Jenő Rejtő

Howard, Gibson Lavery) was a Hungarian author, fiction writer, playwright and journalist, who died as a forced labourer during the World War II. He was born in Budapest, Austria-Hungary, on March 29, 1905, and died in Yevdokovo, Soviet Union (then under Axis occupation) on January 1, 1943.
He studied drama before traveling across Europe. When he returned to Hungary he became a successful playwright, responsible for such operettas as "Who Dares Wins" (1934). He then went on to write adventure novels parodying the Foreign Legion, which often featured his somewhat bizarre sense of humor.
He reportedly died in 1942 in a labor camp after he was taken from hospital whilst seriously ill. The stamp issued in his honor depicts various images such as a North African sunset (a reference to his Foreign Legion stories), a cafe he frequented and a copy of Nagykorut - the newspaper he edited hanging on the stand.

I highly appreciate this good-humoured and captivating book! One shouldn't expect some obscure and thought-provoking ideas but really enjoyable experience. The plot is quite catchy and involving!
To tell the truth, at first, I didn't expect to find round and complex characters in the book. However I was wrong, as the majority of the characters developed though the course of the narration.
I'm happy to admit that "Dirty Fred, the Captain" brings nothing but positive emotions to the readers.

Rég röhögtem ennyit – mostanában másféle könyveket fogtam ki :) Kellett már!
Életem első Rejtő könyve, illetve a kedvencem is tőle.
Sokszor eszembe jut, miközben Rejtő Jenőt olvasok, hogy vajon ilyen zseniális vagy ilyen őrült -e az író?! Ennyi marhaságot hogyan lehet összehordani? Jókedvet okozó, nevetést generáló könyv, amit bármely korosztály élvezhet!
Fülig Jimmy az egyik kedvenc könyv karakterem – és hiába Piszkos Fred, a kapitány a könyv címe: egyértelműen Jimmy viszi előre a könyvet :D

Imadtam! Hangosan nevettem itthon az egyes jeleneteken! :D
Meg! Meg! Meg! -> Ma kezdem majd a kovetkezo reszet. :D
A vege.. Az utolso par mondatnal meg a hideg is kirazott... Amugyis birtam az oreget a maga stilusaval mar az elso resztol fogva, de az a par sor.. Csak meg inkabb a szivembe lopta magat.

Hűűűha!! Az általam olvasott Rejtő könyvek közül ez a legjobb!
Nem tudom, hogy ezt a mondatot Rejtő vonatkozásában hányszor lesz lehetőségem még leírni. Szerintem ezt már überelni lehetetlen. Fergetegesen jóhumorú könyv. Képes olvasóját kiragadni a mindennapok szürkeségéből és hangos, többször visszatérő, könnyeket fakasztó vihogást kiváltani belőle.

Nagyon zavart, hogy Fülig Jimmy naplója, Jimmy stílusában és helyesírásával készült. Szenvedés volt olvasni. Nagyon szeretném szeretni Rejtő Jenőt de ez a könyv nem segített.

Disclaimer: I've read it in Hungarian, but it's available in English, published by the translator. It's part of a trilogy, but can be read as a stand alone.
After a bar fight, Smiley Jimmy finds himself to be employed as a stoker and waiter on the Honolulu Star. A luxury ship sailing around the world. He only has to stay for one leg of the journey, and things are going well, until strange things start happening and one of the passangers is found dead. Jimmy finds himself in the thick of the mess and agrees to switch places with a gentleman called Mr Irving. But in this story is nothing as it seems, and Jimy has to use his wit and uncanny abilities to always find trouble to save his own neck as well as others’.
Man, it’s hard to talk about Dirty Fred, the Captain without revealing too much about the plot. For a really short book (just shy of 300 pages) it sure has a lot packed into it. The plot itself is not too complicated, though has a fair number of twists. The real strength of this book is its characters and Rejtő‘s way of parodising situations and clichés in a way that it becomes hilarious rather than cringy. He knows the right line between funny and overdone and walks it like an experienced tight rope walker.
His writing style is pretty minimalist, there are no lengthy descriptions or flowing prose. And still, his characters nearly walk off the page because even if he is using broad strokes and plain language, his characterisation is pitch perfect. Especially Smiley Jimmy’s who is the main protagonist in this book. I’m not sure how the English translation turned out, but the chapters written “by his hand” shows the real genius of Rejtő. The way he misuses words and gives different names to people, the easy way he plays with the Hungarian language. There were more than one occasions where I kept giggling for minutes after a word or two.
And of course we have Dirty Fred, who is more of a side character here, or let’s say he mostly stays in the background but it’s true for him too, that there is more than meets the eye. Though you better stay out of his way. Just to be safe. And make sure to check all your valuables. But I really, really can’t say more without spoiling things. What I can say is though, is that I loved the way the criminal society resembles and turns the real world society inside out. Brilliant.
All being said, if you are looking for a few hours of lighthearted fun without needing to think too much, I definitely recommend checking Dirty Fred, the Captain out! A Hungarian classic which I hope will steal your heart as well. Hopefully not literally. You can just never know with these guys.

