Excellent sci fi adventure

The world building is excellent but dark. The aliens are fascinating. Cam is just a great guy. I'm not going to lie; I didn't like Ace much after one of her flashbacks. But she was a kid without a lot of choices or friends, and she made a mistake, even if it was a mistake that killed someone. The story is a page-turner and well-written. I'm looking forward to the next Truehearts adventure.

This was a pretty decent story to what looks to be setting up a further series. Normally I don't care for books as opening chapters, but Macklem and Alexander do a good job of making this a self-contained tale. It was very well paced, with excellent action staging and sentence-by-sentence prose. Badass Female Character is becoming almost the same trope that it replaced in sci fi, but the writers work hard to make Ace flawed and conflicted, and it usually lands. Apparently there's no swearing in this universe. Everyone just calls each other Hussy. A lot. Cam was a refreshing character, a dad just trying to provide for his family. I thought the lack of a romantic subplot made the story stronger, actually. The pirate antagonists were a bit of a throwaway, just mustache twirlers really, but worked generally well as foils to the action overall. There were the occasional typos that go along with any self published book, but this was much more competently edited than most KU books I've read. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a well paced survival story on a distant world. It has potential to be really good depending on where they take it next.

Good start

The story is fun to read. A couple typos, but nothing crazy. I like the characters and look forward to their next adventure.
