This series is developing really well now with this third book in the series featuring two well established lead characters, prison psychologist Olivia Rockwell and Detective Will Decker (Deck) in the fictional town of Fog Harbour, California.
In this episode, lawyer Peter Fox and his family on vacation at their Fog Harbour house are killed on July 4th and their house set alight, all except for the youngest child who runs away and hides after he sees a man start shooting his family. When the little boy is found he is too traumatised to tell the police and child psychologist what he witnessed but is terrified when he sees Deck's police badge. Deck has several suspects to investigate, but wonders whether the shooter could be a policeman.
There's plenty happening in this book, with plenty of action, twists in the plot and a nail-biting finish. Olivia and Deck's relationship is finally progressing, albeit slowly, as they finally acknowledge their feelings for each other. Olivia's quest to find out the truth about her father's death in prison does not advance much in this novel but looks likely to feature more in the next episode, which I am now eagerly waiting for. 4.5★

I have a weakness for Rockwell and Decker. They have a very slow romantic relationship developing. I like that! I hate full on romance, and this is definitely not that.
The best thing about this series? If you love a whodunit, and an absolutely messed up bunch of murders? This is really good!
I will say that I did know from the beginning who the murderer was. In truth? I really just wanted to place my hand inside the book, and give them a Jethro Gibbs knock upside the head! But, the last bit was sort of a surprise?!?
It was a good book!
What I like about this author is her/his willingness to have horrible death's, and also completely despicable characters!

(4.5*) One Child Alive is another gripping instalment in Ellery A. Kane's Rockwell and Decker series.
The book opens with a prologue featuring the affluent Fox family, defence attorney Peter, his wife former-lawyer-turned-socialite Hannah and their three children, fourteen-year-old Dylan, eleven-year-old Lily and four-year-old Thomas. The Foxes are preparing for a photo shoot and interview for local lifestyle magazine Santa Barbara Living, for an article that will crown them "Santa Barbara's Perfect Family".
For the remainder of the novel, the action shifts to northern California and the (fictional) town of Fog Harbor, three months after the Fox family's photo shoot. Residents, including forensic psychologist Olivia Rockwell and Fog Harbor police detective Will Decker, join the influx of summer visitors in watching a 4th of July fireworks display from the town beach. After sharing an awkward first kiss (which readers of the series have long anticipated) with Decker on the beach, Olivia has to leave early with her younger sister Emily, who's had a little too much to drink. On the drive home, they come across a burning car on a back road, and Olivia attempts unsuccessfully to save the driver - later identified as Peter Fox - who's still inside the vehicle. Shortly afterwards, another fire is reported at a beachfront house. After the fire is extinguished, first responders find three bodies - all shot - Hannah, Dylan and Lily Fox. Four-year-old Thomas has somehow managed to escape the carnage, and is found by Olivia huddled inside a lifeguard shelter nearby. Will the traumatised little boy be able to help police figure out what's happened to his apparently "perfect family" and identify a killer?
One Child Alive is a well-paced mystery-thriller, with a compelling character-based storyline featuring the series leads, Olivia Rockwell and Will Decker. The supporting characters, both recurring and new, are well-developed and the dialogue punchy and convincing. The plot takes many twists and turns as Decker follows up several promising suspects in the Foxes' murders, while trying to balance office politics and his developing relationship with Olivia. The northern California setting - which I picture as the awe-inspiring redwood forests and dramatic coastline around real-life Crescent City - is evocative and perhaps plays more of a direct role in this book than in previous series instalments. When Thomas goes missing, the trail leads searchers, including Olivia and Decker, towards a thrilling denouement in the disused mines beneath the heavily-forested State Park that surrounds Fog Harbor.
This is shaping up to be a really great series, and I can't wait to enjoy the next instalment. While there is significant character and relationship development over the course of the series, I believe that One Child Alive would also prove an enjoyable standalone read, or perhaps a starting point to return and re-read in series order. I'd recommend both One Child Alive and the series as a whole to any reader who enjoys well-written mystery-thrillers with great characters, intriguing plots and an evocative setting.

Olivia and Decker have a double challenge. They not only have to find the culprit but also have to save Thomas too. Because now the killer knows about the witness. They do not have many people whom they can trust.
Olivia is smart & instinctive and, her profession helps get her insight into the human mind. She is engrossed in solving her father’s case. The events around his incarceration were complicated and unclear.
Decker is more case-centric and yet distracted by other events around him. He is moving as if he has to prove something to himself.
Their partnership has grown since the first book. Their relationship has brightened. But, on the professional front, they are not in sync.
Olivia’s presence is less than in the earlier books. Decker takes center stage and investigates the case with Olivia’s help.
Olivia's attention is divided between her father’s case and Fox’s multiple homicides. It forms a parallel story and continues from the first book. The readers can hope it will continue to the next book.
The mystery and intrigue stay unaffected by the subplot. A lack of suspect pool and motive makes it harder to investigate the case.
The finale of the book comes with a huge thrill part and, the epilogue ends with hope for the next book.
The series is a must-read but, readers should read Book 1 and 2 as the subplots are related to the earlier books.

