This was really intense! A captivating, realistic, roller-coaster ride that kept me intrigued till the end! One of those rare books that I was so drawn into that I anxiously awaited for those few hours during the day to read. Definitely will be following this author and reading all of her books. Highly recommend!

So I just finished "Survive" book 2, part of Sally Mason's (Hide & Seek) collection. I have already read her first book to this series "Trapped" and loved it. I can't believe she's working on book 3 already! If you haven't read the first book to this series, I highly recommend you checking that one out first, before reading this one. That way, you will understand who the characters are, what they have been through, and helps you understand the story more. I was thankful to be able to get my hands on part 2, and want to thank the author, Sally for that. She's an amazing author. Ever since I read "Trapped" i was hooked. So, now on to the review.

I think it's unique how all the characters go together, and how some of the characters in book one, carry over to book 2. This book was very interesting. Poor Aeree, the main character, has been through alot. She gets out of prison, and falls in love with the lawyer who helped her with her case. I won't go into details, due to spoilers, but they marry. If you are triggered by rape, sexual assault, cheating, manipulation techniques, bulimia, anorexia, ect. I'm just giving precautions ahead of time for this series. Aeree, has been through rape and sexual assault herself, and that's why she was in prison, due to her dad and her taking revenge on the assailants. Aeree thinks she has it all, a wonderful home, loving husband (Whose gone all the time, because he's a lawyer for big cases) but finds out very soon, that it was all a lie. Her husband Mitch, never loved her, nor was he married to her because he wanted to be. It was all a set up, and she soon finds out that she has been played like a game of chess. She finds out he's been leading a seperate life, is engaged, and the fiance actually has a baby on the way, all while Aeree herself, struggles with bullimia. She struggles with her past, so she throws up her food every time she eats, because her rape destroyed her insides, and made her unable to have children. She feels like all she has left are her looks, so she barely eats, to stay skinny and pretty (which is terrible, and drove me crazy). Throughout the book, Aeree is being followed by a sniper, trying to find some high data stick, that the FBI, and other characters want. Sometimes, I didn't understand what the fuss was all about with the data stick, and wish the entire book wasn't about finding it. This book was different than the first, but still good. I'm willing and ready to read book 3. Aeree has no idea that she is the one actually holding the data stick the whole time, so theirs alot of twists and turns, sudden deaths that make the story suspenseful and interesting. I'm really not crazy about the police and FBI, and honestly wish they wasn't in the entire book. Aeree's story herself would have made it a good book anyways. Theirs alot of characters throughout this book that you think are the culprits, when you find out all along, it had nothing to do with them. Theirs not as much "disturbing" material in this book like their was in the first one "Trapped". Although I liked this book too, I feel like I enjoyed the first book a bit better, just because their wasn't as many characters, and their wasn't a data stick that everyone was after. Some points in the book, I was terrified the sniper might shoot Aeree at any point, but she survives. Everyone else gets sniped around her though. She makes friends with the first books character "Kelsey" and begin a true friendship. They both struggle with past rapes and sexual assaults, so that ultimately brings them together in the end. I think that was really cool. Some parts of this book were confusing, because I feel like alot of the FBI characters kind of intertwined with one another, and I would forget at some points who was who. If a younger person was reading this book (I'm 28) I feel like they might get that impression also. I was glad Mitch was sniped in the beginning, but also wish he would have stayed alive, just so Aeree and Maureen (his double life fiance) could have confronted him. Theirs so many FBI characters, undercover agents, it's ridiculous, and I didn't trust any of them. If you love anything that has to do with classified data, the FBI chasing you, and their real life manipulation tactics, you will probably love this book. As a lover of young adult fiction, I feel like this book is more of an adult book. Maybe that's why I have this book 4 stars instead of 5. I only give 5 stars if the book was perfect, and although I thoroughly appreciated the concept and enjoyed this, the writing is more adult themed than young adult, but that's just my opinion. I have struggled with my weight growing up, but never had the guts to throw my food up, but understood Aeree's pain, and why she did it. Kelsey and her help each other from doing their self destructive behavior (They both have one) and really liked that. Their were times I wanted to scream, because Aeree was manipulated and treated so bad. If I had to choose which book I liked the best, it's the first one, but that's just because it was more easy to understand, and was more young adult themed, and more my type of book. I still love the author, and appreciate and love her writing. I'm glad I've read book two, because now, I can't wait for part 3. Overall, to understand this book better, I highly suggest you read book one first. I give this book 4 stars for being a good read, and entertaining.

Review originally published at my blog, Living a Hundred Lives

Content Warning: Rape, Sexual Harassment

I had so much expectations for this one. Of course, I know it should be a thrilling one since it’s synopsis sounded a lot about hiding and running against a sniper but you see, it’s not the kind of action you’d want to see.

Aeree was a rape victim. Now, this is a sensitive issue. I know it will be hard to cope with a few things but after a few years, she married the attorney in her case (she was accused/guilty of murdering the leader of the gang that raped her). But as a person, she was so hard to like. But that doesn’t mean she deserved to be treated like shit all the time. IT WAS TOO MUCH. Everything felt too heavy. I was struggling to read it. I actually put it down for a few times. But by seeing all the positive reviews on Goodreads, I figured, why not give it another chance?

I barely managed to finish it. Okay, maybe by finishing it, I saw the only good thing in the book. That there’s still good people that are really willing to help. Everything’s messed up. Now I don’t want to throw any spoilers at you so I’ll be keeping my mouth shut. I can definitely say that this book made me feel more disgusted of manipulative men and those who can’t even keep their hands to themselves. Maybe, it was just the theme of the book but I swear everything’s really f*cked up.

