From the time she was born, Sigrid has only ever been ordinary. Being paired at birth with a plain horse―instead of the powerful winged mare of a valkyrie―meant there would be no warrior path for her. No riding the skies, no glory among the nine worlds. Just the simple, unremarkable life of a stable hand.
Everything changes when a terrible enemy ambushes Vanaheim and Sigrid sees a vision of herself atop a mythical stallion, leading the valkyries into a harrowing battle. Finally, she can grab her future with her own two hands and become the hero of her own story…if she dares.
But her destiny is tied up with Mariam, a fallen valkyrie who’s allied herself with the very enemy Sigrid is trying to stop.
Now Sigrid has left ordinary behind as she begins a journey with the beautiful―if treacherous―valkyrie, each step bringing her closer to answers…and to awakened feelings for Mariam.
Only, the life Sigrid has escaped may have been paradise compared to the one she’s racing toward. Because her destination is the realm of the dead: the gates of Hel.

I was saving The Valkyrie’s Daughter to be one of my last five reads of the year simply because of the stunning cover. ( since this review the book title and front cover have been changed). Behind the cover is exactly what I was expecting, a sensational YA adventure wrapped in Norse mythology and then some. Warner bent the myths beautifully to support her narrative of two young outcasts, one trying to redeem herself and the other following her destiny. The epic adventure story is told in a scintillating fashion sure to hold you spell bound. The Valkyrie’s Daughter offers readers who are questioning their identity a positive place to explore and visualize their future. This is a queer utopia for burgeoning LGBTQ young readers. Sigrid is a lowly stable hand who always wanted to be a Valkyrie riding her winged horse to protect her kingdom. Mariam is an enemy valkyrie tasked to stealing a Seer’s stone and bringing Sigrid to Helheim. The Valkyrie’s Daughter is everything I would want if I was a YA reader and as an adult reader it is pure entertainment.

Who doesn’t love an underdog story? Maybe I’m biased as I am in Norway now visiting musea and well known places with Viking relics and Norse mythology, but this was the perfect book for me to read (even with the limited time I have to read). I have to mention, this book is inspired by Norse mythology and liberties are clearly taken, but I liked the fictional world that is created by Warner.
Sigrid is a stable hand who wants to be (and feels she is destined to be) a valkyrie. I liked how Sigrid’s character grows throughout the book. At the start I got a bit of a mean girls feeling, as the Valkyrie juniors (and various others) were mean to Sigrid without any good reason, but this high school vibe changed soon and my favorite part was when the real adventure of traveling into different worlds started.
There is a small sapphic enemies to lovers YA romance between Sigrid and Mariam. It’s sweet and very PG and I look forward to see how it develops further in the following book(s) because it’s very slow burn and this was only the beginning. At the start of the book the romance was a little bit too much tell and too little show for me, but it improved during the story. Mariam is a fierce character and as this book is written in third person with one POV I found myself wishing for Mariam’s POV as well. Also Fisk’s POV (a side character) would have been interesting to read. If there is only 1 POV I prefer first person, in this case I would have really liked multiple POVs.
Another character that should be mentioned is Hestur, Sigrid’s horse. He’s great and they have an awesome bond. This is definitely a book for horse lovers.
In short, if you like strong women, horses, Norse mythology, and a sweet sapphic romance you’ll likely enjoy this action packed YA book. Recommended.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This story is a marriage of everything I love: warrior women, Norse mythology, horses, and a sapphic enemies-to-lovers romance. Enjoy the journey into the nine worlds!

3 EXCITING STARS
“I’ve never had any of that – a family, a path, a future. I’ll always be below the other girls my age. It’s not enough.” (This quote may not be in the published version of this novel, it was copied from the advanced reader’s copy.)
This was a quick and entertaining read! I enjoyed the fast-paced and exciting storyline, and found the writing very easy to follow, plus the Norse mythology and iconic valkyries were really fascinating – who doesn’t love female warriors on flying horses.