This is the third book in this contemporary crime thriller featuring Criminal Psychologist Olivia Rockwell and Homicide Detective Will Decker and this series just keeps on getting better! This time, the story starts on the fourth of July but it isn’t just the fireworks causing sparks, there’s another cold-hearted murderer in Fog Harbor. The victims are visiting prominent defence lawyer, Peter Fox, his wife and two of their three children. The youngest child, Thomas, escapes, but he saw the killer and what he did. . . . Can they catch the killer and protect Thomas?
There are plenty of potential suspects, including police officers, but the clues are confusing, Thomas is terrified and danger looms over them again. The characters are brought to life in the story, with strong personalities making it easy to decide how you’d relate to them. The relationship between Rockwell and Decker continues to develop, as does their relationship with their contemporaries. As an aside, I have to say that some of the so-called donuts sound horrid! Whilst this could be read as a standalone, there are a couple of investigations which are on-going through the series, which is why I’d suggest reading this series in order so you understand references to them.
This is a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat before being brought to a suspense-filled conclusion which has a few loose ends left dangling to make you want to read the next book in this series as soon as possible! I have no hesitation in highly recommending this series to anyone who enjoys superbly written, enthralling crime thrillers with great believable characters, intriguing plots and just a hint of possible romance.

Another great read in the Rockwell and Decker series.
Will is called to a house fire and there are three people who have been shot before being left in the fire.
One of the family’s children is missing so the hunt is on for Thomas. When he’s found he’s terrified to talk as he saw ‘the bad man’ before he shot his family.
JB has a health scare but is soon back at work ready to wind Decker up.
Olivia and her sister Emily are still trying to get to the bottom of their father’s death but are getting nowhere, and someone is out for revenge on Will and lives are soon in danger.
This is an action packed crime thriller that definitely had me hooked.
I’d recommend you read the other books in the series to get the full backstory of Will and Olivia.
A great read that I’d highly recommend.

Stunning. A heart pounding, absolutely mind bogglingly twisted, incredibly fast paced read. I raced through this one. Really brilliant. A story that will stay with me.

I love this series and I must say that I preferred book 2 to book one, I struggled to get into this one straight away.
Decker and Olivia's romantic fourth of July is ruined when an entire family bar the youngest son are shot in the head and the house set on fire Detective Decker has his work cut out of him 4 murders. Olivia as always is trying to help whilst also trying to find out what happened to her dad.
I love our leads especially Olivia and I loved her storyline in the previous book. But she was kind of pushed back in this book. I wanted more about her investigation into her father's suicide. I loved finding out her family stuff previously and I suppose I wanted that to continue. However Emily is more prominent in this book so we get a bit of an insight into their relationship which was nice
Detective Ben Decker on the other hand seems a bit all over the place in this book. We are used to his laser point hunches but he seems as confused as the reader. Even when he has a solid idea trying to get it to fit the narrative is hard. Let's just say he doesn't make many friends during this investigation, especially as the only surviving witness is 4 years old and adamant the killer was a cop.
Now let's talk about 4 year old Tommy, I love him. What a cutie. He keeps referring to the murderer as the bad man which technically is true. He adds something to the book and in a book where the crimes are so heinous it was great to have such an innocent character.
Ben and Olivia are a bit like Ross and Rachel we all know they will end up together the question is when. Their love for each other jumps of the pages and I think at one point I was more invested in them getting together than finding out who the killer was. Let's just say their love is tested.
Would I recommend this book?
Yes but not as a stand alone. I feel you need to know the history of the characters to really connect to the story. I found too many suspects and really no evidence quite stressful to keep up with at times. But the devotion to our leading characters had me hooked. This book goes from zero to one hundred pretty quick so be prepared! It doesn't do that thing so many books do where they just have one crazy chapter and all is over it stretches over a few which got me wanting more. Plus the epilogue already has me excited for book four. 3 🌟

