During his life, George S. Patton Jr. starred as an Olympic athlete in the 1912 Stockholm games, chased down Mexican bandits, and led tanks into battle in World War I. But he is best remembered for his exploits on the field of battle in World War II. Patton’s War, the first of three volumes, follows the general from the beaches of Morocco to the fields of France, right before the birth of Third Army on the continent. In highly engaging fashion, Kevin Hymel uncovers new facts and challenges long-held beliefs about the mercurial Patton, not only examining his relationships with his superiors and fellow generals and colonels, but also with the soldiers of all ranks whom he led. Through extensive research of soldiers’ memoirs and interviews, Hymel adds a new dimension to the telling of Patton’s WWII story.

Patton’s War: An American General’s Combat Leadership, Volume I: November 1942–July 1944 offers a detailed exploration of General George S. Patton Jr.’s early World War II campaigns, tracing his development from North Africa to the prelude of Third Army operations in France.
The book provides a broad operational overview while also engaging with Patton’s relationships with fellow commanders and the soldiers under his leadership. This dual focus helps situate his tactical decisions within both strategic and human contexts.
A key strength of the work lies in its use of extensive primary and testimonial sources, including soldiers’ memoirs and interviews, which contribute to a more nuanced and grounded interpretation of Patton’s leadership style and battlefield reputation.
Overall, this volume serves as a strong foundation for the series and will appeal to readers interested in World War II history, military leadership, and the evolving historiography of General George S. Patton.

Hymel's account of General Patton's journey through the first half of WW2 is fascinating and well researched. Hymel's does a good job balancing the details of the general's personal life with what was happening during theater operations. It never feels too bogged down with details. Through much has been written about General Patton, Hymel helps us gain a more comprehensive understanding of Patton's decisions and attitudes during all significant events up to the activation of 3rd Army in Europe. Looking forward to the volume 2.
