'WAYWARD GALAXY 2' is the explosive sequel to the blockbuster first book that had sci-fi listeners calling for more. This next installment featured the gritty combat of Galaxy's Edge combined with the world-building intrigue of the Renegade Star series.
So interesting progression, but it feels like a laundry list of things to write about vs meaningful character/plot development. The action is largely confusing and the sheer number of players makes it hard to care/follow and particular one. I never felt like I wasn't going to finish it, but I'm hesitant to think I would read book 3.
Anspach and Chaney have a good thing going here. The characters are likable, especially Reach. The references to 1980's action movies is pretty entertaining. And the action is intense. Interesting this time that they defaulted to communism vs. capitalism and commented on turning an alien planet into another America. The whole lot of them disagreed and hoped for something new.
As for that ending - two words: KNEW IT!
I hope it won't be long before the next installment comes out. These two authors are funny guys and that shows in their writing. And then there's RC Bray. Nuff said.
24-33. Whoa. Good book with extreme detail of the battles between factions on Amir. I am not a fan of war but was hooked on finding out who was doing what and the location. A lot of fighting, bullets, and gory death. Think I need a break in the series since it was so intense. I purchased this e-book from Amazon Prime.
I doooooon't know man, just not feeling this one. It's basically a long drawn out action scene with a bunch of forgettable characters and logical fallacies. I understand the whole 'we have no clue what the hell is happening' vibe, but it just feels too forced. Not sure if I can stomach book 3 if it's gonna be more of the same.
First book was much better. There was a story. This one seemed like one long protracted battle. No real story. No breaks in the fight. After awhile found myself just skipping pages waiting for fight to be over.
I don't know why they just didn't name these books "The Wayward Galaxy Series", but they didn't so I'm having a little trouble with understanding the titles. It also looks like there will be a Wayward 3, so this is definitely a series of very good books. Should have been the Wayward Galaxy Series. But, that has nothing to do with my review so why am I writing about it? I don't know.
Well, about this book. It's got the same kind of action that the last book had with a good amount of humor thrown in. There's this android/robot named "Brody" who's got a few loose screws somewhere in this mechanical body. Still, he's been around for a long, long time on Amir protecting the original humans who landed here many centuries ago. That landing shouldn't have taken place more than 40 years since the starship Boone should have landed. The first group along with the Boone colonist should have given humans a good start on a new home for humanity. Things were not going well back on Earth and war could be breaking out anytime soon. The only problem with this new world was that the Boone took a lot more time than the originally planed 40 years to arrive. Yes! They arrived some 400 years late! They found the original settlers a few generations older, barely surviving in the remnants of their crashed starship and fighting to stay alive much longer. If it hadn't been for Brody, they would have all died a long time ago.
Now that the crew of the Boone has arrived, they have resources to re-establish a normal colony or at least something resembling a normal colony. With this group was a young Marine, now civilian that found himself the focus of a lot of attention which he later found out was due to some very sneaky programming by the resident Doctor Ramon and his android named Alexa. While a lot of the colonist aboard the Boone didn't survive the trip, those that did needed some strong leadership to get the colony established so Alexa had done some psychological manipulating of the minds of the surviving colonist so as to make one Jared Reach surviving leader who everyone looked to for advice and consent. He had also been medically treated while in stasis so that he was almost super human in strength. His abilities were almost a match for the android Brody! All that was covered in the last book.
The Osay are the original colonist who now have to select a new leader. It kind of appears that Jared Reach might get the nomination as their new leader, but he doesn't want the job. He also has another job to tackle and that needs his immediate attention. While they had thought the RUPAC soldiers had all been found and killed, something else was now lurking in the forest and it was scaring the heck out of all the Osay, especially Liana. She was absolutely terrified of this thing, whatever it was, and was having some serious mental issues with the idea that it could still be around. And it certainly was after the experience of the last hunting party. One Osay didn't come back so Reach and Brody went out to find him. They did found a body, minus it's skin and head! Whatever is doing this kind of stuff needs to be dealt with and swiftly.