I don’t normally read these kinds of books. But I’d read anything Ellery A Kane put out... even her shopping list. I’ve been lucky enough to follow her writing career from the start and even got to do a really cool interview with her back in the day.
I say this with every review I leave for her books, but she really keeps getting better and better! Her opening scenes always suck me in. When I first downloaded this to my kindle, I swore to myself that I was only going to read a few pages because my kitchen was a mess and I needed to clean it. Yeah... my partner came home with our daughter a few hours later and there I was... curled up on the sofa with a dirty kitchen. I just couldn’t put it down!
I am in love with both Decker and Olivia. They are fantastic, well flushed out characters that are so good at what they do. This novel is dark and twisted and the vibe of it just perfect! Pair this story with a creepy video in the background and a glass of wine…. just perfection!
Yes, I was given this novel for free, but that will never influence my review. This book is just that good! Even if this story isn’t your normal genre, give it a go. It will suck you in.

The 4th of July is supposed to be a day of celebrations but for the seemingly perfect Fox family, the day of independence ends in horror and bloodshed when four members of the family are brutally murdered. The fifth member, four year old Tommy is found, traumatised and sobbing in a nearby coast guard tower by Dr Olivia Rockwell who does her best to comfort the little boy. When Detective William Decker (Deck) arrives at the scene and tried to reassure Tommy by showing him his police badge, Olivia and Will are shocked by the young boy's hysterical reaction.
During the ensuing, complex quadruple murder investigation Will learns that the Fox's marriage was not as perfect as it appeared to be and the shocking possibility that their killer could have been a police officer. Meanwhile as well as helping the police try to get answers from little Tommy,poking her nose into Will's investigation and carrying out her therapy sessions at the prison, Olivia is still investigating the death of her father. She still doesn't believe the official version of events and has decided to use her position at the prison in her quest to uncover the truth, even if it means breaking a law or two. Despite knowing that her investigation is placing her life in danger, she is determined to uncover the identity of the mysterious figure known as the General. Throughout the story as well as having concerns about little Tommy's safety and well being, Olivia was also worried about the behaviour of her younger sister Emily and then there was the developments in her relationship with Deck.
Omg, this is fast paced, thrill ride during which the reader is hardly given the opportunity to draw in a breath as the story unfolded and you encountered more twists and turns than a roller coaster. A child in danger always adds intensity to a story especially when the child is as adorable as little Tommy and I spent a lot of the book with heightened feelings of anxiety for his safety and well-being. The final quarter of the book is a nerve shredding, nail biting, life threatening battle of wits and contains a unexpected, mind blowing twist. The author has created a fantastic cast of vivid, recurring characters, individuals who worm their way into your heart and ensure that you look forward to revisiting them in the future. Although this book can be read and enjoyed as a standalone, to enjoy the series to its full potential and due to Will and Olivia's continuing background stories,it is advisable to read the books in order. This is brilliant, addictive series and I can't wait to find out what the author has planned for Will and Olivia in book 3. Very very highly recommended and definitely going to be one of my favourite reads of this year.

Released 23rd June 2021, it's 358 pages and is available in paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately; it makes it so easy to find information with the search function.
This is a fast paced and tension filled crime novel with an immediate start and multiple murders from the first chapter. The descriptions are direct and whilst not pruriently gruesome, they are often brutal. The opening murder victims are a family of 5 with only the youngest child surviving. None of the narrative is particularly over the top and fans of crime thriller fiction likely won't be bothered. Readers of cozy village mysteries should proceed with caution.
The writing is capably rendered, with well fleshed out characters who are believable and engaging. The tension arc is controlled and the disparate plot threads are woven together cleverly, moving to a satisfying denouement and resolution.
This is the third book in the series and I was unfamiliar with the characters or background going into the read. I found it quite difficult to keep the characters and their interrelationships straight in my mind; there's very little background related by the author to get readers up to speed. As such, I think it's definitely a worthwhile read, but I wouldn't suggest it to readers as an entry point to the series. It doesn't work very well as a standalone.
Definitely one for fans of thrillers.

