Rihito Hiyakawa is a freelance exorcist who also helps police with the unsolved cases with his experience and his research on spirits. He hires Kosuke Mikado who has the ability to see ghosts and makes him his assistant. Mikado dislikes his abilities but with Hiyakawa's help they start the Cleaners who aid people with spiritual issues.
I find the whole spirit cleaning job, possession of spirits and unsolved paranormal cases really unique and the whole concept is so refreshing to read. The slow burn between the mcs, the unfolding of their powers ( Mikado's especially) and their backstories interesting. I haven't read anything like this before. I would definitely recommend this if you're looking for something close — ghost busters, reluctant partners and unsolved mysteries.
Kosuke Mikado, a bookstore clerk with the unwelcomed ability to see ghosts, is approached by Rihito Hiyakawa, a freelance exorcist, with an offer to be his assistant. Mikado is scared of ghosts and is reluctant to get involved in this type of work, but the pay would be double what he's currently getting getting from the book store and his hours would be far fewer. He agrees to give it a try and so begins our story.
The way Mikado assists Hiyakawa is by "entering" him and merging their cores in order to better see and expel the spirits. The experience feels very erotic and both men describe it as feeling incredibly good. In fact, it feels so good that Mikado passes out the first time they do it. What makes the whole experience feel so bizarre for Mikado is how those (for lack of a better word) sexual feelings are combined with his extreme fear of whatever ghosts they are trying to expel and the entire situation itself. Whenever Hiyakawa enters him it's like he loses control of his body, and it's extremely unsettling.
The premise of this manga is really good, but I think it is important to emphasize that this is, first and foremost, a paranormal mystery series. The relationship between Mikado and Hiyakawa is not the main focus, and in general, besides the merging of their cores, the bl elements aren't very strong. I've seen the anime (though I never finished it), and if it followed the manga faithfully, that doesn't change for a while, if at all. If you've finished the series, let me know!
I read this thinking it would get me interested in the story again, but it really didn't. I never finished the anime because I got bored, and this doesn't seem like it will be any different. The main case isn't bad, and one could consider this a slow burn, but something about their dynamic just doesn't work for me, so I won't be continuing the series. 3 stars
Premise: The MC is an ordinary book store shopkeeper who has an inconvenient ability to see ghosts. The MC hates this strange ability but then one day he meets another guy who also has supernatural power. The guy runs a small business of 'problem solving' and he strongly invites the MC to join him, claiming: 'It's destiny that we met'...
Hand down, it's one of the best yaoi manga I've read in recent years. The ideas are refreshing, the story is plot-driven instead of being overly romance-focused, the character's setting is rather unusual as well: a withdrawn, on-guard uke who has been fearful of the ghosts and being singled out as a freak by his peers for all his life and a seme who is unafraid of being different and who is hard to tell whether he can be classified as a 'good guy' or not, a cop who looks for help from psychics but he doesn't believe in the supernatural himself (and the seme said the cop's disbelief is actually his strength and protection), I really like these!!
As with the slow-burn romance (if you can call it that), I also really like how some parts of the truth are only slowly revealed to us through the process of the story, good job!
Oh, but I love BL like that. There's nothing wrong with straightforward romance of course, but manga like these are what makes me truly happy. Really intriguing plot and characters. I'm already looking forward to the next volume.
A BL manga with horror elements sounded like a dream come true to me, and this did not disappoint. It's a unique story about an exorcist and a bookstore employee who can see ghosts, and the humor and creepy elements are well balanced. I wish the BL element was a bit stronger; right now there's just some (pretty obvious) innuendo. I'm hopeful the connection deepens in time though.
Having watched the anime, I have a better idea of what to expect. This volume does a good job setting up the story and creating an unnerving atmosphere. The amount of innuendos here is actually insane. It makes sense that this originally serialized in a BL magazine as I can't imagine Tomoko Yamashita getting away with it otherwise.
8/10/2022: ★★☆☆☆ It has a cool premise and the romance has potential! But I'm not super gripped by the story and will probably put it on hold for now.
I started reading TNBTTW because Gege Akutami has expressed admiration for Tomoko Yamashita's works in more than one ocassion and I'm so glad i started it because I'm loving this story. I'm really hooked! I'm pretty sure I'll be watching the live action and anime once i finish this story. Thank you Gege for introducing me to another amazing mangaka ♡
Very intriguing characters and storyline. I like that their (the two leads) sexual interactions are more subjective than physical— it makes the story more surreal and emotionally complex, and the double meanings of how they describe the feeling is rich.
After watching the movie with the same name starring the amazing Shison Jun, I decided to check out the manga it was based on - and it didn't disappoint. Funny, intriguing, a little bit creepy. Loved it!
Review for vol 1 - 9: This manga surprised me a lot. Obviously, I went in for the BL aspect, but it ended up being a really well-written mystery/occult manga! The plot is terrific, and while the pace is on the slower side, the suspense and unsolved mysteries will keep you interested. This is a really cool take on the whole supernatural thing, and it has a few twists that will surprise you. The art is very simplistic, but it gives off a very creepy vibe when it needs to. The strong point IMO is the cast. The two mains are both such fascinating characters with unique backstories (you'll be surprised) and have great chemistry. Even the side characters are well written and explored as they should be. I love the dynamics between Mikado and Hiyakawa, Erika and Sakaki, Mukae and Mikado, and Hanazawa and Hiyakawa. I honestly just love them all! Let me tell you that the pace picks up the further you read, and vol 7 and 8 were SO GOOD. I'm honestly just sad that vol 10 doesn't have a release date, and I recommend this manga to everyone and don't let the BL tag keep you from reading this cause that's not the focus at all. In fact, it kind of gets overshadowed by everything else that happens later. I hope we get a physical release for this manga someday.
Wanna read this BL manga mostly because of its intriguing plot and partly because Akutami Gege (Jujutsu Kaisen mangaka) recommended it lol. Interestingly, Tomoko Yamashita sensei is one of his earlier inspirations before he even started doing jjk (and apparently there are elements in this manga that influenced Gege while creating jjk, particularly when it comes to the concept of curses and curse manipulation). So yeah I'm definitely giving this one a read 😆 Might even watch the anime adaptation too if it's gripping enough.
