Fanged After Forty #1

Bitten in the Midlife

Rate this book
Jilted at the altar a month before her fortieth birthday. Poor Hailey. Midlife really does have a crisis. Or is it that midlife is the crisis? Either way, it sucks.

Hailey Whitfield can’t take anymore run-ins with her ex. It’s time for a big change.

She’s never considered moving away, but it’s her best plan yet. Bonus – her bestie lives next door! However, her new neighbor is… weird, to say the least. Extremely hot, but odd. So are his friends. But Hailey will take strange neighbors over facing her lying, cheat, deadbeat ex-fiancé all day, any day.

Finding a job in a new town is more challenging than she realizes. With her savings depleted from the move, Hailey has to suck it up and take what she gets. After taking a job as a private nurse for an injured bounty hunter, things start to look up.

Then a skip falls into her lap. Okay, sure. She was being nosy and reading an incoming fax intended for her patient. But with a little encouragement, Hailey takes on the task of tracking down the skip. It’s easy money. Right?

Wrong. This skip is far more than Hailey bargained for. And her life is about to change in a very bloody and pointy kind of way. What a bite in the… Well, you know.

With the help of her witchy best friend and her new, very pale neighbor, Hailey is going to collect her bounty.

Or die trying.

Reading this at the end of a long exhausting day! So probably more generous than I’d normally be. The book was cute 🤷🏾‍♀️. Nothing special, just a standard girl becomes a vampire, hot neighbor is a vamp, I do like that she goes out to solve her problems and doesn’t depend on her “maker”to solve them for her. flamboyant characters 😒 side eye at the stereotype of Luke there; and vampires. Characters aren’t fully fleshed out so hopefully that changes going forward. But overall not bad, not great.

Janet Evanovich’s ‘Stephanie Plum’ meets Michelle Rowen’s ‘Immortality Bites’. Though, I have to say that these ladies are a lot more like Ranger than Stephanie when it comes to their abilities to successfully bring back a skip. This story was a lot of fun. Having read both of those series, this book felt like catching up with an old familiar friend. And, with an ending worthy of the ‘Twilight Saga’, I’m definitely coming back to find out what happens next.

This was such a fun story, full of many things 'new' for our mc, Hailey. She gets quite the adventure after being jilted and I enjoyed the lol moments as I followed along. Can't wait for the next book :)

Knowing about witches and vampires is one thing, BEING one... eh not quite the same!
We briefly met Hailey in A Haunting Midlife. when she came to meet Necromancer Ava Harper at the home she was selling.. Well this is Hailey 's story.
The book starts as Hailey is moving in. She and her best friend and now next door neighbour Kendra (a witch) are watching as the movers carry Hailey's belongings into her new home.and Kendra gives her the lowdown on the neighbours, especially the weird ones with the black shutters, blacked out windows and gothic embellishments, home to the local vampire boss Jaxon and his entourage.
As is common in books of this ilk, Hailey's love life has gone disastrously wrong and at a time in her life she expected to be settled and happy, she is starting again. A qualified nurse she soon finds a new job, a private nurse to an injured middle age bounty hunter. Cleo. At the lure of fast money and a little knowledge of tracking, skips and perps Hailey and Kendra are soon On a quest to bring in an easy bale jumper, except well she has fangs!
And then the real adventure begins.
There are obstacles, obviously. For one, having not got permission and gone through the hoops and roundabouts required to bring a new vampire into the fold Jaxon could get into serious trouble with the vampire council. But he is intent on training her, whilst she pushed away her growing attraction to him, because what would a centuries old good looking vampire boss want with Hailey, middle age nurse newbie.

Boruff and Davis work well together, and write a good tale in this genre with the older heroine. It does have the usual tropes The self deprecating heroine, her confident beautiful lawyer and witch best friend, the over the top well connected big brother, the good looking male love interest (who is actually paranormal and not a sheriff/detective/law enforcement for a slight change of pace) This is fast paced, no long explanations or recovery time, no depression at the change in circumstances just chapter after chapter of can do. Though how Hailey manages burning the candle art both ends I do not know! And more people are aware of vampires than you would think despite the fact they are now rare, (having been hunted to almost extinction because of their previous practices though they have changed now of course)

There are a few things mentioned that I think are clues for what's to come, the over bearing other older brother (who we haven't met yet despite being over bearing) but it was a good read to take you out of reality for an hour or two, it's by authors who are established in this genre so they tend to know what works and doesn't. I have no doubt Ava and crew from Shipton Harbor will make an appearance at some point, We are left on a cliff hanger so I look forward to the next book to find out the outcome and what troubles 2 vampires and 1 witch bounty hunters can get into.