One Child Alive is the 3rd book featuring Ellery A. Kane's detectives Rockwell and Decker.
The story begins with a prologue featuring the Fox family, defence lawyer Peter, his wife former-lawyer-turned-socialite, Hannah and their three children, Dylan, 14, Lily, 11 and four-year-old Thomas. The Fox's are preparing for a photo shoot, interview and article for a local magazine. Set in northern California and the (fictional) town of Fog Harbor, three months after the Fox family's photo shoot, residents, including forensic psychologist Olivia Rockwell and Fog Harbor police detective Will Decker, are watching a 4th of July fireworks display. Olivia leaves the beach area with her younger sister Emily and on their way home, they spot a burning car. Olivia attempts to save the driver, who's still inside the vehicle but he's already gone. The Fire and Rescue engine suddenly roars into life on its way to another fire, this time at a property at Shell beach, the rental where the Fox family are staying. The police find three dead bodies there, but Thomas is missing. Olivia finds him in an abandoned lifeguard hut.
One Child Alive had a well-thought-out plot and there was a lot going on. The novel is told from Olivia and Deck’s points of view, so the finer details remain obscure and puzzling until the action-packed showdown. The characters all have strong personalities, and an array of suspects but few clues meant some hard work for the team. The author's fluent writing continues to impress me and I never found myself bored. The main thread of the plot is accompanied by other subplots chiefly concerning the private lives of Decker and Rockwell. The primary storyline is well wrapped up leaving a few dangling threads, paving the way for further development in future books. I can't wait to read more about Rockwell and Decker.

One Child Alive is the third book in the Rockwell and Decker series. I have been reading this series by Ellery Kane from the first book and cannot give enough praise for this series. As psychological thrillers go…I am finding this story (and the series) totally captivating. The evolution of the relationship between prison psychologist Olivia Rockwell and Detective Will Decker is a slow burn from book 1 through book 3. I am finding that quite satisfying. Additionally, the growth of other recurring characters in this series has continued to further enhance my interest.
One Child Alive begins with Olivia watching the fourth of July fireworks with her sister Emily (in fairness – Olivia is trying to drag Emily to the car to go home before the fireworks display is over) when she notices smoke coming out of a sports utility vehicle on the side of the road. This can’t be good! What ensues is Olivia trying to rescue the lone occupant, who turns out to already be dead by a single gunshot to the head. Decker hears the call over his radio so quickly goes to the crime scene. From here, another call comes out and another crime has been committed – at the home of the deceased. So what we have is the Fox family (husband, wife and two of their kids) dead, while the youngest child (Thomas) has run away after seeing his family killed. When found, he is frightened of Will, leaving only Olivia to comfort him. One must ask (okay – I asked myself) why would Thomas be afraid of Will?
The tangled web that ensues to uncover the killer (or killers) of the deaths of the Fox family is very much a tangled mess. It is slow going to identify all the potential suspects, especially as Peter Fox was a prominent Santa Barbara defense attorney – who undoubtedly has ruffled some feathers in his time. Why two crime scenes, why kill the whole family, why? Left with lots of questions and lots of suspects – Will and Olivia begin to unravel the web of lies and deceit as they get ever closer to the truth of what (and more importantly why) this has happened. During the process, there is still danger for Thomas. This certainly added to my emotional response throughout the reading of this story.
As the story progresses, we see the previous resolve to remain plutonic friends between Olivia and Will slowly evaporate – all I can say is – about time! But in all honesty – I have enjoyed that they were cautious and considerate of their working relationship and the fact that they each have mega baggage still to work through. And – what has happened is again – a step but a small step – but acknowledging that something is there seemed huge.
Additionally, the relationship between Olivia and her sister was strained, but eventually they were able to work things out (see what talking to each other does ☺). Unfortunately, their pursuit to find out the truth about their father’s death in prison does not advance much in this novel. Guess that leaves the door open for another book.
I got many chuckles from JB (still calling Will “City Boy”) as well as concern when he has a significant medical event. You could really see the concern Will has for his partner, regardless of their continual bantering between them. I came to appreciate JB’s tenacity as the story went on – caring for his partner the same as Will had done for JB. Though I must admit – I will never think of Twinkies in the same way again.
Most importantly, I was not able to unravel the mystery until the end, which is satisfying when I read stories in this genre. If you enjoy crime thrillers with many interesting characters and plot twists, then you will enjoy One Child Alive by Ellery Kane. I shall be waiting for the next installment of the Rockwell and Decker series (with fingers crossed that there will be another).

This was a well-written thriller with compelling characters and a compelling plot. I loved that the story started fast, and the pace was consistent. There were numerous twists and turns, and there were no loose ends dangling at the finish. The tale was believable and frightening.

Intriguing all the way to the end. Detective Deker just wanted a peaceful July 4th. Instead we have a murder to keep him busy. Absolutely fast paced to keep you wondering what happens next.

This is the 3rd book in this series and with each book I get more and more hooked! This kept my attention, left me guessing and was oh so interesting, not to mention FINALLY Deck an Olivia get somewhere in their relationship. Looking forward to the next book from this talented writer!