However, I couldn’t help but be… incredibly irritated by the protagonist. She just could not be satisfied, and she was so easily manipulated, and so ridiculously selfish… I was not her #1 fan. Though she did have some development and growth, I still found myself holding a grudge against her by the end of the book, which was disappointing. I also just wasn’t all that entranced by the romance – yay for sapphic valkyries, but there seemed to be little build-up or chemistry in their relationship, which made me really sad. Plus our love interest seemed to have minimal personality?
This was a really quick and easy read, and quite entertaining and interesting, but I couldn’t help but be disappointed by the characters. Nonetheless, Tiana Warner definitely has potential, and I might try some of her other books in the future! Thank you to the author and publisher for the free copy provided in exchange for an honest review :).
I might be biased, seeing as how I am Scandinavian and a fan of Norse mythology. If you're not that into the mythology, this might work better for you. But please don't make the mistake of thinking that this is about Norse mythology. It's just inspired by it.
👍 What I Liked 👍
Sigrid: I had great sympathy for our main hero, Sigrid. I felt her pain and her desires very acutely. I was rooting for her to have her happily ever after.
👎 What I Disliked 👎
Writing: For me, the writing was a sore spot. It felt choppy and fragmented. It lacked a natural flow.
Dialogue: Another issue for me was the dialogue. It felt stilted and didn't reflect the setting of the novel. That might, of course, be creative choice by the author. But it was a choice that did not work for me. It made it very hard to buy into the concept of Norse warriors in a foreign, magical land.
Mythology: Like I said in the beginning, I feel like it is wrong to sell this as a novel about Norse Mythology. Because there were so many things that were unsupported by scholarship. It would be more accurate to say that it was inspired by Norse Mythology.

~ 2.5 ~ This book was difficult to rate. I enjoyed some aspects quite a bit, but as the novel progressed I had to force myself to finish it.
What I liked:
• Normalized sapphic relationships in YA fantasy (always a plus) • Hester (best boy, deserves 5 stars on his own🐴) • The way the author took Norse mythology and mixed in her own ideas - it made her plot and world believable while still feeling respectful of the source material, at least to my knowledge. • The descriptions of horse care and horse riding - you can tell the author has real life experience with both and wrote these parts of the novel with skill and passion. It was very enjoyable to read and made me miss horse riding a lot. • The budding relationship between the two MCs. The two still have a long way to go and lots of growing to do together, but I think that’s definitely the way the author intended it to be. I do wish their characters were more developed though.
What I didn’t like as much:
• Sigrid’s choices. Some of them made sense - she’s flawed, as all the best main characters are, and she’s 16. But some of her major choices (keeping it vague to avoid spoilers) felt so incredibly selfish and out of left field I was tempted to throw the book across the room. • The “mean girl-ification” of the Valkyries. It came across as very cliché and shallow, which made them all feel like the same person. (Slight spoiler: they do change their attitude towards Sigrid but never offer decent explanations or apologies for their past harassment. I’m hoping it’s explored more or at least explained in the next book.) • The writing (at times). Some phrases and descriptions became very repetitive after a while, and the dialogue often felt disjointed. The conversations seemed more forced than natural, and it took me out of the story a couple of times.
Overall, I did enjoy parts of this book despite my critiques, but I probably won’t be continuing the series.
This was such a fun Norse book! And it was super queer normative aside from still being heavily based in the binary. Also the MC is a horse gay.
The Helheim Princess tells us about the story of Sigrid, an oprhan in Vanaheim. Sigrid has always wanted to join the Valkyries, but since she bonded with a normal horse instead of a winged one when she was born, she's been left to the sidelines of being a stable hand. For the most part Sigrid doesn't mind, she loves the horses and caring for them. But she wants more. She and Hestur (her horse) have been training in secret and she knows if she's given the chance, she can prove that she'd be a worthy Valkyrie.
During an attack on Vanahalla, Sigrid finds out what the opposing army wants and she goes to stop them from stealing an ancient relic. Sigrid ends up holding the Eye and sees a vision of herself riding Sleipnir, Odin's eight-legged horse. The vision gives Sigrid hope that she could join the Valkyries. Sigrid takes the captured Valkyrie, Mariam, and together to two set out to find Helheim and Sleipnir so Sigrid can figure out her destiny.
