After an EMP knocked out power around the globe, Matthew Riley and his family are finding their way to survive while realization of their dangerous new reality sinks in. It was a struggle to reunite in the immediate aftermath, but the fallout from the dangerous journey may be even worse.
Other desperate souls are converging on any place that might offer hope, and the Rileys’ hotel in Galena, Illinois, is a prime target. With food running short and medicine almost out, the Rileys will need to find supplies. But they’re not the only ones looking.
While the family works together at the hotel, Matthew’s brother-in-law, Max, works to escape from prison to reunite with his family and the relative safety they offer. But dangerous enemies have their eyes on him and may put everyone at risk.
With resources running out, family is the only bond that can be counted on. But those bonds are strained and frayed as the tensions of the new world begin to pull them apart. How can one family survive when the world has turned upside down?
Grace Hamilton is the prepper pen-name for a bad-ass, survivalist momma-bear of four kids, and wife to a wonderful husband. After being stuck in a mountain cabin for six days following a flash flood, she decided she never wanted to feel so powerless or have to send her kids to bed hungry again. Now she lives the prepper lifestyle and knows that if SHTF or TEOTWAWKI happens, she’ll be ready to help protect and provide for her family.
Combine this survivalist mentality with a vivid imagination (as well as a slightly unhealthy day dreaming habit) and you get a prepper fiction author. Grace spends her days thinking about the worst possible survival situations that a person could be thrown into, then throwing her characters into these nightmares while trying to figure out "What SHOULD you do in this situation?"
It’s her wish that through her characters, you will get to experience what life will be like and essentially learn from their mistakes and experiences.
I really loved Book 1 but felt disappointed with this one. It was still a decent read, well written and pacey, but I had too many issues with it to rate it any higher.
The book started with a stupid decision. After what had happened to Katherine and Allison on their journey back from Chicago, Katherine's choice regarding getting past the bikers was ridiculously stupid - too stupid to live in fact. She really didn't think through what might happen or the risk she was putting Allison and herself at. Any normal person would have tried to .
I also had issues with the Max storyline. Given he set off well before Colin and walked continuously for the best part of 2 days before stopping he would have been well ahead of Colin. . It was, to put it simply, impossible for Colin to have caught up with him a few hours later! SIGH. Whilst I can allow for some stretching of reality, given this is a dystopian tale, I can't accept unrealistic actions/events.
The final third of the book was much better, for me, even if I had to ignore the fact that Colin now couldn't catch up with a man so injured he kept passing out. There was just enough character growth to keep me invested, this is perhaps more of a plot driven story which may have coloured my view somewhat. I'm not sure if this suffers from middle book syndrome or if I struggled with it because it sailed so far from the shore of believability that I could barely see more than a dot on the horizon. I do know that had this been my first experience of the author it would also have been my last. However I AM invested in the story enough that in all likeliness I will complete the trilogy.
This is book two of the EMP Catastrophe series and continues the story of the Riley family, as they struggle to reunite at their rundown River Rock hotel, they are in the midst of renovating to reopen. It was a dream for years for husband and wife, Matthew and Kathleen, with somewhat reluctance from their late teens daughter Allison and younger son Patton a bit more eager. They were joined in the endeavour by Matthew’s parents, David and Ruth, with David recovering from a serious heart attack and supposed to be taking things easy. Matthew and David were stranded in Madison, over eighty miles from Galena, Illinois, by an EMP event, whilst Matthew’s wife Kathleen and their daughter were in Chicago, visiting Kathleen’s brother Max in prison, nearly a hundred and ninety miles away from home. David’s wife Ruth is back at the hotel, with her grandson Patton helping her to clean rooms.
When the power goes out and their cars and phones don’t work, the two pairs who are far away from home, have no idea how quickly normal society will descend into chaos and get them all caught up in danger. Conflicting attitudes between the family members bring about some dangerous confrontations on the long road home. David is an army vet and very worldly wise, whereas his son Matthew sees the good in everyone and expects people to help each other when the problems start to appear and be nice to others. Their trek towards home is a long one and they have a different journey than Kathleen and Allison. The men make an acquaintance with a young woman called Jade, who has lived on the streets for a number of years and has gained some serious streetwise creds and life skills. David immediately trusts her, but Matthew doesn’t and it is his attitude that causes a lot of issues between the three of them, which could almost lose them their lives!