This is the third book I have read by this author. It is also the third book in the 'Rockwell and Decker' series but it can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Watch Her Vanish' (book one in the series) and 'Her Perfect Bones' (book two in the series which I highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of Melinda Leigh, Lisa Regan and Kendra Elliot.' I am a huge fan of all three of those authors so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Ellery and if this is half as good as 'Watch Her Vanish' and 'Her Perfect Bones' it is sure to be an epic read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue, 75 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in the USA 🇺🇸.
This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Detective Will Decker and Criminal Psychologist Oliver Rockwell. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
Another very well written and gripping novel by Ellery Kane. The vivid descriptions fitted the settings perfectly. The cover and synopsis worked perfectly with the storyline. I loved the various settings and the scripts and reports which were well placed throughout giving us a view of what the outside world is seeing as well as some insight information from the police's side on some of the characters.
The storyline itself was quite a unique one and filled with action, mystery, suspense crime, drama and a few sparks of what could be which kept me reading until late at night and on the edge of my seat. There were loads of red herrings throughout to keep the reader guessing. I never did guess who did what which is a huge achievement for any author for me as I have read so many crime novels it's getting harder and harder to surprise me. I enjoyed that the book ends on a sort of cliffhanger with Olivia as it entices the readers to look forward to the next book.
I absolutely loved meeting all the characters again and some new ones too. They are all excellent strong characters and I enjoyed that there was a strong female lead in Olivia and I also really liked Will and JD's characters. I loved that there was some humour in between to lighten things up a little and I look forward to reading more about the characters. I also enjoyed watching the relationships develop even more between characters and am interested to see where they all lead in what promises to be another fantastic book in this gripping series.
A huge congratulations to Ellery on yet another fantastic addition to this addictive series. I cannot wait for the next one!!!
Overall an action packed and suspense filmed crime thriller that will keep you on edge and guessing throughout.

Another very well written and gripping novel by Ellery Kane. The vivid descriptions fitted the settings perfectly. The cover and synopsis worked perfectly with the storyline. I loved the various settings and the scripts and reports which were well placed throughout giving us a view of what the outside world is seeing as well as some insight information from the police's side on some of the characters.
The storyline itself was quite a unique one and filled with action, mystery, suspense crime, drama and a few sparks of what could be which kept me reading until late at night and on the edge of my seat. There were loads of red herrings throughout to keep the reader guessing. I never did guess who did what which is a huge achievement for any author for me as I have read so many crime novels it's getting harder and harder to surprise me. I enjoyed that the book ends on a sort of cliffhanger with Olivia as it entices the readers to look forward to the next book.
I absolutely loved meeting all the characters again and some new ones too. They are all excellent strong characters and I enjoyed that there was a strong female lead in Olivia and I also really liked Will and JD's characters. This is the third book I have read by this author. It is also the third book in the 'Rockwell and Decker' series but it can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Watch Her Vanish' (book one in the series) and 'Her Perfect Bones' (book two in the series which I highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of Melinda Leigh, Lisa Regan and Kendra Elliot.' I am a huge fan of all three of those authors so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. One Child Alive by Ellery A. Kane is the third in the Rockwell & Decker series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Series Background: (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)
Dr. Olivia Rockwell is a Criminal Psychologist working at Crescent Bay State Prison, in her hometown of Fog Harbor, California. Her father, a member of the Oaktown Boys, was murdered in prison, and she recently found out he was informing for the FBI. Her half-brother Termite, also a member of the gang is in hiding. Her younger sister, Emily, is an art student. Detective Will Decker moved to Fog Harbor after his brother was convicted of shooting a woman, ending up in prison because Will turned him in. Will's partner is Jimmy Benson (JB for short), and his boss is Chief Sheila Flack.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
On the way home from a fireworks show, Olivia comes across a burning vehicle. She manages to pull out the driver, but he is dead, a gunshot wound to his head. Peter Fox left a wife and three kids, and his murderer behind. Soon after clearing the truck fire, the firetrucks are whisked away to another fire up the road, and to the house that Peter Fox and his family had rented.
The only survivor of that awful day was 4 year old Thomas, who screamed when Will tried to comfort him by displaying his badge. Olivia took control. His Aunt Nora came to help with his care, but he is known for hiding, and one night, he can't be found.
The Fox family had recently been featured in a magazine and touted as "Santa Barbara's Perfect Family". Perhaps not. Peter Fox was a big-deal defense attorney, with a secret. The list of suspects will be long, but include two police officers, and a felon recently released from prison.
Meanwhile, Olivia has not stopped investigating her father's murder, and it looks like her sister hasn't either.
Oh, and escapee prisoner Drake Devere is still missing.
My Opinions:
This is definitely a "read the books in order" type of series, as the history of the characters is important in understanding their actions.
I still like both Will and Olivia (although the romance angle is getting old). I really like JB (that's new), and Emily still annoys the crap out of me. It's too bad the cop angle didn't play out, because that is one character I could do without.
There wasn't quite as much family drama in this book as in the last, and the author concentrated on the mystery more, which was definitely welcome. It was a good plot, and with plenty of suspects to keep things interesting. Although I had guessed the identity of the perpetrator, I didn't have a clue as to motive, and I certainly didn't see who was egging him on. This always makes things fun.
I fear that the next book will go back to "family" issues once again, and I'm not really looking forward to it, but we will see....cause I can't stop reading them now!