I really liked Sigrid as a character. She was so fierce from the get go, but getting to see her go from someone super impulsive/trusting to becoming a leader and learning how to be part of team was awesome. I loved seeing how while this Norse society did have gender roles, no one was told no because of their gender. The world also was very queer normative for MLM and WLW couples as well as trans binary people.
Sigrid is most likely a lesbian, but I hesitate to label her that way. She does discuss that while she's never really had feelings for people, she's definitely found women attractive. So I feel like she could definitely be aspec and lesbian, but nothing is confirmed.
I loved the action and exploration of Norse society/mythology of this book. I loved getting to see what the Valkyries are about, and I'm super curious about what they'll do next. I really liked the development of Sigrid and Mariam's relationship over the course of the book. In the beginning I didn't feel a lot of chemistry between the two of them, but it was a big slow burn with a lot of "will they/won't they" vibes. One thing I really appreciated is while they do admit to being attracted to each other, they don't jump to "I'm in love with you".
Overall, this was a fun YA action-adventure Norse mythology.
Rep: Sapphic female MC, sapphic love interest, trans female side character, two BIPOC side characters.
I have loved what I have read from Tiana Warner, so when I saw The Helheim Princess, I had to have it. I love myths and legends and reading books that stretch my imagination.
‘Sigrid urged Hestur to a gallop….’ and their mad dash to Vanaheim and back had me cracking up. I’ll leave it to you to find out why, but with a start like that, I feel good about the rest of the story.
Sigrid has no memory of her family and she is bullied by the Valkyries. She wants so much to be one of them, but so many things work against her. Valkyries have magical horses and Hestur is not magical, or white and gorgeous. He is brown, ordinary looking, but as fast as the wind. She trains in secret…and it will come in handy.
Dire wolves. Night elves. Helheim…the land of the dead.
On Sigrid’s quest for her destiny, she will be used and betrayed, but she will also find the most loyal friends and her place in the world.
Tiana Warner’s creative world building had me lost in the fantasy. It’s not the destination, it’s the journey, and I thoroughly enjoyed traveling with Sigrid and her friends. The characters are fleshed out, growing and changing.
I couldn’t put it down long enough to take many notes. I was captivated with the vividly created world, fabulous characters and an adventure filled with surprise and danger. I love when I don’t always know where I am going, but enjoy the time it takes to get there.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of The Helheim Princess by Tiana Warner.
I thought that this was really good! I thought that the book sounded interesting and I was right. I was pulled into this story right away and was always eager to get back to the story. The characters were very likable, the story was entertaining, and the mythology added a lot. I am so glad that I decided to give this one a try.
Sigrid is a stable hand in Vanaheim. She lives in the stable with her horse, Hestur. What she really wants is to be a valkyrie but she has a regular horse instead of the winged mare of the valkyries. It turns out that she may not be quite as ordinary as she thought. When Vanaheim is attacked by an outside group, Sigrid jumps into action and sees her destiny. She will end up on the adventure of her life with friends she didn’t know she had.
I thought that this book was very exciting. There was plenty of action worked into the story which kept me glued to the pages. I really liked the mythology that was worked into this story and loved seeing Sigrid and her friends facing some impossible situations. I liked Sigrid, Mariam, and Fisk and really liked seeing their relationships grow and change over the course of the story. The horses were fully developed characters and I liked what they added to the story.
I would recommend this book. I really enjoyed reading this book and couldn’t wait to see how things would work out. I am looking forward to reading more of this series just as soon as I can.
I received a review copy of this book from Entangled Teen via NetGalley.
Initial Thoughts I enjoyed this one! I was hooked by this story pretty early on and was eager to see how Sigrid and the rest of the crew would reach their destiny. I loved how much of the story focused on the various horses and how distinct each of those characters was. There was plenty of excitement and more than a few surprises to keep this one very interesting.