This was much better than the first one. The comedy was great and the characters were surprisingly well-written. I did not thought that we would get decent character development in these books. The plot twists in this one were much more unexpected than in the first book too. Overall it was a really enjoyable read. The only thing I missed a little was Rozsdás but of course his story has ended in. Although Fülig Jimmy was another kind of main protagonist he was just as likable. I can only recommend this novel to anyone who wants some easy, fast-paced but cleverly written book which is highly entertaining.

A Piszkos Fredet még valamikor 2002-2003 környékén kezdtem olvasni képregény formában (ráadásul csak az első füzetéhez jutottam hozzá), és bár időről-időre eszembe jutott, hogy érdemes lenne elolvasni a regényt teljes egészében (vagy legalább végre bármit Rejtőtől), egészen mostanáig nem kerítettem rá sort. Ami hiba volt, a stílus, a humor, a történetvezetés ugyanis a mai napig megállja a helyét, és egy adag nyomasztó, túlnyomóan horror kötet után valóságos felüdülés volt.

even though i can recognize the good idea behind the plot, The writing and messy details really discouraged me from reading. i finished the book only because I was stuck on a plane.

Értem, hogy sokan miért ekkora rajongói a Rejtő műveknek, a humora és a kalandok közbeni folyamatosan kísérő és terelő hullámok miatt szinte már letehetetlen, mégis számomra túl sok volt benne a szóvicc és a feleslegesen beszúrt humor. Egyszerűen ízlés kérdése, lehet a következő műve jobban tetszik majd. Mindenesetre igazi szórakoztató irodalom:)

Jedna od najzabavnijih avantura na koje sam do sada naleteo. More, brod, zavrzlame na brodu, zaplet u podzemlju Singapura. Vrcavi dijalozi i lukav rasplet. Potražiću u biblioteci još neku knjigu iz serijala o Kapetanu Prljavom Fredu.

Rejtő Jenő könyveiről tudni kell, hogy a humor elképesztő. Amikor azt hiszi az olvasó, hogy érti, kiderül, mégsem.

I've heard a lot about P. Howard aka Rejtő Jenő, the great Hungarian humorist, with his colorful characters, weird and unusual situations, and a constant attack on your laughing muscles. So apparently I came to read this book with very high expectations, and ended up a bit disappointed. The characters were truly eclectic, but a bit one-sided. The situations were surreal enough, but the humor, for some reason seemed to fail me. However, the world of fist fighters, stowaways, secret clubs of the Singapore underworld, mixed with murder on a luxury ocean liner and a plot of overthrowing a small island monarch makes an interesting mix (never mind the coherence of the story though) deserving the three stars.

Zseniális az elejétől a végéig! Tökéletesen személyesítí meg Fülig Jimmyt és végig karakterben marad. És az a rengeteg helyesírási és nyelvtani hiba! Néha már éreztem, ahogy Jimmy lehúz magával a teljes elbutulás felé. Máskor viszont annyira furfangos a történet, hogy nem győzi az ember követni! Szinte hallottam, ahogy az kerekek forogtak a fejemben. Főleg mert mindenkinek több neve van és mindenki mindenkit másnak hisz, mint aki. :) All-in-all: a legszórakoztatóbb és leghumorosabb könyv, amit az utóbbi években olvastam!

Rejtő Jenő (known also as P. Howard) is the master of the hungarian pulp fictions, and this book is known as one of his finest pieces.
The plot is gripping, but sometimes a bit predictable, and the characters are one dimensional, but there are enough, so it's not boring at all.
I strongly recommens it to anyone who likes adventure novels, who liked the Prince and the Pauper or the Treasure Island. I dare to risk that if it was in english it would be world-famous.
