A rookie cop. A team of supernatural detectives. A power hungry witch on a killing spree.

My name is Cat McKenzie, and I’m in over my damn head.

I’d finally come to grips with the fact that not all Supernaturals are a**holes when the witch downstairs is murdered and I’m rescued from certain death by the fae assassin responsible for revealing the existence of Supernaturals to humans six months ago.

That’s not the best bit though.

Said fae wants me and my partner to look into the death of his niece, and he made us an offer we can’t refuse...just like in a bad mob movie.

To top it all off, I’m on the hunt to figure out who my parents really were, because they sure as sh*t weren’t the archaeologists I was led to believe.

Clandestine groups, magical artifacts and a growing headache, all I want to do is get into my fuzzy unicorn pajamas and crawl into bed. Like hell that’s going to happen anytime soon.

Bad Witch is the second installment in author Lauren Dawes Cat McKenzie series. Just when you thought Officer Cat McKenzie had seen it all during her first week on the job, she's about to be proven wrong. First she receives a visit from one Alistair de Champ who works for Roxanne Monroe, the Buxton vampire kiss mistress. Since Cat and her partner helped with a vampire problem, Roxanne now owes Cat a favor. Cat then stumbles across her neighbor, a witch, being murdered by another witch using black magic.

*Spoiler* Well I’ll be. That was a good sequel. What I like best about this author is that her story flows and you aren’t left in confusion as to how that concept occurred. Now the only question I have is Cat what are you? It doesn’t make sense if you look at her background how she is able to survive in situations where she should not have walked away. By all information presented she is human and comes from a strong hunter line but this women is able to bond with an angelic knife, developed a sexual relationship with sawyer and he still can have sex with her after- is she going to end up pregnant and produce a super baby? If so I wouldn’t care cause she will have a happily ever after. I can wait for book three especially after reading the preview chapter.

“Bad Witch” by Lauren Dawes’, the second instalment in the “Cat McKenzie” series, is another entertaining solid urban fantasy story, which brings our rookie very human female Cat and her not-human-at-all new paranormal police partner back, with a new interesting plot, lots of action and a healthy portion of chemistry.

After Cat McKenzie froze on her very first day on the job by witnessing her partner being killed, and manage to get thrown out to the pigs in the very first week of her hopeless police career, aka the Paranormal Investigative Group, as officially the human liaison, but let us be real here, the only reason consist in the unwillingness of anybody in the police to work with the “raw rookie, who got her partner killed” (even if it wasn’t technically her fault) . At the beginning the Pigs (the pun is simply to good to pass on 😊) weren’t impressed either, but gradually Cat has found her place in the team, even gaining the attention of Sawyer, her new and hotter than hot partner. But if Cat thought vampires were bad (‘Bad Vampire’, Book 1), wait ‘till she meets the witches.

This is a fast-paced, funny to the point of snarky, solid story, set in a very well-crafted UF world, with interesting secondary characters, and an endeared main character duo that go out like a house on fire. Cat is too sassy for her own good, hiding her insecurities under a blanket of sarcasm that only add more sparks to the duo. Thus, whatever you tend to relate to Cat or to Sawyer, just recline back, let them do ‘their thing’ and enjoy the ride…. there is no escape from those two, but hopefully there is escape from the witches, because we really would ‘see’ more of Cat… and Sawyer 😉

"My primitive brain was screaming at me to run. Run like fucking Forrest."

Bad Witch was even better than the first! My mind was glued to Cat and Sawyer and the crazy supe shenanigans thrown their way. New developments in Cat and Sawyers relationship, as well as more paranormal danger, make for an action-packed story.

I loved the new creatures I met in this one. I'm so impressed by all the magical possibilities and the easy-to-read writing style. The fascinating workings of magic, combined with snark and the intense chemistry between Cat and Sawyer create a story that I found fun, romantic, and full of potential for more. The bittersweet ending leaves me eager for the next book. I'm really enjoying this series so far!

This is fast becoming one of my favourite series. Cat is a chaos magnet but she has such a fun snarky view on life that you can't help fall in love with her and Sawyer is everything you expect from a leading man ( well not really but that's something you need to find out for yourself). Highly recommend this series but must be read in order.

I loved this book! Cat is growing and maturing into herself and hey who doesn't want a sexy AF sex demon as a work partner!