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Valkyrie's Daughter was a very interesting book. At first, I was confused though. Mostly because my kindle kept showing a different title than what goodreads was. Eventually the lightbulb went off in my mind and I quickly realized that the title changed. Way, way, after I downloaded it to my kindle.
Originally under The Helheim Princess, you are still following the adventure of Sigrid. She is an orphan and had dreams of becoming a Valkyrie. Hence the title change. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned and dreams are crushed. Quite violently. Okay, just kidding! She actually ends up bonding with a normal horse instead of a winged one. So, yeah, her dreams were crushed still.
Luckily, for all of us, she doesn't take that for an answer and trains in private. Of course, once things are starting to get better for her there's an attack. While figuring out that a certain ancient relic is about to be stolen, so goes off and takes it for herself. Which ends up showing her a vision that ends up reigniting her hopes and dreams.
Besides Sigrid, we meet Mariam. Now she is a Valkyrie who unfortunately ends up being captured. After freeing her, they start their own adventure. I honestly really enjoyed getting to know these two. Obviously, I had a favorite of the two because Sigrid was just so easy to like. She fascinated me and I just wanted to see her dreams come true.
The adventure, and slow burn of a romance, definitely kept the pages turning. It was honestly so easy to devour this in one sitting and I'm freaking happy that I got the chance to jump into this beautiful book. Not so secretly, I am beyond excited for the next book to come out and hope to get the chance to read it as soon as possible.
The fourth book I've read by this author, and the first that wasn't part of a mermaid series. Still a young adult book, though. And fantasy.
Sigrid is a 16 year old stable girl in a barn on Vanaheim, one of the 9 or whatever Norse Mythology worlds. Her life consists of being that while training with her horse, trying to show she deserves to be a Valkyrie. That's the world she lives on, by the way, the world the Valkyrie's live on. Training and stuff.
Vanaheim is invaded by dire wolves, and evil Valkyrie's and night elves. An item of importance is stolen. The Valkyrie's must go on a quest! Naturally Sigrid needs to go along, needs to be part of the quest. So naturally . . . she's told she can't go along. So she chases after them, with [spoiler] and naturally [spoiler].
Right, can't explore the world further without revealing bunch of spoilers.
Story involves a quest, a budding friendship/romance, flying horses, "normal" horses, 8 legged horses, horses that were born from Loki's womb, etc. etc.
Story was . . . okay-ish. Enough there but I kept finding that I needed to push to keep reading. Characters drifted in and out of being likeable. Sigrid was incredibly naive and ... something, Then I remembered she was 16 and, well, right. A 16 year old who was taught to be a stable girl, but didn't receive any kind of book learning or the like. So, sure.
Sigrid is a stable had with a wish to become a mighty Valkyrie. Unfortunately her horse doesn’t have wings which means her dreams seem unlikely. When she sees a vision of something more than what she is, a spark of hope is lit.
A fun journey with a girl/girl love interest.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love norse mythology and this was an amazing foray into one of the best female myths out there. The setting was so real and imaginative and these characters were so complex and fun to read about!
4.5 STARS | THE VALKYRIE’S DAUGHTER is a ADVENTUROUS and EPIC YA LGBTQ+ FANTASY that is coming to your store soon later this July! I would like to thank ENTANGLED TEEN and TIANA WARNER for giving me an a advance copy in the mail, before it’s release, July 26, 2022! I am absolutely amazed by Warner’s writing and her imagination. Sigrid is an ordinary girl, working as a stable herder. What she wants more is to be a valkyrie, riding the skies among the nine worlds. But everything at once changes when a terrible enemy ambushes Vanaheim, leading the valkyrie into a harrowing battle. Finally, she grabs her future with her own two hands and become the hero for once…if she dares. But her destiny is tied up with Mariam, a fallen valkyrie who’s allied herself, and becomes enemies with Sigrid. Now Sigrid has left ordinary behind and embarks on a journey with Mariam, hoping to maybe bond a friendship. Only, the life Sigrid has escaped may have been paradise compared to the one she’s racing toward. Because her destination is the gates of Hel where the dead is. Reader will love this enemies to lovers lesbian trope, which has vibes of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and Marvel’s THOR! A wonderful book that’s coming soon!