So, that's what this book is mostly about. The "Bangora" is a deadly killer and that's about all they know about it. It has terrorized the Osay for years, but had gone away for quite some time. Now, the Osay may have strayed too far from their original territory and into the domain of this creature. It's not know if even Brody can handle this thing since Brody hasn't ever been quick enough to catch it in the act of killing one of the Osay. It always just remains out of his reach, yet he knows that he has shot it more than once to no effect. It's hoped that Jared Reach and Brody can manage to trap the thing and between them, kill it. If they don't, then more colonist and probably all of them will soon die.
I like the story because something always seems to happen to move it along. It will be interesting to see how things turn out in book 3, "Wayward 3", but that won't be available until October 2021.
Aack! My review didn’t stick! Well, the jist was that this book is pretty good! It’s full of action and the strengthening of bonds between the different American groups, and the teams of Osay and Ranger fighting units. I listened in Audible format, so I had the additional pleasure of hearing all the Ranger slang, military terms, and accents as they were meant to sound.
I wondered throughout why the ship was allowed to stay in RUPAC character and the doctor hadn’t tried to update more personnel with the augmentation that was given to Reach and Liana, including invigorating himself in the medical pods. Also, Brodie’s stuttering could easily have been fixed in this book. I don’t find his vocal stylings very interesting and it seems a distraction to the soldiers during maneuvers. Doc’s too busy I guess, so the “RUPAC doctor” will probably become helpful in Book 3. Most of my questions were answered after the dramatic rescue attempt and discovery of the new farm and research labs in the exciting final chapters! I guess we’ll also be seeing more of the brilliant female researcher. She’ll probably show back up in the next book.

The US colonists discover the 'native' wildlife is not as nice as they originally thought....
A remnant of the folklore of the Osay is the presence of the Bangora, an apparently invincible and nearly invisible entity that targets and kills their kind with relentless efficiency. The monkey-like Filmenna are often seen scampering in the trees and appear to be mostly harmless....until suddenly they swarm and then they are not (mostly harmless)! These two organisms suddenly make appearances and start to attack the US and Osay people. Are they being guided by others? In addition there is a mission to obtain an entangled particle so that an instantaneous transmission to Earth can be made...and what are RUPAC up to? This and many more questions are posed and to some extent answered in this tale as the US forces bed down, attempt to fend off any type of attack and achieve their objectives. A new leader of the Osay is also annointed. There is much action, with some gruesome depictions, some twists and turns, many deaths and some revelations, all of which leave you eager to continue the tale in the next installment...
4.5 stars. This universe of GE and the rest is large and there are a number of "streams" This particular one isn't as outright weird as Forgotten Ruin and doesn't quite meet the standard of the best of the GE books, but it does what it does well.
You may get the impression from these guys that the US Army Rangers are the best troops to ever exist. I have my doubts about that (see: Blackhawk Down as an example), but they are definitely a top-rate infantry force. Until someone writes a book with a Battalion of the Para Regiment or Royal Marine Commandos in one of these situations (hint) we'll have to make due with the Rangers.
If you like (military) action, there's lots in this. If you liked the first of these books this one is at least as good I'd say.
ranger action and all the 80s references you can handle
Gotta say that I really enjoy Brody. He could be a really annoying character if it weren’t for the stutter and the almost childlike joy he has in all his old school action movie lines. They add a nice touch of levity to an otherwise more serious book, though the Rangers do have their own humorous moments.
With this one we get to expand on Amir a bit, and it seems like it’s more populated than we were led to believe in book 1. Things heat up, and the Rangers have to do what they do. To quote another of Jason’s works, “Rangers gonna Ranger” there were some interesting twists in this one, and some plot hooks that I can’t wait to see come up again in 3! Great job guys!
You have piqued my interest more in this installment....