Kathleen and Allison have a longer journey to get home and luckily with Kathleen’s direct problem solving, they aren’t having to make it by foot, but it is still not an easy one. Being women, they are seen as easy prey to some and it is only Max’s forceful words as the prison is locked down, that gives her a bug out bag and a weapon to protect them both. They find themselves in multiple dangerous situations with groups of men, one not far from home, leaving them both scarred and changed in both body and mind! There are lots who fancy making the hotel their new centre of operations and bolt hole away from the masses. But they don’t know how desperately short of supplies and medication for David, they are short of. Nor is the hotel in a fit state of repair as yet! Max warned Kathleen to run as far away from the prison as she could, as soon as he made it out of there, and now he is looking to escape the danger he faces from the cartel and their thugs all around him. What he doesn’t realise, is that the cartel thugs know about his sister and where he will be heading and they will quite happily take revenge against members of his family, to force him to come with them to the cartel HQ.
They should be stronger as a family, once all back together again, but their bonds are strained by the events they have all had to go through. The addition of Jade brings its own disagreements and the family cannot agree on whether she can stay with them or not. Supplies are running low and none of them have the practical skills to survive in a world without power and no way of obtaining supplies from nearby towns that have already been looted. Only Jade has gun skills and a hard shell from years on the streets, to be able to help protect them. David says they need to make connections with locals who can trade with them for resources they need to survive, but one local who already tried to take the hotel for himself, has turned Matthew in particular against his father’s idea. It was quite a change to see characters who weren’t already well prepared and trained in survival techniques, being the main part of the storyline. It puts them on a par with lots of the readers and lets them make mistakes and have to learn from them very quickly, or they or someone in their family could die. Normal people facing difficult and life changing circumstances, and how they have to adapt to their new situation. Jade is a fantastic and complex character in this series, love or hate her. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Book #2 in Grace Hamilton's newest EMP series. Grace Hamilton wirtes some the best EMP series available. Her books are very well written. The characters are well developed and genuine, you'd know them if you met them in the grocery store, except grocery stores no longer exist. Each series is original, they are not just rewritten versions of each other. I enjoyed every one of her books and am looking forward to the next one.
Once again in Book 2 of this awesome trilogy, Grace Hamilton the author amazes you with the way which she is able to creat such real characters that makes you truly feel them all and their thoughts, in fact at times you get so mad thinking how you would do thing differently which proves that it feels amazingly real. Perfect choice letting Matthew E. Berry narrate this book, together a masterpiece is created !!!
⚙️⚙️ONE SPINE TINGLING ADVENTURE⚙️⚙️ Vicious vagrants val! Grace doesn't miss a beat unleashing one incredibly tantalizing, skillfully enthralling, sinfully addictive delectably delicious, boot-stomping rock-my-world landslide, exhibiting this earth quaking thrill ride, launching this gem to staggering heights. One heart pounding, pulse racing, adrenaline pumping, nailbiting, jaw dropping, spine tingling, block busting bombshell, putting our characters through their paces wrapping this jewel up sleek, shiny and tight. A churning vortex chocked-full of dangerous struggles and challenging triumphs, while attentive to the perilous twists and wicked turns unfolding, crumbling barriers and pelted perimeters solidify as limitations are enhanced and tested, futures are forged and revelations are unearthed, fusing this bad boy together seamlessly. The characters, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits add depth and diversity, transforming into amazing personalities. The scenes are abundantly descriptive with colorful details that blend and flow, creating a majestic backdrop that's so rich and lively it feels as though you're part of the story instead of on the sidelines, feeling everything the characters feel. Fabulous job Grace, thanks for sharing this little treasure with us.
After reading bk1 of this series and loving it I certainly wanted to read this one as soon as I could. The cover fits well with the first book and I would say depicts Matthew and his father David on the cover. Even if I hadn’t read bk1 the cover would make me pick up this book to learn more about it.
It is so hard to review this book without giving spoilers and I guess with referring to things that happened in bk1 there may be some small ones revealed, so be warned, only read ahead if you have already started this series.