One things for sure Duane (Dog)Lee Chapman the Bounty Hunter of old has nothing on these ladies!

This is book one of the Fanged After Forty series and the main character is Hailey Whitfield, who has moved back next door to where her best friend lives, after being jilted at the altar, just before she turned forty. She sold everything and has managed to get a new place to stay, but now she needs a new job and she puts out feelers for all sorts of nursing jobs. The first one to contact her is for a private nurse and carer for a woman who was injured doing her work as a (human) bounty hunter. She and her friend Kendra, who is a witch, watch the movers bring in all her boxes and furniture, while they sit and admire them. Kendra tells her a bit about her neighbours and she has to guess about the inhabitant of the home across the road, which has blacked out windows, finally figuring out he is a vampire, but only after loads of hints from Kendra!
When he brings over a house warming gift she gets to meet him in person and sees how handsome and fit he is, but finds herself tongue-tied when she tries to thank him. Hailey needs a well-paying job to restart her life, but her new job isn’t going to be enough. Her first husband was a bounty hunter and used to talk about a lot of his cases and have her help with his paperwork, and finding her new client is still getting offers of work in that field and how much she could earn, makes her keen to take on a case for herself. Kendra can do a locating spell and they are only going after easy skip cases. She reckons it will be easy money and she won’t have to ask either of her older brothers for any help, not that she ever would! Her life changes completely, when she and Kendra believe they have their first case cornered, but Hailey ends up with a bite on her neck and her life is forever changed! Only her strange neighbour Jaxon, is going to be able to help her adjust, along with those under his protection, to the new rules of her altered life. Rules that Jax himself has broken, in order to save her life from a rogue vampire.
Her adventures continue with her new friends, as well as her witch bestie Kendra and even her brother Luke, who is there more for a certain piece of eye candy than anything else. The bounty hunting continues, but they take a bit more care now, with Hailey determined to stop the rogue who caused all of this. Hailey has to adjust to a lot of changes in her life and having to give up all the things she was used to, but there are some huge advantages to her second chance at life, but also some danger in the offing, as a competitor makes his presence known! An exciting start to this series and I can’t wait to read more. Having mature characters will no doubt allow this series to be open to a much wider audience, bringing lots of life experiences to the tale. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Bitten in the Midlife begins the Fanged After Forty series (which is a spin-off of the Witching After Forty series) with a delightfully funny and engaging tale of one woman’s slightly out of control life after being jilted at the altar… and falling into a world she only knew bits and pieces of before. Hailey might have a witch as a best friend, but there’s more than witchcraft happening around her new life and Hailey is about to discover a world that is both fascinating and dangerous.

If you are a reader of Paranormal Women’s Fiction and the Witching After Forty series then you might have briefly met Hailey in A Haunting Midlife. She’s now in her new home, attempting to set up her new life and get on with whatever comes next for her. You don’t have to have read the earlier series to enjoy this one, but if you can go back to Witching After Forty, you’ll find fun, engaging, likable characters who may have a connection to Hailey’s series. The authors say, and I agree, that you could pick up this first book in the new series and dive right in and enjoy yourself immensely – but if you want more background then it’s available in the earlier series.

I liked Hailey from the start. She’s fed up, mad, and ready to put the past behind her immediately. But, there’s that pesky thing about life that requires cash for groceries and such so she’s taken on a private duty nursing job. Her patient, Cleo, is a midlife bounty hunter (and I hope we see more of Cleo because she’s one of my favorite secondary characters in this book). Since Hailey is no stranger to the bounty hunting game, even if it was only as a helper, that peak at the new fax about a skip was just too tempting to pass up. Well. That fax and this particular skip are about to change Hailey’s life… forever. Literally Forever.