Thanks to the publisher for providing an eARC of The Helheim Princess in exchange for an honest review.
Is the narration and character voice in this one jarringly modern? Yes. Does it take away from immersion some times? Absolutely. But until someone else writes me a queer enemies to lovers Valkyrie book book everyone's going to have to hear me rave about this one.
Okay just hear me out sapphic valkyries in a novel with Percy Jackson feels? ITS A HELL YES FROM ME.
One of my favourite reads in years.
Floored. Passed out. Screaming. Iconic.
So first of all let’s start with the fact this is enemies to lovers. Then we sprinkle in Pegasus, Valkyries, and a whole load of mythology that this book is so perfectly steeped in.
I will now read anything Tiana Warner writes, because holy crap can this author write. (Literally, it will grip you by the throat.)
It’s such an absolutely immersive joy to read, and this is one of those books I’ll slap in the hands of adults who ‘don’t read ya’ because ah-mazing. Like yes, please let Warner change your mind. The world building is just as gorgeous and in depth of those of tales like The Witcher and The Hobbit.
I wish I’d also had this as a teen, I’m now 26 but to have had something like this back then would have been world altering. The representation (and the complete lack of homophobia) is so pure and wholesome and it’s everything teens (and even us adults healing that inner child) need.
Rep// Sigrid, 16, I believe she’s lesbian due to comments but not 100% sure. Mariam is queer also. The romance featured is slow-burn WLW and is incredibly cute.
Gripped from page 3. I knew from the first chapter that it would be epic and I loved for it. Action packed, with the perfect amount of twists and turns throughout. I only put this down because I had to work. It made me glad to wake up at 4am on a Sunday so I could devour it.
I’m also remaining hopeful… because it was left open to possibility at the end that maybe… just maybe we may get more than one book? please?
My only downside was the pacing towards the end felt slightly rushed. That was quite genuinely my only complaint, and that was grasping at straws.
Thank you to entangled teen for sending me a copy,
Tws listed below, please skip if you don’t want vague spoilers.
Tw//CW// animal death, parental abandonment, bullying themes, fire and burning, mild violence, hostage situation.
4.25 rounded down to 4. A fun journey through Norse Mythology with just a pinch of romance. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Sigrid wants more than anything to be a Valkyrie, using those abilities to protect her realm from night elves and forces seeking to invade; however Sigrid was not born with a flying mare at her side. She has a mortals horse, leading to the Valkyries in training treating her as less than...even though she tends to their mares even better than they do. Upon seeing a vision of her riding Odin's famed 8 legged horse, Sigrid strikes out with a banished enemy Valkyrie to find her fate. The journey will be treacherous and that's even before they reach their destination: Helheim.
Sigrid was a great character to go on this adventure with. She made mistakes....numerous ones, but she learned from them and made herself better for them. She didn't run from them or hide them, openly admitting her faults and preventing any awkward reveals she would have to make later. The same however can't be said for her companion, Mariam. That doesn't mean Mariam is a bad character or is unredeemable, it just makes it harder for me to relate with her. The banter between characters throughout the story I fantastic, and the woven stories stitched into the fabric of Sigrid and Miriam makes a beautiful tapestry to take in.
While the story took some obvious turns, I'm glad I was allowed in Sigrid's world. The ending was open(ish) to where a second novel could be possible, and I would welcome it home with open arms. 4.25 stars rounded down to 4. Recommended for readers ages 12+ as well as for those who love Norse mythology.
This was SO much fun from start to finish. If you've read the Magnus Chase series by Rick Riordan, which I would say is upper middlegrade, and want to delve into YA, I think this would be a great choice. It explores Norse mythology in such a fun and accessible way, with a fast-paced plot including some twists and turns, and a lot of character development. That was also the book's biggest strength for me: I often feel like plotdriven books lack in character development, but here we have a loveable, interesting main character who's realistically flawed and goes through a lot of development. It also has a very lovely enemies-to-lovers sapphic romance, which I couldn't help but root for - they're adorable!