It started out pretty slow and with Aeree’s constant rambling and when you thought everything starts to go pretty great, it suddenly transforms into a landslide. Though there are maybe one or two plot twist/s that I did not expect. 90% of the time, nothing actually makes sense. The only highlight of this book for me is the girls’ team up. Sure, the action part was really tiring but reading the book was just like running in circles.

I actually think that “I SHOULD LIKE THIS” because I appear to be the only negative review to be posted on Goodreads. It may be a nice read for everyone else but this book made me feel uncomfortable in a whole new level. I strongly believe that there are things in this book that are completely unnecessary like every attack at both Aeree’s history and sexuality. And don’t forget the completely unnecessary romance.

Survive is an aptly named book. Aeree is the daughter of a Spec Ops father who taught his daughter toughness. The story starts out with a horrific attack on Aeree that sadly defines the next several years of her life. Once the story starts we find ourselves a few years past the attack. Aeree is married and her attorney husband has booked them an idyllic mountain getaway vacation. This where the action starts, and the idyllic setting turns into a bloodbath.

Survive is a story of survival against the odds. It is a story of love, betrayal, and lies with suspense and action interwoven through the story. I did have some issues with Aeree. I had a tough time believing her character. Multiple times during the book she indicated that she didn't follow her instincts and therefore found herself in trouble or harms way. She is a character that has been dealt a rough hand in life, and evaluating her through that lense I do have empathy for her and found myself rooting for her. I thought the story moved along at a nice pace, It is broken down into two "acts", time in the mountains and the time after the mountains. Sally Mason did a great job stringing the reader along. Once I thought I had some things figured out, she removed another layer of the onion and revealed I was wrong. I did guess a few things along the way, but the twisty reveals were very well done.

All in all, I find this book to be a solid 3.5 - 4 star book.

Survive is the second book in the Trapped series but can be read as a standalone.

Aeree has survived a horrific trauma. Unfortunately, that trauma led Aeree to do something drastic, landing her in jail for a bit. Her lawyer, Mitch, manages to get her out and marries her immediately after. Now, despite living a comfortable life, she’s stressed. Stressed about not being able to keep a job, about keeping Mitch happy, about her father, and more. So Mitch decides a short get-away to the mountains is just what she needs. But it doesn’t take long for her little trip to not only worsen her stress, but to put her life in danger.

Just like Mason’s previous book, Trapped, you need to go into this book blind. Knowing too much of the story would definitely ruin the experience. The plot is unique and something I’ve never come across before. It moves steadily and never slows down. Something I always love about Mason’s writing is that her heroines are strong and resilient, and Aeree is an amazing heroine. When she fights back… god, it’s beautiful.

There are references to rape, violence, and bulimia, but it’s never gratuitous and is just enough to make the reader on edge. Still, keep it in mind if those are triggers for you.

Survive is a solid 3.5 star read. I read this over 2 sittings and found just like Trapped (HIDE & SEEK #1) that this book flew by. Before I knew it I was at 78%. Its easy reading, captivating and gripping. I've enjoyed both books in the series and in honesty for many this will be a 4 star, maybe a 5 star read. But I did have a little tiny issue with it and that was the main characters, Aeree.

With Trapped I liked Kels. She had been through a lot and seeing her grow in the book was something I enjoyed, I actually liked her from the get go. With Aeree, I didn't. I found her cold, almost snobbish at times. I get why she is that way as you read the book (No spoilers here) and also understand that she too has been through some shit. That opening chapter.... I'm saying no more. But I didn't find her likeable at all. So as the story progressed at times I didn't really hold much care towards what happened to her. It was probably the last 30% where I found I tolerated and felt she was an 'ok' character, but it wasn't enough to change my views on her. I hope that makes sense. Often with books, like people there are some people we just don't like, some we love. But for me Aeree was one I never warmed too.

Over all this is a good read, I'm not sure I liked it as much as Trapped, namely as some of it I did work out and didn't find there was as much mystery for me. However, it was a good tangled web of intrigue and I do still recommend Survive. This was my second book by Sally and she is definitely an author I will be following in the future, 3.5 stars.

This story is the thing of nightmares and a bump in reality. Almost like the butterfly effect that causes unfortold chaos and drama. As I read this terrorizing tale where one thing after another goes wrong I thought I understood what was happening but,.....I. Was. Wrong.
I enjoyed the connection to Trapped with some of the same characters. The portrayal of both women emerging with such strength and resilience reminds me of the phoenix rising from the ashes to conquer the world.

I read and reviewed a copy of this book.

This book does an excellent job with the backstory of Aeree. The book is action packed with danger and mystery. Aeree is so deeply deceived, she runs into roadblocks at every turn. Then we are again visited by Marcel, Kelsey, and Fin. With their help, the story unfolds brilliantly.

Another great work!!

This book, unlike the first, flows easily and seamlessly between main- and sub-plots. The end effect is one of harmonious synchrony and delightful suspense!

"Ignoring my premonitions has always been my biggest flaw."

Aeree Phan Cahill is married to a successful criminal defense attorney, actually someone that was involved in her case when she was imprisoned for castrating an ex-boyfriend who set her up for a series of horrendous rapes.

Aeree and her husband go on a camping adventure vacation and are caught in the middle, fighting for their lives.

This is the second book of the HIDE & SEEK series after TRAPPED. There are similar elements in the two stories - rape, abuse and self-harming. And the main characters from book one show up in this story as Aeree's neighbors (a nice plus).

I give the same warning as I did for book one. This is an intense book and contains scenes of rape, violence, abuse, and bulimia, which might be triggers for some people.

The book is well-written. I didn't find the characters quite as believable in this story but it was still a good book.

I received this book from Rapid River Publishing through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read the book and leave an unbiased review.
