I am off… its like he never existed.. that kind of annoyed me. Not the end of the world but still weird.
The other thing was MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD…
The story takes a mob/gang type direction near the end. So this is part of a bigger syndicate or picture of crime and corruption.. and I dunno it just feels forced.
SPOILERS OVER…
Overall it wasn’t bad… I just don’t feel compelled to keep going. The ending had me a bit meh… even though there was a lot of excitement but as I said it was so exhausting I was actually glad it was over and then the ending was oh…right … great!!! And Also Jamie was this weird super hero near the end for seemingly no reason at all… it just didn’t make sense.
Three might actually be generous but I didn’t hate it… I don’t think I would recommend it though.
4.5 Ein richtig nicer Thriller voller Action von Anfang bis Ende. Das Setting war auch echt beklemmend und die Story rund um Jamies Vater nimmt auch spürbar Fahrt auf.
What a waste of time and money! I struggled through to 41% and could not cope with another character "balling their fists" or "straightening their lips", both of which happen every few pages! The story was boring, hard to follow, and basically nonsense! So I read from 92% and figured out what had happened. Will definitely not be reading any more books from this author, and would not recommend.
I really enjoyed the first DO Johansson thriller but I found this plot difficult to follow and fractured. No opportunity to understand the characters and the ending disappointing
Given the main location of the story I expected to be engulfed in a very claustrophobic atmosphere, often the scene for exciting fiction. However it did not work for me.Too complicated, too many characters and unsatisfactory explanations.
This is the second book in the Jamie Johannson series set in Sweden. This time a mysterious murder on an oil drilling platform takes Jamie and Wiik aboard. It can only have been one of those on the platform so it should be an easy solve right? Well no, as it turns out. As more bodies pile up and Jamie is attacked it seems as it someone doesn't want them to uncover the truth. This is such a brilliant setting for a book. Isolated, cold, stormy. Different elements that you won't find in other fiction. The isolation in particular, knowing all those on board are stuck there, there really is no escape. As it's set off the coasts of Sweden the temperatures are even lower adding another level of genuine risk from the cold. This builds up slowly, getting to know all the players, theories are bandied around all over the place with none seeming any more plausible than the next. The last third is full on tension filled action. A remind yourself to breathe kind of ending. Very cleverly plotted and and characters are generally odious, but cleverly written to be so. There is a lovely moment between Jamie and Wiik, giving more of an insight into their growing friendship. There are hints of bigger plots involving Jamies father and that there may be more people involved than even she is aware of. All in all another fantastic read.
2.5? I wish this was a 10 point rating system 😅 I'm being very inconsistent with my ratings it's making me stressed
This book was average, I liked the first one and maybe I'll listen to the next while I wait for my other Libby holds. I feel like a closed room mystery on a drilling rig sounds so promising but this was such a mess, and they were such useless detectives?? So much potential missed for all the other characters, and a messy plot that was hard to follow
2.5 - I liked the first book in this series (Angel Maker) but this one didn’t seem to have much of a plot. Too long - same thing happening over and over.
Very honoured to receive an ARC copy of Rising Tide this week! If only I didn’t have to go to work I would have devoured this book in one sitting! That said I did spend every moment on my lunch break reading it!
Rising Tide brings the two main characters of DI Jamie Johanssen and Kriminalinspektor Anders Wiik to of all places an Oil Rig in the Norwegian Sea where a murder has occurred. It’s owned by a Swedish Oil Company called Bolstad and its here where the body of Alejandro Reyes, a 27 year old Spaniard, is found on Bolstad B Platform.
Johanssen and Wiik are sent out to the rig on the orders of their boss Falk, Johanssen is immediately suspicious over the reasons they are being sent out to investigate to crime as the victim is Spanish and ordinarily the Spanish police would be investigating.
Once out there they are left alone on the rig with the 10 employees and Bolstads ‘Senior Risk Advisor’ and his 2 bodyguards plus 3 students from Helsinki University who are undertaking a research study. With bodies dropping all around them they simply have to stay alive long enough to solve the crime and escape the rig! Who killed Reyes? Where is the missing student? What’s the motive? Why do the rest of the staff keep being murdered?! How can you solve a crime hundreds of miles off the coast?!
I honestly found this book so gripping from the opening chapter! It’s full of intrigue and mystery and the classic obvious suspect.....but is he?! I also love the developing connection between Johanssen and Wiik and the trust that is beginning to come along with that. There are many twists and turns, thinking they have figured out the killer only to realise they are wrong. It’s a definite page turner and definitely earned every one of the five stars I awarded it!! I’m just sad now that I have to wait a while for the next instalment!!