I absolutely loved this underdog story that is set in Norse mythology. Sigrid longs to be a Valkyrie but as she lacks a winged horse it's never going to happen . However when she gets involved in trying to stop the theft of a mystical object she has a vision that shows her anything is possible ! I'm not going to be long winded but will say this story of a young girl finding her place in the world was fun to read and had action, emotion and of course delightful horses. I was a tad nonplussed that the Valkyries don't seem to kill their enemies and only wound but its aimed at teenagers so perhaps that explains it. A good story and just the beginning of Sigrids adventures. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Buckle up and get ready to charge into a adventurous Sapphic valkyries and Norse Mythology novel filled with descriptive landscapes, enchanting fantasy elements and fierce badass Valkyries.
This book is perfect for you if you enjoy any of the following: 📍Norse Mythology 📍Valkyries 📍Queer MC 📍Underdog story 📍Enemies-to-lovers 📍Animal companions 📍Slow burn romance
We follow Sigrid, an orphan and stable hand who with everything in her wants to become a great Valkyrie. Without a horse her dream seems less likely every day, until one day the Eye reveals to her a vision of who she is to become, hope is sparked and she sets out to fulfill everything she was shown. With a threatening attack on Vanaheim that results in Sigrid killing a mere of an enemy valkyrie. This enemy, Mirriam is tasked to bring Sigrid to Helheim after the incident and Sigrid accompanies her while setting out to fulfill the vision she was given.
The story gave me a lot of Percy Jackson elements which I loved, I also enjoyed the immense growth Sigrid went through as a character. Mirriam was an absolute compassionate sweetheart, and I love the contrast between her and Sigrid and yet how well they fit together. I am also a sucker for a slow burn so this was right up my alley. It was jam packed with beautiful descriptive scenery and adventures and I can honestly say there wasn’t a moment I was bored. I think my favorite part of the book was Sigrid’s relationship with her horse Hestur and the beautiful bond they shared.
Overall it was a good book, I think I might have enjoyed it more if it wasn’t YA, but as an adult reader I still found it enjoyable enough.
Thank you NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for this ARC.
This was a decent read, but the main character was incredibly frustrating. She was the definition of a headstrong teenager, and at times, I just wanted to shake her.
The story was interesting, and the adventure had a few different elements. It was really strong 15 to 60% of the way in, when our main getsher heroic confidence. However, when that confidence leads to flawed decision making, it does get frustrating.
The story itself was a bit simple. Bad guys are bad, and good guys are good. It was weird reading a YA where it was that was that, and there were no other perspectives or twists. I think it kept the drama in the last 25% of the book manageable this way. It was just odd.
There is a romance, but it's second to the main adventure, even though the love interest is introduced in a way that implies the romance will be a bigger part. This is a book in a series, and there is an obligatory reason for the lead and her love interest to separate.
It was interesting enough I am happy to continue with the series and see where it goes. You might enjoy it if you are interested in Norse gods and lore or if you like the familiarity of a YA fantasy with a headstrong lead that doesn't seem to backtrack, she is just 16 and stubborn.
Get ready for an amazing adventure of Sapphic Valkyries and Norse mythology!.
This has strong layers of storytelling and weaves an interesting tapestry of Norse mythology, combined with fantasy and adventure elements. Whilst the pacing is slow at the start, it soon picks up into a whirlwind fantasy ride of realms, creatures, and kick-ass Valkyries. It was great to finally read a Norse-based story centred on the Valkyries, making it stand-out and fresh.
The MC Sigrid goes through phenomenal growth and transition. She is one bold MC but is also balanced with a tender side. I loved the relationship between the Sigrid and her horse Hestur. It is such a pure and beautiful bond that people and animals share together. Her relationship with Mariam is a natural slow-burn.
A fun mythological romp!
Thankyou to Netgalley and Entangled Publishing, LLC for this eARC in exchange for an honest review!
Thank you Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for providing me an e-arc in exchange for an honest review. My review is my own and not influenced by others.
