All Ethan wanted to do was take his girlfriend to Pixelcon and watch the release coverage for Serra Online, a virtual role-playing game. The game sounded better than Ethan could imagine, from new classes to unstoppable magics, but the icing on the cake was a chance to be one of the first to play it. After an easy decision to play a Gladiator, he woke up in a new world separated from the one he loves the most. Stephanie only went to that gaming convention to appease her boyfriend and somehow ended up stranded in a strange world controlled by magic. Lost and traumatized, she has one goal, to find Ethan. For security? Maybe. For love? Possibly. To skin him alive for dragging her into this god-forsaken place? Most likely. While both Ethan and Stephanie have the same desire, their paths back to each other could not be further apart. What will a tank do when he is separated from his pocket-cleric? What is a healer to do when she is lost in a cruel and unforgiving world? Get a dog and start a collection of plucked-out eyeballs, of course.
A. W. Northcutt or Andrew, never Andy, was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. In 2014 he moved to Denver, Colorado for the beautiful weather, yeah, let's go with beautiful weather, and wonderful scenery. His taste in literature varies nearly as much as his taste in music, but his heart belongs to Science Fiction and Fantasy. His love for Litrpg comes from a lifetime of playing video games and investing thousands of hours into MMORPGs. When he is not writing outdoors, or gardening, Andrew loves to spend time with his animal companion, Zeke, the 150lbs Doberman-German shepherd mix that's never far from his side.
Entertaining and a great addition to the litrpg genre
Story line is engaging with fleshed out characters that each feel unique. Litrpg elements are well placed and power levels are consistent and properly explained without walls of over explained data. Overall a great read and I can't wait for the next book! If you're looking for a solid litrp I'd highly recommend this book!
I want to start on a positive in that the narration was well done and some aspects of this story are very original and that is why this is a 4 star rather than a 3 star rating. The author is obviously a fan of the land series by Aleron Kong and manages to drop a few references and pays homage and while not borrowing too heavily and remaining an original work. I have 3 main issues with this story. The MC is very OP and plot armor is applied liberally. The constant bickering between the MC and the Gnome Necromancer is not done it a way that serves the story but is really just annoying. The character system give attribute points for way too many things. The story was good enough to finish and I love settlement build stories so I might check out the next one but not with much enthusiasm.
Serra Online is the first book in this series, and it's pretty good. Chaos is desired, so what better way to introduce that then to drop a hundred thousand humans into the world and watch the madness that ensues. Fun story, and it even had a little settlement building thrown in for good measure. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Fantastic characters and a well thought out story line. If you have a fondness for statistics, you'll love this book. I can't wait for more from this new author!