This book basically picks up where bk1 left off with Kathleen and Allison faced with the daunting prospect of having to walk past some rather rough looking bikers who are looting a van of food & supplies that obviously broke down when the EMP hit. With their previous experience with gangs, that they have met along their journey, I’d say they are right to be super cautious. Kathleen instructs her rather traumatised daughter Allison that if things turn ugly, she must run off and leave her mother to get help from the hotel. It’s hard to believe they have come so far and have adapted and survived to be so close to home and then be faced with this hopefully last barrier between them and their home and family. When the crucial moment comes and Kathleen believes things are going to turn nasty, she signals Allison to run! Matthew is both elated and devastated to see his daughter running towards him on the property surrounding the hotel. He is happy and relieved to see Allison yet immediately worried and thinking the worst when he realises her mother, his wife, Kathleen is not with her. He takes Allison inside the house where his mother Ruth helps to calm the hyperventilating teen down long enough to get a rough idea what has happened. Naturally Matthew heads right off to help his wife.
What occurs between Matthew & Kathleen and the biker gang could end up coming back to haunt them later as they try to survive and make allies. There is also a brief mention of Samuel who had held Ruth and Patton hostage in their own home.
Though I went through sympathy and then cursing his character Max is certainly an interesting individual, and is pretty central in this book with his added point of view. When Max realises something is badly wrong inside the prison, with only a few of the same guards doing the rounds with meals being delivered to cells he decides he needs to get out sooner rather than later. It seems it’s only an ever, shortening matter of time before the prison guards are overcome and the prison is taken over by the prisoners. If the prisoners take over and the imprisoned Cartel members have free rein, Max knows they will come after him and there will be no guards to drag them off him. Colin has already made his feelings crystal clear with the amount and frequencies of beatings he has doled out to Max. If Colin and the other Cartel prisoners get hold of Max, they may well kill him. When Max does escape and he either naively or recklessly heads right for his sister Kathleen and the Hotel on the outskirts of Galena. At times in the book, I didn’t know exactly what to think of Max and his character. He without a doubt loves his sister and his niece and nephew, but he doesn’t think things through. It soon becomes clear if he thinks he can leave his problems behind he is naive as he encounters Colin on more than one occasion in this book. The relationship between brother and sister is quite interesting. At first it seems Kathleen can see no wrong and feels sorry for Max, almost mothering him, Max on the other is quite wily and tells Kathleen only the details of his journey that he wants her to know. It’s not long until this has to quickly change, when because of him, Max’s young nephew, Patton is placed in serious danger.
Looking back at the book after finishing it, a lot of it is about the different relationships between the featured characters. Matthew and David are continually butting heads in this book almost vying for the “alpha male” position. Kathleen is closing herself off from her husband Matthew hiding what happened to herself and Allison. At times, Kathleen appears paranoid and is really quite nasty towards Jade, declaring she doesn’t want her to stay and continually saying she isn’t part of the family. Though her attitude softens when she see’s Jade put herself between Allison and Patton and imminent danger. They also have a heart to heart which actually ends up helping Kathleen come to terms with what she did to protect Allison in bk1 and results in her finally opening up to Matthew. However just as Kathleen is becoming more accepting of Jade, Matthew turns on the teenage girl demanding she leave despite the protests from David, Allison and Patton.
New character to the book is Wyatt Carpenter who is living with a small group of people at the Carpenter gun club. The fact he reaches out to the Riley family at the River Rock Hotel. To begin with Matthew insists the hide the attempt of contact and invitation to meet up with those at the Carpenter Gun Club, but once again he butts heads and finds himself on the opposing die of an argument with his father, David.
Theres a lot of instances where the characters head off alone, not thinking of any possible consequences and end up landing themselves in trouble, needing to be rescued by the others. These incidents along with the Riley families experience with bad people out to take what they have from them, do eventually show them that they do need allies and friends in the area. They just need to choose them wisely.
The book ends on yet another great cliff hanger with David experiencing chest pains and another probable heart attack. Its not just the immediate attack that presents worries and difficulties, it sets Matthew off thinking about what will happen when David’s medication runs out? What if someone is seriously injured?
My immediate thoughts upon finishing the book were that I had found it to be action packed, with amazing imperfect believable characters, set in a world that has suffered a catastrophic change.
To sum up there is still much to do at the River Rock Hotel to ensure it’s a place of safety for his family, along with creating a wider circle of friends with the necessary knowledge and trades that will make surviving and living somewhat easier. All this and more certainly make me want to read the next and final book as soon as I can!