One Child Alive is the third book in the Rockwell and Decker series. I have been reading this series by Ellery Kane from the first book and cannot give enough praise for this series. As psychological thrillers go…I am finding this story (and the series) totally captivating. The evolution of the relationship between prison psychologist Olivia Rockwell and Detective Will Decker is a slow burn from book 1 through book 3. I am finding that quite satisfying. Additionally, the growth of other recurring characters in this series has continued to further enhance my interest.
One Child Alive begins with Olivia watching the fourth of July fireworks with her sister Emily (in fairness – Olivia is trying to drag Emily to the car to go home before the fireworks display is over) when she notices smoke coming out of a sports utility vehicle on the side of the road. This can’t be good! What ensues is Olivia trying to rescue the lone occupant, who turns out to already be dead by a single gunshot to the head. Decker hears the call over his radio so quickly goes to the crime scene. From here, another call comes out and another crime has been committed – at the home of the deceased. So what we have is the Fox family (husband, wife and two of their kids) dead, while the youngest child (Thomas) has run away after seeing his family killed. When found, he is frightened of Will, leaving only Olivia to comfort him. One must ask (okay – I asked myself) why would Thomas be afraid of Will?
The tangled web that ensues to uncover the killer (or killers) of the deaths of the Fox family is very much a tangled mess. It is slow going to identify all the potential suspects, especially as Peter Fox was a prominent Santa Barbara defense attorney – who undoubtedly has ruffled some feathers in his time. Why two crime scenes, why kill the whole family, why? Left with lots of questions and lots of suspects – Will and Olivia begin to unravel the web of lies and deceit as they get ever closer to the truth of what (and more importantly why) this has happened. During the process, there is still danger for Thomas. This certainly added to my emotional response throughout the reading of this story.
As the story progresses, we see the previous resolve to remain plutonic friends between Olivia and Will slowly evaporate – all I can say is – about time! But in all honesty – I have enjoyed that they were cautious and considerate of their working relationship and the fact that they each have mega baggage still to work through. And – what has happened is again – a step but a small step – but acknowledging that something is there seemed huge.
Additionally, the relationship between Olivia and her sister was strained, but eventually they were able to work things out (see what talking to each other does ☺). Unfortunately, their pursuit to find out the truth about their father’s death in prison does not advance much in this novel. Guess that leaves the door open for another book.
I got many chuckles from JB (still calling Will “City Boy”) as well as concern when he has a significant medical event. You could really see the concern Will has for his partner, regardless of their continual bantering between them. I came to appreciate JB’s tenacity as the story went on – caring for his partner the same as Will had done for JB. Though I must admit – I will never think of Twinkies in the same way again.
Most importantly, I was not able to unravel the mystery until the end, which is satisfying when I read stories in this genre. If you enjoy crime thrillers with many interesting characters and plot twists, then you will enjoy One Child Alive by Ellery Kane. I shall be waiting for the next installment of the Rockwell and Decker series (with fingers crossed that there will be another).

It is the fourth of July in the small town of Fog Harbor, California. While most families are enjoying the fireworks, the loud booms and oohs and ah’s from the locals drown out the gunshots of a prominent local family being murdered at a house right on the beach. A Mother and two of her three children are shot dead and their house is set on fire but where is the third child, little red-headed Thomas. They found the Father shot to death in a car some miles away and they also set his car on fire. Psychologist Olivia Rockwell follows his toys and footsteps only to find him hiding under a lifeguard stand. But how did he get away? And why does he scream when he sees the police officer, Detective Will Decker?
While there are many interesting characters in this novel, it is told only from Olivia and Deck’s points of view, so the finale is a total surprise. I would have loved to hear the child’s point of view, as well. I really enjoy mysteries where you have not a clue who the perpetrator is, and this book did not disappoint. Though there are several suspects: the husband’s lover, the rogue cop and the prisoner out for revenge, One Child Alive is unpredictable, fast-paced and exciting. There are many side plots such as Olivia and Decker’s burgeoning romance, Olivia’s relationship with her sister and the little boy who keeps running away. One of my favorite parts of the book is the banter between Decker and his partner JB. While JB was on leave most of this book, I found him a very likable character and hope to see more of him in future installments. Another thing I enjoyed is that most of the characters in Ellery Kane’s novel are flawed. They make poor decisions, wrong guesses and suffer consequences.