I had such a good time with Bitten in the Midlife and chuckled while shaking my head throughout it. Without giving too much away, I’m in love myself with Hailey’s potential love interest, the possibilities for them are endless. With a touch of magic, some encounters with danger, and a not-so-secure and safe future ahead this story was the perfect way to enter into Hailey’s new world. I’m already hooked on this series and waiting impatiently for the release of Staked in the Midlife.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Bitten in the Midlife starts out with an appealing protagonist—as the title implies, the protagonist is not a fresh-faced girl who has no life experience. Instead, Hailey is in her forties and has an established life because she’s no longer dealing with acne or teenage crushes. Granted, her life is in a bit of a turmoil right now. She’s divorced and was just jilted at the altar by almost-ex number two, and starting over in a new town to help put her past behind her. Although she has her best friend Kendra living nearby and a place she’s just moved into, she has little else to her name—no guy in her life, no job, no cash, and no plan for what comes next.

All of her problems are solved in a rather unexpected way when she decides to earn some cash on the side with something that her ex used to do—bounty hunting. But when her first job gets her in over her head, she has to adjust to her new vocation and quickly. Because her life just changed for the supernatural. With help from her sexy vampire neighbor and her witchy best friend, Hailey just might survive her major career—and undead—change in her life.

This is book 1 in a great urban fantasy series (a spinoff from a similar series about witchcraft). It reminds me a bit of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series, except with a more age-appropriate protagonist. The main character is sort of clueless about the world she finds herself in, although in an endearing way. She takes no guff, although she’s okay with taking advice that helps her out. And she has an enthusiasm for life that only strengthens after she joins the supernatural world, which translates into a fun read. I’d definitely recommend it for fans of urban fantasy looking for good worldbuilding, a bit of mystery, and the slow sizzle of romance.

BITTEN IN THE MIDLIFE is the first book in the Fanged After Forty series. Note from the author says, “this series is best read after A Haunting Midlife, but is 100% able to be read on its own.”

We met Hailey briefly in A HAUNTING MIDLIFE since she was buying Ava’s old house.

Hailey is starting a new life in Philly, luckily with her best friend next door and a fabulous brother close by to keep it fun and interesting. After a few twists, turns, bumps, and bruises, she is really starting a new, um, death.

That new life includes the sexy-as-sin neighbor across the street and his housemates. They end up all working together to work as bounty hunters – more lucrative than the personal nursing she was originally doing! It looks like Hailey is going to have all of the danger, adventure, and fun she could hope for in this second chance at life.

This was an exciting first book and I cannot wait to see where it leads! I’m looking forward to the next adventure this group finds.

Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via Booksprout, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

I seldom give out 5 stars on a first read but this is a great read!

Fall is fast approaching where I live, which means that my favorite day of the year, Halloween, will soon be here! :) It's at this time of the year that I turn to "Halloween" stories full of ghosts, goblins, witches, talking cats/other animals, werewolves, and vampires! So, enough about me and onto the book.

The heroine of the story is a 40-year-old woman named Hailey who is divorced and her second attempt at romance left her standing at the altar literally. So, she moved to a new area/town to be near her best friend Kendra (who is a witch). Across the street live a house of vampires. Hailey and Kendra decide to become bounty hunters and catch individuals who skip out on their bail/bond.

The turning into a vampire ensues when the "girls" go out on their first bounty hunt and Hailey is attacked by the "jumper" who is a vampire. She is drained and left for dead. Kendra calls their across-the-street neighbor, Jaxon (Jax for short) and then the fun really begins.

Be aware that this is a short book (244 pages) and book 2 is even shorter. So short, in fact, that I read both books last night.

If you like short, delightful, entertaining stories/books about the vampires and the newly undead...please read this book. I immensely enjoyed both of them and will start book 3 tonight.

Great start for the Laugh out Loud Funny Paranormal Cozy Mystery At It's BEST!!!