ERUPTING DANGER: EMP CATASTROPHE BK 2 by Grace Hamilton
This is a well-contained novel, I haven't read book 1 in the series, yet I had no issues with knowing what was going on. The ending seemed to come too fast, but there was some conclusion, yet you know there's another book.
The Riley family is trying to keep themselves together since the EMP took down society as they knew it. Ruth and David, senior citizens; Matthew-their son with his family Kathleen, Allison, and Patton; Max, Kathleen's brother; Jade, a young woman who mistakenly thought David and Matthew were the enemy but is trying to fit in with the family.
The Riley's own a large hotel in rural Illinois. They are trying to hold off evil forces and fortify their boundaries to keep themselves safe. They find out that it won't do them any good to be paranoid about everyone left in the world, they are going to have to trust some people, or these city folk won't survive.
Much appreciation to #netgalley @gracehamilton for the complimentary copy of #eruptingdanger I was under no obligation to post a review.
Why the author has to make the men weak is not a mistake. Its the sign of the times. The author should do more research on weapons, Her bio says she's a prepper which I highly doubt she doesn't know a Glock has no manual safety, shotgun doesn't have bullets but shells,A shoulder wound can be a mortal wound. And what the jeck is a car-shield? Also she states "David held the pistol Ruth the Glock" They are both pistols. Also tattoos don't turn Blue with age, prison tats are blue cause its only color available in prison. If they have an old diesel tractor it will most likely run after a EMP NO ELECTRONICS . IF THE girls heard a the truck in the city it could not sneak up on them on a back road with no other sound around plus a city boy would not first be able to maneuver a truck in all that stalled traffic plus they would not be joy riding there. also chest compressions only break ribs about a third of the time. Ok read but author must do her research or risk losing customer's and stop trying to impress us with some silly big words
This series is very intense is really brings to life the dystopian vibe of trying to survive in a world gone to ruin.
The Riley family is still standing strong and trying to survive doing their best to to stay strong after the global EMP strike.
They still have the goal of returning to the Riley hotel but that continues to become more dangerous as each day passes because hostile forces (what I guess I would call mercenary or perhaps just lawless citizens) have their sites set on its resources and also want to take control as local resources continue dwindling.
As finite resources become harder and harder to get and those who want them more ruthless by the day. Will the Riley's prevail or will they fall prey to those that want what belongs to them?
I am super excited for the next installment and I recommend this fast paced dystopian read.
Novel probably should be rated 3 stars but I was feeling generous when I rated this.
An overall okay novel with an interesting plot that had tons of action, suspense and battles/fights. Most of the fights felt unnecessary as their motives were weak. I really hate revenge stories at the end of the world. You’d think you’d be more concerned with fighting for survival, not going after some guy for some minor misdeed or loss of pride.
The characters were really stupid. I found Matthew was weak as he refused to stand for things he believed in and was willing to bend over far too much for his family. He infuriated me even more when he later agreed with his initial statements because the rest of his family said they had been the right decisions.
Katherine was stupid and jaded. She put her daughter in danger at the beginning of the novel for no reason, there was a perfectly plausible alternative but she refused to take it (and I’m still not sure why). I also hated how she was so guilt-ridden over the past novel where she killed someone to protect her daughter. Her mopiness got annoying, especially when it felt she got over her PTSD after one small conversation with her family.... if only mental illnesses worked this way.
The pacing wasn’t as strong as I’d hope as the middle dragged.
Overall this was an okay apocalyptic novel with an okay plot, weak characters and slow pacing. I’m interested in the author and the series enough to continue.
The Riley family are doing their best to survive the aftermath of the EMP outage that's global. They are still struggling to make their way home to the Riley's hotel. But it's not just family that's that's converging on their hote. The desperate and the hostal are muling around. Max is still trying to get home from prison. There is danger all around them and their resources are slowly running out. With the tension mounting around, supplies and medicine getting scarce, will the family be able to hold on and survive. Can't wait for the next book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I was infuriated with some of these characters and their responses to one another and their situations! I wanted to climb into the pages and shake some sense into them. They were focusing on all the wrong things! So it was excellent character development and story line that painted a picture of how these people really would respond to the stress. Not a glamorized version where people instantly turn into their best versions when 'it hits the fan. I'm ready to dive into the next book where I'm rooting for these fools to get some clarity and unity. They definitely seemed to be headed toward the right path.