Set 2 weeks after the end of Bad Vampire Lauren Dawes again throws us into the life of human PIG liaison Cat McKenzie.

Cats building is destroyed and she moves in with her work partner Sawyer.
Witches, Fae and all manner of supernatural creatures make their appearance within the pages.

Cats new truck, replacement to the one that was hit by a Semi with her in it, is destroyed by another Supernatural occurrence.

Cat and Sawyers sexual tension amps up throughout the book but if they act on this what will happen to their partnership going forward?

I received a copy of this in exchange for my honest review.

Lauren Dawes has turned sarcasm into an art form. Cat is back, she is still a danger magnet. There is a witch killing witches and with each kill she becomes more powerful. Cat and Sawyer are on the case. I love this story and look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Oh My Goodness! 🔥🔥🔥
I don’t even know how to deal with reality or this emotional roller-coaster. I LOVED Bad Vampire, but Bad Witch just, why isn't there higher than five stars!
Just got to lay here processing all the feelings while I wait for Bad Fae. ❤

Series is improving quickly.

After enjoying the first book, I read this immediately after. As the story is well paced and the plot twists a lot, I finished it in one go. The story is different from the first which means it could be read as a standalone. Occasionally,  although you get a series, the same story is repeated each time. So far so good. That said, the fight scenes got a bit repetitive.
Like the previous book, the relationahip between Cat and Sawyer is still enjoyable. The author is writing it so it doesn't go too fast and although there is some angst, it doesn't detract from what is a complicated but warm, realistically frustrating (probably more on Sawyers side) partnership in both the professional and personal sides. I suspect as more about her parents is known, their relationship will change even more. I'm wondering if she might even have some supe blood or witch's in her family somewhere. I also wonder if her therapist will have more of an input/expanded role along the line as she seems, even for her job, far to easy in understanding everything.
The new character of Kailon seems intriguing and it's clear from the title of book 3 that he will appear. I hope Mrs Brown might come in to it more as her involvement seems to be key to Cats past.
As with book 1, it just misses out on 5*. This is because it still has an goodie but a bit baddie as a sort of insider which can get old fast. Also, although they are meant to be a small department, I think there should be a couple of new characters, or at least more of Brax. In addition, the old male cop hating a new female is old hat too.
And now for book 3...😀

Overall: 4/5

Plot and themes: 4/5

Characters: 3/5

Writing style: 3/5

Attention-grabbing: 4/5

Bad Witch is the second novel in the Cat McKenzie series, a paranormal detective book. Cat has come to terms with the fact that all supernaturals are not evil, even accepted that some of them are genuinely good people. That doesn't change the fact that she's more confused than ever about her parents' deaths and answers are in short supply. But witches are being murdered and she has a job to do, a job that once again threatens her personal safety and keeps her from said answers.

I enjoyed this one more than the last because I felt like the main plot was actually driving stuff forward. There were witches being murdered and they were able to solve the mystery. I appreciated that it wasn't super predictable but it wasn't incredibly convoluted or hard to follow. The romance also heated up a lot and we definitely saw some serious development on that front. I do kind of resent the fact that the timeline is so short, I thought we were dealing with a lot more than two weeks. Like, you're telling me she dropped all her prejudices and started catching major serious feels for this dude in that short of a timeline? Kind of hard to imagine and I'm more of a fan of a slower burn.

Still genuinely good though, exciting and building up to a bigger reveal on her identity and how that's going to factor in with her new romance. I'm looking forward to seeing more of these characters and their great teamwork.

Loving this series!

This is book two in this series and I’m loving all the snark and sass. The stories are clever and it’s an interesting world being built.

In this book Cat, a human assigned to the Paranormal Investigation Group (yup, PIG) and her partner Sawyer, an incubus, are looking for a serial killer witch. The paranormals are all new to Cat so she’s getting on the job training every time she comes across something new. In this way, the author does a great job of world building for the reader.

The story is suspenseful and cleverly builds for the next book. There’s a steamy sex scene as the kinda sorta romance between Cat and Sawyer builds and there is A LOT of UST. Lots of will they or won’t they hangs over the story arc. We learn more about Cat’s background and a few tidbits about Sawyer. I’m still not clear on why the Fae Kailon isn’t in prison given his role in The Reveal. No explanation given.

