Οδυσσέας Ελύτης
55 books82 followers(English: Odysseas Elytis) Φιλολογικό ψευδώνυμο του Οδυσσέα Αλεπουδέλλη, ήταν ένας από τους σημαντικότερους Έλληνες ποιητές, μέλος της λογοτεχνικής γενιάς του '30. Διακρίθηκε το 1960 με το Κρατικό Βραβείο Ποίησης και το 1979 με το βραβείο Νόμπελ Λογοτεχνίας, ο δεύτερος και τελευταίος μέχρι σήμερα Έλληνας που τιμήθηκε με βραβείο Νόμπελ.
Γνωστότερα ποιητικά του έργα είναι τα Άξιον Εστί, Ήλιος ο πρώτος, Προσανατολισμοί κ.α. Διαμόρφωσε ένα προσωπικό ποιητικό ιδίωμα και θεωρείται ένας από τους ανανεωτές της ελληνικής ποίησης. Πολλά ποιήματά του μελοποιήθηκαν, ενώ συλλογές του έχουν μεταφραστεί μέχρι σήμερα σε πολλές ξένες γλώσσες. Το έργο του περιλάμβανε ακόμα μεταφράσεις ποιητικών και θεατρικών έργων.
Υπήρξε μέλος της Διεθνούς Ένωσης Κριτικών Έργων Τέχνης και της Ευρωπαϊκής Εταιρείας Κριτικής, Αντιπρόσωπος στις Rencontres Internationales της Γενεύης και Incontro Romano della Cultura της Ρώμης.

Μεγάλες αλήθειες ειπωμένες από τον μεγάλο μας ποιητή με τον δικό του μοναδικό τρόπο. Ένα αποθησαύρισμα αποσπασμάτων του πεζού του λόγου. Σύντομα κείμενα, προσεκτικά επιλεγμένα, που σε καλούν να τα διαβάσεις και να τα ξαναδιαβάσεις για να μη χάσεις τίποτα από το μεστό τους νόημα.

Για μένα, υπάρχει η Ελλάδα η δική μου. Δεν είναι η Ελλάδα η τρέχουσα. Και το έργο μου έρχεται σαν βράχος στο κύμα που τη χτυπά. Αντιστέκεται. Και η αντίσταση είναι ουσιαστική. Βγαίνει έμμεσα με κάτι που διαρκεί -αυτό είναι και το ουσιώδες του δημιουργού. Διότι η Ελλάδα μπορεί να είναι και εκατό χρόνια σε πτώση και εγώ γράφω ένα ποίημα που έχει αντίκρισμα στην Ελλάδα την παντοτινή.

as my stay in greece comes to an end, ive been seeking more books by greek/hellenic authors and ive stumbled upon this one at the stavros niarchos foundation last weekend.
i enjoyed the structure of this book - it must have been a really interesting reading and editing exercice (as this is an anthology of elytis' prose works by ioulita iliopoulou).
a few excerpts that struck me (positively or negatively):
(+) ‘i never viewed greece as a nationalist, but, on the one hand, as the source of the language i used and, on the other, as a stock of unique experiences in complete alignment with my dreams.’
(-) not that i mind the womanification of nature, but im so tired of its sexualisation:
‘the sea combatted and alleviated poverty in an expected way. however for greece the sea is another story. It has no connection with the vast following valley that opens up before other coastal lands. it’s a familiar and friendly element, an azure tongue that penetrates and dissects the land in a thousand different ways; a second land that, in its own way, can be sown and reaped by man. (until here im fine). it gradually came to be endowed with the characteristics of a goddess who follows you everywhere. if you’re atop a mountain, you know that before very long at some bend, you’ll see it pure and immaculate. however stormy it is, you sense that it doesn’t want to do you harm. (...)’
i think what bothers me the most is the constant sexualisation of women and the superposition of gender on (according to me) genderless concepts/things in a sexual way. had this been a gender-neutral sexualisation i dont think i would have reacted the same way. but im sick and tired of seeing the same lexical field being used and reused by male authors, feeding the nauseating narrative that respected women are pure, immaculate, and never mean or do harm even when theyre (justifiably - or not) mad! these authors should follow george orwell’s first writing advice that is to ‘never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print’. give us something new, something different.
(+) ‘a landscape is not, as some perceive it, simply a mass of earth, plants and water; it the projection of a people’s soul on matter’ (well let’s not make that projection rape-y and stereotypical)
(+) ‘none of all those things that, for centuries now, they have been promoting in schools, churches and political rallies, secures a passport for the soul, unless previously it has obtained the necessary visa from the means of expression. the laws of art are the laws of life. the politician shouldn’t differ from the artist as a notion.’
reading this was helpful though (and i liked that elytis insisted on the importance of a good education system and its reform needed in greece). not only did it help me pinpoint a recurring literary tendency that awakens big feelings in me, but also introduced me to other hellenic artists that i want to check out next, and to new words and concepts (i now know what meltemi is - a seasonal aegean wind).

That book was a gift from a friend. Even though I like the arts and everything that surrounds the field, I am not sure I would ever buy this book. It seemed pointless because I would really to read something about the poet and his life. However, I am glad that this book turned out to be on one of my shelves because I kind of enjoyed it. I had the pleasure of reading this legend's work and appreciate every poet, every word, every text about Greece and how he felt about the country, the people, the language and everything in between.