How often do you have an urge to smack a character for being difficult and not seeing what’s in front of them? Grace Hamilton creates characters that are multidimensional, some loveable some not. Just as in real life, there are many shades of grey. Put these people in situations that are life threatening and even the best can fold. Erupting Danger is full of those dangers and challenges, emphasising the need for family to work together. That friendships must be built on and show trust from both sides. Can the Riley’s survive? I can’t wait for the next book!
The Riley family's back in book two of the EMP Catastrophe series and their story continues. The EMP has affected people all over the world causing people to turn against each other. The Riley's are trying to make their way to the family hotel but the crazies are desperate and with each day that passes supplies dwindle and danger increases. Book two is a fast paced read filled with danger, suspense, intrigue, and an ending that left me ready for the next book in this series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
The will to survive is strong. Even if you have to kill someone. To some, that's self defence. To others murder. The second group have to learn to leave with it. Move on. Easier said than done. This book, the second in this series portrays this. A family bond is all they have. Sometimes new members become part of their family. This is an excellent story for survival when life throws every curveball in it's arsenal. An excellent read!!! Enjoyed immensely!!!
I never for into the story, and cared much for the main characters much.Slow in spots and the main character is suppose to be a good people reader but sucks. The brother in law had just one to bag, poor choice.Should have at least two. Ex military father should still know how to do still while skills do lesson over time that stuff never goes away.I know I was out of the army in early 90s I have read five or six eBooks of this type and while I give points on some originally was pretty a difficult to finish.
Amazing story. Writing this review after finishing all 3 in the series. Grace is so good at writing real and flawed characters. Even her main ‘good guys’ do stupid stuff, make mistakes and just screw up from time to time. The thing is that’s how real people are. You will always learn from her stories too. Many survival lessons are to be learned here. Do yourself a favor and pick up this or any of her series, you will not regret it! Mathew Berry is a great narrator. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I had little hope for this group of people. They were raised in an environment that equated killing people intent on you (hopeless as survival candidates). Matthew is the worst of the bunch, with David (a heart attack victim) the best. They have the good fortune of pairing up with a bunch that may make survival possible. The verdict is still out. Is this really a Grace Hamilton book? Not really her style.
Okay yes like some of the other reviewers I did want to shake Matthew and I struggled a bit with some of the story lines but overall this was a refreshing take on this genre and there were some very interesting characters. I would have liked to have known more about the why but that didn't fit within the story parameters so get it. The narrator suited the story. Erupting Danger by Grace Hamilton is an awesome story that I have loved reading. This is book number two in this awesome series that I could not put down and can not wait to read more. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about Sci-Fi.

The Riley family sure has had a rough go since the lights went out. They need to spend more time getting their home secure and thinking about food for the months ahead. Too bad other people are distracting them. Will look forward to the continuation in book 3.
Good book. And will keep your interest to see what happens next. I like that it has no smut and no bad language. Grace still can show anger, a hate and love with out bad language!!! Thank you Grace. I only wish I did not have to wait for continuation as other books are calling me
Most books don't include whole families like this one does. It has everything from the grandparents, parents, kids and a brother in law that can't get his act together until his sister tells him to grow up.
In the post EMP world who do you trust? Should you stay hunkered down with your family? Can you make your home a fortress? These are questions the Riley's must answer.
Well Written , Good storyline, Looking forward to a follow up.
This is 1 of the few books that I'm gonna 5 reading too. Do storyline And follow through . I would recommend it to other friends who like this genreSerious
This series is so believable. I found myself routing for the family and thinking of ideas to do if I were in this situation. Easy to follow the storyline and get connected to the family and friends in this story.
This book is really good . The story of a family unit stranded in different parts of the country ,how they got back home . What each group faced and the consequences the actions of each person had on their humanity .
I loved the story of this family and the chaos they went through trying to stay together in a world gone crazy. I have not read a book by Grace Hamilton that I haven’t enjoyed.
the story was ok but there was to much dragging out the story. there no excitement in searching for food and other things that they needed to survive. there was too much focusing on the things that they had done to survive. to much crying and arguing.