I do not think you need to read the first two books but might be helpful for some things they refer to. There are definitely back stories, including the murder of Olivia’s father and her relationship with her stepbrother that it would be good to have more information about. This book also bears a slight resemblance to the movie Witness, first aired in 1985. Also about a young boy who has witnessed a murder and cannot talk about it.

There are some authors that just have that special quality that makes you want to read the book, even knowing that it will make you cry, laugh, and seethe with anger. Ellery Kane is one of those authors, and I'm so glad that I picked up her first book and am now finished reading the third book in what is fast becoming one of my favorite murder mystery series. I originally picked up the first book in the series thinking that there might be a bit of romance, since that's what I normally read, and since I love crime shows, I thought the murder mystery aspect would be really interesting to me. What has kept me reading isn't the romance, which remains a very small part of each book, but rather the thrilling, keeps-me-on-the-edge-of-my-seat mystery that the author continues to throw at me with amazing detail and drama. I never guess who the villain is. Never. I love that she is always keeping me guessing with each book.
Santa Barbara's Perfect Family. That was the caption from an article surrounding the family just weeks prior to their gruesome murder. Olivia Rockwell wasn't expecting to pull the father out of a burning vehicle, already dead from a bullet wound to his head. Detective Will Decker wasn't expecting to then be rushing to the scene of a fire with a gruesome body count. I kept the summary short, because there is so much going on in this story and I'm afraid to give too much away. There is a lot to unpack as more and more clues are uncovered. What I loved about this book was that we not only get an amazing murder mystery to keep us on our toes, but we also get to see Olivia and WIll become closer and realize their feelings for each other. They had such a rough start in the first book, and I've really enjoyed seeing their partnership go from business to friendship to now a true romance. I felt like yelling into the air, FINALLY! As a person who reads mainly romance books, I have been waiting for the day when they would finally see the light. The murder mystery aspect was fascinating, and I loved seeing how everything developed as more suspects were uncovered. I never knew what to think - at first I would point the finger at one suspect, then I would think the wife had something to do with it, and at the end of the day, I realized that was the point to it all. Murder isn't simple, a truly evil person isn't always the most obvious, and even if you think you've resolved a particularly terrible part of your past, sooner or later it will always come back to bite you.
The latter half of the book had my heart racing, and I found myself loving it so much. When it ended, I was both contented and also anxious to know what would happen next. I can't wait to see where Ellery Kane takes the series from here.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of One Child Alive, the third novel to feature psychologist Dr Olivia Rockwell and Detective Will Decker, set in the fictional Californian town of Fog Harbor.
A family is shot dead and their house is set on fire. Olivia finds it tragic until she sees a toy and small footsteps. Miraculously 4 year old Thomas Fox has survived by hiding. He isn’t saying much, but his terror when Deck reveals he is a police officer offers a line of investigation.
I thoroughly enjoyed One Child Alive, which is an exciting read with lots happening and a few good twists. I would, however, recommend reading the series in order as this novel elaborates on a couple of threads developed in the previous novels. I can’t say how much the reader would miss out by not reading them, because I have the knowledge but I think it would offer more.
The novel is told from Olivia and Deck’s points of view, so the who and why remain satisfactorily obscure and puzzling until the action packed showdown. I had a good guess at the perpetrator’s identity early on, but so what? It didn’t take me anywhere near a motive or the full story, so I tucked it away and enjoyed the rest of the journey.
The novel is well plotted and exciting. There is always something going on, be it developments in the murder enquiry or Olivia and Deck’s potential romance or small steps in Olivia’s quest to understand her father’s death. This latter bubbles away in the background, but with little progress it looks like a thread that could run and run. There is a frisson to it as Olivia works in the local prison and isn’t averse to recruiting help from the population. No, none of it is particularly realistic but it’s entertaining and that’s really all that matters.
I like the characterisation in the novel. Olivia is smart and driven but doesn’t always make the right decisions. Deck is more intuitive, but it’s the banter between him and his partner, JB, that make the novel such fun.