4* #2 in the DI Jamie Johansson series A Scandi locked room thriller set on an oil rig in the Norwegian Sea 342 miles from land. There’s nothing cosy about this locked room offering. It’s more of a gritty action movie hero thriller. Jamie and Wiik have 5 days to find the answers to a murder before the crew are replaced. It appears that there are some political forces driving the manner of the investigation. There are 10 crew on board plus 3 research investigators, minus 1 dead body. Jamie and Wiik are not the only ones to go to the rig though, there’s a company risk assessor Wallace with 2 armed body guards. It has some dry sense of humour. It has a good pace. It is imaginative having a well constructed plot, plenty of tension and suspense which is generated throughout. They all appear to provide unreliable accounts. Jamie is feisty and gutsy, gung ho and at times makes poor Wiik look a little superfluous. With the ongoing shifting in the complex theories regarding the culprit at around 30-50% I ended up getting the theories and people muddled. I resorted to making notes, as there are a lot of characters to get to grips with. I believe the author is intending to add a whose who which would be beneficial. The first third was excellent and compelling. The second third is where I got a bit confused. The end comes together well with plenty of action and tension. It has good drama. It has a clean ending but at the same it leads us into the premise of the next book. It’s not your usual police procedural, it’s an action thriller, going away from my usual reading choice. I found this to be a very enjoyable read.
Wow! I loved this book. The setting of the oil rig ramps up the tension and adds to the feeling of being helpless and trapped with no escape, while a killer is picking off their victims steadily.
It begins with Jamie and Wiiks being sent to the Bolstad oil rig to investigate the murder of a driller on board. With the location being what it is, the killer still has to be there. Everyone is a suspect. Jamie and Wiiks immediately find themselves literally locked out and trapped at the mercy of the freezing elements. The vividness conveyed of the weather and the oil rig feels so real that I found myself almost holding my breath in dread. This sets the tone for the rest of the book.
There's lots of tension and lots of action. I found myself wanting to keep reading while at the same time, reading almost in fear of what might happen next. Great combination! Although the story is wrapped up here, the ending is set up now for the sub-plot involving Jamie's dead father to continue.
Can't wait for the next book. Morgan is fast becoming one of my go-to authors where I would just buy whatever he released. No mean feat by any stretch of the imagination.
Loving that I found a wonderful mystery/thriller writer to enjoy. I have grown to really appreciate the MC, she is a strong female lead and has a fantastic partner who is committed to her and likeable in his own way. I enjoy how the mystery is laid out and unfolds to the reader. While you may get a glimpse of the main crime or event, you get all the clues at the DI's do. Lots of fun little twists thrown in just to make sure it's not fully clear until the end.
I’d been meaning to read this for a while but thought if it was as action packed as its predecessor I might need more time than I’d had. I wasn’t disappointed: action packed and relentlessly pacy. Jamie and Wiik have their work cut out with this one! Twisty; you’ll keep changing your mind about the plot, the killer, the enemy. Give yourself the time to read it properly.
I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced readers copy of this book and I have to say it's an absolute corker! Fast paced and gritty it kept me gripped from the start to the very end, and the ending? All I can say is that I did not seeing coming! 5 stars from me, well done Morgan and thank you once again, can't wait to read your next book 😊
3.5 - this is the second book in the trilogy and while I absolutely loved the first installment, this one was just okay. I'll still read the third, just to see how everything turns out in the end.
In the second book of this exciting Scandi crime-thriller series, DI Jamie Johansson and Kriminalinspektör Anders Wiik of Stockholm Polis are sent to investigate a brutal murder on an oil platform in the Norwegian Sea. Tensions are running high as the crew begin to disappear one by one. Someone on the platform has their own terrifying agenda. As a ferocious storm descends, rescue becomes impossible for several days. Jamie and Wiik must confront their situation head-on if they're to have any chance of survival.
I'm really enjoying this series. The second book is just as good as the first. I thought the oil platform setting was highly original and claustrophobic. Imagine being trapped 342 miles from the nearest land. You're essentially on a man-made 'island' without immediate hope of rescue. There's a killer on the loose and time is running out. That's one scary scenario!
Feisty and seemingly fearless, DI Jamie Johansson is a fantastic character with a troubled background. She's brave and fiercely loyal. With partner Kriminalinspektör Anders Wiik they make a formidable team. Alongside her day job with the Stockholm Polis, Jamie is working covertly to solve the mystery of her father's suicide/murder. This subplot is set to progress throughout the series and slots in nicely.
The author's writing is excellent; capturing the terror and helplessness of the situation perfectly. It kept me up at night enthusiastically turning pages. It's action-packed and brimming with tension throughout — exactly the sort of book that appeals to me. Well done to author Morgan Greene on a fantastic addition to the series. I can't wait to read more.
Having read one of the books from the prequel series and the first DI Jamie Johansson series book I was excited to hear that the second book was coming out.
Great respect to the author for trying something a little different. I doubt you will have read a similar book to this but sadly it did not hit the mark for me. I love the character of Jamie and have felt previously that Jamie and Wiik controlled the storyline whereas in this book the location controlled the storyline. I do wonder if the book would have been better as a standalone with different characters although people reading this as the entry point for the author's work may get more enjoyment out of the book
I am still going to be waiting in awe for the next installment of the series as I feel that the author has many more books ahead of them in this series.
Many thanks to the author for providing me with an electronic review copy of this book in return for a honest, unbiased review
Not really my cup of tea, however I do like the character(Jamie). The writing in this book was good and even though I have never been on an oilrig I feel I could now find my around one! I just felt the amount of injuries the characters sustained was a little unbelievable. I will go on to read the next one and hope Jamie has a less stressful time of it.