I’ll be diving right into book three as this series is definitely a binge read.

Second book in the series and another enjoyable read. I find the plot interesting, the idea of a task force to investigate supernatural crimes is interesting. There's lots of nice hints at mysterious back story things yet to come and the main characters are interesting and engaging.

The only thing not doing it for me is the love story. Ugh. So much focus on the sexual pining that it really takes away from the interesting storyline. Main character Cat, about to get killed... fuck he looks sexy with his hair across his forehead. Like seriously!? They try to keep things professional, then he ends up in her bed, desperate for sex, but oh you don't have to do anything Cat... then why the hell did you climb into her bed. Go out and find some sex. Then he wants to have a relationship with her, and she says no even though she clearly wants it, great, so we can put up with their pining throughout the next novel!?

Sigh, I did enjoy the overall book but found the 'romance' a bit annoying. Not sure if I'll bother reading the next one. Possibly.

Cat is getting sort of used to her new role in the PIG. She is realizing that not all supernaturals are bad, some like Sawyer are pretty good although fighting the attraction between them is getting difficult. She is also trying to figure out her parents after finding out that a vampire killed them as they were part of a supernatural hunting group.
When the witch who lives in her building is killed, along with the basic destruction of her building, things get interesting. From finding out from the Fae who exposed the supernatural world to humans that the witch’s murder was not a single incident, Cat and Sawyer start investigating.
This book has some action, mystery, surprises, humour and sex.
There is definite growth in Cat’s attitudes, her understanding of the supernatural world although it leaves more questions about her background. The relationship with Sawyer is complex, with the fact that he supposedly cannot stay with a single person.
It is a fairly easy, entertaining read but it is not a fade to black book.
I am definitely enjoying these books.

Cat is visited by Sawyer's vampire informant who brings her a very surprising gift. Later she and Sawyer pursue a witch who is murdering other witches and stealing their powers, subsequently increasing her own. Kailon, the fae who revealed supernaturals to humans, is also hunting this witch since one of the deceased was his niece. Another victim is the witch who lives in Cat’s apartment complex. Cat is forced to move in with Sawyer after her building is destroyed during the attempt to capture the perpetrator.

Cat’s life does not get less hazardous as she suffers additional injuries. The evil witch sends creatures from Wonderland to annihilate her. This witch also wants Cat’s necklace.

Cat and Sawyer are still attracted to one another and have a close call.

Smith, the human officer who has a grudge against Cat, pops up from time to time. I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t play an important role sometime in the future.

Kailon rescinds a promise he’d made to Cat which puts her in even greater danger.

And the beat goes on...

Definitely Good Series !! . . .

I think the whole tone of this series is why I enjoy most. Cat McKenzie, our rookie cop, is a funny, sassy character who stands up for herself. Her first partner was killed before she even got the hang of things. She is now part of a team of supernatural detectives, with her new partner Sawyer and they seem to be good together.

Their latest mystery is filled with a good mix of characters as they deal with a power hungry witch on a killing spree to steal other witches’ magic.

I really enjoy that this series is so filled with humor. The relationship among the characters is also fun to watch. Cat is getting to meet all sorts of supernatural characters as we see Fae, witches, vampires, and other such things. The story line is good with enough twists to keep the reader’s attention and makes me want more. Grab your copy and enjoy! This is a fun series to read and I definitely want to stick with it.

Good

Our snarky heroine, Cat, is back. Continuing on right after the end of the last book (it does need to be read first), Cat is getting used to her role in the supernatural world.
When she, and her incubus partner Sawyer, get called out to investigate a murder, she finds herself facing a rather unique foe.

Cat is a character that grows on you, once you realize that the snark is just that, and not her really whining. She fits in surprisingly well with her supernatural colleagues, and holds her own in unusual circumstances.
Her past is rather a mystery, and we don’t learn very much about it here, though we do learn some rather intriguing facts about Cat herself.
This is an enjoyable series, with a fascinating set of characters, and an interesting world that I will definitely be reading more of!

Recommended for those who enjoy urban fantasy.

Moving slowly with seen and unseen injuries from the baby vampire maker case battles, Cat’s surprised there’s a vamp at her door when she comes home. As he extends an offer, they’re interrupted by the foundation of Cat’s apartment building rocking! Cat sees her witch neighbor being killed by a rogue witch at the explosion point and a fae attempting to kill the killer.