A little while ago I was thinking I really wanted to start reading more thrillers again. And like fate wanted to help me out, I saw a Tweet by Bookouture and took the opportunity to request ‘One Child Alive’ on Netgalley. Luckily, I got approved to read this book. Although this is book three in the Rockwell and Decker series it can be read as a standalone.
In ‘One Child Alive’ Olivia and Will are being shook up by two fires and the death of a young family. The only surviving family member is a young boy who seems to be horrified of Will. What does this mean? Is the suspect working for the police too? ‘One Child Alive’ is a book filled with a lot twists and surprises.
What is clear from the very first page is that this is a book where a lot is happening. Things don’t get boring for sure. And I loved how this book goes from mysterious and thrilling, to a little romantic and back. As someone who reads a lot of romance it was fun to read a little bit of romance in this thriller. But I didn’t feel the connection between Olivia and Will as much as I’d like. I do wonder if I’d felt this way if I read the previous books in the series?!
One of the things I loved most about this read was the interactions between Will and his partner, JB. Those where really funny and made this book even more interesting. But above all there was just a lot going on and I found myself wondering what was really going on several times. Ellery Kane definitely was able to keep things mysterious with this read.

One Child Alive is a police thriller set in the US. This is the third book in the series and I have previously reviewed the second book Her Perfect Bones by Ellery Kane. There are mentions of family issues from the past but I think this book would work as a stand alone novel.
Detective Will Decker finds himself concerned when the police appear to be the main suspect. His partner has been replaced by a sneering cop who had a confrontation with the family's father just before the murders. He relies upon Olivia Rockwell's psychological knowledge to help unravel the truth from 4 year old Thomas but how accurate a witness can a child be?
Will's partner JB was a source of light relief in the last book and still provides natural banter. However, his illness allows the plot to develop as Will is temporaily partnered with Graham. The animosity and sleaziness of Graham towards both Will and Olivia instantly made me see him as the prime suspect but he has friends in high places that protect him. It's always great to have a characters we love to hate :)
Will and Olivia's relationship takes a leap but there are still complications from their families. Both of them are so likeable that you are desperate for them to get together properly. Olivia manages to get involved in the investigation by finding clues but this puts her in danger...
One Child Alive is an entertaining and enthralling thriller and I look forward to seeing what happens for Will and Olivia next.

While you could read this book as a standalone I think you would get a better experience if you read all three books. There’s quite a bit of background that leads up to this story.
Detective Will Decker and Doctor Olivia Rockwell are an excellent team. In the previous books you got to see more of Olivia’s profiles which I missed in this book. In this book it seemed like Olivia just got herself into trouble more than anything else.
The pace of this book is quite slow to start with but it really ramps up about half way through. I found myself speeding through the last half as I just needed to know what was going to happen.
Ellery is very good at keeping the killer hidden. I had no idea who the killer was except that I didn’t think it was any of the suspects Deck and JB had in their sights. They all seemed too obvious and nothing ever really fitted.
The side story of Olivia’s Dad is still intriguing me and I’m sure at some point (maybe the next book?) it will come to the forefront and I will devour that book as Ellery has kept me in suspense about this for too long!

My first book by this author, but it’s the third in this series. I have not read the previous two and I deeply regret that. No panic though, I will read them because if they are as good as this one (and I deeply suspect they are 🙂 ) I will be in for two more treats.
The author really has the talent to keep you intrigued and makes you forget about the rest of the world. She writes rather short chapters which I like very much and at the end of each one, she adds a little (or big) cliffhanger. What can you do? You just can’t put the book away now, can you? You have to continue and finish one more chapter… Well, that’s the intention and suddenly you find yourself immersed again.
The reader is offered a bucket load of suspects and about some of them I thought: Nah, too obvious. Of course it’s not the first and it will not be the last time either that I completely miss the boat…
So in a nutshell: a story that I thoroughly enjoyed. I am very anxious to find out what happened before and what is still going to be revealed in the next book (s). 5 stars

I loved the previous books in this series but this one is my favorite so far as it kept me turning pages as fast as I could and I couldn’t put it down.
A gripping, complex and highly entertaining story, fast paced and full of twists and turns.
I was glad to catch up with Olivia and Will. The author created two very interesting and fleshed out characters and I like their character arc and how they are evolving.
Olivia is my favorite as she’s clever, strong willed and I loved how she felt for little Thomas and her bravery. Will is fleshed out, clever and a very interesting character (plus he’s got a cat and I also love his one-eyed cat).
On a general level all characters are interesting and well thought.
There’s a lot going on in the plot: plenty is happening and there’s no scarcity of suspects. There are some heartbreaking moments and the book never drags and always kept me on the edge.
The last part is very exciting and I suppose I forgot to breath. There’s hope for the future and I can’t wait to read the next story to read what will happen.
It’s strongly recommended.