Compelled by the resettlement of Terrans, I had to read book 2. The story is fascinating; the military action & interactions remind me of family veterans talking (when they thought I couldn't hear) about their own experiences in WW1, & WW2. I really want this series to continue. It's amazing how a basic idea (Earth moves to new planet) can be turned into a story that I read right through & then I want more. Please write more of this series! (As you're writing, I'll check out both your other works since I enjoy your story so much)
I have enjoyed Jason Anspach's writing for some time, and this is the first time I have read something with his Co writer J.N. Chaney. And it does not disappoint.
This is a nice extension of the first volume, You get anew Bigbad, the Bangora, More insight into the RusPac alliance, And a nifty new suit of armor for the protagonist. " Wait, this review is really vague" you're saying to yourself, and you are right, I am not doing any spoilers. If you like military Sci fi you will like this book.
Hmm, I guess it's the second thing I have read by this duo. It won't be the last
I’ve been a follower of Jason, and his partner Nick Cole since Galaxy’s Edge book one. Since then, I’ve disagreed, though not hatefully, with the direction of that series. WG in my opinion is closer to the original direction of GE, and I find myself thoroughly enjoying this series as I listen to it when I gym all the way to when I’m working.
Overall, this is one of Jason’s best books in awhile now, and this series to me is far more interesting than GE is at the moment, so I’m looking forward to more.
Worst second book of any series I have ever read. After a promising beginning this book is unfortunately just bad. It is not well written, the story is almost non-existent and most of the "battles" mentioned by other reviewers are against animals (at least the first 60% of the book). The . Jumping off this seres. Plus I listened to the audiobook and not a big fan of RC Bray as his voices for most characters are the exact same.
Reach & the Rangers continue the major tasks of both protecting the survivors and to incorporate the Osay into their fold as not just warriors or hunters but as trained troops in one of the most complex skill sets there is. They acquit themselves well, proving highly motivated to learn. The colonists are thrown more problems than just the RUPAC forces that they have to devise ways to counter. Still good reading!
Wayward Galaxy books are an ongoing story. This is the second time l’ r read this one. Thrilling, fast pasted plot taking place in a futuristic galaxy. I discovered some characters who are central characters in future books are introduced here. Prisms is a baby,Prisma, held in her moms arms when her dad, Tom, returns from a horrible mission. I have much more insight into this story as a whole now. I was stunned when I came across baby Prisma.
I enjoyed this follow-up to the initial book the continued build out fire characters and world; however, the third act went on forever, and I ended up skipping pages to move forward. I think this book suffers from too much of a good thing syndrome; of descriptions of Rangers fighting Russians in space is good, then a third of the book endlessly describing the same thing must be better? Right?
Okay so Wayward Galaxy 2 is in the history books and it was just as good as the first. Great action and great characters and some humor mixed in just to allow people to catch there breath. I could see a lot more good reads from this series so Mr. Chaney as I tell most of the good authors, you keep writing and I'll keep reading.
I love well written science fiction. For me that means: well developed characters, believable scenarios, suspense that get rewarded, you don’t need a degree in science to understand it and BONUS, makes me laugh out!!! Looking forward to #3 in the mean time going to look for other books by this author.
This is a good series but what gives it that extra star is Brody and Reach as without these aspects I would just have an enjoyable read. The constant 80s references and abilities of Reach keep this fresh and engaging for the brain. Having such authors helps with the confidence this will go from strength to strength.
I figured it out... took me a while... and it put the whole series into focus This is NOT A SCIFI SERIES... THIS IS NOT A SPACE OPERA... THIS IS AN EPIC MILITARY DRAMA... it just happens to be in space. That made all the difference. Now I get it, now i can review it as it deserves, and as a military book it works great.
Enjoy the mix of animal vs man and man vs man. JN books have always been a win for me but the constant 80 movies references from Brody and the intense action scenes make this one stand towards the top of the pack.
I give it a 3.7. The book has a lot of action and I do like the main characters and the alien setting. But there's almost no development of secondary characters and the action got a little exhausting at the end. Overall, it's a fun series and I have to read the 3rd one.