Hailey Whitfield, the new owner of Ava Harper's old house, who moves to Philadelphia to get away from her past, her ex and to be close to her best friend, Kendra, who is a witch. Her new neighbor is a vampire boss Jaxon and his gang. Hailey gets a private nurse job helping an injured bounty hunter, Cleo. Hailey's life is turning upside down and inside out when she decides to track down the bail jumper who turns into a rogue vampire and turn Hailey to vampire. Hailey need to learn and adapt into her new life with help from her bestie and her handsome neighbor.

I love this book; it's laugh out loud funny, full of mystery, paranormal, action, adventure, humor and romance. I really enjoy the good fast-paced story line with delightful characters, very entertaining and hard to put down. The story is well put together and the plot keeps you entertained as you try to figure out what would happen next. This book is a must read for paranormal cozy mystery fans. Bitten indeed

Meet Hailey, new owner of Ava Harper's Philadelphia home. (Ava is the main character from Witching After Forty series)
Her new to her house is in a quiet neighborhood and right next door to her best friend Kendra's house, after a terrible break up what more could a middle aged woman want? Well her super hot fanged neighbor for 1.

On the hunt for a job she begins working for a bounty hunter named cleo while she is laid up from a injury. Curiosity gets the better of Hailey and she decides to pick up a bounty from the sheets in Cleo's office. Recruiting her best friend, did I mention Kendra was a witch? Things do go as planned and Hailey ends up in a situation she could have never imagined.

Now she is an unsanctioned baby vamp and learning her new world.
I found the book very injoyable to read. It was a bit difficult for me to get into but entirely worth it. This is the character development I have came to expect from the duo of Lia Davis & LA Boruff. I look forward to more of this and the Witching After Forty series from these 2.

Moving to a new town to get away from a cheating ex, our heroine desperately needs a new job. But that new job leads to yet another and suddenly life is getting a lot more interesting.

This is book one of the series, so a good place to start.

Let's call this a paranormal mystery for lack of an easier definition. There is a lot of things going on here and I have to tell you that all of them are good. We get a fascinating setting with bounty hunters, witches and other paranormal beings. We get a diverse and fun cast of characters, including our heroine who is a bit on the feisty (and snoopy) side herself. And we get an intriguing plot that includes a nice bit of action and humor, with perhaps just a touch of romance (but who really needs that distraction). All of it comes together in a wonderful blend that made for a highly enjoyable story. I am definitely ready for the next one!

Highly recommended.

Hailey moved to Philadelphia to have a fresh start after her fiancé dumped her. She has her best friend and her family that all live close to her. Hailey also meets her new neighbor as well. Hailey is hired to care for a bounty hunter that was hurt. Hailey really enjoys the her company and the stories she tells. Hailey decides to take one of the jumps. Hailey is attacked by the jump and hurt. Hailey's life is changed because of her decision. Hailey wakes up to find out she is now a vampire and her hot neighbor is her sire.

This just the beginning of what happens. The author throws some interesting twists into story. You will really enjoy all the different characters introduced in this new series. Once you are done, you will be wanting more. I recommend reading this new series, you won't regret it.

Fantastic first in series.

I adore this book. It started a little slow, but once the second to third chapter hit—this baby reached through my kindle and grabbed me by the throat, not letting go until the cliffie at the end. The characters are well fleshed out, the FMC is actually familiar if you've read the authors' kin series (Witching after Forty). The world is well built. I can easily picture this in a movie reel inside my head.

This has the right blend (for me) of comedy, romance, and mystery with a flash of action. I can see myself rereading this, I recommend it for anyone reading this review, or not reading this review.

Lastly, I am so excited for book 2. I don't know how many are to be in the series (is that public knowledge yet?), but I am excited to find out.

Great spin-off from the Witching After 40 series (you do not have to read that series first). Hailey is trying to adjust to her new house, her new town, heck...her new life, after being jilted at the alter. At least her bestie lives next door. And there's a cute neighbor across the street. So what if he's pale, only comes out at night, and likes his food liquid and warm and red...

What a fun book!! Loved Hailey, her bestie Kendra, Paige, Jax...and all the characters. They are fun and funny. The storyline is interesting and made me laugh several times. "The Bond Girls. *snicker* I can't wait to read more books in this series.

I received a copy of this book from the author via Bookfunnel. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.

