As summer winds down in Chicago's Levee District, the crime rate continues to soar. With the murder of an entire prominent family, in what appears to be a robbery, Patrick Moses must look for a killer who had left very few clues. With the prosecution of the Old Lady Murders still looming, Moses finds his time is limited and his nerves are frayed.
On top of that, someone has started brutally murdering Chicago's street cops.
Last evening I finisphed the 4th of the Levee series. Bad thing...there are only 4 . Good thing, the stage is set for a 5th, and hopefully many more. I gave a 5 for the great writing, great characters, and the often lush "mood" of the background scenery. When starting #1, I did not expect to finish it...but hey, for 99 cents...I am a huge fan of British Police Procedurals, and generally avoid "historical" crime novels, but this series is great, I want more. The Levee series had me from page 1. Plenty of "quality kills," likeable, if not exasperatingly flawed, anti-hero. 5 for the series...4 for sketchy editing, especially in Book 4. I'm ready for the next one.
I'm a big fan of all 5 of John Sturgeon's novels, including the 4 Levee District Books. I am especially drawn to the way he uses dialogue between the characters as the main device to drive the plot. I am looking forward to the next book. It will be nice to have Patrick Moses back from his vacation.
You may think I'm biased as the son of the author and sharing the same name, but this book delivers all the gripping and suspenseful goods you have come to expect from the Levee series never once letting up! I look forward to Book 5 and recommend you check this out!
I have always been interested in the history of Chicago. These books were so realistically written I felt like I was there. They had me on the edge of my seat as I finished them. I look forward to more from this author.