When I saw this book is about Valkyries and winged horses I thought count me in! The writer has knowledge of horses which is very refreshing and nice to read about! Sigrid, the main character wishes to become a valkyrie, however her horse doesn’t have wings so the valkyries make sure she knows her place, which isn’t with them. Sigrid however decides not to let this stop her and make her own destiny by making sure she will become a valkyrie with her horse.
This book has Norse mythology, enemies to lovers and action. The beginning is slow, like really slow but further on the action takes place and takes the reader to another level in this story.
Norse Mythology is one I am not as familiar with, like Greek and Roman, but I am familiar enough to get by with retellings. When I saw the cover and title, it drew me to it and the blurb got me excited. I am interested in seeing what book 2 will bring.
Sigrid is a stable hand who wishes she could be more. Because of being different, she consistently gets picked on by the Valkyries in training. In her spare time, she trains herself and her trusty steed Hestur, the ways of the Valkyrie. She is determined to be heard, not realizing the consequences it could have. I am interested in seeing how Sigrid grows as a character in the next book.
Mariam is a secretive character, and those characters always catch my interest. I am one who does not have to know everything about the character in one, two, three books, or never. She acts more mature than her age because she had too. She opens up to Sigrid, discovering how Mariam became a fallen Valkyrie. I would love to learn more about her in the next book.
The world building in this story was well written. Norse mythology influence is sprinkled everywhere throughout the story. Mariam described the nine realms so one could understand. I do not know how much of it was the author or Norse mythology, as I am not as familiar with it. The romance in this story was okay. How I read it was more of a crush than anything else. Maybe this will go deeper in book 2.
I enjoyed this book. It was well paced and held my interest till the end. I would recommend this to anyone who likes slow romance, Norse mythology, Valkyries, and adventure.
*I received an ARC from NetGalley, and this is my honest opinion.
You can find this and other reviews on my website:
This book releases on the 26th, so make sure to grab yourself this great book if you are a fan of Norse mythology, enemies to lovers, slow burn, and sapphic romance! And horses! Because Hestur is the best boy.
I don’t know a whole lot about Norse mythology other than the MCU lol, so I really enjoyed this take on the Norse worlds and mythology in this book. This book opens with quite a bang, and it felt like a quick-paced read the entire time for me, one that I greatly enjoyed.
Sigrid, our MC, has always felt destined to be a powerful Valkyire, despite being denied that and forced to work as a stable hand. I loved her growth throughout this story, and I admired her bravery and courage to try and do the right things.
Miriam, our other MC who was introduced as the enemy, was a great character too, and a great match for Sigrid as the two have to work together. And I wish we’d gotten her POV at some point in this story. (Maybe we will in the next one?)
I can’t wait for the next book and now I definitely need to find more Norse-based books to read!
Tiana Warner has written a wonderful story, rich with engaging characters, wild adventure, and spice of sweet Sapphic romance. I enjoyed every minute of it! Contributing to the brilliance of the storytelling is the narration by Suzy Jackson. She brought the scenes and dialog to life, though I feel the writing is strong enough to do that all on its own.
The plot and world-building are inspired by Norse mythology and, of course, the female warriors called Valkyrie. The main character, Sigrid, starts out much maligned but has a steep growth arc through the tale, and every one of her ups and downs is well founded—the story logic works! Her attraction to Miriam, a junior Valkyrie, and the self-discovery it leads to is very much a coming of age for Sigrid, and offers a lovely and relatable journey even outside of the main goal/plot.
I will say that my expectations were high for this book, including the equestrian aspects and they were well met. Actually, my favourite relationship of all was between Sigrid and Hestur. (You’ll see what I mean!) It just makes your heart swell!
I love the Norse Mythology element. There was a big plottwist I didn't see coming, loved that. The romance was a bit cringy but it was also sapphic so that made it okay😂❤️
I did not like her take on Ratatosk. I love Ratatosk from Rick Ridordians "Magnus Chase" (a 3 book serie I strongly recomment if you liked this book)