Partner Sawyer arrives steps ahead of the PD making Cat quickly sort her personal/emotional debris including a shift in her loyalties. The rogue escapes as the men face off leading to Cat flirting with the fae, a temporary change for Cat and Sawyer, a battle with the rogue that definitely puts Cat down but not out before it’s all over as the rogue works a list of targets.

I love this series, but that ending! Too much angst to leave me hanging, and the next book isn’t in kindle unlimited and now I have to carry the paperback around with me. (Just found the bundle in there actually, score!)
The romance is slow burn, but not a huge focus of the story. I am rooting so hard for those two to find a loophole and let this work out.
Most of this story though is Cat trying to save people, and being a smart alec in the process. She is the sort of MC I always love, selfless and not amazing but trying really hard to fight for the little guys. She’s a little bit Stephanie Plum with the amount of damage she generates, but she’s actually competent. It has just the right balance of action, humour, and want, and I loved it.

Great character growth

The first book gave me a bit of pause as I didn’t love that the MC was a bit immature, irresponsible and rude. I appreciate that that character has seemingly developed, and I appreciate the open honesty between Cat and Sawyer. Lots of great sexual tension and relational interplay there and I hope to see that develop without aspects of betrayal, cheating, defensive hurting, etc - acknowledging the general challenge presented by Sawyer being a succubus. Enjoy to mystery, action, and more of their histories and selves being learned throughout and hoping for more of that!

What a fantastic second book in this series. Cat is such an amazing FMC and I absolutely loved the growth we got in this second installment. I love a good mystery, adding in the supernatural fantasy and it's such a beautiful read. There's lots to love, lots to imagine. This story picks up after the events of book one and it was full steam ahead from there. I really enjoyed the plot, who doesn't love witches and cops? The dialogue was great and the characters were unforgettable. Can't wait to see what Lauren dawes comes up with next!

Bsd Witch : Murderous witch out of revenge

I love the snark and sass that comes from Cat in the series. When she gets scared or upset her sarcasm really comes out to play. She is constantly inundated with supernaturals trying to hurt or kill her. Yet she always manages to save herself. Sometimes with a little help of her partner Sawyer. In this book a bad witch is on a killing rampage trying to avenge her family. There is an assassin fae that is going after the same person. Lots of action and adventure, sarcasm, steam and a little bit of sweet.

In this second book, I am starting to like/"get" Cat. She kind of grows on you. As she (and the readers) learn more about the increasing number of supernaturals popping up, she realizes there are good and bad supers just like good and bad humans. Story is getting better, but what is up with Sawyer? He's the supernatural, but it seems he is the conduit-just introducing her to supers or being her handbook. He doesn't seem to be around when she needs most of the help...but that sword? That is one handy weapon!

So witches are turning up horrifically murdered witht heir power stolen. Obviously Cat finds herself right in the middle of things. So we have an escalation of the sexual tension between Sawyer and Cat, ancient rivalries, interference from the fae and some very questionable police work. By that I mean that Cat is still not very good at her job but she's just lucky enough that she seems to be a target of a lot of supernatural creatures.

I wish there was more information in certain storylines and characters...but that's really my only complaint. This series is really fun so far.

Really good continuation of Cat's story. I sometimes do feel there's a level of immaturity with her. I also am unsure of her age as the story progresses. With her partnership, I am hoping that the author takes into account the ending of book 2. It would be a huge game changer if things could stay as is and perhaps come to fruition much later. Overall very good story and looking forward to the next installment

I didn't expect much from the first book in the series, but I did expect some character development in this one. So far, all we have is Cat getting used to the idea that she likes working with supes.
I am so uninterested in the romance side of this, it's unbelievable. There is absolutely no chemistry between the main characters and the guy is absolutely boring. I'll read one more but from the reviews it doesn't seem to be getting any better.

Much Better

This story was so much richer than the first. Cat, while still a bit snarky, toned it down a lot. She’s grown so much. Broke my heart at the end to watch Sawyer leave. I wanted to choke her like Keylon. Lol. The author really upped her game in terms of character development. The storyline was interesting. Looking forward to the next.