I’m loving these series where women are in their 40’s who have been cheated on by their exes so they start a new life in a new town and from there their lives are never the same again. This is Hailey’s story she also knows about the supernatural because her best friend is a witch and now Hailey lives across the road from vampires and the first night she moves in she meets Jax when he brings her a basket full of goodies. I loved this story the characters and the chuckle worthy moments and I can’t wait to read more stories like this from these two amazing authors and I definitely recommend this book.

Brand new series from L.A. Boruff and Lia Davis and all I can say is she's hit another winner!

We first met Hailey in A Haunting Midlife when she met Ava Harper and purchased her home. Now, this is Hailey's story.

This is an amazingly fun story to read. And you will laugh out loud while reading.

As with most of the other stories in the "after forty" genre Hailey's love life is on the outs. Bad breakup and totally "off" men and is starting completely over in a new town next to her best friend.

No more details or I'd give too much away. But suffice it to say you will have a great time reading it!

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW of Bitten in The Midlife the first book in the Fanged After Forty series by Lia Davis and L.A. Boruff. When Hailey decides to take on Bounty Hunting, she gets more than she bargains for. This is a humorous and delightfully entertaining read. A strong cast of characters, some sexual tension (this is a clean read... so far), a bunch of hairy situations and some sexy vampires make this a promising series. There is a set-up for the next book that leaves our clan in a precarious predicament... I can't wait to see what happens next!

Hailey Whitfield and Kendra, in their 40s, decide to become bounty hunters. Unfortunately for Hailey, the hunter became the hunted, as the hunted turned out to be a vampire, who attacked Hailey. She was saved from death only by being “turned” by Jax, the master vampire of the Philadelphia area. As a new vampire, she has many, many lifestyle changes to adapt to, which she describes humorously, sometimes enthusiastically (like superpowers), sometimes regretfully (like no more beach time). She finds out she is “undocumented” and in danger of being terminated (staked or beheaded) if she doesn’t get approved. On top of that, a vampire is out to take over Jax’s territory. A very exciting midlife!

What a fun start to the series. I absolutely love Hailey and how she deals with everything she faces. Hailey knows she needs money and her new client is a bounty hunter. When she saw a notice for a job, she decided to try to become a bounty hunter too. However, this job changed her whole life. She was saved by her potential love interest. I loved how she takes what happens and uses it to her advantage and develops her own bounty hunting team. I loved all of her friends and can not wait to read more about their adventures. I highly recommend this book. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Hailey is trying to move on after being dumped by her ex. She finds a house next door to her best friend and gets a job. While taking care of Cleo, Cleo mentions that she is a bail bondsman. Hailey thinks it sounds interesting and wants to help. Hailey finds what she thinks is an easy skip, but actually the gal is a vampire and bites her. Jax, the elder of the area, decides he needs to save Hailey even though it is against the rules. Hailey is learning to be a vampire and to be a bail bondsman and is realizing that things aren't that easy. This story had some interesting turns and was very enjoyable!

Good

**WARNING! Cliffhanger**
This ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger/book-hook for the next book in the series.

An entertainingly fast paced story about a forty-something, who becomes a vampire just as she is starting over.
This book is partly related to the witching after forty series; though it can be read separately, the characters are referenced in this book.

If you enjoy paranormal women’s fiction (paranormal/urban fantasy with mature heroines) then you’ll enjoy this series.

SURPRISE!

Don't blink your eyes. Hailey, after moving across country to start over, just needed to earn a little extra cash. Little did she know the bail jumper she went after had been turned into a rogue vampire. In the blink of an eye she went from the vamp beating her up to waking up 3 days later a vampire herself. Can't wait to see where this story goes. I'm betting Jax is her true mate but didn't want to throw that at her right away with everything else she's dealing with.

This is a great book. It is the 1st book of Fanged after Forty. I love that it is about a middle-aged woman who has been divorced and trying to make ends meet. She was a bounty hunter and went after someone who she at the time thought was human well it was a vampire. Now she is a vampire also and learning how to be a vampire over forty. It has parts of laughter, thrillers, and excitement. I look forward to reading more from this series.
