I’m assuming this was a TEDTalk before it became a book and I think it should have stayed that way.

Good points- introduction was really strong I was mesmerized by Robs story of his upbringing and his dad's bipolar disorder. How he didn't listen or take valuable advice at a young age. Generally contains good tips and common sense advice such as being aware and open to any coming opportunity and having the wisdom to go for it or not.

Bad points- after the great introduction it went down hill. Repetitive, egotistical at places where Rob rabbles on about his accomplishments at length. Rob was very lucky and he does address the factor of luck in his book, but I think a lot has to do with luck. He lived in a wealthy country, his dad gave a very comfortable lifestyle (which actually was a negative because it kept Rob dependent on his dad for a long time), the property market at the time was booming, dare I say it he is Caucasian and male which helps in the property investment industry (similar to his peers).

Robs success snow balled from his property portfolio. I believe houses should be homes, but anyway Rob tries to teach you a formula to get rich or achieve what you want, but life is more complex and can't be given cheap formulas.

Authored by Rob Moore, “Opportunity” is not just a self-help book but it includes practical ways and means of taking advantage of conditions , seizing the day and winning at life. It tells you of certain strategies that can be employed immediately and thereby ensuring a flow of opportunities coming your way, both big and small. Opportunities are everywhere. It is upto us to spot it,assess it and grab it and employ it to improve our lives. According to the author this search for ideas or opportunities is not all bed of roses. Opportunities come cloaked in various forms. Problems and failures are doors to opportunities and we must be “prepared “ to deal with them. As Abraham Lincoln said, “I will prepare and someday my chance will come”. Opportunities are thus linked to preparation. The next stage is how to prepare ourselves for opportunities. We can, the author suggests create our own “vision board”. This should include elements like a mantra, an image and an emotion. Visualization is a powerful tool for creating opportunities especially if you link your emotions with your goal or desire. Do opportunities exist through our own subjective perception or do we create them from our own experiences or perceptions . The answer to this is, it is a mixture of both. Hopelessness and failures should be seen as windows of opportunity. As Richard Branson says, “You have to fail to suceed”. The path to success is not just converting opportunities to your advantage, but also getting to know the real you. Some parts of your personality maybe constant but some others can be changed to your advantage. The author suggests that we interact more with people, as visibility is credibility and nothing exists in a vacuum. You have to priortize and position yourself in such a way that you start building and nurturing relationships and start to connect more; which will in turn bring more opportunities your way. The author says that he had widened his positioning through podcasting and authorship. Opportunity is not just grappling with problems and turning it into an advantage. The silver lining lies in what the Stoics believed in. They believed in “Memento Mori” or that death is inevitable in order to remind themselves to live. The sun will always go down on one day and come up on another. So seize the day and if you want to make that change, make it now. Fight procrastination, perfectionism, overwhelm, indecision and fear of the unknown. But not every opportunity is useful. You must use your diligence and quality research to assess oportunities and apply risk assessment process before you embrace them. You have to get your, “return on investment” on opportunities and take only those that have some value to you in life. You can also make a “to do “ list of tasks that only you can do and leverage the rest. This exercise will give you more clarity in mixing and matching approaches to opportunities. Life is a journey in self-development and you are on a learning curve. Success can mean different things to different people. Basically it is related to your goals, aims and purposes. The author feels that when you achieve the goal that you had set out to do, you will smell success. But the chances are greater if the goal that you set is “smart”or meaningful and not unrealistic. Don’t let extremes or the “comparison curse”bog you down or derail you. Happiness can come your way if you constantly measure your progress and keep an eye on the prize or your ultimate goal. In the process there is no harm in seeking advice or help or even being accountable for your actions. It is all about developing the right mindset and turning negatives into positives, like what some famous personalities that we know of did; from Thomas Edison, J K Rowling to Malala Yousafzai. They maxed their opportunities and cocked a snook at the world. In the final analysis, the author Rob Moore has in his book revealed that there are opportunities in abundance and hope for all humanity. We just have to make a grab at them and experience happiness through winning at life. Indeed, a pragmatic recipe for success.

Hooked at the beginning as he talks about his life and the fact he only read a single book like me - but after the half way point the amount of references to his other books started to do my head in. Happy for his success, and the intro made me feel more validated, but the rest was not as relevant for someone trying / wanting to make films for a living.
