This is the first story I remember my mom reading to me as a little girl. The descriptions of life on the mountain made me want to go to Switzerland one day, which has happened! Heidi is a character whose pure kindness and joy has a ripple effect. She learns quickly and soaks in the simple things in life. A lovely read!

The doctor after spending September on Heidi’s mountain:
“It is good to be on the mountain; body and soul got well there, and life becomes happy again.” -pg 219

From a young age, I heard my mother talking about Heidi, and how it had such an impact on her childhood at a time where entertainment was scarce, and books greatly appreciated. Now, more than 30 years have passed, I have decided to grab the very same book she had read, and delight myself with the candid story of Heidi and her love for nature and simplicity.
Heidi's heart-warming view of the world should be read by all children at school, teaching them the value of nature and all the beings that inhabit it, however small or powerless they are, and to participate in acts of selflessness, just like Heidi, whose big heart ached whenever her interspecies friends were in sorrow or danger.

I remember loving Heidi when I was a child. Such adventure in the mountains really appealed to me. So, Heidi is an orphaned girl being raised by her maternal aunt Dete in Switzerland. When Dete moves to the city she takes 5-year-old Heidi to her paternal grandfather's house, up the mountain from the Dörfli who has the nickname 'The Alm-Uncle'. He briefly resents Heidi's arrival, but she soon earns his affection. Heidi befriends neighbors including young Peter the goatherd. Ultimately Heidi is about innocence, faith, and kindness.
